Guarding Garrett by R.J. Scott, is part of the Hockey Allies Bachelor Bid series. This is a new to me author. That’s the advantage of a series by all different authors. It’s such a great way to be introduced to new writers.

sexy male hockey player - Google Search

Garrett (Hooly) Howell is one of the most popular players of the Burlington Dragons. He is very active on social media and has a huge following. He is known for his aggressive finesse on the ice and for his kindness off the ice. When Garrett starts receiving threats, it’s evident that he has a stalker. But when he is physically attacked, his team decides it’s time for protection until they can find out who is behind it. Garrett is going to have a bodyguard.

bodyguard guarding a man - Google Search

Jason Dearing is an ex-marine that takes his job protecting his client seriously. He’s bossy, over bearing and oh so sexy. Garrett wants to strangle him one minute and kiss him the next.

“My job, Mr. Howell, is straightforward. I’m the one who will keep you alive.”

These two had me smiling so big. Their banter was so much fun. Their forced proximity and innocent touches wore them both down until neither of them could deny the attraction they felt. But Jason is still on the job and the threat is still real.

I did enjoy this. I always enjoy seeing these big tough guys that have hearts of gold. Jason and Garrett are both dreaming of what could be after they figure out who is behind the threat. As long as they can live long enough to find out.

I look forward to the next book in the series, Loving Layne, by V.L. Lovey.

3.5*

A really solid romance from RJ with a stalker plot that, while I guessed from the out who would be involved, still had enough of a twist to surprise me in the execution.

Personally though, I was lacking a bit of steam to cement the hot chemistry, with only a couple of blow jobs and hot make out sessions on page.

All the other sexual intimacy happens off page which was a shame with all the very present on page UST that was built up.

The forced proximity bodyguard falling for client aspect worked well and I loved the humourous bits which were thrown into the narrative

I liked both MCs and I'm looking forward to seeing them appearing in the other books in this shared world series.

#ARC kindly received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review.

The pacing of this novella felt off. There was barely a romantic blip for the first 50% of the story, then a few off-hand comments or moments, and then POW! all of a sudden our MCs are in love and plotting out a life together - complete with 2.5 kids, a dog, and a picket fence.

3.5 stars After receiving treats from a stalker hockey player Garrett has to accept a bodyguard 24/7
Not willing to give in, he argues everything about the bodyguard who is way to sexy.
Jason is one hell of a super qualified bodyguard. It doesn’t take long to win Garrett’s trust and submission.
Still there is danger around the corner and approaching fast.

A fast paced story, captivating and entertaining, the whole security side was well elaborated. It was enough developed and had a good focus.
I would have loved some more romance and chemistry.
Overall an enjoyable experience.

When Garrett, the star of the Burlington Dragons hockey team's life is threatened, the team forces a bodyguard on him. Jason is handsome and skilled. Obviously they fall in love.

This book did exactly what it said it was going to do. It was short, quick, medium cute, minimum spicy with a thin veneer of hockey on top. I'm looking forward to the rest of the books in this "Bachelor Bid" series as I really liked Garrett's best friend Kyle and am eager to read his book.

~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~

This is a story in the Hockey Allies Bachelor Bids collection - and I am really enjoying having a slew of new books to read with a common theme, but different authors.

A really good hockey story, which combines very smoothly with the bodyguard to lover plot line - there was some proper creepy stalker stuff too, so the need for Jason was real!

Garrett was loathed to accept that he needed a bodyguard in the first place, but as the stakes rise he doesn't have much choice. The inconvenience of having feelings for the man appointed to keep him safe and the rules that keep them apart do not help the situation. We soon realise just how they feel for each other and how hard they resist the temptation. But as the threat is real, timing is key.

Thankfully R.J. Scott knows all about timing, a lot about hockey and gives us the very satisfying story we expected.

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

Hockey star Garrett has a stalker and his team hires sexy Bodyguard Jason to protect him. Jason goes everywhere with Garrett and even moves into his home. Jason insists that Garrett change his routine and turns Garrett's life temporarily upside down.

