Surviving the End #1

Crumbling World

Rate this book
Family comes first—and he’ll do whatever it takes to protect his from the looming storm.

Even before becoming a husband and father, safety had been Shane McDonald’s priority for most of his forty-five years. As a nuclear engineer, it’s his responsibility to keep the Sequoyah Nuclear Plant functioning at optimum levels to avoid what protesters fear most—a meltdown.

But when a coronal mass ejection from the sun wipes out power across the globe, stopping a nuclear chain reaction is no longer his primary concern.

Now Shane must trek across hundreds of miles to ensure the safety of his loved ones in a world rapidly disintegrating into lawlessness. Yet with few functioning automobiles and a blind teenage daughter to protect, it’ll require careful planning to reach his prepper mother-in-law’s and reunite with his family.

His wife has her hands full as well. When her brother’s chemo drip suddenly stops working and her son gets stuck in the hospital elevator, all Jodi McDonald wants is the security of her husband’s steady presence. But with a weakened brother and inexperienced son to look after, Jodi must remain strong amid the chaos and help guide them to her mother’s.

However, even the best laid plans go awry as the miles stretch out between them. Supply thefts run rampant. Those who have necessities prey on those who don’t. Minds broken by hardship kill on sight.

But the fatal mistake comes when thugs threaten the McDonald’s little girl.

Shane must find the strength to do the unthinkable—or watch his family suffer the consequences.

This novel contains violence.

Grace Hamilton

Grace Hamilton is the prepper pen-name for a bad-ass, survivalist momma-bear of four kids, and wife to a wonderful husband. After being stuck in a mountain cabin for six days following a flash flood, she decided she never wanted to feel so powerless or have to send her kids to bed hungry again. Now she lives the prepper lifestyle and knows that if SHTF or TEOTWAWKI happens, she’ll be ready to help protect and provide for her family.

Combine this survivalist mentality with a vivid imagination (as well as a slightly unhealthy day dreaming habit) and you get a prepper fiction author. Grace spends her days thinking about the worst possible survival situations that a person could be thrown into, then throwing her characters into these nightmares while trying to figure out "What SHOULD you do in this situation?"

It’s her wish that through her characters, you will get to experience what life will be like and essentially learn from their mistakes and experiences.

Let me start by saying, I absolutely love this author.
The book has a great setup, and it is filled with action.
Some of the problematic situations with characters are unique, and things I have not seen before in postapocalyptic fiction.
I loved most of the characters, and I was invested in seeing all of them to safety.
That being said,
I am totally blind, and Violet made me cringe.
Under no circumstances am I implying she should be a super hero.
But her character was vapid, timid, more fearfull than her six-year-old sister, and riddled with stereotypical "blind" things.
Again, I do not mean to be harsh toward the author, because she is fantastic. I applaud the fact that she even wanted to include a blind character in this unique situation, but here are some of the things that could be better.
1. If reading Braille makes your arm tired, you're doing it wrong.
2. Shane's wish to shelter her is normal, but not so for how far he extended it. Sheltering your blind kid from knowledge about the world is a bad idea on so many levels.
3. sunglasses . . all the time - Some blind people wear them, but Violet did so because a kid made fun of her eyes. This would have been a great time to show some backbone, flip the bully off, and continue to show her face as normal. (Or at least have her parents tell her to do that.)
4. She never seemed to know what was going on. - I know that sighted people think vision is the key to everything, and I don't blame them for it. 40% of your brain's input is visual. But if you don't have vision, you use other senses, and learn to read a lot of things via context. You listen for the direction of sounds to figure out who is taking action. You don't need facial expressions when you have tone of voice. Sound, scent, smell, and most of all, your own intuition is key to giving you the vast majority of knowledge about the world that a sighted person would have. Finally, you listen for the words people say, but also the tone beneath the tone, if that makes sense. You know when someone is trying to keep from telling you something.
I am looking forward to continuing the series. It seems like Violet might be beginning to gain some strength and character, and I really hope I will see more of that for her.

Lots of action told from three different perspectives. There's Shane,Violet & guide dog Ruby heading from th Sequeoh Nuclear Plant to Macon. Then Jodi, Mike & Owen heading from Mike's final chemo treatment at the hospital to Macon. At Macon waiting for her family to arrive are Beth & Kaylee.
The world has literally gone mad and hostile very quickly forcing these characters to do things they would never have dreamt of doing before the coronal mass ejection event.

FULL REVIEW
As soon as I saw this one was coming soon, it was put straight onto my Want To Read Wishlist! Then when I got the book it was a struggle to continue with my current read as I kept looking at Crumbling World. I seriously wanted to start reading it straight away! I held off and finished what I was reading (though it was difficult and so tempting to read this one straight away!).

