I got an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I'm very happy to announce (unrolls scroll) that I didn't even have to think about if I should give this less than four stars this time around, because I was really enjoying myself. Sure, some of the small problems I had before still existed in some places and I will tell you about them of course, but I simply had so much fun (...watching my favs getting tortured) that I (almost) didn't care.

Dawyn and Thaleon once again have sort of parallel stories. It's not super on the nose, but both of them are met with prejudice and hate towards dark mages AND are both confronted with the possibility of dark magic actually BEING as bad as the law states. They're both (relatively) sure at the beginning of the book, that it simply depends on the person that wields the magic and they both get tested when it comes to that belief. Of course it's much more personal for Thaleon who is certainly in the more dangerous position regarding that topic, but I thought Dawyn's struggle was the more interesting one. He is essentially on the outside. He does not know how it feels to have magic and what influence it might have on a person - he can just see what it can do and it can be terrifying. Especially in this book, where he learns first hand what dark mages can and will do to innocent people - now, in theory every magic user could do the same and we know that they're not all innocent daisies, free of cruel thoughts, but those aren't the ones Dawyn meets this time. It's going to be interesting to see if his beliefs will shift in any way after this.

Luckily he has a new friend around this time and it amuses me to no end that Dawyn seems to collect pretty men I want to ship him with. Everyone has to have a talent I guess! Fanvi isn't just pretty, though. He's prickly, sarcastic, doesn't like to get his clothes dirty and is very very good at what he's doing. Their friendship was my favorite thing in this book and if they don't end up together I will grab all of my legos and throw them onto all the floors in the author's house!

Thaleon on the other hand is kind of stuck in this typical heroes journey. Looking for some mystical object that somehow no one else has ever been able to find? Check. Strangers who somehow help him along the way out of the goodness of their hearts? Check. Stumbling over all the monsters and dangers that appear in legends? Check. If it wasn't for his struggle with the dark magic (and without his entertaining benefactors that didn't really get much page time this time), his story would be boring to me. I still don't mind reading it, but I'm not super attached to it? If I had to decide on which brother's story I'd rather continue to read, I'd choose Dawyn in a heartbeat. It's not even a competition at this point and I wish it was a little more even? There is nothing wrong with his part of the story, I just feel like it's missing something.

Apropos missing something: I kind of want a map. I can't even tell how far the brothers are away from each other or how far in which direction they went in this book. Also, I still can't grasp what these characters are taught in school/the military about their own country. Sometimes they know things and other times they have to be told facts about important cities/institutions that you'd think they'd know by now. I mean, there is exposition and then there is "Do you regularly fall asleep in geography and history lessons?".

I'm really looking forward to the next book. My legos are ready.

I was given an E-Arc by the author in exchange for an honest review.
"The ground shook as the giant howled and stomped. A
shaky glance up revealed hundreds of arrows buried into
the creature’s back. Another volley of arrows flew through
the air and embedded themselves in the blue flesh."

N.K. Leem, you have destroyed my soul 10x over again. The Shape of Nightmares is a high adult fantasy. It is a true masterpiece and I love it even more than the first book 'Fractures.' I honestly can't help but compare some of her characters qualities to those in Lord of the Rings. I even expressed to Leem which characters I thought of while reading her book. I'm not giving spoilers of that discussion.. all I will say is "ALL HAIL RIEL." <---Badass female character alert.

I connected well with all of the characters in this book, even the new ones. Thaleon,Lyris, Riel, and Dawyn continue to be among my favorites. I attached myself to the new ones just as quickly as before. I mean I wouldn't mind a spin off about some scary Theoden-esk characters?! *Laughs hysterically but also, deadly serious.*

I am a slow reader but I've been up reading The Shape of Nightmares since 0730 and finished it at 1640(4:30), but I couldn't put it down. There are creatures in this book that were unlike those I have ever read about. I love how original this story is. How she created another type of monster that isn't the stereotypical. But even though she included giants and dragons she was able to weave them into such a masterpiece.

"As they passed a fork in the road—one leading to the
castle and the other heading deeper into the forest—a
stifling silence fell over them as always.
Neither Thaleon nor Laurits spoke until the trail into
the deep woods lay well behind them—the same path they
had emerged from years ago bound by a terrible secret."

I was nail biting (okay it was more like gif sending Leem) the entire time I was reading. To see the character development from 'Fractures,' was a scary process. I worried what might happen to the beloved characters I had latched onto from before. Leem managed to destroy me several times in the process, then build me back up. You will hurt from this but you will be made tough. *Crying brb*

Overall, I am adding Shape of Nightmares to my list of favorite reads for 2020. I highly recommend this sequel!

Shape of Nightmares begins three years after the events of Fractures and follows Dawyn and Thaleon through their next adventures.
Dawyn, who has been training in the military to become a dark mage hunter, finds himself thrown into a life or death situation, trying to keep both him and his friend alive.
Meanwhile, Thaleon has been training diligently at a magic school, while still trying to hide a dangerous secret from those around him. When one of his friends is poisoned, he must travels to a dangerous land of a ice and monsters to find the antidote, knowing that his secret could be revealed at any moment, which would mean death for both him and his found family.

