I’m well aware of this singular fact of my life. Even as I stitch up patients, correcting their imperfections, I know that there is no cosmetic surgery that will fix what’s broken inside of me. Which is why I don’t let anyone get too close.
I learned early on, most people can’t be trusted. The ones who were entrusted with protecting you can do the most harm. So I deal with life the only way I learned how. I fight. On the days when work gets to me, or the memories from my past become too much, I head to the Underground. A place where even a plastic surgeon such as myself, can let my guard down and give in to my base emotions. It works, for the most part.
Then in walks Grace. She is the very embodiment of her name. A new nurse on the surgical unit. The sparks that fly between us don’t end once we exit the operating room. For the first time, I’m challenged to give in to the feelings I never believed myself capable, and all that comes with it. Or push her away to save her from an ugly past I worked long and hard to forget.
Please Jacob's Song is a standalone BWWM romance. This book may contain content that is triggering to some readers. Sensitive material includes childhood abuse and SA, mental illness, and cancer (FMC is in remission but the aftermath is a part of their story). However, HEA is guaranteed.
5 stars and cheers for this bwwm enemies to lovers medical romance! Grace and Jacob were perfect together! Their pasts although painful only served as stepping stone for their love. No surgery necessary. Now I want to know more about Luke and Journey, the brother and sister of the h/h respectively. Pick up and read this story today!
I really liked that this was set in a hospital. I am surprised to realize that I have not come across too many workplace romances that are set in in hospitals. You'd think with the popularity of medical/romance dramas like Grey's Anatomy and Chicago Med these would pop up a lot more in romance.
I also liked Jacob and Grace's on page chemistry and romantic connection.
I did not like the need for so much background tragedy/trauma. And it isn't just one thing, it is one thing compounded by yet another awful thing for both characters. I don't mind some background angst but I swear the barrage of horror some of these characters endure is just too much.
My other did not like is a writing issue. The overuse of 'giggle'. Normally if I am super absorbed in a story sometime word over usage won't bother me or or even register. But this one, I swear I could have been plastered out of my mind if I played a drinking game for the word giggle. She was a gigglingest grown ass woman I have ever read about.
Another great engaging story by this author who never fails to keep you invested in her stories, they are never boring or dull. Always full of love and possessiveness by the men who love their woman and have not time for other females even when they are throwing themselves at them. Great read.
They were his healing balm to his tormented mind that kept trying to push away the memories of his tortured childhood. Doctor Jacob Reynolds was called Dr. Jackass behind his back. He was an excellent plastic surgeon but those skills did not translate to his personality. There was a darkness he was hiding and the only person who could soothe him was Nurse Grace Reynolds, with her kiss and her voice singing to him the way she used to sang to soothe her mother.
But Grace was hiding a secret too. She did not want to be seen as half a woman. She also made her desire known about motherhood and why, which fit into Jacob's life as well. They meshed perfectly. Even thou Jacob's demons came to haunt him, Grace knew him well enough to and loved him well enough to stand by him and get him the help he needed. She never abandoned him and in turn, he loved her enough to keep her by his side.
Tiffany always writes a well-written story that leads the reader to empathize with the characters. My heart just went out to Jacob because of his upbringing. No child should endure what he did. I just felt that he was a little harsh on his father though. And in that same vane, his brother Luke was a little harsh on him. We still don't know what Luke told him in the end. I guess Luke will be getting his own story so we will find out then.
This story was a very poignant tale about how emotional, physical and sexual abuse has long-lasting effects on a child well into their adulthood. It also shows the effects that a parent's mental illness has on their offspring and the choices they make about their life because of it. In the end, Grace was her namesake, his saving grace and Jacob's song.
The only problem I had with this story is that with all of the songs listed in the book, I wished the author would have created a Spotify playlist and provided the link at the beginning of the story. It would have given an enhanced reading experience.
What a beautiful story from this author. Grace really was Jacob’s saving grace. I always say that love can conquer any situation. I’m happy Jacob has Grace to help him fight his battles and I’m also happy his relationship with his brother is mending. (I hope to read his story soon I.e Luke). What gave me the greatest pleasure is Susanne getting what she deserves wicked girl. What Jacob and Luke experienced with their mother was ..... I can’t even find the words to express it. This book really touched a deep part in me. I’d definitely recommend it
First time reading this author and I’m pleasantly surprised. From the amazing storyline to the relatable characters and everything in between. I genuinely enjoyed this book and I cannot wait to read more of this authors work in the future.
Also how amazing is it that this is an interracial love story? I love reading about interracial love but I rarely ever come across a book that does it right.