The book is told from three different groups of points of view. The book centres on one family and how the coronal mass ejection affects them and the world around them.

The first set of characters we meet are Shane, his daughter Violet who is blind and has a guide dog called Ruby. They are at the Nuclear Plant where Shane works and the reason Violet is with her dad is it is “take your child to work day.” They’ve just got settled in the control room with Shane’s colleague Landon who is in a wheelchair due to atrophied legs as he has spinabifida when the “event” happens. As Violet has had to leave her guide dog Ruby with security as the dog isn’t allowed in the control rooms she is immediately worried about her, but her father insists that they must prioritise getting the back up generator working first as if not the Nuclear Power Plant will overheat, and no one wants the consequences of that. When it comes to Shane, Violet & Ruby leaving they ask Landon to come with them as they know there will be plenty of room at Shane’s prepper mother-in-law’s home, but Landon asks them to take his car and bring him some supplies from his home. It turns out Landon is a bit of a prepper himself! During their trip for Landon’s supplies they are surprised how quickly everything seems to be falling apart. It seems that society isn’t far behind with people stealing, looting and attacking others for what they have. Sadly, the situation takes an even worse turn when guns become involved and trusting the wrong people can become a matter of life and death.

The next set of characters we also follow are Shane’s wife Jodi, her teenage son Owen and her brother Mike. They are at the hospital and Mike has just had his last chemotherapy treatment when the “event” happens. They are the ones that have the furthest to travel to what they deem safety at her mother’s home. This group ask Mike’s nurse, Erica if she wants to go with them but she declines saying she cannot leave her other patients. Which was a shame as again she would have been a great asset to the group of survivors, and there seemed to be a little chemistry between her and Mike. Though I guess there’s a chance we may see her again as Jodi did give her Beth’s address. On the advice of her mother Jodi asks for some medical supplies and Erica does help her sneak some medicines and bandages etc to take with them. It’s difficult traveling with Mike being nauseous due to the chemo treatment and as the days go on its clear the treatment is seriously taking his energy and stamina away. Luckily Jodi has some cash with her as suddenly that is all anyone will accept and prices have doubled or tripled. Owen seriously steps up to the mark helping his Uncle Mike. In fact, he has even more patience and is coping with the increasingly dangerous situation better than his mother. They too come across looting, and people wielding guns.

The final point of view and characters are Jodi’s mother Beth and Jodi & Shane’s youngest child, daughter Kaylee. They are at Beth’s home when the “event” happens which everyone considers as the ultimate place of safety. Beth goes to check on her elderly neighbour Mrs Eddie’s thinking she would perhaps be better off with her and Kaylee. Mrs Eddie is however reliant on an oxygen machine and even though its only a short while after the event, by the time Beth and Kaylee get across to her she is already dead. Beth calls the emergency services who explain they are having so many calls they are prioritising their calls so it could be a while until they get to collect the body.

Beth and Kaylee return to their house and start cooking food that would spoil. With Beth explaining why she is doing everything to little Kaylee, trying not to scare the youngster, yet at the same time prepare her for what may come. It comes as a bit of a shock when they end up prisoners in their home.

I had lots of favourite characters in this book, I particularly liked the inclusion of characters with disabilities and showing how they could cope, and be part of attempting to cure problems arising from the “event.” First up was Violet who insists on being part of the action and not being coddled because of her disability. Violet insists on knowing what is going on around them and has strong morals about helping people if she can. I also liked the character of Landon who was a great example of someone with a disability being able to do just as much as any other person. Landon is playing an important role keeping the Nuclear Plant from overheating. It made me, as a reader think about how people with disabilities could survive such an event, and I so wanted Landon to change his mind and go with Shane, Violet & Ruby, I believe he would have been a valuable asset and addition to their group both on the journey and in their future survival.

Other characters I really liked were Owen and how he stepped up, caring for both his Uncle Mike and his mother Jodi. Initially I was wary of Corbin, which I think was the intention of the author but it soon became apparent that he was going to become good friends with Violet and become an asset to their group of survivors.

I did like the older characters such as Mike, Jodi and Shane but I felt the younger characters of Owen, Violet and Corbin are the ones whose journey we will be concentrating on in the following books to come.

As soon as I started reading this book I was hooked. I quickly became attached to the characters and felt invested in them and was willing them to make the right decisions and survive everything that was being thrown at them. I have to admit when I start to read a book by Grace Hamilton, I have high expectations! I hated having to put this book down to eat, sleep etc and I ended up reading it in just two reading sessions and finishing it quite late at night/early morning! I can’t wait to read more! In fact, as I have the next book in the series, I am going to start that one next I need to find out how things are going for all those characters. Beth & Kaylee with the hidden prepper supplies, that could make them a target of looters and unscrupulous survivors. Shane, Violet & Ruby and Corbin, who eventually get to the end of their long eventful journey. Finally, Jodi, Mike and Owen who are still struggling to make their way to Beth’s home.

