Rate this book
Ever since eleven-year-old Dexter Duckworth and his brother, Dougal, lost their mom, everything has been different. But “different” takes on a whole new meaning when, one day just before Christmas (or Kissmas, as they call it), Dexter finds a golden rock in the forest that hatches into an adorable alien. Gobbledy is smarter than he seems and is lost on planet Earth. Before long, Gobbledy takes Dexter, Dougal, and their best friend Fi on an adventure of friendship, family, and loss—one that requires them all to stay out of trouble, protect Gobbledy from a shadowy group called the Planetary Society, and prepare for their school’s Winter Extravaganza Play, where Dexter has to be a dreaded Gingerbread Man.

Gobbledy is a fun-filled holiday story that adds up to two brothers, three friends, unlimited jars of peanut butter, a ketchup factory, and one little alien far, far from home.

A heartwarming story full of love and enchantment. We follow our eleven year old protagonist Dexter Duckworth and his younger brother Dougal who is struggling as a family coping with the loss of their mom's passing. As Dexter and his friend Fi (Fiona) are on their usual outdoor adventures at a forest, he stumbles upon a golden rock which hatches into an adorable alien whom they name Gobbledy. It is up to Dexter, Dougal and Fi to research and retrieve more background information on Gobbledy's identity and assist in sending him back home where he belongs.

This story had a perfect blend of comedy and resonating in-depth themes. Lis Anna-Langston's wonderful writing reflects her forte in magical storytelling. This book deals with serious issues of loss and grief and the author beautifully interweaves these elements through strong articulation and simplification in a delicate manner and respect that would be easily translated toward young readers. I really admired Dexter's characterization in this story. His character was the most intriguing in the sense where his multi-layered characterization has the most room for growth. Dexter is flawed and known as the troublemaker in the family but as we slowly peel these layers his inquisitive, caring and courageous side shines and make him one of the most admirable. Filled with strong and vivid characterizations with an essential message of love and the hilarious and absurd adventures of an alien and three friends is the perfect cozy holiday read. Looking forward to continuing this uplifting series.

Thank you to BookSirens and the author in providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Gobbledy is an enchanting middle grade novel which does not mince words while referring to grief of a lost loved one especially during a festival. But don’t worry it is not all filled with melancholy and gloom. Quite the opposite actually, the book tells an adventurous tale of three children and an alien who gobbled up everything. Right about now, the title should start making sense. I adore children’s books for the reason that it makes Complex things like loss, grief, sadness, loneliness very simplified so that children can not only relate but also understand what it is. As we grow up, these things also become weight on our shoulders. Well, it is Christmas time and Dexter, Douglas and Fi have just found an alien. In any other genre, this would be a nightmare. But a little friendly alien does distract you from the real life long enough for an adventure.

I love the descriptions in the book. They were really vivid and would surely help children imagine everything that the was being narrated. Among all the children, I just loved Fi the most and Gobbledy, second. It is a fun book to read. It is so light hearted that once you’re done with it, you just want to go back to the first page and read all over again.

When you want to have fun, the hijinks of this book is one that's entertaining for an adult crowd reading it or for the audience it's intended for. It's literally the best kind of fun middle grade that is scattered among the books about hard-hitting issues.

Yet, Anna-Langston does also fold in the seriousness of losing a mother and the sadness that might come from celebrating the holidays with one less family member. The gentleness of including it is juxtaposed with the fun and levity of finding an alien-like funny, goofy creature when out in the woods and keeping him hidden from your dad.

It's like Hilo and ET mixed with an entertaining holiday movie and the picture it my mind lit up with the silliness and craziness of the mission. It's friendship forward because only those kinds of friends would think it's just as serious to feed, protect, and hide this fun "Gobbledy". Plus, the overworked ketchup-experimenting dad is the perfect kind of parent to pull the wool over his eyes.

Dexter’s school project isn’t going to plan!

Gobbledy is utterly brilliant and I loved every word. I may be half a century older than Lis Anna-Langston’s target audience but I was completely captivated by her story-telling. This is a truly wonderful book that would appeal to any reader regardless of age because it is written with humanity and has such skilful story-telling. There are some lovely illustrations too.