So is the story a little contrived? Sure. Did I mind? Not a bit. I'm a big fan of M/M ice hockey romances and this one hit the spot. It had danger, romance, sexual tension, hot hockey players and a bit of actually hockey too. Garrett is a real sweetheart and I loved that Jason is a big strong alpha on the outside but a loving guy on the inside.

I spent a cold Sunday afternoon reading Guarding Garrett and I had a great time. It was fun. It is the first book in the Hockey Allies Bachelor Bid series, where each book is written by a different author. I loved this so much I've already purchased the next book in the series.

I was given a copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

This is a sexy hockey romance with a stalker storyline that adds some unexpected suspense. Falling for the bodyguard is a total cliche - but it’s a sexy cliche when done right. Sullen hockey player Garrett and his straight laced bodyguard Jason definitely do the storyline justice.

This is definitely my favourite book in the series so far. I love the slow burn chemistry between Garrett and Justin and I loved the suspense element introduced as Garrett’s stalker escalates. It is a light, easy read with a little bit of angst, great hockey action and some steamy scenes between the two men.

RJ Scott always writes hockey well. Fans of Scott’s Railers and Raptors series will enjoy this book as a standalone and it is a good introduction to the author for new readers.

I really enjoyed this, but I am a huge sucker for hockey M/M stories.
Garrett is receiving death threats and his team decides to hire a bodyguard for him. He is really not happy with the idea, especially since he is really attracted to his bodyguard. Jason and Garrett work together really well and their connection gradually builds. Once it built, though, they went quickly to madly in love. This had no angst of the relationship variety (which made me happy). I kind of guessed the culprit behind all the threats early on, but it was still intriguing enough where I didn’t guess all of the details. This was really enjoyable. Garrett and Jason were adorable together.

This is one of the novellas where the balance isn't right for me, because I really like external plot, and that happens largely offpage. Also, there were some really fast emotional turns (again, something that happens in novella pacing) that didn't gel for me.

This was a quick, easy read. The mystery was good but the conclusion didn't surprise me. I liked the romance and I really liked the MCs... Garrett & Jason but I would have liked a bit more steam where they were concerned and I don't mean more on page sex, I mean more sexual tension.

Looking forward to the rest of this series.

Another body guard, but this time ex-military man, Jason, is protecting a hockey player (I actually read this before Pop Star).

This seems to move very fast, but the boys are lovely together and the attraction is strong.

The climax is tense, but because it's trying to keep the secrets about the other couples yet to come, it has gaps and comes across a bit disjointed. But that means the other books might be highly anticipated.

Enjoyed it.

I really missed Jason’s POV because his feelings came out of nowhere. There was zero chemistry before he confessed how he felt. The time they spend together (f.i the cooking) happens off page.
I guessed who was behind everything fairly quickly so no surprise there.

Sweet romance,great series

Rating: 3.5🌈

I’ve sort of been skipping around this wonderful contemporary collection of LGBTGIA+ hockey romances by various authors, reading one, and then forgetting to come back to it until I see a title that jars my sieve-like memory.

Guarding Garrett (Hockey Allies Batchelor Bid Romance #1) by R.J. Scott is actually the first in this collection by five authors.

The series hits so many of the elements I love, hockey romances, various tropes from mystery (here) to second chances at love, and much more. An absolutely terrific smorgasbord of hot men on ice and true love.

Guarding Garrett , is as the title indicates, about a top level, highly skilled and popular hockey player on the fictional NHL Burlington Dragons hockey team. Garrett “Hooley” Howell has been getting threatening texts, packages and more, until the team decides to get a bodyguard to protect him until they can investigate who’s behind the threats to their highly valuable player.

That’s a believable plot given the extent of the media most players engage in with the public and their fans. Stalkers are reported on daily.

Garrett and Jason develop great chemistry over the course of their time together. I enjoyed watching their relationship move from an antagonistic stage to one of attraction and friendship. The instant love was perhaps less realistic for me as I felt the story didn’t give us or them enough layers or time from stage one tension/rejection through to the “I Iove you” statements.

These aren’t long books so the author has crammed a lot into a shorter length. In addition to a full romance, there’s the mystery of the stalker and a full blown suspense-filled event at the end to contend with.

Plus the auction that all the novels have as a center feature.

