The First Husband may sound like every other domestic-type thriller but it was anything but. Trina and her friend Jenn head off to India for a once in a lifetime experience. They dream of the golden sands, bustling markets, searing heat and the pungent smell of spices filling the air. What Trina was not expecting was to meet and fall for a charming, handsome Indian called Sam when they encounter each other by chance. When it comes time to fly home Trina is torn to shreds knowing she has to leave Sam behind and not knowing when she will get to see him again. But instead of time apart making the heart grow fonder, Trina’s return to New York has prompted her to worry as she mulls over whether Sam really does love her or whether she is merely his meal ticket to a more prosperous life.

When she finally decides later on that he had only been in it for the green card she calls it quits and ends their ”love” affair, not having any idea of the repercussions and the psychotic nature Sam had been hiding beneath his friendly, unassuming exterior. This is very much a tale of two halves; the first an emotive love story; the second a riot of addictive and utterly thrilling incidents with a keen sense of danger. Both parts are compelling and superbly written. The characters are engaging and well developed and the author really shows just how a person can be a wolf in sheep's clothing. I must admit I didn't expect to love this as much as I did but it is the very definition of a page-turner. Many thanks to Bloodhound Books for an ARC

Trina Holmgard is vacationing in India when she meets Sam/Samir, who charms the socks off her feet. When she returns to America, she makes arrangements for him to enter her country. Afraid that she will not keep her part of the bargain, she leaves him a highly valuable family heirloom.

But once back on American soil, Trina begins to question her judgment. Does Sam really love her .. or is it just a Visa he's after? After many sleepless nights, she decides that Sam only wanted a way to get out of India. Trina them cuts off all contact and eventually marries another man.

Driven by rage when he realizes his dreams have been shattered, Sam dedicates his life to getting revenge. But, how far will he go? What consequences will be had by all?

Well written, there were parts of this book that literally took my breath away. For every action, there is a reaction. And this was a doozie. There is much credibility to the story ...especially as it is based on a true story. The author has done a tremendous job weaving fact and fiction into a gripping story.

Many thanks to the author / Bloodhound Books for the digital copy of MY FIRST HUSBAND. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

"The FIRST Husband" was the FIRST McGarvey Black book that has earned a thumbs down..

There were 2751 United States citizens killed in the horrific September 11th attacks.  This being said, I truly believe that historical fiction should NOT be trivializing the 9/11 attacks in any way, shape or form.  SPOILER ALERT:  The premise of this book suggests that the 911 attack/tragedy was the result of a jilted Indian lover's revenge.  (Huh?)  GIMME A BREAK.

This book had a slow beginning and a very, very, very, very unrealistic middle and ending.   The book's plot had more holes than an extra large chunk of Swiss cheese -- and I am being kind.

A jilted lover's desire to seek revenge had great potential for a compelling psychological thriller.  Not quite sure why the author wanted to link this premise to the 911 attacks.

UGH!!!!!    Soooooo disappointed.

SPOILER... SPOILER...SPOILER...SPOILER...SPOILER
DON'T READ IF YOU DON'T WANT IT TO BE SPOILED
FAIR WARNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It was a decent read until we get to the crux of the revenge. To say that I was shocked would be an understatement. But it wasn't shock in a good way. At about 65% we learn that Sam's way to get revenge on Trina is to kill her husband who works in the World Trade Center. Using 911 as a plot device in a jilted love story was NOT a good idea. Immediately, I got a bad taste as I continued to read. Fair warning. If I'd known this ahead of time I wouldn't have read.

This is my second read by this author. I loved the first read I Never Left so I couldn’t wait to read this story. I wasn’t disappointed as this is another great read. The storyline was unique which I crave for. I tried so hard to guess what way the story was gonna go but I was wasting my time. This was one of those stories that had me on the edge of my seat. So so good.

Nope, just nope! what a mess of a book. Starts out like a romance, then at around the sixty percent mark Sam's big plan for revenge is revealed and I almost threw my Kindle across the room! I find it really distasteful to insert an incredibly devastating event into the story and label the book a "psychological thriller" for fans for KL Slater. If you want to write about that event, then put in the research, do it justice ,and categorize it as historical non-fiction. Plus the entire ending was rushed and poorly written. This left a bad taste in my mouth! Very misleading blurb and cover!!

Should not have used 9/11!!!