The plot of Gobbledy is riveting. There’s intrigue and peril, adventure and humour, all mixed with sensitively portrayed emotions of love, friendship and grief in a story that romps along. I was totally captivated. Add in aliens, thieves, school teachers, ketchup, glowing rocks and Christmas and this is a story that deserves to become a children’s classic. I couldn’t put it down because I was desperate to know what might happen next in this dramatic and exciting story.

The characters are glorious. Poor Mr D trying to manage two boys, a precarious job and his grief over his wife, illustrates perfectly how adults can behave in ways that seems harsh but that simply reflect how much they actually care. Dougal’s sensible and logical attitude balances Dexter’s chaotic personality to perfection. So many children will be able to relate to Dexter’s ability to get into trouble unwittingly. I loved the fact that it is Fi, the main female character, who is the most technologically minded because she gives status to girls who enjoy less traditional roles. Her friendship with Dexter shows how genders can mix and care for one another without hidden agendas or being considered unusual, giving valuable messages to children as they enjoy the story.

The star of the narrative is undoubtedly Gobbledy himself. He may be alien, but he embodies such deep humanity that I wanted to reach into the pages of Gobbledy and hug him tightly.

The themes are cleverly woven into the story so that difficult concepts such as grief and truth, economics and employment, education and friendship bubble alongside the action, making for an affecting and educating read whilst entertaining flawlessly. I confess to shedding a tear as I read.

Lis Anna-Langston’s Gobbledy makes it onto my books of the year for 2020. It is absolutely fabulous and brought me complete joy. Don’t miss it.

I received this novel as an ARC and I must say I enjoyed it immensely!

This darling adventurous novel should be wrapped in red with a shiny golden bow—like the rock—and placed under every Y/A read’s Christmas tree. The writing is solid and the voice expressive. The author’s temperament comes through with memorable and specific ideas for the story’s plot. I especially liked her word choices—strong nouns and verbs to enliven the prose with phrases and sentences that are easily understood. They make the book become animated with excitement. The narrative is a fun adventure, while it also deals with difficult subjects such as grief. Not only is it a wonderful reading experience for grade schoolers, but pure entertainment for the whole family with lovely illustrations to boot!

My thoughts about the interesting characters: the protagonist Dexter, his brother Dougal, friend Fi and of course Gobbeldy—enrich the story because they are multi-faceted, going through growth and change. The scenes are complete with action, dialogue, descriptions of the forest, etc. so that the reader feels they are living the events and happenings along with these young people in this unusual tale. The scenes are appropriate for the theme and genre, many communicating turning episodes.

I must note here that ever since I was a kid, I happen to be a great fan and extremely fond of ketchup and peanut butter!

Gobbledy is a middle grade Christmas novel involving three children and an alien that will warm your heart.

At Christmas time brothers Dougal and Dexter are trying to cope with the loss of their mother until one day Dexter and his best friend Fi (Fiona) happen across a golden rock in a mysterious spot in the forest, being naturally curious children he picks up the rock and brings it home with him. From this point onwards the book is filled with the hilarious shenanigans of Dougal, Dexter, Fi and Gobbledy the alien (who is named Gobbledy because he gobbles everything up).

This is a wonderful read filled not only with fun and laughter, but also about more serious topics for children to understand about coping with the loss of a loved one (especially during a holiday season), friendship, courage and love.

I absolutely loved this book and I’ve passed it onto my god daughter to read when she gets a little bit older as it’ll help her understand some important emotions as she grows. What a wonderful book, and what absolutely tremendous writing from the author, these topics can be hard for young people to understand but the author has managed to sum them all up so beautifully in this book while simultaneously making it not a doom and gloom book.

While collecting data for a school science project, Dexter and his best friend Fiona discover a glowing rock amid electric mushroom-like thingies, that have appeared overnight in the area of the forest that Fiona is studying. Dexter picks up the rock and takes it with him, thus begins an exciting adventure in making new friends, and finding hope after loss.