My thoughts:
I loved this book so much! Just like the first book, the magic system and world building really blew me away! It’s so intricate and well thought out, and it just really feels like this would should actually exist.
Beyond that, there were two aspects of this story that really resonated with me on an emotional level:
The first was that I really liked how Dawyn was able to talk about his PTSD with his friend. I think it’s a good reminder for people like me who have PTSD that it’s okay to talk about trauma and get support from friends and loved ones.
And the second was the parallel between Thaleon’s fear of his secret being discovered to issues in real life, such as LGBTQ+ people who are still in the closet and are afraid of being outed. It was a really good analogy and, as someone in the LGBTQ+ community, I found a certain amount of comfort in seeing prejudice and stereotypes being addressed through the analogy of magic.
-
All in all, I loved this book even more than the first and I am so excited to be able to read the third book in this epic series!
-
Trigger warnings: violence and torture.

Review to come very soon!

UPDATE:

Change is coming as people discern the powers of val and elar differently, but what will happen when Dawyn and Thaleon end up at opposing sides of a looming war on beliefs? Shape of Nightmares is the action-packed, expansive sequel to Fractures that challenges the norm in the world of our beloved main characters in this series that promises nothing but greatness and an interesting conversation about gray morality.

I received an e-ARC of the novel from the author in exchange for an honest review. Following my appreciation for the first book, I accepted the offer to review this second book because I truly believe in the series’ direction and message. True to my expectations, the book pushes on the message that not everything is black and white and exceptions are ever-present. Building on the success of the first book, Shape of Nightmares expands on the world in the series wonderfully by exploring new lands, creatures, and beliefs that all exist in the world of our characters. As to its pacing, I love how the story maintains the appropriate intensity for each scene prompting them to be effective. The fight scenes make the reader worry for the characters while the more dialogue-based scenes are light-hearted and balance out the intensity of the action. As for the message, I love the direction the series is taking as to the moral grayness of each character. This portrayal replicates the differences we find in our world and allows individualism to drive the story forward. More than that, the message creates a conversation that shakes the culture of discrimination that is sadly prevalent in both the series and the real world. My favorite aspect of the series is the lore because the story is full of uniquely-crafted creatures that have never been witnessed before. The creativity required to visualize such creatures and incorporate them in a world is mind-blowing and I admire how this world is formed. The series is shaping to be a great one and I believe that more trouble is looming over the horizon in the coming books and I highly appreciate the seeds that are being planted in this installment.

Just like the first book, I am grateful to N.K. Leem to trust me enough to send an early copy of her book to enjoy and review it. It brings me so much joy to say that since the first book in the series, the storytelling has improved greatly. The transitions flow smoothly, the descriptions are more concrete, and the world is vastly growing. Leem truly knows how to convert constructive criticism and apply and strengthen the series which is evident in the beautiful way the story is told. This second book tells a more compelling and holistic story that feels familiar to those who are fond of reading the great fantasy series. This book honestly feels like reading The Inheritance Cycle, one of my all-time favorite series, for the first time with its great world and unique creatures and Leem deserves credit for that. Because of how much the story has improved, I look forward to reading the next book with even higher expectations and a wider view of the world.

I truly love the various characters of this book because of the different flavors that give the story a delicious taste. Thaleon shows so much growth from the first book and I love the potential he possesses in changing the way the people perceive mages. Thaleon is an adorable character who I imagine will grow with the series and end up as a character who will help shape the future of the world. Dawyn shows an equal amount of growth and I love the way his perception of mages shift because of his experiences. I am rooting for both characters and I long for them to band together and really shatter the mirror of delusion that fogs the eyes of the people. The second book comes with an array of likable side characters who grow with the main characters. Rielaron is the epitome of strong, independent female leaders and I love seeing the possible flaw regarding her personality. This potential shows that each character walks a fine line between good and evil and I love how they undergo different struggles. Another great addition to this cast of characters is Fanvi and everything he represents. Fanvi is such a lovable and powerful character who represents those who are judged based on who they are but prove to be formidable and powerful people when given the chance to show who they could be. The characters are the heart and soul that give the story power to be as great as it is and I cannot wait to see how each of them progresses.

Shape of Nightmares has a cover that’s “eye-gasmic”, as I’ve communicated with Leem during the cover reveal. The cover depicts so much depth regarding the story and its message, telling readers that no matter how dark the world perceives you, there will always be a spark that’s shining within while also conveying the danger of being consumed by the fire within. I’m not sure if it’s intentional but I love what I think the cover represents mainly because it complements the characters’ development and the series’ overarching message. The summary does a good job of narrating the story without giving out spoilers but I feel like something is lacking. I feel like the dangers our characters face are downplayed a bit and I wish the summary would suggest that they face grave peril. Overall, the book does a great job of selling itself and I wouldn’t hesitate to pick up this book when I see it in a bookstore.

