Rate this book
A small New Mexico town turns into a death trap for a man riding his own vengeance trail. If only the women weren’t so distracting, and his back wasn’t such a broad target, he might be able to get out of town alive.

Maybe he can help the sheriff, and maybe that will be the last mistake he ever makes. So many secrets for such a small town. So many strong-minded, beautiful women. Should he join forces with the sheriff, or are his chances better on the other side of the law? Lots of action. Lots of surprises. Lots of people will die.

Ty is a young man, whose facility with a gun gets him into as much trouble as it gets him out of. He’s also learned to be pretty quick with a lie. Unfortunately, he lacks similar experience with women. In Short Cut, New Mexico, he’s in trouble. Big trouble. Some of it is the kind where his gun won’t help. Everyone is a stranger and every time he makes a friend, he loses one. Who can he trust?

The sheriff and the sheriff’s wife seem honest, but her uncle is the richest man in town, and he’s determined to own it all. His daughter is as spoiled as she is beautiful. She’s got Ty’s attention. Is she just another trap? And what about the strange woman he met in the saloon? What’s her story, and does Ty fit into it? Add in the jealousy of the second richest man, his spoiled son, a cheerful Mexican ranch foreman, a gang of the deadliest-looking cowhands anybody ever saw, stir well, and watch as Ty tries to avoid winding up with the wrong woman, or on the wrong end of a gun.

Excellent debut. A fast-paced western with good guys, bad guys, pretty women, and all the fixin's. The book takes an interesting approach to dialog and dialect, and it took me a few pages to fall into the rhythm. I loved a surprising reveal that I did not see coming. I'd pick nits over some punctuation and a couple typos, but none of that made me stop reading; it's a page-turner. I look forward to reading more installments in the series.

I like characters that move me. I don't want to go through horrific scenes with the characters I have come to love. This book didn't disappoint. Funny and uplifting, despite the body count, Short Cut left me feeling satisfied and glad more books were coming.