Dexter at first seems to be little more than the literary-typical awkward middle-grade boy, constantly in trouble, compared to a perfect sibling, and the cause of desperation for his overwhelmed parent. Within a few pages though, he becomes very real and relatable. We find that his confidence, his world has been shattered by the loss of his mom several months prior He, along with his brother and dad, is simply trying to find his footing in this new circumstance. To make it harder, it the first Christmas without her. She was the spirit of the family, organizing, decorating, and creating traditions, like the lovely Kissmas. It all seems like so much nothing without her. Lonely and devastated, Dexter makes a wish on a falling star. Boy, does he get his wish in spades.

Dexter soon finds himself caring for a lost alien, the eponymous Gobbledy from the title, described as a cross between a prairie dog, a chinchilla, and a cartoon. With the reluctant help of his logical younger brother, Dougal, and the technical expertise of his hilariously down to earth bestie Fiona, Dexter finds out that life goes on, just in a different way, as the kids work together to keep their new friend a secret, all the while trying to protect him from outsiders, and keep Dexter from getting into the kind of trouble that just seems to find him.

This story beautifully explores the themes of loss, life changes, and loyalty, while being completely entertaining. I laughed out loud. I teared up. I sat on the edge of my seat. I cheered at the victories both small and large. This is the kind of book that once read, could spark a life-long love for reading fiction or at least a new family holiday tradition.

Any middle-grade kid is going to find something personal in the story. While excellent in both prose and length for that age reader, it will make a wonderful storytime (bedtime) read for younger kids, especially with the delightful pencil sketches that dot the book. I know a few teens that will thoroughly enjoy this as well. This story has been told, but there is a little part of me that really wishes this can be expanded to a series.

I received a copy of Gobbledy in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Guys, I have to tell you something: Gobbledy has got to be the sweetest and most endearing book I've read all year. If you're looking for a heartwarming read around the holidays, this is it.

Dexter and Dougal Duckworth have been trying their best to cope with the loss of their mother, but with the holidays coming up, that is easier said than done. That is, until Dexter finds a golden rock, which is really an alien egg.

An alien they dubbed Gobbledy. Little Gobbledy got lost on Earth, and now Dexter and Dougal are stepping up to take care of their new best friend. Even if he does eat everything in sight.

“She said that when stars die, they sometimes leave a black hole behind to remind everyone they were alive once.”

Gobbledy is a sweet and endearing holiday read. One that isn't afraid to tackle the complicated and oft painful nature of love and loss. It's refreshing to see the subject so openly discussed about here, especially given everything else going on.

This really is an enchanting middle grade novel, one that I truly wish had been available when I was that age. I'd like to believe that it would have helped me a lot, thanks to the frank conversations both children were capable of having, both with each other, and with themselves.

If I've made this sound like a somber book, that was not my intent. Gobbledy is just as funny as it is poignant. The amount of adventure (and shenanigans) Dexter, Dougal, and Gobbledy get into is absolutely hilarious. Words cannot describe how funny it was at times.

The characters in this book were a delight all on their own. Both boys had unique (and strong) personalities, while Gobbledy is...well Gobbledy truly is one of a kind! Then there's the supporting cast, like Mr. D, the now single father. I loved that Gobbledy actually took the time to portray the grieving process for him as well as the boys.

What my rambling post is trying to say is this: Gobbledy is a delightful novel, perfect for the holiday season. It might also be one of the best novels I've ever seen, when it comes to depicting grief at such a young age. I hope it helps someone out there, I really do.

I'm not generally a fan of middle grade novels, but this book is (so far) the only exception to that rule.

It's whimsical. It's funny. It's smart. I loved the absurdity of the whole story. The story effortlessly proves what adult fiction does all the time -- everything is life or death! In this case, to kids. Furry aliens obsessed with food. Ketchup factories. Secret agents. Christmas as a backdrop.
I want to call it an adventure story, but, at its heart, this is a story about trust and family.

Lis Anna-Langston has crafted amazing characters who feel as real as the kids in my neighborhood.
I was lucky to read an advanced copy of Gobbledy, and I plan on buying a couple of copies once it's released. It's going to make a great Christmas present that gets read year-round.

One last thing: If Hollywood doesn't "gobble" up this story fast and turn it into a movie I'll be shocked.

This was an absolutely wonderful story. I loved Dexter, Dougal, Fi, and Gobbledy. The story draws you in from the start, and you can almost see it unfolding in front of you (I could totally see this being turned into a kid's TV show). This book was full of adventure and friendship, while also weaving in the pain of loss, and the love of family. Even older readers will be able to appreciate this book, and it would be a perfect holiday read-along book. Highly recommend for middle grade readers and older.

