A funny, furious monologue about navigating a world that cares so much about you keeping it together, it doesn't notice you falling apart. Margaret Perry's play Collapsible was first performed at VAULT Festival, London, in February 2019, winning a VAULT Origins Award for outstanding new work. This new edition is published alongside the 2019 production at Assembly, Edinburgh.
I was skeptical of this play being a one-woman piece, however I love the dialogue and would be keen to stage it or see it staged. The surreal elements throughout in addresses to the audience are delicious. I like the end, but feel there is something small missing still.
my initial thoughts about this play were that i’d be giving it a 3 star rating, but the ending was really well done so that bumped it up to a 4. i’d like to see this live some day - i think it might translate better in person than on the page
An odd, unsettling monologue, depicting one young woman's disintegration following a redundancy; quite humorous in places, but also rather tragic. My one qualm is what is going on with that ending, which seems to imply that all our queer-identifying heroine needs to 'straighten' her out is a fawning male telling her how great she is. Yuck.