Waste of time

Brain dead characters can't figure out how to charge cell phone in car, get fuel from dead vehicles. And acting unnaturally at guarded places. I couldn't read all the book at page 294 just give up. It was such a waste of time. Who gave more than one star?? Friends? Family? Shouldn't fake ratings. I'm not going to trust star ratings any more.

Crumbling World is the first book in Surviving the End by Grace Hamilton. I love reading any book by Grace Hamilton. I love her stories. She can write a book that will pull you deep into its world from the first page leaving your world a blur.

Crumbling World was no different as it pulled me into its world. Once I picked it up and started reading I didn’t want to stop but the world around me had other plans at times which left me feeling a little frustrated.

I loved the world that was created for Crumbling World. I loved the characters and how they handled every situation they were put in. Crumbling World had me on the edge of my seat many times as I watched or felt as if I was watching the characters face the people who wanted to take their things from them. I mean why couldn’t they find their own as they had?

Crumbling World follows the journey after the EMP hit of one family as they are trying to get to Jodi’s mother Beth’s home after an EMP hits and everything goes black worldwide. Beth has been a prepper for many years. We get to see the world come alive with this family.

When the EMP hit Jodi was at the hospital with her brother Mike as he was getting his chemo treatment. Jodi’s teenage son Owen is with them as well. Jodi’s husband Shane has taken their teenage blind daughter, Violet with him to work as it was take your child to work day. Their youngest daughter Kaylee is with her grandmother Beth at her home.

Each of their journeys involves someone wanting to take their supplies from them and leave them with nothing. Jodi, Shane, and Beth all have to deal with the same problems but in different ways and with different people and it all involves a gun or two.

Chaos sets in as everyone is afraid of what is going to happen to them now that the lights have gone out across the world. No one knows how long or if they will ever be turned back on. It reminds me of the song “The Night The Lights Went Out in Georgia”.

I can’t wait to dive into the next Fallen World the book in the Surviving the End series. I can’t wait to read more about this family and where their story goes next.

I highly recommend Crumbling World to all fans of dystopian or post-apocalyptic stories. Grab a copy of Crumbling World today!

I will actually give this one 3 1/2 stars. I really like the idea and the storyline of this book. The characters are very diverse which was also a breath of fresh air. While listening to this book I really had to detach myself as I am a person with a visual impairment and one of the main characters also has a visual impairment and guide dog. At times, I could really relate to this character and some of the things she was feeling when others thought she was helpless, or how she did day-to-day tasks and accomplish them. On the other hand, I did think at times it was very unrealistic with how the guy dog and some of her behaviours were brought to light. That aside, I did enjoy this book. The storyline had a great pace and it almost rotate back-and-forth chapter to chapter with two different converging storylines. There is a cliffhanger ending but it is intended to be a series so I was expecting that. The performance was great and I enjoyed my first listen from this narrator. He even made it sound like he was talking on a telephone or was a recorded message when these came up from time to time during the story. He had different voices for each character no matter gender and you could definitely tell them apart. I will be continuing on with the series. I received a free copy of this audiobook and exchange for an honest review from audiobook boom. This in no way affected my opinion of this work.

An unremarkable tale of survival after a super CME extinguishes the lights on the continent. The account bounces between three groups of family members, separated by distance, struggling to reach the same rally point at Macon. We have husband/father Shane McDonald with his young blind daughter Violet and her guide dog Ruby. Then there’s wife/mother/sister Jodi McDonald with her brother Mike and son Owen. At the Macon rally point, Mom’s house is mother-in-law Beth with grand-daughter Calli. Each group must cope with the crisis under different circumstances while dealing with the cockroaches that come out when the lights go out. I’ve read so many survival tales that it takes something unique and exciting to warrant a high rating. Three.point.five for a good start to a new series.

Enjoyable read/listen… I do believe this was my first experience with this author and a pleasure it was. Being a big fan of post apocalyptic genre, it is always great to find another talented author.
This story tells of a family trying to find their way to “grandmas”. When the world was changed the family were not together, the wife/mother & son (teenager)were at the hospital with her Brother getting his last treatment of chemo. The husband/father & bind daughter with her guide dog we’re at the nuclear power plant where he was employed. The grandmother was home with the toddler of the family. Each character is well defined and easy to follow, sadly I wish it was an easier & event free journey for all. Looking forward to diving into book 2.