A heartwarming tale of friendship, brotherhood and family. Dexter and Douglas lost their mom at a very young age. Their mother was an ardent stargazer and for the same reason Dexter loves them so dearly. Another thing that he also loves is critters that his dad dislikes. One day, he and his best friend, Fiona, find a mysterious spot in the forest. There is a golden rock which surrounded with mushrooms that's not normal. However, Dexter is able get a hold the golden rock and brings it back with him.

But things begin to change as Gobbledy enters their lives. Now, you may be thinking who is Gobbledy? Well, read the book and find yourself in the adventure that's a little magic and a tons of fun.

Gobbledy was one of my most anticipated book release and reading the whole book was just amazing. I cannot tell how much I adored this. It was fun and thrilling, Dexter, Douglas and Fiona felt so real that they actually became my favorite characters. The book added the charming Christmas vibe with a magical twist and in turn made it a wonderful reading experience. I read the entire book in just one sitting because it's honestly unputdownable. Gobbledy is like super cute and illustration in between the story makes it even more adorable.

Summary

Dexter always gets in trouble. He always brings critters at home, which his father doesn’t approve of. There was that tadpole in the bathtub, a feral cat in the backyard, and a chicken in the closet. One day, he finds a golden rock that hatches into an unidentified creature. Dexter names it Gobbledy because his brother, Dougal, says he gobbles anything. Brothers Dexter and Dougal, and their friend, Fi, hide Gobbledy the best way that they can to stay out of trouble. Later on, Dexter, Dougal, and Fi experience a once-in-a-lifetime adventure as they protect Gobbledy from two goons who call themselves the Planetary Society.

Review

Gobbledy is a children’s book by Lis Anna-Langston. It’s an adorably wonderful story about an alien! I think Fi’s description of Gobbledy as someone who looks like a cross between a prairie dog, a chinchilla, and a cartoon, is so amusing. And there many cute and funny moments in the story that I enjoyed very much. The characters and the storyline are nostalgic that it brought me back to when I was a kid who adored the movie, E.T. Of course, this is nothing like that because this book has its own precious moments to remember.

I’m giving this 5 out of 5 stars. It’s the perfect story to read during the holidays or any day when you need to brighten up. This book has beautiful illustrations and pristine editing, something that I rarely find in books, because even the most famous and bestselling novels have errors in them. I recommend it to ALL readers. I’m sure that kids and even adults will enjoy the adventure it brings, just like I did.

I loved "Gobbledy." It was funny, touching and delightful and the author did an excellent job in the writing itself. Sometimes writers take readers for granted and don't attempt perfection in their craft: This is particularly true of authors writing for younger readers. But Lis Anna-Langston did take those pains.
All the characters came to life, particularly Dexter and his dad. I'm glad Lis Anna did not spell out why Dexter's dad was so irritable with him, thus treating the readers like children (even if some of the readers are, or will be, children or middle-schoolers or teens). We know dad was having a hard time since his wife died.
And I'm glad Lis Anna did not write one of those reconciliation scenes where the characters throw their arms around each other and spout, Love ya, bro, or something silly like that. Reconciliation does not always have to be spelled out, and, in fact, is often a subtle thing.
Of course, I loved "Gobbledy" the space alien.
What a cute little fellow. I wanted to kiss him. And he has interesting powers.
Lis Anna, write more about Gobbledy and Dexter.

I received an advance review copy for free and am leaving this review voluntarily. Thank you Lis Anna-Langston and RABT Books Tours and PR. I'm excited to be a part of this tour.

Gobbledy is a captivating novel for middle graders. This book is full of adventure while also dealing with loss. While the holidays are happy for most of us, they can also be very difficult for some, especially if they have experienced a significant loss and are celebrating with one less family member this year.

This will be my first Christmas without my paternal grandmother. She loved Christmas! My fondest childhood memories are all the Christmas Eve’s we spent having large family dinners filled with joy and laughter. And dishes, there were a lot of dishes to wash post dinner. She also made the BEST sugar cookies, which we affectionately nicknamed as “Grandma cookies.”