Two imperfect people who are perfect for each other. Jacob is a tortured soul that endured physical, sexual, and emotional abuse from his parents throughout his childhood and teenage years. He is the definition of “broken” but never sought any professional help to deal with the aftermath of his abuse. Grace is still tormented by her mother’s mental health issues and subsequent death, her father’s ignorance and abandonment, her sister’s undiagnosed condition, and her own medical history. They both excel in their careers but fail abysmally in their personal lives. Together they begin the healing process that leads to love.
I’m so happy to finally take this book for my list. This was a believable story line. I like Tiffany Peterson, developed the characters and told each of there stories.. This storyline is so real.. Tiffany keep up the great writing...
Usually any book from MS. Patterson, well is a book worth dropping everything and start reading (she is also unequivocally one of my top favorite author), but this one, this right here 🙄🙊🤔not good at all. Character wise, they were ok. Jacob was truly a troubled soul and for a top surgeon it truly baffled me how true the saying goes "doctors are their worst patients". While Grace, even if the same saying could apply to her, she had more understanding, more compassion and more empathy to the work or vocation and that right here showed how much research MS. Patterson put into this and was able to make us see or have a glimpse on how the lives of these important people are. That said, this was the only reason this earned a 2 stars also with the brief cameo appearance of Johsua and Kayla Townsend, with Connor and Damien as well. But if it was not for these instances, this would have me not even finished it and just chuck it to trash, because it was just not there with so many issues, such as: 1) since the beginning of this book, we gathered that Jacob was traumatized, violated and severely damaged, but we didn't know how or why? 2) the book continues by trying to put on an air of mystery with Grace involvement, but her to had her baggage, mainly journey that no other explanation was given! 3) then we get to the part of them getting together but nothing is being said, except that finally Jouney is explained! 4) we do see how infatuated Jacob is with this Luke fighter, but no reason except that we are left with the thought that he just loves this sport since he indulge in it? 5) finally Suzanne triggers everything and even thou by then Grace had given or opened all of her baggage, Jacob is just starting and we have to believe it's bad, very bad.... But at this point we are at 80% of the book, and it's a rush to the finish line. And finally this not wanting children and all of that was just a little bit too much and not a MS. Patterson original, more like a rushed book and not knowing how to end it by adding so much miseries around it you would think you were in a twilight zone movies. I skipped so many pages and part in this book!, not worth my time at all and will not recommend in it to no one....
The book was really well written and touched on difficult topics. I really enjoyed the fact that there was real characters growth and development, especially for Jacob. Grace was an amazing person, so caring and supportive. After Jacob’s episode, she could have stepped back but instead she stepped up. I like that the author didn’t create a spurious event to break them up but instead allowed them to evolve together. The reason why I didn’t give it full marks are, first of all, I would have liked to read about Jacob and Luke’s conversation. I know the book was about personal growth but it would have been nice to see them in more social settings. I gather that Jacob is a loner but I would have hoped that Grace wasn’t. Being so wrapped up in work, fighting and Grace can’t be enough. Lastly it’s the most controversial point. Their position on children. For Grace I can understand because she became a « mother » at a young age but for Jacob I’m sure it’s a direct consequence of his upbringing and abuse. Given that this is a romance novel I would have liked them to have a child even if it was in a few years. It would have showed true healing for Jacob. They both have a lot to give.
Jacob knows he's damaged, but when he's in the OR or the fighting ring he doesn't feel so broken. In one of his comfort zones, the Operating Room, he also finds his Grace, and that makes him feel whole. Grace has always felt that her calling was to take care of others, which is why she loves being a nurse. When she walks into the OR the and meets the one doctor everyone tries to avoid she's determined not to let him intimidate her. In fact, she show's Jacob that he's met his match and that impresses him as much as her seep dimples when she smiles. When these two take some time to get to now each other outside of the hospital, they find that they may have more in common than just their love of helping others. Once their pasts rear their ugly heads will the find peace in each others arms, or will it send them running for fear of getting hurt again. This story has a little bit of everything that made for and excelling read. There were health issues, shattered childhoods, passionate love making, and of course, enough romance to make you swoon. I loved Jacob and Grace's story along with the added drama from the side characters. It was truly a great read from beginning to end.
