The Academy is a galaxy-class school, created to train the next generation of Gatekeepers.
Jules Parker is attending the Academy, alongside her best friend Patty. When the Kold threaten everything her father and his friends have spent years building, she must reveal that her Iskios abilities are stronger than ever.
With Magnus and Slate away on the Horizon, and Mary working on the board of the Alliance of Worlds, Dean finds himself out of the action for the first time. He works on a plan to set a trap against the mysterious Kold, and things culminate as the looming attack grows, leaving Dean shocked to find someone he trusted has betrayed him.
The Academy is under attack, but will it still stand when the dust settles? Find out in the newest installment of the Survivors adventure!
Another mediocre entry, leans necessarily to a YA style as the focus shifts towards the Academy. Anyone hoping for a few decent twists and turns will be disappointed by a plot that telegraphs betrayal more clearly than a Bat Signal. As has become normal for the series, plot elements are shoehorned in with little regard to the believability of the character’s motivations. However, those same characters remain likeable in this lazy soap opera.
I can't wait for the series to continue, sad of the death of one of the characters but I know all my favorites can't continue to survive. Edge of your seat rollercoaster ride. Absolutely recommend.
The Kold threat to the Alliance of Worlds, the Academy and humanity is coming to a head
Like a huge pimple on the face of humanity the Kold threat pops and evil corruption erupts. The Gatekeeper Academy is open for business and Jules and her friends are students. Hidden in plain sight, the Kold have infiltrated all levels of Earth, New Speros and Haven. It's up to Jules to save the students and the Academy from the terror the Kold will unleash. Can she manage it without her Iskos abilities? We'll see!
All my favorites are in action to save the Alliance. Jules, Hugo, Patty and Dean Jr., Slate, Dean, Natalie, Magnum and Mary all play their role in saving the Academy and Haven. All our old friends play their parts and it's so good to see all of them again. Like a favorite pair of old worn blue jeans, the cast slips on comfortably. All the weak spots are worn and ragged, saggy and loose in all the right placrs, the point is, I'm used to seeing all our heroes and look forward to their presence. It's an outstanding crew and they run a tight ship and I love each and every one of them. The continuing tale of the Survivors is an amazing storyline, told by a master storyteller. I have so thoroughly enjoyed the Academy segment, I look forward to more adventures! This is a great read!
We get to start this story saying good-bye to an old friend. Too bad someone wants to kill off a lot of the attendees while they sleep. Dean's daughter, Jules, is slowly coming in to her Iskios powers. And she finally gets to attend the Gatekeepers Academy. Her best friend, Patty, is there, too, at least for a little while. Poor Jules is so bereft when her friend is no longer at the Academy. She has a hard time of things and is taken with Professor Thompson when he takes a keen interest in her. And away from the Academy there are stirrings of the Kold getting ready to cause major problems. Poor Dean just wants a quiet life but is constantly being drawn into the Alliance that he helped to create. I just loved how all this and more is brought to us by Nathan Hystad's great writings. Looking forward to learning more of these friends and how their life unfolds.
I'm not going to review each and every of the 18, so far, books in this series because it would be exhausting. Suffice it to say, as I just this morning told my son, to have the talent to write a series of 18 books (so far) and each and every book be as engaging, thrilling and be able to pull a reader right into the story instead of being a spectator to it is so rare and his books do that. From book 1 to the current book 18. Also, these are not novellas or short stories. Each in this series is a full on NOVEL. I've been opened to genres I never thought I'd be interested in before and it's writers like Nathan Hystad that make that possible .... that make reading ..... an important part of my life.
This is another great instalment of the series, where I’m slowly reading from a box set. This one is filled with action, as usual, but also focuses more on Jules, Dean Parker’s daughter, which is fascinating and delightful to see how much she’s like her father.
The World Alliance is in danger of being pulled apart by those filled with hatred and I enjoyed seeing how things developed and how the cast of characters coped and acted.
It’s well-written and detailed with a great sense of place.
I'm sure this is my favorite book in the series up to this point. I have a feeling it will remain that way even after I've read the others. It was nice to witness the Alliance in action. It was also devastatingly realistic and relatable (with the exception of the being in space part lol).
Bringing people together is easy but keeping them together is the real challenge. So many races have come together in harmony on a single planet but of course not everyone feels the same. The Alliance has a traitor in their midst. One that has learned to blend in and infiltrate. This time will Dean Parker be enough?
Loved that they developed Jules back story and liked the action. It helps to be a Parker and Dean and Mary are great parents. What an adventure for the Academy and the children
Love the new perspective from Jewls. This is her coming of age and coming to terms with her abilities. The academy is under attack and there's a slew of terrorist attacks from the new enemy of The Cold.
Love these books! They keep things interesting and so much can be done in this universe. I have read many series and it’s hard to keep the story quality up as you move along but damn it keeps getting better. Are these books perfect.. no but I can’t say I’ve read anything in recent years that has done such a great job over nine books. I get the idea of a story arc and books ending but with a series like this it truly can just continue if new worlds are to be found! Thank you!
Just one month ago, in my review of Book 9, I said, "It's hard to believe that after nine books in this fantastic series the stories still feel so fresh and new. If this series had been published before Star Wars, they would have made this as the blockbuster movies." That is still true for Book 10, "The Academy". How this author can produce his successive novels so fast and have them so exciting and action-packed is amazing. I personally don't like or do, what I consider to be HS Book Report style reviews. No reviewer can match the skill of the author in writing a summary of the book, and do it without giving away actions & events that should be disclosed at the pace set by the author. I will say that this entire series began when an alien race tried to eliminate the human race. Several Hybrid Beings married special humans and gave them information to help them avoid an Event that would have accomplished the destruction of mankind. The series chronicles the actions and events of several of these early heroes as they form alliances with many other alien races. The book focuses on an Acadamy that has been formed to educate especially talented children of most of the alien species that are part of the expanding Alliance. Of course, there are some who have very strong feelings and beliefs opposed to this Alliance concept and have chosen to focus their rage against the Academy and the children attending. You might expect all "The Good-Guys" to survive victoriously. This isn't a "spoiler" but, I will say this author has the courage to not be this fanciful and allows realistic outcomes. What does that mean??? Read the book. And, do yourself a big favor. Start with the first book in the series, "The Event". Each book this author writes can stand on its own and be enjoyed. But, to truly enjoy it, and be familiar with all the characters, it should be read one after the other. If you're just becoming familiar with this author, or this series, you are so fortunate to be able to start at Book 1 and read them without any confusing interruptions from other books in the same genre. I've done the following a couple of times; when this series is finally complete, I'm going to put aside everything else and read the entire series without interruption. I may even get the audible books for a really special experience. Review by THE HOLEY ONE
Love all the characters, they are like family to me. I love that it is friendly to family, loyalty and integrity; qualities not too popular these days, especially in sci -fi. Thank you Nathan for this series so totally innovative. I hope it never ends.
This story had a lot of plots and the characters where truly believable. You will see will each character grow in their way. Looking forward to the next plot. Jules and Hugo are two interesting sibling, I was.happy to see Dean finally understand Jules role. Keep up the writing!
Whole series. The plots, the characters, the aliens, the writing! I hope the author can think up more adventures for Dean, and then a grown up Jules. After all there is a whole universe out there to explore.
Another exciting book by Nathan. The Survivors is a fantastic story written around Dean Parker, his family and all of the different characters that have evolved in each of the books.