I really enjoyed this book until you took one of the most horrible days in American history and turned it into a book on a jilted lover's revenge! Not cool, not right!

This was so bad that it was good. I saw some reviews with spoilers and knew I had to see how this played out immediately lol

It is really hard to seriously stomach 9/11 as a romantic suspense event but people take a lot of liberties with WW2 historical fiction. I think this feels worse because we saw 9/11.

I'm unsure how I really feel about that but I put it aside. The writing is quite cheesy and immature. The main characters are both completely selfish idiots who lack even the commonest sense. Yet I couldn't stop reading it.

I was constantly screaming/laughing inside thinking "no way, the author is not doing this.. it's too ridiculous"

If you're interested in good 9/11 fiction with amazing writing that will rip your heart out, check out Paper Planes by Tabitha Forney. It's one of the best books I've ever read.

Unbelievable

I’m not sure what was going through the writer’s head when she wrote this, as it a tale of unrequited love turned into committing one of the most terrible terrorist acts in history. The backstory of why Sam is driven to mass destruction is weak. He meets Trina in India and they fall in love and she fills his mind with hopes of a new life in America. Then she dashes them when she thinks his only interest in her is her passport. Her evidence is his letters which focus on the new life he hopes to live in the land of hope. Rewind to the earlier part of the book where the reader first meets Sam, and he clearly tells Trina how he is an avid reader and learns all he has through books and the tourist trade. His photographic memory absorbs everything he learns. This is where it starts to become unrealistic, because Sam’s natural thirst for knowledge would of course tumble out in his letters. As a high flyer herself, you would expect Trina to see Sam as an intellectual who would thoroughly research a place he plans to emigrate to, as well as his business plans. How is this interpreted as ‘only interested in her passport?’ This is the premise the story bases all the unfortunate events. I laughed out loud at all the Al Qaida and Osama Bin Ladin references.
I read this only because I didn’t pay for it.

I’ve never rated a book this low before but I had to. The plot is so unbelievable.

The necklace serves no purpose. Not sure why we had the backstory of the necklace either.

The descriptions of India are very archaic and problematic.

Halfway through I wondered if 9/11 would come into but not like this. Completely ludicrous. Didn’t feel anything for any of the characters other than maybe Drew when the plane hit the tower.

The author has chosen a few tricky subjects and hasn’t done a very good job with them at all.

I really do not recommend.

The book was readable and would have been enjoyable if it hadn’t included the 9/11 tragedy as it’s main feature . I agree with the other reviews that say that this book trivialises the tragedy. 9/11 was not a work of fiction and should not be made into one. 😕

How dare you...!!!

I am so outraged. The review stated the consequences would be devastating but I never in my wildest dreams expected some two bit book to base its synopsis, and excuse my spoiler as if it puts someone off reading this then it is worth it, on 9/11. To write about a inconsequential love affair, from which we don’t even know how strong his feelings were towards her, to bringing down the towers was in such bad taste...!!! No more to say.... don’t bother with this book. It is so wrong!

I DESPISED THIS BOOK!! . I started off hating that this book seems to be written by a 5th grader. But when I realized this was a fictional story about 911 I was so upset and disgusted. This author should be ashamed of disrespecting all involved in 911. DONT BUY this book. Awful

This is listed as a psychological thriller. It starts off almost Mills and Boon, and then becomes very dark. It just didn't feel that the story line, dialogue and characters were in balance.

Utterly implausible plot...

I got halfway through this book thinking ... it's not too bad, it's readable , and I began to invest in the main characters. Psychotic husband tracks down the wife who betrayed him seemed an interesting ideas. My imagination will take me so far but this is ludicrous . A poor Indian guy living on a houseboat becomes a pilot due to his brother's contacts. A woman who edits GQ and therefore enmeshed in the media world ... and yet there are no photos of her??? Ok ... But the following paragraph is what finally tipped the balance -
" Then, he heard about a powerful and dangerous man with endless resources, who operated in the shadowy world of black-market arms and other assorted criminal activities. He heard this man, while extremely elusive and difficult to reach, was looking for new innovative projects to invest in. Someone Sam met, knew people who said they might be able to get him in touch with this power broker. From what Sam had learned, the arms dealer might be open to an extraordinary idea. Sam’s plan was indeed that, but would require a lot of money and would be difficult to pull off. However, if it were executed properly, all the time and money would be worth it"
Really?? Such a lazy way to develop plot with this all of a sudden scenario. "Then" ... there's no build up, there's nothing. Just a random idea thrown into the scenario. I genuinely feel insulted that a writer could be so dismissive of the reader or that an editor could actually allowed guff to be published. For twists to work there has to be an element of reality .Readers aren't completely stupid.
Life is too short to read rubbish.
Give this a wide berth