It is a great honor to be part of the series’ early readers and I’m thankful for all the series has achieved so far. Following this growth, I look forward to seeing the great dangers that are coming and seeing how the story and the characters deal and grow from the experience.

This was a perfect sequel to Fractures!

Shape of Nightmares picks up three years after the events of Fractures, and though I found the ending of the previous book a little abrupt, the beginning was pretty good for this one!

Thaleon and Dawyn are each working towards their own goals, held back by the circumstances of their respective situations, but fighting nonetheless! Dawyn is training to be a wehr while Thaleon is well into his mage studies, and they both think the other is dead. Thaleon has the additional problem of being a valekyn and he has to hide his dark magic.

Thaleon sets out on a quest to find the athellium, when a series of events lead to his friend Lyris being poisoned. Dawyn on the other hand has to deal with the prejudices that many harbor, and the actions of the valekyns that put him and his new mage friend in danger!

This book had an amazing mix of fantasy elements, fast paced action and such well developed characters! I loved seeing Dawyn and Thaleon go on their personal journeys! And finally Dawyn has a new companion - Fanvi, a carefree, sarcastic and talented mage! I loved the development of the friendship between them and I'm so shipping them together! The things that they had to go through had my heart breaking, but you can see how these experiences end up shaping Dawyn and his feelings on the valekyn!

I'm equal parts excited and terrified for what might happen when Dawyn and Thaelon meet each other again in the future! I hope we get to see it in the next book!

If you're looking for a unique and well developed dark fantasy series with amazing characters I'd definitely suggest this one! Can't wait for book three!

4.5! I loved this one even more than the first book! Thank you to the author for an arc to review!

Our story picks up three years after the events of book one. Thaleon is still at Allesdale completing his mage training. He’s working through classes and doing shifts in the infirmary with Lyris. But after an attack on someone he cares for, Thaleon embarks on a dangerous quest to the frozen wasteland of Taliehin. The journey will be long and difficult, and full of unknown dangers.
Meanwhile, Dawyn is training as a wehr in the Crown’s Army, ready to hunt down dark mages. But when a mission goes wrong, Dawyn is stuck in a brutal fight he never imagined he'd be in.

So once again, our brothers still don’t know the other is alive. I’m still waiting for the big reveal and their reunion. Some things seem to be setting us up for that in the book(s) to come. This time around, I felt more interested in Dawyn’s story. It was so action packed. And the addition of Fanvi was fabulous. I adore him. I ship them so dang hard. I loved seeing their friendship grow and develop. Not to say that I wasn’t interested in Thaleon’s story! Because there was a lot of action there too! The plot is so compelling and keeps you hooked. One thing, I would really love a map. It would be cool and helpful to understand where everything is.

I love the way we continue to see the conflict of Valekyn vs elarkyn. We see many characters questioning if all dark mages are inherently evil. Thaleon has believed that it’s on more of a case by case basis, but even he has some moments of self doubt and questioning of his beliefs. It’s an interesting question to see the characters grapple with as they have encounters with dark mages.

And of course, as I’ve come to expect with this series, I am in pain. I’m hurting for my poor boys and all that has happened to them! After book one, I was really rooting for some happy times! And we definitely do get some. But there’s still a lot of pain to go around! But don’t let that deter you from this series!! I will gladly subject myself to more pain because the story is just so good. NK Leem should definitely be let into the Evil Authors Club with Jay Kristoff and Sabaa Tahir. I know to expect pain from those authors but also that I will love it the whole time.

Well this got rambley again, so I’ll stop! But. If you’re a fantasy fan who doesn’t mind when books hurt you, I highly recommend this series! It’s an excellent high fantasy with a fast paced plot and fabulous character development! I can’t wait for more!!

I received a free copy of this book courtesy of the author in exchange for an honest review.

Much like the first book, this one keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time. Leem is adept at making each moment last and keeping your interest accruing the longer you read. There is a lot to be said for being able to do so – it makes the pace of the book far faster. This book has a slow build, as did the last one, and yet the momentum is there. Something is happening, the plot is progressing, the characters are getting arcs. There is nothing better than a book that draws you in with both plot and characters!

If you liked the first book, you are definitely going to like this one as well! There is much from the first book that comes back in this one. Starting with Thal and Dawyn. Still separated, both still think the other is dead. This informs many of their actions and the consequences. At the same time, they are now on “opposite” sides, and we get to see both points of view of these worlds. This is really interesting because sometimes in fantasy you only get to see one. And yet in this one you get to see two! It is quite well done.

I really appreciate the shift of POVs and the clarity of them. I do not get one character mixed up for the other as there is a clear voice distinction between the two. We also get an awesome character whom I adore with all my heart! Fanvi is my new favorite. There is so much to love about him, and his arc. Like Dawyn he gets a full arc in this book and it shows. He has so much potential in the future books. What is really exciting is that Leem is talented at making these characters jump off the page and come alive.

