The only place of safety for the desperate has been destroyed.
Yvonne has finally found a place to settle, where her children can grow, and she can think about her own future. Even as she celebrates, a shock rings across the world. Someone has attacked the Sisters in the Stone Walls.
The attack is devastating, taking away the one place of refuge in the lands, tearing apart everything the Sisters have built. Yvonne is determined to find out what happened, and why, and who is responsible, and will need all her skill and knowledge to follow the trail of a resourceful and ruthless opponent.
The Rending continues Yvonne’s story which started in The Gathering. If you like your fantasy with plenty of mystery and magic, and a strong heroine, you’ll want to continue this fantasy series by Vanessa Nelson.
I am a fantasy author living in Scotland, United Kingdom and spending my days juggling the demands of an elderly, spoiled cat, two giant dogs and a host of fictional characters.
As far as the cat is concerned, she’s in charge and should always come first. The older dog’s favourite method of getting my attention is a gentle nudge with his head. At least, he would say it’s gentle. And the younger dog's attention-getting method generally involves playing with the loudest squeaky toy he can find.
I still loved it, but this book was a bit of a bridge book - book 3 wrapped up the primary arc, and this one is assembling the puzzle pieces for a new arc.
It will be interesting to see where it goes!
Re-read March 2025 The opening of this book is brutal - the attack on the Sisters (I don't consider that a spoiler, it is in the blurb) made me cry repeatedly. It's just devastating.
As I said in the original review, this book is pretty loaded with setup. The arc for this second trilogy isn't starting totally from scratch - there are a couple threads to the previous trilogy - but it is mostly new, with a lot of pieces to get into place. But it is still really engaging, at least to me, because I love the worldbuilding in this series. It's exciting to see these new places.
This is the first book in the series that doesn’t end with a villain conquered. They are still on the hunt when the last page turns. Not sure I liked that, but the rest of the story was just as good as any previous one and I love Yvonne, Guise and their cohorts!
Still HATE the covers! The characters are NOTHING even close to what is on the covers. Yvonne has long flowing hair and Guise has gray skin and long black hair. Super annoying and totally perplexing.
Again this was a quick, easy read with lots of action, good characters and an interesting story. There is mystery, magic and adventure. A very slow courtship works well. A really good series so far
This is a review for all 5 books in the series as I read them pretty much in one sitting. This was the first book I read of this author who is new to me. Let me now just say that Vanessa Nelson has become a favourite auto buy for me! This series blew me away, the characters and the interactions between people are what make a book for me, even more so than the plot. And these characters stayed with me long after I put the books down. I anticipate that this will be one of those rare series that I return to read again. The world building was delightful and intriguing, Yvonne was powerful, but not all consuming and she was humble and believable. She went through betrayals, set backs and triumphs and I lived through it all with her. Honestly these books were amazing, go read if you love any sort of fantasy (although I think these were pitched with an easy world to understand so you could be new to the genre), light romance (not the over riding story emphasis, but what there was was clean and delightful) and heartfelt characters.
Ooooo didn't get a conclusive ending this time!! Interesting...
Still loved this though! Could not be more obsessed with how the romance is developing (very slowly, very wholesomely, very respectfully). I truly love the characters, and the plot is just so stinkin good dude like I really can never figure out what the heck is going to happen next. The FMC is so badass but so relatable and so HUMAN like don't get me wrong, I love a good OP FMC here and there, but it's really nice for the FMC to actually have stakes in the fights. Like she actually gets hurt! And needs rest! What a wild concept. And the banter between her and Guise is so greatttt aw it cracks me up because it's just nice like you can tell that they're actually friends, which is such an important (and often overlooked) aspect of romantic relationships.
Dang, this is a very, very good series. So far, every adventure has been interesting and held my attention throughout.
This book has a tragedy that will cause the throats of many readers to choke up. No spoiler from me. A little girl makes a second appearance, a portent of something to come? Or a convenient slight of hand for the author? We shall see. Additionally, the appearance of someone strong enough in magic to be a potential Hunar.
