Anthem of Infinity #2

First Song, Book Two

Rate this book
The entire world has changed, and Noah has changed with it. A year after the Shift, the plans he’d laid, caches he’d hidden, and infrastructure he’d put in place have saved millions, but the world’s death toll has still been astronomical. Now he continues his struggle to protect the people he cares about and to atone for his past weakness. Journeying with his elite group, the Merriweathers, Noah has been patrolling the eastern United States. He has been helping new communities rebuild from the ashes of civilization, but his true goal has always been a search for Humanity’s enemies, the Aelves. But when Noah finally hears new rumors about his old foes, what he will encounter will be beyond anything he could have imagined. Ghosts from the past will return and new discoveries will create more questions. Noah will learn that the post-Shift world can be even more dangerous than anything he had planned for. There might be something out there even worse than the Aelves.

Unsatisfactory sequel

After a great star in book 1, I was disappointed with certain turns in book 2. It was great to return to Noah’s world, revisit some great characters and just see how it would differ from the first shift. However, imho, the authors felt the need to add some serious depth that, again imho, the story did not need. The plot was complex and satisfactory enough for a YA hybrid like the Anthem of Infinity. Now it feels like they want to upgrade it to something else, and unfortunately it does not flow as natural or authentic as Book 1.

Anyway. It was enjoyable with familiar characters. Awesome new characters, powers and wb. But the backstory/side story/understory? feels too bloated only for the purpose of connecting the new added lines.

Now that the ‘damage’ is done I will wait, with a little less enthusiasm, for the Book 3. Hopefully now that the terrain is set it won’t be as shaky. This really feels more like a Book 1 than 2.

I really like both authors and I can’t wait for new books from their respective ongoing series.

Didn’t quite live up to expectations.

Still a great book, the second in the series went in a completely different direction than expected. This isn’t always a bad thing but it didn’t feel like it was naturally done, the flow felt off. I like the new direction it just seems to really clash with what was introduced in the first book.

Side POVs aren’t my favorite but these ones add to the overall story and introduce a lot of world building to the setting. The romance bits are both comical and stressing, hopefully it gets settled out next book.

I could very well see this series ending in the next book or two and should prove to be a very good series. Very much looking forward to them.

Probably my favorite story by either author

I've been waiting quite a bit of time to read the second installment in this series and it's finally here. The story pivots from the end of the first book into an unexpected but logical path that is really captivating in the overall arc of the world being built.

I highly recommend this series.

Back to this YA book. I hope there isn't any blushing school girls or love triangles.

This book has so many good concepts, and a good plot but somehow, the author(s) are making me think it's for Young Adults (and it is). I can't take this serious when the girl that dumped him is looking for a way back in. And he (the protagonist) is thinking that "he owes her an answer".
She didn't add anything . If I'm recalling book one correctly.

I don't have patience for these Young Adult relationship games. You let the fish go, now you're crying over not having the fish when you see how big it got. Now you feel the fish owes you and explanation on how it got so huge and where it found food (I think this is an apt analogue).

I really wanted to like this book, I really tried, but by the end I couldn't take it anymore. It took me six days to finish this, I could have done it in three, but for three days I found other things to do instead of reading, and I only had a few chapters remaining.

Some how this is rubbing me the wrong way, and I'm dropping the series here.

Why?

I might go back and pick up this book up eventually.
You built this gritty world and have the Mc grow to be a team player. Why the heck did you have him try to fight a whole group of Aelves at around 30% Why!? Did he not lose a friend from facing off just scouts?! RIP Johnny oh wait one the key lessons Noah learned from his death was forgotten whoopsie!

Maybe his Aelve counterpart letting him go has plot meaning, but the same exact thing could have occurred were the exchange made right when Aelve leader lady finds Noah rendezvous with his soldiers.
Ugh I bet this sort of thing will happen more often through out the book, especially if the opponents are zombies. I suppose his Aelve counterpart let him go because him dying would mean losing power too and or losing the chance to steel the other half of orb power from Noah.

Whelp I might eventually read the rest since it’s much better than the usual schlock I read but dang what a let down. I suppose I expected too much.

I loved the first book, but this one is such a disappointment. It's still well written and interesting, but the plot goes off the rails around 33% through. I made it to about 45% and just gave up.

If you have KU and enjoyed the first, you should at least give it a try and see how you feel about it at that point.

Awful.

Repetitively repeatedly repeated character motivation is quite a chore to read. There's three pages of brooding and/or repetitious character motivation between every sentence of dialogue. 99% of it could be removed without any loss in plot or narrative.

There's an interesting story in there somewhere but the construction and fluff chokes it to death almost right away.

This book sucks.