I really liked this installment of the series. Unlike a lot of sequels it didn’t stall out, it kept pushing forward and I am very excited to see what happens next!

This book was SO GOOD! N. K. Really knows how to tell a story from start to finish and how to keep you on the edge of your seat, wanting more. She also knows how to tug on your heartstrings, how to make you empathize with the characters and how to crush your heart and mend it all in the span of fifty pages or less. This one was a page-turner for me, and I already want more now that I’ve finished!

The magic system and universe in this book is so intricate and well-developed, as well as incredibly interesting. The prejudice imbedded in some characters is so believable and realistic too. Despite this being a fantasy, everything about it is so realistic!

I love our main characters Dawyn and Thaleon and that we get to see the world from their POVs. I’ve loved watching their (tragic) journeys unfold so far in the two books Fractures and Shape of Nightmares. I’m anxious to see what will happen next and where their current paths will take them.

Please read this series if you love fantasy! It is available NOW through Amazon!

Fractures: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.25
Shape of Nightmares: ⭐⭐⭐.75

____

⭐⭐⭐.75
Note: I received an e-ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Shape of Nightmares is the second book in the series Ledgers of a Dark Mage. It follows Thaleon and Dawyn years later in the continuation of their respective paths. Thaleon continues his studies in the Allesdale infirimary, while Dawyn finds himself in the Crown's army. But major changes shake up their lives as they must leave their comfort zones - and begin to long for the days past and for the other.

Whenever I start series, I grow nervous for the second book, especially in trilogies, because the second book oftentimes feels like filler. However, Shape of Nightmares felt like an example of what second books should look like. Although the central plotline did feel like a one-off, it does demonstrate a purpose for the overall storyline. Additionally, there's more anticipation in the second-half for what is to come, and that is shown with the characters themselves. (A big part of this likely has to do with how the first book emotionally destroyed me, and I'm so attached to these two now because of that, but it's made for an excellent storyline nonetheless!)

Something that I really liked in particular about this installment, despite the lack of a map, is that this world feels so massive and detailed. This is despite the fact that the storylines weave to a certain extent, but there are so many small details throughout that give some scope on how thought-out the world is. From the different flora in different regions to the board games and activities the characters take part in, the setting feels so complete. And I anticipate that will continue with the installments to come.

Despite the years' passing since the last book, there is quite a bit of character development in Shape of Nightmares that contributes to the overall story. This made all the difference from a one-off story to a true continuation in the series. Combining this with the moral issues and current events that both characters face, I look forward to how their views will change or remain in the coming books as they become more experienced in their fields and in life.

The only inconsistencies I really noticed had to do with editing. At times as well, sometimes the writing can be straightforward and more telling than completely describing the setting. But overall, Shape of Nightmares was a very solid second installment in the Ledgers of a Dark Mage series. If you haven't picked up this series and are a fan of high fantasy, I still highly recommend it. The world is expansive and you'll be hooked to Thaleon and Dawyn's story from the very beginning. I'm looking forward to the newer books in the series and look forward to (and have predictions for) what's next!

This was such a great sequel to the already great Fractures! I received an ARC copy from the author in exchange for an honest review, so here it is.

Honestly, I loved this book even more than the first one. We can see how much our characters have grown, and we are also introduced to some new ones - my favorite definitely being Fanvi! I feel like I need to talk about him here for a bit. He's sarcastic, playful, teasing and flirtatious, but he is also extremely skilled in magic. He knows how to do his job - well, when he wants to. I loved his character so much, because it was new and interesting, and he wasn't all good-hearted from the very beginning. That's why he's probably my favorite in this book.

Now, for the brothers - the book again follows both of them, just like in the Fractures. This time, I must say that I loved Dawyn's storyline more than Thaleon's (I loved Thaleon's more in the first book), because it was somehow way more interesting this time. I'm not saying that Thaleon's story isn't interesting - quite the contrary! There are fights, bad guys, poisoned friend, distant frozen land, unreachable cure, unexpected help, and best of all - new beasts! Thaleon is all prepared for a long journey to save his friend Lyris, which won't be easy at all. Then given all of those, why did I say I liked Dawyn's part in this book more than Thaleon's?
Well - I needed, and I absolutely LOVED that spark of romance! Author, just so you know, I'm not shipping our dear Dawyn with anyone else now. Nope. This is just perfect for me and I'm ready to see all the slow burning and little flames of this relationship. Can't wait.