Gotdamn, that was FANTASTIC!! There is something about Hit brooding men, that does something to me... Mmmm! Jacob Aka Dr Reynolds (Dr Jack**s to some) is a gifted plastic surgeon, the OR is his playground, but outside the OR he is one troubled man due to his pass. He has no true friends, he doesn't care to have any, no special someone, he doesn't care to have one, that is until Nurse Grace Young. And from that day on his life took a different turn... You will cry, you will feel their pain and so much more. I did! Grab your copy and see how Grace and Jacob will get their happily after. A fantastic read!!
This was just so so good from the beginning to the end. The writer gives us a perfect but imperfect story and hits all four corners. I love that we get two imperfect people trying to live their lives in spite of the crazy that's happened in their lives. I think it was a little strange that we got a couple who was so plain spoken about their wants and the things they didn't,it was like talking to a friend. This was a story that crosses into some really heavy subjects and the writer handles them like an pro. If you want some fantastic writing and a really good story ,then this is for you. Can't wait to get a look at Luke and the woman that lands him.
I THINK GRACE & JACOB have come a close second to AARON & PATIENCE.
I knew in the other books that Jacob had a story behind his reasons for fighting, but boy was his story DEEP. I figured it out early on in the book but still some things i didn’t suspect which were pretty sad. Ms Patterson always touch on the serious issues and this time it wasn’t any different.
These two were meant for each other. Jacob needed a strong woman who would be in his corner as well as not take his SHIT. Grace is that Ride or Die. Great storyline and great chemistry.
If you don't want to learn that all that glitters is not gold, this is not the book for you. Jacob Reynolds seemed to have it all. Good looks, wealth, brilliant career, a tough fighter AKA Doc. However he was a broken man who drank too much, constantly put his career in danger, had no close friends and suffered mental and sexual abuse by a parent as a child. This is one of Tiffany's best and most important books. It's not always small or weak women that suffer mental illness due to being abused, sometimes it's big strong Alpha men. Please read this book. Thank you Tiffany.
Wow! What a touching story. Jacob has some serious demons stemming from his childhood and Grace is the only one that can heal his fragile heart. A skilled and brilliant surgeon, Jacob meets Nurse Grace and fire instantly ignites between them. Grace also carries a painful secret that only Jacob can help her process and heal from. It's just a really good story and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. You get the great love scenes but also a realistic take on how people deal with inner demons and mental illness. It's really truly touching. Read this!
His ladder to his light became his obsession....His Grace became his way out of darkness...His Grace became his road to solace and her voice and words became his song of his heart....through pain and torment comes love and acceptance....Grace was the beginning to Jacob's rebirth...despite the vile creature that birthed him...I hope Luke's story is next..hopes it involves his steps...to Journey...
This was such a great story! Jacob was an outstanding plastic surgeon but he had MAJOR ISSUES: people issues, touching issues, anger issues, just to name a few, and he had a generally nasty disposition. When he met Grace, instead of her scurrying away, she looked him dead in the eye and stood up to him. Jacob was hooked. Grace managed to quickly break through most of Jacob's barriers, but he still had a few demons lurking around.
Jacob's life appeared to be A-1 super grade until you looked deeper. The names his co-workers called him behind his back was relevant until he met Nurse Grace. From that day forward, his life and hers were on a parallel course to healing one another's life experiences from long ago. A poignant tale about true love, and allowing love into your life.
This isn’t the usual steamy story full of turmoil and breaking up and finally getting back together type of story. The steamy scenes were good but that’s all. I’m very disappointed.
I absolutely loved reading this story. Their was so many everyday real issues going on in the book. I loved how every issue was touched on. Grace was such a warm and inviting person and a great lead. Jacob showed so much growth though out the story.
Jacob and Grace were a match made in heaven. They both went through so much growing up and it made them better people! This story was heart jerker and I couldn’t put my kindle down. It was a great read!
As for Jacob - I kept ... I knew it - I KNEW IT. :X It bothered me that he hated bedding and it's because I knew - I KNEW there was something bad there.
Grace and Journey - it made me so sad Journey thinks she's so broken because she's bipolar. Like... I guess I just :X think it's NBD? It's not as if it's her fault. [Not that depression etc is anyway - but bipolar is genetic.] So ... And ... I kinda wasn't sure why Jacob was mad when he was reinstated - like did he think Grace had told his business? But ... at least he ASKS her.
Things definitely definitely aren't easy for these two. Grace as a cancer survivor ... it's kinda "bonkers" cuz - she's a survivor and you KNEW something was up when she wouldn't take off her bra at first - but this traumatic thing almost - ALMOST becomes a "non-issue" compared to everything else.
I loved that she sang, and that Jacob connected to it so much. That Grace's dad apologized. I would've kinda liked to see more of the Townsends but - it wasn't their story. I guess I just wanted Grace to have a bigger/better support network. [And I think the wives would've welcomed her into the fold nicely.]
