The Ways

Rate this book
The Legislature says women must breed and produce a viable fetus.
The Legislature says parents must relinquish their children.
The Legislature says violators will be executed.
Allegiant on the surface, Julianna has done an almost perfect job of fooling the Legislature into thinking she’s loyal, even though they brutally murdered her girlfriend in front of her. But she made a promise to her dead lover: she’d remain alive, stoic and tormented by her loss, and find some way to avenge her death. But when she finds herself pregnant and in violation of the Conception Laws, she must flee and find a way to protect the child from the Legislature. Torn between her desire to be a mother and her fear of what attachment can do, she embarks on a journey that just might change the world.

This is such an amazing and terrifying book at all once. On the surface it’s about a dystopian future that seems all too close at hand given today’s political climate. I could not put this down- the ending was beautiful and heartbreaking- I was left wanting more!

The premise is really interesting, and makes you think about some modern issues like racism, socioeconomic inequality, education gaps, government influence, and probably more. And I’ve only read like 3 chapters so far.
Also I like the snippets of the Legislature, it helps provide context and background for things that happen in the story and it’s distributed throughout the book in a way that’s nice and easy to deal with (so far).
But just one thing about the physical copy of the book, the text size is like really super small which makes it kinda hard to read. I think that’s because it’s not fully/properly published or edited, but I really don’t know.

I actually really loved this book, I just wanted to keep reading because the world and the story and the characters are so interesting.
There were some assorted minor spelling/punctuation mistakes throughout, but they didn’t really take away from the story.
One note, I think the new words/syntax used in this book like ‘removed’ and ‘zones’ and ‘tiers’ were used really well, it wasn’t overwhelming and some things I got from context but some I had to keep looking back at that portion of the Legislature at the beginning of the book with the definitions, and I remember not knowing what one or two words were and not being able to figure it out or find the definition, I forget what they were but I think I got them eventually.
I also think the dividing the book into 3 parts worked really well, and the time jumps flowed really nicely.
The bits where Julianna is remembering a story from her past are integrated very nicely and spread out which was good, but also made it tricky to go back and piece together stuff that happened in the past when I wanted to do that (mostly the stuff about Corsica).
Anyways, I feel like I have a lot more that I want to say about this book if someone would just ask me more specifically.
