We have seen how Bianca gained her Rook position, and now we concentrate on Nyro’s accession. While Bianca followed the ‘normal’ approach of beating the other quadrant’s First Pawn,Yessenia, Nyro’s advance was quite unusual, and goes against the spirit of the Board rules. While Bianca and Nyro are both feared by their respective colleagues, Bianca invokes fear due to her prowess and ruthlessness, whereas picking on Nyro risks the far more immediate and potentially fatal jeopardy of the King’s displeasure.
Bianca wants (needs) to move up the ranks as quickly as possible. Nyro’s sole aim is to free his brother and any advance in rank is unplanned for, and often unwelcome. Despite his attraction to Bianca, Nyro realises:
Bianca was on a different path than mine. I couldn’t save her. She wanted this. All she cared about was revenge, and maybe that was all she really had. For my part, I had Timotei
Nyro tries desperately to hang on to his humanity, and not to give way to the evil of the King’s blood inside him, and so not to give the King any satisfaction:
“I thought I had seen a glimpse of the real Maximus in the beginning, that night I tried to escape with Timotei. He’d seemed intent on proving I was no better than him, on showing me that, with vampire blood in my veins, I would be a monster, too. Of course, he had been right.”
““Embrace the power because, whether or not you want it,” (the King) added, “it will embrace you.””
A surprise meeting with one of the King’s siblings reveals that since childhood the King has always had – and discarded – his favourites. His favour can vanish on a whim. That information puts Nyro on a warning, but also the fates of Timotei and Talyssa.
Nyro despises the King and all he stands for. He does not want to find anything positive about his enemy, and yet:
(the King) “sighed heavily and sat up, glancing at Talyssa for a moment. … He smiled fondly at her, and the gesture left me feeling conflicted. He couldn’t possibly care for her, not in a natural way. His fondness was for her blood”
Likewise, Timotei seems almost happy to be doted on by the King. After all, Timotei is very young, and until now has only known poverty and a hand to mouth existence with many restrictions on his movements for his own safety (which he repeatedly ignored). Now he is a favourite of the King, with everything he ever dreamed of. Would he really thank Nyro for ‘rescuing’ him? It is always worrying how many abused come to ‘love’ – or at least excuse/accept the actions of – their abusers, and how many abusers claim to ‘love’ their victims.
I continue to really enjoy this series, though now I am finding myself increasingly drawn to the Nyro threads. I find his personality the more complex and interesting. His focus is always outside of his own needs, whereas Bianca tries to supress all extraneous emotion in her single-minded pursuit of revenge.
The epic – and completely unexpected – ending of this novella prepares the ground for Nyro’s and Bianca’s rises to knighthood. I can barely wait for the next instalments.

Pardoned? The word echoed in my mind until it’s meaning registered. The king had stolen my death. He wasn’t done toying with me. - Nyro

With Rook Sanda dead at the hands of Rook Datcu, Nyro must fight the Second Quandrant’s First Pawn Skullflare, to become a Rook. If he loses he’s dead and if he wins, he must drink vampire blood. Nyro decides he’d rather die than become a monster and deliberately loses. Incensed, Maximus intervenes by pressuring Skullflare to pardon him at the moment of death and later feeds Nyro his blood to heal him.

Nyro is enraged when he wakes up with the after effects of vampire blood in his system. Having broken his own sacred rules of the Board, Maximus initially has Nyro locked away until he can remove Skullflare from the equation. When Nyro is promoted to Rook, the Quadrants are resentful but too fearful of Maximus to object. Maximus reveals his motives to Nyro, “I have kept you alive because I have a task for you. Something I want you to steal for me.”

It transpires that the item is in the White Palace no less and the reward for retrieving it is Timotei’s freedom. Nyro readily agrees. An ominous warning from Bishop Dragoslav, however, fills him with foreboding, “He is toying with you. You aren’t the first and won’t be the last. He’ll tire of you. Especially when you fail his task.”

When the White Queen throws a ball in celebration of acquiring a new Trove, Nyro’s plan to infiltrate the White Palace and steal the item backfires spectacularly...

Black Knight is the sixth instalment of the Vampire Court series and what an exhilarating ride it was. From the offset, I found myself totally immersed in what has been the most tense, gripping and complex instalment of the series so far. Nyro really goes through the wringer in this one as he fights to retain his humanity. His first meeting with Bianca following his change was intriguing. It’s becoming increasingly clear that Nyro and Bianca’s paths are leading them further apart. This is evident when Nyro lies to her about Talyssa and omits to tell her of the King’s task in return for Timotei’s freedom. Bianca’s sole focus is on revenge and she is willing to do what she must to obtain that - even at the risk to her humanity.