But on the other side, the events of this book definitely aren't all happy-go-lucky. You can already see it in the book title, and let me tell you, that's just how it is. Shape of Nightmares, right there. There are many gut-wrenching scenes in some parts of the book, and seeing my beloved character getting tortured, then healed, just to be tortured again - it was so hard to read. There are also gruesome fights involving poor innocent children, there's a constant hate between valekyns and elarkyns, and we can exactly see why.
We can see why valekyns are hated when they captured Dawyn and Fanvi, and we can also see how Dawyn lost his last bit of empathy for them after he and Fanvi barely escaped from them alive. But we can also see how irational can that hate be, while following our Thaleon on his journey.
Thaleon is a valekyn, but he uses his dark magic to save lives only to get beaten and almost sent to his death for it. There's basically no justice for valekyns at all, and I can understand their hate towards the elar. I can't wait to see what the author has in mind for the next book.

And last but not least - this cover is everything! It's just gorgeous. It was the first thing that caught my eye, and if I saw it in bookstores, it would definitely be a cover buy for me. I'm all prepared for the third book!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

I devoured this book, it was so fast paced, so much happens in this that you never get the chance to get bored. The thing I most enjoy is the characters, get me to love your characters and you have me hooked until the very end!
Dawyn is still a kind hearted, self sacrificing character. His ability to care for others even without knowing them and stand up to injustice wherever he sees it is awesome and I love his story arc. In this book he is again faced with the cruelty of mages and you can see how it changes him and others around him. I see a lot of conflicted feelings on his part in the future but I have faith that he'll not completely fall into the hole of hating everyone with val blindly like he could after what he has gone through, and if he does it won't last forever.
Thaleon, well he's still adorable, let's face it, I spend most of the time just wanting to hug him. He's grown since the first book, a little less like a helpless kid to a brave young man who would do anything for his friends. Though he still hasn't lost that innocence. It wasn't really until he was a bit into his journey that I felt as invested in his story arc. I think because I'm still not that invested in his friendships just yet (though I love any interaction he has with Laurits, since I've always had a soft spot for the 'I'm kind of grumpy and hard on you but I actually really care about you' characters) I think it's because he has to hide so much of himself from them and that in turn makes the friendship between them not feel all that deep.
And now to my new book baby, Fanvi. I adore him! Pretty much as soon as I knew of his existence, I knew I would love him. He seems vain and obnoxious when we first meet him but as the story progresses he shows himself to be compassionate, super powerful and steadfast. The stuff he goes through in this....wow. If he and Dawyn don't end up together I'll have lost all hope in this world! And my book twin has offered to share her Legos with me so be warned!
I couldn't give this a full 5 stars mostly because it still kind of feels like reading a fanfiction in places, like character description, everyone is just so darn beautiful and sometimes things were a little too convenient for getting the characters out of messes and progressing the plot though I see definite improvement from the first book.
Overall I highly recommend this series, I guarantee you'll love these characters as much as I do.
And just for the record, I'd love a short story showing some of Fanvi's life growing up in Helfirim :)

#cookiereads Shape of Nightmares (Ledgers of a Dark Mage Book 2) by N.K Leem @n.k.leem ⚔️
Three years have passed since the events of the last book (Fractures). Thaleon is studying to be a healer. No one has discovered that he is a Valekyn (dark mage). One day he and Lyris go out for patient calls and they are attacked. Lyris is poisoned. Problem is the only antidote is from Taliehin, a icy place where no one has returned. Thaleon feels that he must go and save Lyris. Can he survive the journey to Taliehin and save his beloved Lyris? Can he make this journey without anyone discovering his darkest secret? ❄️
Dawyn is training to become a wehr (soldier who hunts and captures Valekyn). He must learn to disable the spells from the mages. This is where he meets Fanvi, a mage who was trained at a place called Helfirim. Fanvi is cocky and wears colorful clothing. But these two form a bond. Could there be something more between the two of them? ❤️
As Dawyn advances more in his training, he is send on mission to track down Valekyns. One day he and Fanvi go to a forest; they are essentially ambushed and captured by Valekyn. Will they escape from the Valekyn? 🧝
Rarely has a sequel to a series surpasses the first book. This book is one of those books. This is an awesome sequel to the series! The first book I found the parts of Thaleon kinda dull and couldn’t wait to read about Dawyn. This book I loved reading about Thaleon just as much as I loved reading about Dawyn. 🤜
🚨 Spoiler alert 🚨 one of the best parts of the book (possibly anything I have read this year) is the part where someone wants to buy Fanvi after the games. Fanvi begs the buyer to take him and Dawyn; Fanvi will do anything the buyer says. The buyer asks Fanvi if he loves Dawyn. He says yes!!! Ugh my heart melted!!! Then I was mad when later on Fanvi says he was “acting.” Will Fanvi ever declare his love for Dawyn? 🚨
3.5 paws out of four paws! T minus 9 days till book 3 and I will definitely buy that book! #ledgersofadarkmageseries #shapeofnightmares #dawynandfanvi #thaleon #valekyn #corgireads #dogsreadingbooks #bookstagrammer #corgisofinstagram #corgilife #bluemerlecorgi

Thank you N.K. Leem for sending me an ARC copy of your book!