This book follows three friends as they find a golden rock that turns into an alien. Filled with the magic of the holidays and one adventure after another, this book will keep your reader engaged from start to finish. The message of grief is well written and presented in a way that is easy for children to connect with.

The descriptions are rich in detail and will certainly have children’s imaginations in high gear as they visualize what the characters are experiencing. I highly recommend this spirited holiday themed book, it’s perfect for this time of year!

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy from the Great Escapes Book Tours. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.Gobbledy by Lis Anna-Langston is an honest-to-goodness lovely book for a middle grader.
How far would you go to protect a friend?
Dexter Duckworth
Dexter Duckworth is our main character, and he has had a terrible time that year trying to adjust to his new normal. See Dexter, his little brother Dougal, and his dad lost their mom and wife in the springtime. It's coming close to Christmas time, and Dexter is trying to do well. I love Dexter to pieces; I just want to hold him close and tell him everything will be fine even if he gets into trouble a lot. Dexter is a caring person, and I love how that shows with Gobbledy. I understand why he doesn't tell anyone besides his brother and his best friend Fi about Gobbledy. My only concern is how their father will react when he finds out. Overall, Dexter is a great character.
Gobbledy CRThe Story
Dexter and his friend Fi go off to the woods, where he finds a glowing rock that he puts into his Cricket Colony. Well, after that, things for Dexter don't go how he envisions it to. Dexter ends up trying to keep his little alien friend from a whole lot of trouble, even if that means landing into trouble himself. I loved this story, and how Ms. Langston wrote it kept me wanting to read it. The way Gobbledy is described is hilarious, and I fell for the little guy myself. Dexter is landed with the choices of protecting his own hide or keeping his friends, including Gobbledy, safe. Which one would you choose?
Five Stars
Ms. Langston has a way with words that keeps me thinking about them and how things could have gone the other way for these characters. What if Dexter never found Gobbledy, and would someone else have cared for Gobbledy as Dexter does? Another thought is, what would Dexter and Dougal be able to do with two of them if they found another? Many questions are left unanswered but enough to keep the reader thinking of their own answers to them. I am giving five stars to Gobbledy by Lis Anna-Langston, and I am definitely recommending it.

Gobbledy captures the magic that children inherently possess, a magic that growing up within society’s rigid confines destroys. I say magic even thought the main character, Dexter, feels his life lacks any since his mother died. To me, the longing he feels for her and the fact he thinks she lives in the stars qualifies as magic. The descriptions of Dexter’s feelings are haunting, yet beautiful. As an example, “She said that when stars die, they sometimes leave a black hole behind to remind everyone they were alive once. There is definitely a hole in our family. Not a bad hole, but a big hole. The kind of hole that sneaks up on me late at night when I remember. So, sometimes, I climb out here to forget.” Dexter and his family experience real grief. I think young readers will find this relatable. Not many children have lost parents, but kids do have to process the loss of grandparents, pets, and others dear to them.

Although Gobbledy features real struggles kids face, the main events are fantastical. The fun starts when Dexter encounters a golden rock, which grows into a creature called Gobbledy. Dexter, his brother (Dougal), and his friend (Fi) work to hide Gobbledy’s existence from Dexter and Dougal’s father. Of course, delightful chaos ensues. I’m not going to say what Gobbledy is because that will be a nice surprise for the reader. Ultimately, this is a wonderful story about a family navigating grief and finding a way to move beyond their sadness. This transformation is mostly thanks to Gobbledy. Highly recommended for young readers and those who find touching stories comforting.

Gobbledy, A Novel is billed as a holiday story, and it does take place very near to Kissmas (Christmas), but the story is richer than a once-a-year-read. Kids will love the well-conceived and developed characters. Gobbledy is a believable, intelligent, lovably quirky alien. Though Dexter and brother Dougal would not normally combine skills to help each other, Lis Anna-Langston convincingly brings the two brothers together. Though each sees the problem differently, both have Gobbledy’s interests at heart. Dexter, Dougal, and Fi, nicely balance each other.