As for Jacob... just... I can't even think about his trauma cuz it makes me sick - my mind shies away from it. But my heart is broken for him.
What a difficult, excellent story.
Honestly I've talked myself into 4 stars because the topic and everything is so well written and handled. I initially said C++ - because there are also errors and such; typos ...
but oof. I even want to read about Jacob's brother - though I'm not sure if he has a story (yet?)
Two people trying to heal from emotional trauma caused by circumstances outside of their control! To do that, to find love and make it work, while still healing equals a lot of drama! Tiffany has done an amazing job of capturing some of those feelings and the drama. And, there was an overload of emotional drama!
Grace, to me, was written as this beautiful almost perfect specimen that men found extremely appealing. She was hiding a part of herself about which she felt insecure, something she saw as an imperfection, a flaw that a lot of women allow to traumatize them emotionally.
Jacob, whom I liked less and less the more I read, did have my sympathy as he had experienced things in his childhood that no child should ever have to from a supposedly trusted source! He had a lot of unresolved anger as a result and it made him a bitter, angry and mostly unlikeable person. The only exception, Grace, with whom he fell in love and she became the catalyst to help him seek healing. Which he so needed because he was a total mess!
As I sit here doing this review, I still dislike Jacob’s character, with his arrogant and aggressive behavior toward any man who came near Grace. I do not think he deserves someone like her, but love helps one to forgive and sometimes overlook the outward to see into the heart! I also think that at some point he should attempt to apologize for his rude and arrogant behavior and learn how to treat people with a bit more kindness!
Side Note: Sometimes what we deserve based upon our behavior is not what or who we really need based upon our emotional and physical issues. So, I will say that in this story a Grace is just what Jacob really needs. Someone who will love him unconditionally and look past all his emotions and mental hang ups and be there for him to reach for when he has exhausted all that pent up anguish. Thank you to all the women like Grace, who look past the outward and at the heart, then show up to say I am here and not going anywhere! Thanks also to all our Dr. Kearns, we need more!
Anyway, that is my soapbox rant for the day and this is just fiction!
Devoured!! That’s the only way to describe what happened here. I started this late at night, woke up and in between work and everything I was reading. Something about this story had me hooked. I’m so happy I read Jacob’s story- he was mentioned a few times in the Townsend series. As said many times about the underground, everyone there has their demons. Well Doc’s were what I expected and yet it didn’t change anything about this story. I love Jacob and Grace. They reminded me of Aaron and Patience. Now my two favorite couples of Tiffany’s. This will probably be re-read in the future; it was that good to me. And also a change from my previous readings by this author, in that the woman is the one in true need. Grace has her own stuff, but it’s Doc who is truly drowning so to speak. I just love how all of those things were addressed. Anytime a author doesn’t sugar coat, such serious matters and makes the conclusion more realistic. It makes my heart happy. Tiffany did a wonderful job of handling this delicately and yet gave us an HEA.
Lastly, shout out to her for giving us a couple who isn’t looking for the standard relationship goals. No spoilers, but if you read; you will know what I mean. I love how that was handled as well and that it didn’t change because they feel in love.
Another great story, this one about a tormented doctor, Jacob and his nightingale Grace. They both have experienced traumatic childhoods: Grace’s mom had untreated bipolar disorder and an uninvolved father, Jacob had a history of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. Somehow, Grace is able to get thru all the walls Jacob built around his heart and after some big obstacles, they are able to get to their HEA. I initially didn’t see WHAT Grace saw in Jacob because he could be quite caustic, but Grace was willing to dig thru all the sarcasm and find a heart in there.
We also get brief cameos from the men who fight in the underground arena (Jacob, “Doc” is one of them) but for the most part the story focuses on the main couple. Since this is an interracial couple I’d have like to see that dealt with in the story, but still a very enjoyable read
Jacob's song was the first novel I have read by Ms. Patterson. I love to read when a novel is based on healthcare (medical). I was sold on the book once I read the synopsis. It was a great deep, thought-provoking book. The childhood that Jacob endured definitely impacted his adulthood. The things his mother would do to him was plain indescribable and horrible. The way his mother made him and his brother Luke fight released the beast in them both. They both used fighting to release their stress and frustrations.
Grace was Jacob's fresh breath of air. Grace's voice soothes Jacob's soul. She had her troubled past as well but she was a natural caregiver. They really did make a great team that complemented each other. Although, neither wanted kids I think they would have made great parents.