Are you a fan of fantasy? Do you like magic? Worlds filled with power, action, and mystical creatures? Then this book is for you!

I initially fell in love with this author when I was offered an ARC copy of her first book to this series, Ledgers of a Dark Mage: Fractures. You can check out my full review on Goodreads.

First things first, can we talk about the cover?! It is so great! I also love the cover of the first book as well! They are so colorful, so captivating, and so reflective of the story inside. I really appreciate when the cover of a book can get the reader’s attention AND when it is relative to what is inside the book. I feel like not many books do that these days– but she is on point with this! I LOVE IT!

I truly love N.K. Leem’s writing style! She is so descriptive and is so talented in her storytelling. She so easily paints scenes with her writing. This continues into her next book– she does not disappoint!

“The dragon screamed as a massive inferno engulfed one of its wings. The flames crept along its body, fueled by the dark oil from the barrels. It rolled on the snow-covered ground screeching– the flap of its giant wings sent heavy gusts into the air.”

I also love her characters within her books! They have such depth and I have enjoyed watching them develop throughout this next book. My favorite part was the POVs within the book and how we got to watch two parallel story lines develop a part from each other. It kept me engaged! I also loved how this book started a few years after where we stopped in the first book. I love when books do that! It gives a sense of maturity to the characters that the readers can appreciate.

I cannot wait for the next book to come out! I am also excited to see what else N.K. Leem does with her writing career! She is very talented! I highly recommend this series and this author!

I was provided an eARC from the author in exchange for my honest review.

I enjoyed this book even more than the first installment, and for me that is rare. Second books so often feel like placeholders, and this book was satisfying in a way that many middle books are not. I felt that the arc in this book for both POV characters was more defined as they moved along their parallel journeys. Thaleon has been studying magic and is still suppressing his natural gift of dark magic (val), for a weaker light magic (elar) that is not natural to him. Val is considered evil in this society and its practitioners killed, though on the surface there is not much difference between the two magics. In both characters' stories, we see practitioners of Val do evil things to our heroes, seeming to justify the world's hatred of valekyns. What I loved best about the first book is still present here, is the examination of good and evil. This book expands upon that, showing the effect of oppression on crime and how we differentiate race or culture and individual behavior.

Thaleon's story is action packed, as he races to save the life of a friend that has been poisoned. It is non-stop action as we move from situation to situation in a race for the cure. If I have one qualm about the book it is that I would've loved this to slow down a little bit at times as I felt like all of the great character moments were with Dawyn. I love Thaleon, but for me my favorite part of this story is absolutely Dawyn's journey to become a wehr of the Crown. He becomes friends with a Mage, Fanvi, who is probably my favorite character of the series thus far. Fanvi is flirty and confident and I super need him and Dawyn to make out immediately. I am absolutely going to need that to happen in book 3, please.

This is a great series that is a quick read and is full of great twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat. I can't wait to read the next installment!

First, I would like to thank the author for giving me an ARC in return for an honest review. Now, this is going to be a long one so let's get started! :D

Ok, this book was epic!! Not only is this one of the best sequels I've read so far, but it's also one of the best books of 2020! I was constantly at the edge of my seat while reading this one and didn't want to stop until I reached the end of the book. I felt so many emotions throughout entire the book. That's because a lot happened. A loooot! That being said, I live for these kinds of action-packed adventures. Especially if there are ice dragons AND giants involved. If I had to guess how much my emotions were all over the place, I would probably reach Boyle on a scale of one to Charles Boyle!!!

4 years have passed since the events of book 1 and I was really curious about where our characters are at this point. Reading this first part about the progression of their lives was so much fun. Dawyn is so close to becoming an official Wehr and Thal is practically an awesome mage since he's is pretty much going on all kinds of missions. :D

One of my favorite new characters has got to be Fanvi. He's charming, witty, and hilarious sometimes. I just wish he and a certain someone would be in a relationship already because their friendship is so precious. Their chemistry is also insane, so I know for a fact that their relationship will be epic!!
Another thing I'm still really hoping for is that Thal and Dawyn reunite at some point in their lives. That'll be so awesome. :D

Overall, this book was a quick read. These boys have a special place in my heart and I just can't wait to get to the next book! :D

Shape of Nightmares continues the story of Dawyn and Thaleon. I was glad I had the foresight to order this book along with the first, because I dived right in the same day I finished reading Fractures.

In comparison to the first, I felt that the prose had a more mature quality overall. While this is likely a result of the natural sharpening of the author’s writing skills since her debut, it also felt natural considering that the characters have matured too.

It has been a few years since the end of the first book and both of the boys are settled in their news lives. With the introductions of the first book behind us, the plot and character arcs really take off in this installment.

How can I write this review without mentioning Fanvi? He may not be one of the main protagonists, but he is absolutely the star of the show - or at least trying to be! He effectively wormed his way into the story and into my heart. His and Dawyn’s blossoming connection was my favourite part of this novel. Also I continue to be intrigued by the further exploration of elar (light magic), val (dark magic), and Wehrs in this society.

