This epic story of the Russian-German Mennonite exodus from the Ukraine during WW II won the California Literature Silver Medal Award in 1977. The author has revised the original published version restoring passages that were edited out so that the edition more clearly reflects her memory of those times.

She has written several novels loosely based upon her own experiences from growing up in a Mennonite community in Ukraine and as a refugee child during World War II. In the 1990s, she became a prominent collaborator of Neo-Nazi and Holocaust denier Ernst Zündel, whom she married in 2001.