My other quibble? I lost patience with Garrett’s behavior after Jason Dearing, co-owner of Seamax Security, had been hired. I can understand a certain amount of exasperation at the loss of personal freedom. But, It’s was explained to Garrett his life was in danger. This was a corporate decision. He had said repeatedly, he himself didn’t want to put his job with the team in jeopardy. Yet here he was making his bodyguard’s job incredibly difficult. Acting like a immature juvenile over a decision made by your team, your team owner, that impacts your career.

Which Garrett acknowledged. While not stopping.

It made me less invested in this character because I couldn’t relate to this element. Garrett Howell is a top NHL hockey player, one who’s owners have built a team around him. He’s respected. He’s supposed to be a highly talented, disciplined athlete. Someone used to a highly restricted diet, a long training schedule, with the ability to adhere to that tight regimen for years to achieve a goal. Yet here he’s whining like a toddler over supervision for several days to save his life.

A case needed to be made for that mentality by the author and I don’t think it was. A few mentions of a broken family until he was sent to Kyle Pressgroves’ family to live as a young hockey player. But that’s not enough history to excuse pages of frankly poor behavior.

Luckily, the behavior stopped and I could start appreciating Garrett from another perspective.

Despite some aspects of the story I found issues with, it’s fast moving, the main characters have excellent chemistry, and it’s has a satisfactory HEA.

No hockey however really. I do missed my “on the ice” scenes.

Kyle is part of this story as he’s Garrett’s best friend. His story is Keeping Kyle #3 by Jeff Adams. I’ve listed them all below.

They make for wonderful hockey romance reading. I’m recommending this and them.

🔹Guarding Garrett #1 by RJ Scott
🔹Loving Layne #2 by VL Locey
🔹Keeping Kyle #3 by Jeff Adams

**********Contains Spoilers**********

I’ve been a fan of RJ Scott’s since I was recommended one of her books through Amazon back in 2020, and have read pretty much all her books but I’ve never gotten around to posting a review so here goes. I’ve decided to re-read all her books again that are currently sitting in my Kindle Library so I can review them, including this book. I enjoyed this book and thought that Garrett and Jason were great together, the s*xual tension and chemistry was off the charts, as well as hot as hell.

Just like Garrett I enjoyed seeing snippets of Jason’s sense of humour poke through on the very odd occasion. Garrett is and out and proud hockey player for a fictional NHL team the Burlington Dragons, he’s got a stalker and he’s not happy that the Dragon’s Organisation have hired him a bodyguard. He’s not happy at all about having a bodyguard for most of the book. Yes, he has a right to hate having his life disrupted by having a bodyguard follow him, but he takes his anger out of Jason which he doesn’t deserve at all.

Garrett is also acting stupid considering how many times Jason has told him what could happen to him, like a sn*per on the roof etc. I think a lot Garrett’s anger at Jason is because he infuriates him, most likely because Garrett finds himself attracted to the man which is most likely messing with his head, as well as Jason being all up in his grill and telling him all the possible ways someone can hurt him, so Garrett is scared of his shadow. I would’ve liked seeing Garrett’s stalker caught, as well as the person responsible for hiring the thug, instead of just being told that the people/persons’ responsible have been caught, and the reason behind everything.

I liked meeting Kyle, who Garrett considers a brother/best friend, as he billeted with Kyle’s family when he was 15 years old. He’s considered them family since then. He loves Kyle, Mama P (Kyle’s mum) and Bobby (Kyle’s brother). I’m looking forward to reading more books from this series, as all of Garrett’s WhatsApp Chat Group of Gay Hockey Players find their happily ever afters. I’m also looking forward to reading more books from RJ Scott. I’d definitely recommend this book and author to everyone.

Brilliant!

Now I could leave it at that because it sums it up pretty perfectly but I'll say a little more😉. First, I'll reiterate what I said when I reviewed VL Locey's series entry, Loving Layne: I was expecting something completely different with a series titled Hockey Allies Bachelor Bid, but oh how these are better than what my brain imagined.

Bodyguards. Danger. Stalker. Sarcastic hockey player. Humor. Drama. Romance. Most importantly there's plenty of heart. I can't forget heat, after all it is RJ Scott and she does heat and heart best, not too much, not too little, perfect balance for my taste.