The story is multilayered. Dexter has troubles at school and home, and now has an alien he loves and feels he needs to protect. Fi is crucial to the story as Dexter’s only real friend. Through Fi, Dexter gains confidence as the two care for Gobbledy. Kids will love the story, finding Gobbledy comical yet sweet. With his long, tufted ears, 8-digit toes, and bright, inquisitive eyes, Gobbledy would make a cute stuffed animal. (Sales would cause mayhem not seen since the Cabbage Patch kids.)

Anna-Langston’s story is believable on every level. She smoothly transfers readers from school to home and then into the woods with little struggle. Dad keeps the boys jumping. He is still overcome with grief from losing his wife nearly a year ago. Running the house, raising the boys, and working at the ketchup factory overwhelms Dad, who is constantly stressed. Kids will love the ketchup factory, one of many comical points in the story. The writing draws pictures readers can easily see, and the realistic illustrations will help those having trouble visualizing characters, or the story.

Adults are minimal in Gobbledy, A Novel, as they should be in kids’ lit. Four adults enter Gobbledy’s story: two from the Planetary Society, Principal Carlotta “Snarly” Watson, and Dexter’s father. Yet it is the adults who round out the story of Dexter’s school troubles. It is a scene kids will absolutely love. Many creative scenes, including Gobbledy helping Dexter’s family imaginatively celebrate Kissmas, show Gobbledy is more similar to earth’s inhabitants than he is different.

There are no loose ends hanging around at close of the final page, but curiosity, and a genuine love for this story’s character, will fill readers with questions. Where is Gobbledy now? Does he stay with Dexter, and if so, how does dad react when he discovers the cute squatter in his attic? Gobbledy and his new family stay with you for a long time. After reading Gobbledy, A Novel, readers will want for more. I sincerely hope Ms. Anna-Langston has more to tell us about Gobbledy’s adventures in his new home.

Yet beneath the magic and fun there is an undercurrent of sorrow and loss each character is trying to move through, for this will be the first Kissmas without Dexter and D-man’s beloved mother. How these characters―and their furry little alien sidekick―navigate this strange and complicated time in their lives will amaze and inspire you. Young adults and old adults alike will love the adventures that await inside these pages.”

Gobbledy is a fun-filled holiday story that adds up to two brothers, three friends, unlimited jars of peanut butter, a ketchup factory, and one little alien far, far from home.

Description:

Ever since eleven-year-old Dexter Duckworth and his brother, Dougal, lost their mom, everything has been different. But “different” take on a whole new meaning when, one day just before Christmas (or Kissmas, as they call it), Dexter finds a golden rock in the forest that hatches into an adorable alien. Gobbledy is smarter than he seems and is lost on planet Earth. Before long, Gobbledy takes Dexter, Dougal, and their best friend Fi on an adventure of friendship, family, and loss―one that requires them all to stay out of trouble, protect Gobbledy from a shadowy group called the Planetary Society and prepare for their school’s Winter Extravaganza Play, where Dexter has to be a dreaded Gingerbread Man.

It's been six months since Dexter and Dougal lost their mom. Their dad is trying hard to make it a Merry Kissmas, but between his work at the ketchup factory, and Dexter's inability to stay out of trouble, it has been a struggle. It's not that Dexter goes looking for trouble - it just seems to find him. When he and his brainy, techno-geek neighbor, Fiona, find glowing rocks, electrified mushrooms and a strange piece of metal in the forest - they know they've stumbled onto something mystical. After one of the glowing rocks begins to change - and a fuzzy, adorable being materializes - it's no longer mystical - it's extraterrestrial. Dexter names his new little friend "Gobbledy" - because he eats everything in sight!

It becomes clear that Gobbledy is lonely and missing his own kind when he starts carrying around a rock similar to the one from which he was spawned. He cries sometimes, he points to the sky, he builds miniature "home" scenes from items found around the house. The kids try to help him by contacting the Planetary Society - but that backfires when they learn that this "organization" consists of two mean guys who want nothing more than to steal Gobbleday and use him to gain fame and fortune. Despite getting closer and closer to "Red Alert" (the point at which Dexter is grounded for life), he stops at nothing to protect his new little friend - including jumping into a vat of ketchup to rescue him - among other things.

At first this story felt a little like "E.T." with one parent gone, another struggling to make it, and an alien coming on the scene, but it eventually diverged into its own unique adventure with both laughable and touching moments. It wasn't the ending I expected, and I'm kind of glad. There is plenty of room for a sequel!!

