Read this one when i was in college. It was a long fat book. It was really good to read this biography. I am even waiting for Vikram Sampath book on Veer Savarkar. Its always good to know that we have many leaders beside Nehru, Gandhi and Congress. I am sure there are many freedom fighters in each and every state. Hope i come across all those books and get knowledge about them.

If anybody has a disrespect on Veer Savarkar, I recommend reading this book. If you read the cruelty he faced while in Andaman Jail. You will definitely feel his patriotism and the courage.

2.5/5 Firstly, this is an old-fashioned biography by the 'Padma Bhushan' awardee biographer. The author indulges in hero-worship and as in old Bollywood, the hero is 'Rin ki safedi' white and no criticism whatsoever. Also, the major events related of India , say Civil Disobedience, Quit India are altogether ignored or discussed only as Savarkar's reactions. There are also too many unnecessary descriptions of his movements or speeches which r beyond getting tiresome. But, then this was the only biography even worth picking-up probably because the name has become such a taboo unlike Jinnah who enjoys a considerable following in India and abroad.
That reminds me, how do u counter religious fundamentalism of those like Jinnah & co ? Gandhi's appeasement/approach clearly lost and I dont think accomodation works. If Gandhi and Nehru couldnt do it, no-one can. Liberalism shouldnt be a noose by which others hang you. Lets see what Europe does today.
Savarkar's Hindutva reminds me of a term i read recently 'atheist Jew' or 'atheist Zionists' especially bcoz Savarkar was an atheist and strongly against all dogma unlike the religious right that claims him today. Also, found out that the Hindu Mahasabha was instrumental in easing (somewhat) the plight of Hindus in Hyderabad pre-independence. Or that Savarkar's book on 1857 was considered inspirational by people all across the political spectrum and banned by the British. But, finally, if u r not too interested in history, u would want to skip this.

This book is not just the biography of Savarkar, it’s a historic document on first generation Indian revolutionaries who lit the fire of our Indian independent struggle.

t is an OK book. Not great!! But it gives the chronological details of the Savarkar's life. Even it points out his shortcommings but the interpretation of the events, politics of the era and the people is flawed and superficial.
It covers the life of Veer Savarkar the great revolutionary, Father of the Hindutva, a social reformist. a suspect in Gandhi assassination case. all in all a coplicated personality with a great prowess over language and poetry.
The book tells the readers very little about the political atmosphere. society, internal external forces that shaped the politics of the given time. It also doesn't provide the great insights on Hindumahasabha politics. Keer instead wastes the time and space to take jibes, snides at Nehru Gandhi, congress. and glamourizing Savarkar.

The author has a great style of writing and makes this historical narrative interesting to read while presenting a well-researched and thorough biography of Veer Savarkar.

This is a must-read book for people to learn about one of the greatest patriots to have ever lived, Vinayak Savarkar written in a balanced and fair manner.