There is so much more I want to say about this story, I'm bursting at the seams to say more but don't want to give away any spoilers. The story starts off with Trina and her friend travelling to India for a holiday of a lifetime. They meet Sam and Trina falls head over heels in love with him. She is totally heartbroken when she needs to go back home. When she returns home she begins to wonder if he really does love her or is she his ticket for a new life in America. She goes back to India a few months later and marries the love of her life.

Trina finally decides she's being used and cuts all ties with Sam and this is where the story really kicks off!!!!!!! I got to a certain part of the book and the penny dropped!!!!! I realised where it was going and I was gobsmacked, the hairs on the back of my neck stood up and I got chills down my spine. You may think this is a love story and yes, to begin with it is but it's a psychological thriller at its best. Amazingly brilliant book you must read in my opinion.

Nobody wins
The third book I've read by this author and, if I'm honest, I thought the first two were better but the bar was set remarkably high with those. That's not to say this book isn't a great read; it's a solid 4.5 stars, it's just very different and my preference lay with the others. This book takes a long time in laying out the foundational plot, much of which is romance and therefore it lacks the intrigue you might expect of a whodunit, as the last books were. Yet it was never short on pace so never felt boring or slow, especially with the light and airy writing style. However, not much is revealed for a significant portion of the book and it left me wondering where it was all heading, although the suggestion was always there of something huge coming on the next page. When it finally does come together the psychological elements blend with well known historical events that provide for an engrossing, if somewhat sad read.
This is a talented author that I can't get enough of and can confidently recommended this book.

Disgusting! I wish I could give zero

When I started this book, I had no idea that the auth would use the tragedy of 9/11 to sell books. I am shocked that anyone would do that. As the wife of a New York City Fire Officer who spent count,East hours recovering bodies and body parts from the WTC, and then got sick from it, I am thoroughly disgusted and will never read a book by this author again. Shane on her!

Not a good choice

911 was a day that left America broken. While we put it all back together again reading a book how it all came down to a scammer getting revenge is sickening.

This was ludicrous and to tie 9/11 into the story was a cheap ploy. Tying the deaths of thousands into a relationship that went south was in really bad taste. I hated it.

This was a clever story about lies and revenge and even though some bits were somewhat non-credible it held my attention from the start. What I liked most of all was the speed with which this story moved. It begins with two American girls Jenn and Trina travelling to Kashmir in India where Trina falls in love with Sam, an uneducated Indian man who manages his parent's Houseboat business. What he lacks in education he makes up for in street cred. Trina has a sexual relationship with him and leaves her grandmother's locket with him as a sign that she promises she'll return to him. When she returns to New York she commences communicating with him but realises that his communication rarely mentions their relationship but concentrates instead on what he will do when he marries her and gets to New York. She writes requesting that he return her locket and he responds by saying that they made a promise to only return it to her when they are wed.
She is so obsessed with the locket that she travels back to India and goes through a marriage ceremony in order to retrieve the locket. Immediately after the ceremony, she heads home and promptly forgets about him assuming that he will never be any the wiser if she continues with her life as she climbs the corporate ladder of publishing. She ignores his letters and a few years later meets and marries an Australian.
Sam in the meanwhile moves to Egypt and then Germany where he works in aviation and trains as a pilot. He continually sends somewhat cryptic and threatening letters to Trina anonymously who he traces through the internet. He connects with Al Qaeda and the rest is history culminating in 9/11. Revenge is sweet, Karma is a bitch and all such good things come to the fore when Trina and sadly her family pay for her deception and lies.

I did think Trina rather naive for a New Yorker and her attachment to the locket actually silly which lost the book a star. 4 Stars.

This was my first book by McGarvey Black. It was well written, but this story was just not for me. I'm not going to explain why because I can't without spoiling it for others, and I'm definitely in the minority. However, I'm going to try one of her other books because I know the author's talented.