While I enjoyed the first book, I loved this one, especially Dawyn’s chapters! If you had any reservations with the first book, I urge you to continue because this seems like a series that gets better with each entry. 5 stars!

Finally - a small detail - but I appreciated the healer characters and tenderness of the infirmary scenes.

"Sometimes, there is nothing to be done but to make the patient’s last moments as comfortable as they can be. Us healers often have a hard time accepting that - especially when the patient is a loved one."

I received and ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Shape of Nightmares, Leems second book in the Ledgers of a Dark Mage series again follows Dawyn and Thaleon in their wild adventures, taking place four years after the events of her debut novel, Fractures. Now the boys are four years older, advancing on the paths that were shoved upon them in the first book and mostly succeeding. This second installment is living up to its title, it was again, full of nightmares for both boys.

What I loved about this installment is that there was even more magical “creatures” and elements in this one! Dragons, creepy magical twins, giants and more! There was a lot of action and a lot of heartache of course. My heart AGAIN was ripped out and stomped on as these boys just try to live their “normal” while still believing the other is long dead. I also STILL love Reil as a character, she’s fierce and loving of her friends and will try to protect them at all costs! Also the tender moment shared between Thal and the men that helped raise him?! Ugh, it gave me ALL of the feels!

I can go on and on but long story short, if you’re looking for a fast passed read that will give you all of the feels and feed your appetite for adventure, this is it! I’m excited for the next installment!

I received ARC from the Author. Thanks NK.

This book start after 3 years where last book ended.

Thal and Dawyn have made some good friends and have settled somewhat in their lives.

But of course if all stays well we won’t get a story!

I liked all the characters, Dawyn being my favorite. I enjoyed his part of story and also the way his character is growing. I was happy that in this one he is not as helpless as he was in the first book and things are pretty much in this control. His story had an almost happy ending in this part.

Thal’s character however is still the same, I wish he can learn from his past mistakes and in three years would have learned to control the val better. But looks like he is learning how to heal others but not how to conceal his true magic. It was quite painful to watch him getting into same problem again. But his story arc was equally adventurous and I loved the ending of how he found what he had set out to get in the cold mountains.

I am totally terrified about the time when these stories will converge and I am praying that NK wont put the brothers against each other.

I will highly recommend this action packed adventure ride ! waiting for the next one soon.

I love a good fantasy book that pulls you in and takes you on a wild journey! The second book in the “Ledgers of a Dark Mage” series, “Shape of Nightmares,” does just that. In this book we follow the journey of the main characters, Dawyn and Thaleon, who are brothers but separated on different paths. Both possess magical powers - one has the type of magic that is forbidden and cruelly punished, while the other has the ability to see and undo magic spells. They are on different paths yet both are doing their best to survive in a world that has taken away their families and their childhood. Through their journeys you will encounter fantastical creatures and magic spells that stir the imagination. I relished every page of this second book as I read about the progress of the main characters. The two brothers are forced to toughen up and strengthen their magical abilities in a dangerous world, yet at the same time their vulnerability and compassion shine through as their love for their friends and families is their driving force. I am already excited for the third installment of the series!

I really enjoyed the second book in this series as much as the first one, if not even a bit more. Once again we are following the adventures of Dawyn and Thaleon. They are older now and they have more experience. Dawyn is adapted in his new life in training. We are introduced to a new character Fanvi, Dawyn's mage friend. I really liked Fanvi's character. He is funny, strong and loyal. Their part of the story was very interesting to read. Even though they went through some seriously hard times, being almost sold back to Scyrta, it was excellently written.
Meanwhile, Thaleon is in some trouble of his own. His friend Lyris has been poisoned and he has to travel to a land of ice and monsters to find a cure.
In this book we are also introduced to some new and original monsters.
I really liked the writing style and how complex the characters are. I can't wait to read more adventures in this series

I received an e-ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
~
Sequel of Ledgers of the Dark Mage, this story continues 3 years later after the Fractures, with Thaleon who's training as a Mage and Dawyn training as a Wehr. And the story begins when one of Thaleon's friend got poisoned and the only way to cure it is by getting the mythical herbs in the dangerous land. The only thing he needs to do is to get back safely while hiding his identity, a Valekyn. Dawyn also face a great danger when he and his friend got captured by Valekyn. In this book we can see their perspective of the world around them, how people judge Valekyn, how Valekyn treated others. I got emotional when reading it, so many injustice around them and yet they can do nothing. I really can't wait for their next journey and hopefully they'll meet each other again :')
Overall I gave this book 4.5/5 🌟

This arc was provided to me by the author for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this next installment in the series! Thaleon and Dawyn's story continues in this next book after a bit of a time jump. Thal is now 15 and Dawyn 18. I really loved how the world was expanded in this one. It was so interesting to see Thal and Dawyn explore this new world and all of its trappings now that they're both a bit more mature and sure of themselves. The magic system was also explained a bit more, which was good to see. Again, like the first book, I enjoyed Thaleon's chapters, but Dawyn has officially become my favorite of the two. There's just something about him that really makes me love him. They're both put through the ringer in this book and I felt for these boys. There was also a bit more action than the first, so it definitely made me want to fly though it so that I could figure out what was happening with our boys! This series is giving me some old-school fantasy vibes and I really love that about it. Definitely give this series a try if you like a harrowing and action-filled fantasy adventure!