Gobbledy is a middle grade story that is written by Lis Anna-Langston. I read this story with my 8 and 10 year old sons. This is the first book that I have read by this author. We enjoyed it very much.

Dexter and Dougal have lost their mom. Their lives were changed forever when this happened. They experience more change when Dexter finds a gold rock. It hatches into an alien. Dexter, Dougal and their friend Fi, are trying to figure out who or what this creature is. It's pretty smart and takes them on an adventure that they will never forget.

I love the lesson that the author has tied up into this book. The author has seamlessly woven in a lesson in how to process loss and grief in a way that middle grade children can understand it. The author has also peppered in humor and a fun adventure with Gobbledy and his new friends.

This story is well written, contains fun characters and a unique storyline. I hope to read more from this author in the coming days.

Ever had a day when you were a kid that everything went wrong? Well that is the case here but fear not, the path forward will lead the way! This a fun book about kids being kids and adventure being adventurous. The two brothers find that working together is the key to a better relationship.

When is a rock not just a rock? When that rock will turn into an eating machine. Nothing says gobble like eating the pizza slice and the paper plate!

There is a good lesson in this book for kids who have sadly suffered the loss of a loved one in their early life. A person you loved is not completely gone, they live on in your heart. A great book for kids who want to live an adventure unlike any they do in their life!

Disclaimer: I received a copy from the author in the hopes I'd review it.

My Rating: 5 stars

Lis Anna-Langston has brought us a grand tale with the debut of Gobbledy. This book is a real adventure written for the middle grades, but the impact it has had on me is just as significant. The sense of urgency always makes me excited to read, and Gobbledy gives us plenty to be passionate about.

Gobbledy is a refreshing look at age-old matters such as loss, disappointment, and love of a family. What this novel brings to the surface is the necessary elements of finding your place in a world that doesn’t make any sense. When your life makes no sense, and struggle with disappointing everyone around you, it is a lot of stress for a child.

Gobbledy doesn’t hide any of this stress but increases the amount until the poor kids can’t hold anymore, yet then blossoms in a way that allows you to laugh and love along with them.

I received this book as a free book and I am giving a honest review in exchange (which was not required).
I chose this book because the title caught my eye and I wanted to read it to see if a young child in our family might be interested in reading in it. I found it to be really cute, and interesting. Dexter, Fi and Dougal are very well developed and the story line is well paced and entertaining. It deals with a challenging subject (death of a parent) and manages to do so without be dramatic or depressing. Gobbledy is such an adorable character as well, I was really pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the book once I picked it up. I read 95% of it in one sitting because it's a cute story and I could see the kids working together trying to keep Gobbledy a secret from Dexter's dad. Fun book for young readers.

If you are looking for a book to gift or to read this holiday season, I highly recommend Gobbledy.

I read this book with my sons and we all enjoyed it, immensely! It is a middle grade level book, but just like with Disney--I feel like we are never to old to enjoy a good story, no matter who the target audience is 😉

This story follows a young boy named Dexter, his brother Dougal and their female friend/neighbor Fiona as they discover an adorable alien in the woods.

The story discusses loss of a parent and how children deal with that grief during the holidays. There is a lot of wonderfully done humor balanced with a serious subject in this novel.

It's a heart warming story that can be enjoyed by everyone, with important messages and a touch of magic/fantasy/sci-

A fantastic attention grabbing book that kept me engaged and dying to read more. I loved Gobbledy, the visitor from somewhere else, who brightened the lives of Dexter, Dougal and their friend, Fi, when they discover him in the forest. He was just what the boys needed to help them heal at the first Kissmass since their mother died. This story was funny, imaginative and kids will love disappearing into it or listening to it being read to them in class. I hope there is a second book coming soon!!

A fun adventure with an out-of-this world holiday miracle. Touching and healing especially for anyone who has lost a lived one this year or ever. I was intensely reading for the reveal of the visitor. The structure was beautifully built. Loved the twists and turns which brought the message of love and appreciation to the forefront. Whether you read it out loud to your kids or have them read it quietly, you will definitely be drawn in.

I received a review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