I find myself increasingly fascinated with the multi faceted aspects of King Maximus. He is cruel and ruthless but there are moments when you see a softer side to him. His treatment of Timotei and Talyssa just one example. I was completely blown away by Bishop Dragoslav’s jaw dropping revelation. I can’t wait for more of Maximus’ past to be revealed. How he came to be the Black King. Was his story similar to Bianca’s perhaps? What can he possibly want with the Queen’s sceptre?

All in all, Black Knight was a tense, well executed and thoroughly entertaining instalment in what is turning out to be a memorable series. It’s gong to be a long wait for White Bishop!

The adventure continues in this installment of the Vampire Court series! I'm so curious as to how Nyro's story will continue to unfold when he continues sacrificing so much! In "Black Knight," Nyro discovers that the King definitely has a purpose for him when he is made Rook. But what can it be? Will he have to give up his romance with Bianca?

I’m glad I didn’t give up on this series. It’s really picking up. I’m curious to see what the King has planned and whether Nyro will be able to do what is asked of him. The way it ends, I’m dying to know what’s going to happen to Bianca.

Bishop Dragoslav is King Maximus's sister. That seems so convenient and suspicious.

For Nyro, death seems to be a better choice than drinking the King's blood and being turned into a monster. Yet signing for the Board, his choices were given away. In his desperate attempt to save his brother, he surrendered to the whims of king Maximus and his minions. Even the choice of living or dying was taken from him, being forced to change into something he hates. But becoming the king's toy might have certain advantages, and if Nyro wants to save his brother and protect his own humanity, he needs to play his hand smartly.
If I am intrigued by the White Court, the Black Court holds even more appeal to me. Driven by different motives than his white counterpart Bianca, Nyro makes his choices with pure and loving heart, thinking of Timotei first. Haunted by guilt and hopelessness, he has to make peace with his new reality if he wants to achieve what he had set up for himself. This game is dangerous, and one wrong step may lead to losses on lives. Pushed to his limits, Nyro shows his strength and qualities and balances the evil of the Black Court with his warm heart. Yet the game is not over, and if he wants to survive, he would have to play well..

Another great. Nyro is not happy with the choices he has to make. He’s definitely a strong character and can make the right choices. Short but amazing.

Neyro’s life continues to have his life manipulated by the Black king who’s devious plans are still to be uncovered. It’s very much like a cat and mouse game, as the king manoeuvres the pieces on the board to get what he wants, but Neyro is the one to pay the price of his cruel and heartless actions. Neyro is devastated to learn of his forced fate and even more so to learn Bianca took that step willingly. Their romance looks to go from passionate to cold in one realising moment. But then he is whiplashed by her actions as she puts her future on the line for him. The only good thing if you can call it that is that Neyro gets to see more of Timotei however that could also be perceived as another punishment. The Kings next step is to charge him with an impossible task. One he once again has no choice in making. The king is playing this game with skill, will Neyro move a square or be wiped off the board. I am loving this series, the intrigue is addictive and my world changes once I’m amongst its pages. This is book.6. In the series and I wait in anticipation at the end of every book biting my lip and curling my toes

In Black Knight we get to see the events of White Knight from Nyro’s perspective. We learn of his ascent to become a Rook and more about the evil of King Maximus. Not everything is as it appears...

This is another great instalment in the Vampire Court series! I loved it! It shows again how none of the characters are perfect and each have their own motives for their actions. I really liked that we got to see a bit more of Timotei in this book! There is plenty of suspense and a cliffhanger ending that has left me breathless for the next book!

I received an ARC from the author and I’m voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Love this series!

King Maximus challenges Nyro to steal Queen Lovina’s scepter. He must not fail or the king may do something horrible to his little brother. Nyro is torn between his feelings for Bianca and saving his little brother, Timotei, from the king. As Nyro attends a ball in Queen Lovina’s castle, he tries to find the scepter. A huge plot twist you never saw coming, saves Nyro from discovery and makes a great escape. Now what will happen? I couldn’t even begin to imagine what Ms Seymour has up her sleeve in the next book in this series. Much more court intrigue of that I am certain. Love this series!

OMG Nyro what happened? We have suspence, action heartache. Nyro does not want to become a Knight and drink the King's blood. He is in a fight and prepared to die. He wants to save his brother, but he does not want to become a vampire. What will happen? What game is the King playing with him? What will Bianca do when she finds out? Can he do what the king wants? What about protecting the troves? What is really going on? Why so many secrets? I recieved a free copy for my honest review.

This one is defintely my favourite in the series so far. This one is even more complex than the others. I loved seeing Nyro's struggle with his humanity and also in what he can actually tell Bianca. Beautifully constructed and crafted, as ever this is pure pleasure to read. I'm on tenterhooks now waiting for more!

Nyro is back and what a great story. Suspense and secrets are revealed that I cannot wait to see how they tie into what will be coming. It’s always amazing to see what happens to Nyro as he has the most to lose. Loved the ending and cannot wait to see what happens next. Loved the twist at the end. I just get caught in this series and sucked in and this one was no exception.