As I great fan of fantasy genre, I want to say, that if you haven’t read Fractures (Ledgers of a Dark Mage Book 1), you should definitely do that. And once you enter this magic world, you simply can’t leave it without reading the whole story till the end.
Second book - it begins three years after the events of Fractures and follows Dawyn and Thaleon through their next adventures. This story is full of adventure, magic, friendship…
The new characters are very interesting individuals. It’s so hard to pick only one favourite character.
and the writing is just amazing - 5/5.
If you love fantasy or adventure, or even better – both, you should start this amazing book series as soon as possible.

Let’s just say the the title matches the book.

Honestly, after the tragedies in the first book I was rooting for some happiness. Alas this was not the case, and just like I was weeping through the first instalment of the series I wept through the second as well.

This book is well written and it’s a fast read. We meet our boys Thaleon and Dawyn 4 years after the events of Fractures. Dawyn, now training to be a Wehr, and Thaleon, a mage in training at Allesdale, set out on two different paths while still thinking that the other is dead.

It’s like Jon and Arya all over again, my heart is breaking for my boys (due to every single event in this book) and I hope we get the third book fast!

It has been 3 years since the events of the first book and both brothers have improved in their abilities and both of them will unknowingly be on their way to danger and adventure.

Thaleon must take a journey full of danger and ice to find a magic flower that will save her friend from death, but his journey is not easy, not only does he have to hide his magic, which is a symbol of evil and hatred, and in his mision he will have several challenges that he will be test it.

Meanwhile, Dawyn, after training to detect magicians, finally has his first mission, it seems easy, but is not.

This is a book for those who like adventure (and suffer a little) and magic.

I really liked how the characters evolved, they are more mature and I like the relationship between the protagonists and their friends, you can feel their love and loyalty.

First and foremost I would like to point out that N.K. Leem is a QUEEN! Shape of Nightmares has everything I could have wanted in a sequel and more. I loved how much Thaleon and Dawyn’s characters grew from the first book. Following them on their separate journeys, there was no shortage of action or nail biting encounters. I really enjoyed getting to see more of the magic and the new creatures that were introduced. I can’t wait to visit this world again and see what’s in store for my boys in the next book!

This is the second book in the Ledgers of a Dark Mage series. I highly recommend checking out the first book, Fractures.

Three years on, Thaleon and Dawyn have well established new lives. Thaleon continues his magic studies and healing at Allesdale, well on his way to become a Mage. Dawyn has made a place for himself in the King’s Army, training to be a Mage hunter.

However, peace can never last. Both boys are forced to once again fight for their lives as they embark on unplanned adventures that lead them straight into danger.

I enjoyed this book even more than the first one. It reminds me of a cross between The Name of the Wind, Full Metal Alchemist and Game of Thrones. All in a really good way!

We see the boys grow and find their place in the world, only to have it turned upside down once again. But with their new skills, they are better equipped to deal with what life throws at them. It’s still a pretty rough journey. I felt their pain so many times and wanted it to end! Luckily, they are strong.

The old favourite characters are still around, and some really cool new ones. My new favourite is Fanvi, an eccentric Mage that befriends Dawyn.

This book has more dark Mages, and wonderful gory details of dark magic and torture. But also strong friendships and unbreakable bonds that you really care about.

Shape of Nightmares is the second book in the Ledgers of a Dark Mage series; a series that just keeps getting better!

In this installment, four years have passed in relative peace. The 'brothers' still believe each other to be dead, but they have both built new lives filled with purpose; Dawyn as an agent for the Crown and Thaleon as a mage and healer.

Then, all hell breaks loose in both of their worlds, and we get to follow the boys on their wild adventures.

I have sooooo much love for this series and especially this book! N.K.Leem has built an amazing world of wonder and heartache.

Not only do I adore Thaleon and Dawyn, but they each have a sassy sidekick that keeps the dialogue fresh and funny. I now live for Laurits and Fanvi. They're making laughs and breaking my heart on the regular. Plus, the conflict between the Crown and 'dark' mages means that, at some point, they'll all come together and things will get heated. Part of me wants to get to the fireworks, but the other side of me wants to keep the boys protected. I'm so conflicted and invested!

This book was full of brutality and humanity. It breaks your heart, then rebuilds it just to break it again. However, love keeps your hope alive, and when all is said and done, you'll be dying for the next installment!