Disappointing

I was so excited when the 2nd book came out only to be let down. Some sorta not really spoiler ahead, mostly I just hated the direction they’re going with the whole well you now have to be best friends with these aliens you hate good luck

I'm going to start off by saying I liked this book, I enjoyed this book, but not for the reasons I liked the first one. Now that I have that out of the way The book starts with a time skip, I hate time skips and in my opinion it hurt the story to hear a bunch of interesting stuff happened over the last year but not to get to actually hear it. Next the author said the actual story was done a year ago but they put it aside then went back to it a year later and added a bunch of tropes. I'm not sure what tropes were added exactly but the direction the story goes in this book feels completely different to the direction it was going in the first book and while a good story I feel like the direction of this book while not hurting itself hurts the first book. Lastly the announcement at the end that there will only be one more book in this series hurts both books because it takes away growth potential and limits the story. All of that being said I am still giving the book 5 stars. Aside from the main character it has pretty decent character development but after believing he is twice as old as he is due to living two lives were expected to believe the main character is oblivious to the feelings of the people (especially women) around him, honestly that makes little sense. There is very little world building or actual management in this one unlike the first one which had a lot of planning. The combat is interesting and there are some interesting twists in the story that I can't tell if they were intended when the first book was written. Overall I really like the book and recommend it but while I never would have done this with the first book I can't help but compare the series to Seeds of Chaos by Azalea Ellis but I can't explain why without spoiling both books. Some of the story / plot choices / tropes in this one are very similar to ones used in the follow up books in that series just at a different pace. I really want to explain it and see if anyone else who has read both sees it or if it's just me but I hate spoilers. Anyways I liked this book, I liked that book and I recommend them both. Sorry for the poorly written review but it's hard for me to review this without spoiling it and I tried my best.

Alert

I hate trying to write reviews because there are really only pass/fail results for me. Did I make it all the way through? Yes? 5 stars. No? There would be nothing here to read. In all fairness, if an author holds my attention from page one to the end, they’ve done their job. Anything less than 5 stars is petty criticism from someone incapable of even doing the job let alone doing a better one.

So in respect for the author and their work, I am going to start pasting this along with a generic review I found somewhere. “This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.”

Now, since I have to keep explaining myself to people who don't like my reviews, I guess some clarification is in order.

1. I am 100% against criticism for works of art. Art is subjective, meaning reviews are irrelevant. The observer's opinion is only relevant to the observer. It is my belief that regardless of what others might say, I have to experience the art for myself.

2. I read upwards of 20 books a month. The $10/month I spend on K U, feels like I am cheating the authors. But since I can't afford 20 books a month if I were to purchase them directly, all I can offer is a positive review. That leads us to the final point.

3. If I get to the end of a book, then it was worth my time. I give those books 5 stars because it helps the author get exposure. That is the only reason I write reviews at all.

I understand that people are people and they are going to do what they do regardless of my stance. I know the way that I review books upsets some people. I am sorry they feel that way but as many have said, they will just ignore my review going forward. In fact, if you made it this far through my review, you should definitely read the book and completely ignore all of the reviews here. You are a much better judge of what you will like than anyone here.

Cheers

I loved the first book in the series, but this one lacks both cohesion and inspiration.

First, I have to say I really don’t like the authors’ decision to skip the entire first year of the Shift. Establishing a safe haven was a huge part of what Noah was working towards in the first book and now *poof* instant Fortress hometown and nation wide Log Cabin network. I can understand they wanted to advance the story with the Aelves, but this decision just feels like hitting the easy button and disconnects Noah’s development between books. We also go from just discovering magic to having several new “game” abilities, all with zero updates on skills or anything like a character sheet.

A bigger issue though is how Noah’s character has changed. His insightful inner dialogue and intelligent leadership have largely been replaced by self righteous anger and impulsive decision making. Also, while Noah in book one was prepared to kill just to stay free, he’s now reluctant to even take down evil scumbags. Noah’s intriguing growth arc appears to have been dropped for something simpler, perhaps to better appeal to an angsty teen crowd.

The real nail in the coffin though is how poorly this book is written. Maybe a different author was in charge of the writing. Maybe there was a new editor involved, or not much editing at all. Either way, the result is a disappointing hodgepodge of crammed in ideas and awkward sentences. There’s also an annoying habit of stating the obvious and repeating things, like readers need to be helped through the story. All in all, the changes come off as very Young Adult and amateur.

I want to be clear, I am a big fan of the first book and gave it a five star rating. I was so excited for this one that I reread the first so I could jump right in with everything fresh in my mind. Ironically, that may have highlighted all the issues even more. I almost can’t believe this was written by the same authors. It’s a real shame and I think I’m done with the series.

Interesting but flawed

This book isn't fast paced or totally on point. Neither was book 1 but in it the pacing was better and characters made more sense.

Here about 1/2 way a past romance and others start up. Not sickeningly so, but Noah (mc) isn't the brightest here. Dude became the biggest billionaire and richest set dozens of nations rallying point and runs from a little feelings? Just so crushing breaks continuity.

Overall the shift having occurred in book one continues some months to a year after the first book.

People meet up and the Aelves are doing their things. Noah swings from staggering competent to utterly idiotic. Unless something catches my eye in book 3 this may be my ending.

