Missing Pieces, a semi-finalist in the 2019 Publishers Weekly BookLife Prize for Fiction, is a suspense novel set in 1998 Croatia. At its core it is a story of survival, reminiscent of the novels of Eric Ambler and John Buchan where the protagonist, who appears at first to be relatively ordinary, is drawn into a mystery she/he only barely comprehends. The amateur, thrown into the right circumstances, can react with imagination and courage in equal measure, to beat the professionals at their own game.
The setting of the Balkans highlights the fact that no matter how deeply buried, there lies the destructive nature of hatred that may rise to the surface without any warning. The conflicts of the Yugoslav war and the centuries old conflicts between Croats, Muslims and Christians, as well as the network of burgeoning terrorist groups, was an omen in 1998 of what would become a reality in 2001 and beyond.