Some minor technical glitches, but if this series was professionally proofed and edited, it could be a best seller and on library shelves immediately. I recommend this book to anyone inclined to read swords and sorcery. I recommend this book even if you've never read another fantasy book.
Book four of the Hundred series takes us to the home of the Sisters, once protected by stone walls that no longer stand after a devastating attack. Yvonne’s mission in this instalment is to discover who perpetrated the massacre.
This adventure is an eye-opener, sending us to a place we have not visited before and revealing Yvonne’s original hometown. Meeting her parents is a big moment for me, as I had no idea how poorly they treated her until I read the story.
A slightly longer review will be available on my site as soon as I finish reading the serie
What a great series this has turned out to be. A super captivating and engaging story, full of action, adventure, mystery, magic and a slow burn romance. I love all the characters, especially the fierce and likeable FMC Yvonne and the very intriguing and powerful MMC Guise. They work so beautifully together and even though their relationship is slowly but surely being formed, you can feel how well they fit together. A well written series full of surprises that will have you devouring these books in no time at all! Highly Recommended 😍
There have been few books in a series that continues to capture my attention like this one has. The author has woven a captivating tale about the challenges that those seeking to help others face. Good vs evil is brought fully to life in the continuation of The Hundred.
This book has no ending. Unfortunately, it looks like they were trying to get an extra book out of this story line. Very disappointing after the last three books (which were all excellent). The story itself is very good, the ending just leaves you flat. Hopefully the next book will make up for it!
From a very peaceful beginning at Joel's coming of age party to a dive straight into chaos, this installment of The Hundred has still more loss in store for Yvonne, but tempered by the love and-support of the family she has created. Political intrigue, death magic, forces of nature, and a grand mystery all rolled together into this page turner.
When I first started reading this series I thought that there was not enough introductory information, but I have definitely changed my mind and now appreciate the fullness of information woven into the progression of the story. My second series by this author and both have kept my interest fully.
This one was kind of depressing, and it ended on a cliffhanger.
The attack on the sisters was super sad. Combined with stuff going on with Yvonne and Guise's relationship, it made a lot of the book feel really heavy.
My other major issue was the cliffhanger. Really, it was more like half of a book. There was very little resolution and just the setup for more problems.
The Rending, book four of The Hundred series, is an ebook I borrowed through Kindle Unlimited (KU). This installment of the series was heart-rending, hence the title. It's hard to believe such evil could exist on top of the kidnapped and dead children in prior stories, but this books strikes right at the heart of the Sisters who aid so much of the community. Tense and emotional read.
A really intriguing story, very creative. I have read both of her series published on Kindle Unlimited & found a world 🌎 of intrigue & a different set of villains, heroes & circumstances that pull you in. Waiting for the next, enjoy a good story.
Characters were still done exceptionally well but there were typos, which drives me nuts, and this one seemed to plod more than the first 3. It was still worth reading, and I’ll definitely continue in the series, I just didn’t enjoy it as much.
Absolutely love Guise and The Hunar, Yvonne! Never adull moment, great storytelling and the dialog is perfect. Please write more about Guise and the Hunar!!!!! A pronunciation guide would be awesome addition, please, please??
Vanessa Nelson is a remarkable world builder and creator of interesting, multi-layered characters. She also writes about truly horrific evildoers, making this series a fascinating read. Start with book 1, or it’ll make little sense.
Again. You could have stopped after the first three books as that story line was complete. I liked the characters too much to stop there. A new evil is unveiled in this book and I expect that it will take the rest of the series to overcome.
I wondered how she was going to continue the series when the big bad guy was dead. Obviously, with a new bad guy, in some ways even creepier than the first.
Another good one. I found myself skipping over some of the descriptions, seemed a bit repetitive. And this one didn't have quite the depth as the earlier, but I'm looking forward to the next one.