Amazing series, as is to be expected by Grace Hamilton. Chris Monterio did a great job narrating.
The characters are always fleshed out. You can relate to them. They aren’t perfect but no human ever is.
Corbin was my favorite character. Of course Beth was a close second. They were the smartest and most prepared. One mentally and one with Preps.
I loved Violet too, her strength of character brought on by determination to overcome her blindness. She was a great character. Smart, strong and competent. Loved her.

Shane and his teenage daughter, Violet, are at the Sequoyah Nuclear Plant when a coronal mass ejection occurs that wipes out power across the globe. Shane and his coworker Landon have to hurry to get the backup generators online to cool down the cores then Shane and Violet begin their slow drive to Beth's home. At the same time, Shane's wife Jodi, Jodi's brother Mike, plus Jodi and Shane's son, Owen are also on their way to Beth's, first on bicycles, then by truck. This story is full of action, ending with a cliffhanger.

I received a copy of this book in a box set via Bookfunnel and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This is fairly typical dystopian fiction, including the cliffhanger ending. And readers of my reviews know by now that I find this practice especially distasteful and frustrating. Fortunately, the characters redeem this story somewhat and the challenges they face are not so extreme that they're not believable.

Chris Monteiro performs well, giving appropriate voices to the characters.

A decent read. Kept me entertained for the most part. Slightly different focus for an EMP apocalyptic story. Best thing it had going for it was that I didn't have to skip over page after page of Carrington Event. (At least I don't think I did). Characters were okay and likable. I have read a few other of her books and if I remember right, they were also middle of the road, technically, but made up for it with slightly different twists.

The End Of The World As We Know It

A worldwide outage. Newer cars shut down. People panicking. Shaun and his family headed to his Mother-In-Law’s house who had been preparing for the end. If Surviving the End ware a TV series it would be as popular as The Walking Dead. I could of done without Violet whining and Jodi’s lack of patience with her brother Mike but other than that it was a real page turner.

“Crumbling World: A Post-Apocalyptic CME Saga Filled With Fascinating Characters & Prepper Info (Surviving the End Book 1)” Kindle Edition
by Grace Hamilton (Author) Format: Kindle Edition
My favorite character in this novel is Violet, a blind young teenager who is precocious beyond her calendar age. The authoress did a great job of portraying the mindset of this young lady as she dealt with a post-collapsed society. I shall continue with Book 2 of this six-book series.

This author is one of my go to authors in this genre and I wasn't sure how I missed this series, but now binging it.

Initially I got confused in the story as I listened and I found some of the characters a bit meh and the narration didn't help. But then it all changed the characters, the narration the plot all become like I expected it to be from this author.

Straight onto the next book in the series.

Good Lord what a complete blob of infantile pablum! I've read 100's of post apocalyptic series and have never encountered anything this bad. I love the genre so much that I'll give book 2 a quick try, but there is absolutely no way this group of incompetent beta males and frightened suburban housewives would survive even a week in that world. If you've drank the woke kool-aid, this book may appeal to you, otherwise, it's more like a comedy.

Awesome

Really loved this book. I now have to read all of her books. The characters are so real it’s like they become your best friends or worst enemies. There were several times I had to put the book down because it became so intense. Do yourself a favor and read this book as for me I’m digging into book two today.

I was reluctant to read more of this author’s books because another series (EMP Lodge) had a terrible narrator. I was thrilled that the narrator for this series is fantastic! Male narrators often struggle to voice women/girls correctly and not many come close to the esteemed RC Bray, in my opinion. This narrator, Chris Monteiro, comes close and does a great job of it.

The start of the end.

This first book in a new series was an exciting read. All the essential details on dangers, difficulties and characters was there making the results of an emp most important. Society started falling apart straight away and the race is on for survival. I'm on to the next book!

A great read.

Crumbling World is an exceptional first book in the Surviving the End series. The story is told by following a family who are travelling from different directions in 2 groups when the CME strikes. It's a constant on the edge-of-your-seat book that doesn't calm down. I totally recommend reading it.

Crumbling World, book 1 of surviving the end.

Grace Hamilton surely knows her Prepper instincts and it shows in her writing. A brilliant start to a series of books. Coronial mass episode knocks out the electrics country wide. A family has to get to their Mums. Travelling through disabled cars, people who don’t think just fight to get what they want. Will they make it.

Boring

Why do all emp, solar storm's end the same way? Follow a few family's and they always seem to survive. Why not write about the dark side. It's just my opinion but I think it would be more interesting.

Interesting book. I enjoyed the reality while it wasn't full of everyone being a prepper and knowing what to do. The characters were real in their struggles