2 of 3

Not quite as good as First Song 1 but still worthy of 5 stars. Noah still has issues with his inability to accept help and praise. We meet Cassie who is much like Noah but more in some ways. Kahlek is much stronger and more confident. These three have all experienced the first shift but in different ways. Noah is caught off guard by an earlier shift than the first one but his plans fall into place well and he adapts quickly. There are problems in this shift that didn’t exist in the first shift though but Noah overcomes and increases his powers. We are left with a cliffhanger as usual and it’s good to know that book three will complete the story.

What a fun ride!

I waited on reading this in order to re read the first book, and it was worth it. The authors do a good job to keep the storytelling well enough without context from the first book - but I greatly enjoyed how well book one flows into book 2, felt seamless.

What else was seamless was how well the characters grew over the course of this story. More development and interesting character interactions lead to a more nuanced story that kept me well engaged.

Looking forward to book 3!

Excellent

This book was a lot better than the first one... But for some strange reason I also found it it a little frustrating to read. There were definite highs and lows in the story for me, compared to the first book. This book was a lot darker, which I didn’t like. I don’t like when there is so much obstacles in the way of the MC and his companions but the I must add that there were little kernels of fun and light added that made it worth while. And the ending opens up a whole new can of worms for the next book.

I liked this story well enough, it's just that at points, the story seemed to drag on and on, where it really didn't need to do so. Don't know if this was a result of packing in too much information, bad writing, or the author's intent to give as much information as possible. It just seems to me, the book could have been condensed to something like 75-80 percent of it's length without loosing anything. Otherwise, I had no issues with the story as a whole, and I think most LitRPG fans will like it.

A long time in coming

I'm glad it finally showed up, for a while I wasn't sure it was going to. I also wasn't sure I was going to finish it because of the different perspective changes.

Either that or all the distractions from her life prevent preventing me from actually getting into the book like I did the first one.

Well I did get through it, I can't wait to get to the spoilers section for corvins discord group. Cuz I got some questions I feel a need to answer

Great but long wait

Great book. Good follow up but the wait was long and it left me digging at some prior details from the first book. That said the world or story arc is definitely taking a major turn. New players and powers are ante up. I like the progression but wonder if there will be any more orb wielders. Going forward there seems to be a lot of new developments and I hope more powers. Looking forward to the next book and hope the wait is a lot shorter.

Good book. You should read it too!

The second outing of the series has a lot going for it. It builds well off the previous book, and there's a groaner in there early on, but the plot twist makes it bearable. The story picks up in the second half of the book in my opinion. With what the authors have built up so far there's room to go in a few different directions. I'm curious to see what other insanity they'll cook up.

An excellent continuation of a well started story

This book is better than the first, minus a couple of typos, it is structured better and has more plot packed in.
It could be expanded on but the parts not told leave plenty of space for future work or others to add to the story.
Looking forward to the next book.

Fantastic story

I was a little worried with the preface you put out. Specifically the mixing of genres. But I have to say it was a perfect mix and the story flowed. I really enjoyed the MC and back up Characters. The death scene was very moving. Both authors did fantastic work. Keep them coming. (Sooner if possible).

Good tale

Good story, interesting world building and I am curious what the next book will bring.
The MC is a bit slow, and his growth is haphazard. Hopefully they will let him mature relationships wise soon. It is becoming a drawback and if no growth in the next book it will be a breaker.

Middle book setting up book 3

Starts OK, loses its way midway through, but ends strong again. It’s worth a read. The middle introduces new elements and the MC gets boring for a while, but luckily it’s short lived and interesting characters join up that I look forward to read in the next book.

Good, but needs more editing

Not sure how I feel about the added zombie genre, but overall still a fun story. It could really use one more editing pass though. Lots of missed words, or incomplete edits. Places where a word was changed but they forgot to delete the old word, not many, but lots of little ones that are up.

Lots of new plot twists.

Ok the book was well written. Overall it was good but I thought that the story has gotten very cluttered with different story arcs in a short time. This book introduced so many new questions that it left me just asking what's going on instead of enjoying the story.

The zombie element being levered in is ok

I mean, they clearly spent a lot of time putting it in there and trying to smooth the plot, but it still seems evidence to me the original book was going a different direction. Otherwise, good book, good twists, good outside take on the genre

Entertaining and creative

Good follow up to the first book. Story development is solid. Character development is solid. A different read than other in the genre. In a good way. I have recently gotten into the LITRPG Realm and have enjoyed the stories and world building but this book is a little different blending traditional sci-fi and fantasy with game me

The first third left me uninspired but things eventually became interesting and there was a strong finish.

If the author throws in any more ingredients it may become farcical. But if you like apocalyptic sci-fi, with time travel, aliens, zombies, and superheroes, then this book is for you.

A great continuation

This was a great continuation to the first book. It has the action, world building, and character development. Answers a lot of questions as creates plenty more. I can't wait until the next installment.

Great Book

Interesting series. Lots of twists. Internally consistent. Lots of lore. Lots of worldbuilding. My favorite line from the end. “I know you’re a bard, but I didn’t think you were a bard-bard.”