As for Garrett and Jason. Well, Garrett is typical in that he's reluctant to accept the bodyguard and his restrictions. Now I say "typical" not because it's cliche and been done to death but because I think it's a typical reaction that most of us would have as well. As for Jason, he too is probably the typical bodyguard faced with having to convince the one in need of protection that the danger is real. Together their chemistry is off the charts, push and pull that makes it yummy from the getgo.

For those who think Guarding Garrett sounds like a gay hockey version of the movie The Bodyguard, Jason himself says at one point "I'm not Kevin Costner". Truth is, as someone who absolutely loves that movie and knows it by heart, Guarding Garrett is so much better.

For those asking about series order, well I have only read books one and two(and I read two first), they are standalones. The charity auction is the connection and as the MC hockey players are friends they have minor cameos but no it's not a must to read in order. I will say that Garrett seemed to express a bit more passionately how important the auction was more than Layne, as it's book one in the series but I don't think that changes my opinion on reading order necessity, just thought I'd mention it though.

I don’t think I was adequately prepared for the adrenaline rushes in this story. I mean, I’ve read RJ’s Lancaster Falls series and I know how she writes suspense, right? Wrong! This was a brand-new level of creepy suspense and I loved every minute of it.

In addition to the over-arcing story, these characters . . . . *SWOON*. Garrett is a 27-year-old hockey player with a strong social media presence whose fans have never gotten past his posing for the ESPN Body Issue when he was 20 (Makes you wish the books came with photos, no?!) So, aside from the comic relief the imagery of fans throwing hippos on the ice creates, there are ample examples of RJ Scott’s knowledge and love of hockey to enjoy. There’s a few funny one-liners about the Canadian character (which, as a Canadian, I adored) and a lot of scenes showing how obsessed Garrett is with hockey that I loved. The back-story of him growing up in foster care, and his close relationship with his billet family adds depth to this amazing story.

Then there’s Jason. As calm and cool as you’d expect a bodyguard to be, as well as displaying an intimidating presence that was sizzling, but still showing his vulnerable parts in adorable ways.

To add to the enjoyment, the story occurs in a world where there are several out NHL hockey players and that is very much the world I want to live in. A place where everyone can be attracted to whomever they like and it’s not even a plot-point.

Once again, RJ Scott proves why she lives at the top of my Must-Buy List.

I loved this addition to the series. I wouldn’t want to go up against Jason who totally knows his stuff. I was impressed by the warnings and information he gave Garrett, and to be honest a little scared. The author has done her research on the subject, and it shows.

I liked the friendship between Garrett and Kyle and enjoyed seeing it from the opposite side, after already read Kyle’s story. I love series where characters pop in and out of each other’s books. I’m also enjoying the year later check ins with everyone from the auction and seeing where these guys are at then, yet not giving away the HEA of any of the other books. Very nicely done.

Although I guessed who was behind the stalker, it didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the story as I quickly got caught up in Garrett and Jason’s growing relationship, and learning more about both of them. I enjoyed seeing them both learning about the other, and their attraction and determination not to give in to that attraction. Kyle’s assessment of that made me smile.

The scene where the stalker ups his game is exciting and showed loud and clear how much these guys have come to mean to each other.

Another fabulous read from a favourite author.

A bodyguard and hockey combo story? What more could I ask for!

RJ Scott writes fantastic romantic suspense stories. She also writes fantastic hockey stories, and stories that make my tears fall when there are sad and happy times. She writes great stories, period.

Guarding Garrett combines the best of two worlds – hockey and bodyguards. Garrett is being stalked and at first, he won't admit that he has a problem. When things escalate and his team finds out, they hire Jason as protection for him.

There's a lot of sexual tension in this story and it's a bit of a slow-burn as nothing sexual happens between them until about two-thirds of the way into the book. But all of the suspense with the threats to Garrett's life definitely kept me engrossed in the story. And when things heat up between Jason and Garrett? Yum!

I truly had no idea who the bad guy was going to be until all was revealed. Guarding Garrett was a great book to kick off this series of related stories that can each be read as standalone books.

A copy of this book was provided to me but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.

RJ Scott's Guarding Garrett is not the typical hockey romance. Part of the multi-author Hockey Allies Bachelor Bid series, this one is a delightful bodyguard romance.

Garrett's a hockey player who's getting death threats, leaving him no choice but to get a bodyguard. Enter Jason, who's hired to protect him.

Their story is one of frustration, attraction, heat, and longing. They can only resist so long, adding to the fun.

The stalker story is well done, definitely giving off an eerie factor at times. It's a good plot device, keeping the need for separation throughout.

Told in first person pov, the reader is easily brought into the feelings of both characters. And these two have emotions in spades, including an impressive first kiss scene. The author entertains with plenty of humor sprinkled in as well.

As an avid fan of sports romances, for me it doesn't get much better than an RJ Scott hockey romance. Add in the bodyguard factor and Guarding Garrett is an awesome read. And just when you think you're done, you can move onto the next book, Loving Lane, by VL Locey!

This series Hockey Allies Bachelor Bid has such great authors and this book by RJ Scott is fantastic!!! Garrett is a professional hockey player but someone is out to get him, he doesn’t take the little things seriously until the team hires a bodyguard for him. He thinks it’s nothing, blown out of proportion. Jason knew as soon as he met Garrett he was in trouble, not necessarily the threat against the man but his heart was in trouble.

Spending time together, it was a rough start, Garrett didn’t want to give up his routine, his freedom but Jason wasn’t going to give the stalker chances on his watch. The All-Star game, the auction, and this threat hanging over his head but Jason is there for every freak out, every question, to guide him, making him feel safe and secure. When they finally kiss, holy hockey sticks it goes from hot to explosive. Can they make it work once the threat is neutralized? Such a great story, intense, laughs, friendship, hockey and so much love in such a short time but when you know, you know he’s the one, grab on and don’t let go!!

Hot hockey player + hot bodyguard is always going to be a win for me! (The cover is perfect for the description of Garrett). This is a quick sweet-ish read. I wish it had been dual POV because I really wanted to be in Jason’s head. I also would have liked it to be a little longer so we could have had more time with them together – maybe even witnessed their first real date! And with the tease of the family Christmas hockey game, how could we not have seen Jason take Garrett home for Christmas and shock his family with a new teammate??

I do like them together. Garrett’s fun-loving, playful personality is the perfect balance to Jason’s intense, serious one. Their attraction was obvious even without knowing what was going on in Jason’s head. He was overly protective of Garrett and more invested than an unbiased, uncaring bodyguard would have been.

Kyle – Garrett’s best friend – has a book in this series (not really a series) and I’m going to read that one next! I love the concept of this series, especially now that we’re not getting to watch my favorite sport!

Garrett is a hockey player with the Burlington Dragons. He's the face of the team and is very involved in the LGBTQ community. He's has a stalker and is getting gifts that are set to rattle him. After being attacked, the Dragons managers and owner decide to hire a bodyguard. In steps Jason an ex-marine turned bodyguard, who's all business. As the stalking gets more intense, Garrett is getting more worried and scared. It's affecting his hockey game and social commitments. Just before the charity bachelor auction it all comes to a head and the stalker is unveiled.

This was a short read. The all business situation to lovers was a little fast. There wasn't as much chemistry between the 2 MC's that would make falling in love fast believable. I guessed the bad guy from the get go. The stalking was bad but not scary or intense. It's written as an intense/scary book but I just didn't feel it. The book needed a better editing job. It has way too many run-on sentences. Otherwise it was an easy, fast read.

(4 stars)

When Garrett, the face of the Burlington Dragons hockey team, starts to receive weird gifts he is in denial about being stalked. When other stuff, bigger stuff, starts to happen the team steps in and gets him a bodyguard. Against his wishes, Garrett has to be nice to Jason and is pretty much ordered to make sure that Jason is with him at all times... not that Jason even gives Garrett the opportunity to not be in his sight. For Garrett his focus has always been hockey, and he never thought that it would be any other way.. until now. Jason is now almost his every thought, and even though he thinks he hides it well, Jason has realized it and made it clear that he is also feeling the pull. Can Jason break the first rule of being a bodyguard?

In a super quick, but entertaining read, RJ Scott pulls us in with Jason and Garrett's story. I ended up really enjoying this story and give this 4 stars.
