About the author

Dr. Osamu Tezuka (手塚治虫) was a Japanese manga artist, animator, producer and medical doctor, although he never practiced medicine. Born in Osaka Prefecture, he is best known as the creator of Astro Boy and Kimba the White Lion. He is often credited as the "Father of Anime", and is often considered the Japanese equivalent to Walt Disney, who served as a major inspiration during his formative years. His prolific output, pioneering techniques, and innovative redefinitions of genres earned him such titles as "the father of manga" and "the God of Manga."

'Adolf' is another great graphic novel from the acclaimed manga artist Osamu Tezuka (liked his Buddha earlier). It is in five parts and tells the story of three people named Adolf and how their destinies are intertwined. One of them is expectedly Adolf Hitler, the other two are Adolf Kauffman, the son of a Nazi officer and Adolf Kamil, son of a Jewish baker. Both Kauffman and Kamil spend their childhoods is Japan and grow to be close friends. Their paths are separated when Kauffman is forcefully sent by his father to join Hitler youth. With time, he is groomed into a ruthless Nazi and becomes one of Hitler's trusted associates. Kamil, on the other hand is drawn into the Jewish resistance of which his father is also a part. The story also traces a mysterious document which is related to the origins of Hitler, something that can bring down the Nazi regime. There are many important characters in the plot. Among them Sohei Toge, a reporter is another main protagonist, who finally writes this whole memoir. The imagery is impactful, especially the expression of human emotions and the devastations of war (World War II).

There are a lot of things to take back from this work, the uncanny similarity with our present for one. It shows how the young were brainwashed into hating Jews from an early age, in the Hitler schools; how the persecution of Jews was normalized. It also shows how a 'larger than life' image was created for Adolf Hitler, which he himself believed in, till the end. There are a lot of such aspects, which would ring a bell for a conscious reader.

This has the traditional style of manga, which is to be read from right to left. It is not that difficult, once one gets used to it. This was my final read for 2020 or rather the last book completed. Certainly a memorable one. (less)

Continua la ricerca dei documenti segreti. Siamo ormai nel 1944, Il figlio del colonnello Honda cerca di tramettere il plico, ma la rete di spie di Ramsey viene smantellata.
Intanto, in Germania, Adolf Kaufmann continua a far carriera nella SD, fino a quando rifiuta l'incarico di uccidere Rommel. L'unica sua possibilità di riscatto sarà tornare in Giappone..

Com o adensar da trama, a história torna-se mais interessante. Por qualquer razão, gostei mais deste volume que dos anteriores, e daí classificá-lo com 4 estrelas (em vez das 3 que dei aos volumes anteriores). Adolf Kaufmann começa a ser atormentado pelas acções que comete, mas não mostra sinais de remorsos. Interessante essa dicotomia numa personagem que se tornou num vilão sem que estivéssemos necessariamente à espera (ao contrário das restantes personagens, que nos são apresentadas de forma mais maniqueísta e novelesca...).
O quinto e último volume promete!

Hace rato no me pasaba de tener que tomar un respiro tras una escena brutal. Desde incendiar un vagón lleno de gente a patear a una criatura por llorar a sus padres recién ejecutados. Apunta a un final aún mas dramático.
Para ser editado por Planeta, sorprende la cantidad de errores en la traducción.

La storia comincia a volgersi verso la sua conclusione, che non potrà che essere tragica per due motivi:
- la Storia è data, e Hitler si suiciderà nel suo bunker a Berlino quindi i documenti non potranno saltare fuori che al termine del conflitto
- ad Adolf Kaumann viene dato il compito di uccidere Shogei Toge, che però sappiamo essere diventato il suo patrigno

Sento che il finale sarà al cardiopalma!

Osamu Tezuka, ao ser apresentado por estar terras ocidentais, sempre é comparado a um Walt Disney do Japão - esteve na vanguarda do mangá e do anime, contribuido na construção de uma estética e de uma difusão antes inexistentes dessa arte, além de ter construido uma carreira prolífica e de inúmeros sucessos. Em suma, cunhou uma indústria. Porém, excetuando sua igual abordagem a temas universais como em Disney, mergulhou em águas bem mais profundas, sem pudor em relação a temas políticos, sexuais, violentos ou religiosos. Adolf, um de seus últimos trabalhos, exemplifica bem isso.
Partindo da exigência de desenvolver uma aventura policial em uma revista semanal, de uma concepção sua de dividir a trama em torno de três Adolfs diferentes na 2a Guerra Mundial (um judeu alemão vivendo no Japão, um nazista alemão de descendência mista japonesa e, por último, o próprio Fuhrer) e de um boato antigo, mas que foi confirmado através de testes de DNA em agosto deste ano, sobre a ascendência judia de Hitler, Tezuka cria uma trama épica de mais de 1.000 páginas.
Histórias e vinganças pessoais se entrecruzam, em meio a paranóia, perseguição, tortura, violência e amores tornados quase impossíveis num cenário pintado com essas tintas. E Tezuka não se acanha em ser explícito em nenhum momento, fazendo mais do que jus à insanidade da época e às atrocidades então praticadas. Sempre da perspectiva japonesa, mas sem perder o âmbito mundial da Guerra e a perspectiva de outros países, especialmente da própria Alemanha, personagens e relações surgem e se extinguem em um pequeno apanhado de páginas e qualquer possibilidade de sobrevivência parece ameaçada por forças agindo sobre quaisquer que sejam as outras forças, baixas ou altas.
Alguns encadeamentos e desfechos narrativos ficam pelo caminho, ao final, pelo fato de a revista ter sido publicada menos do que o previsto, mas isso não chega a prejudicar em nada a obra, que tem uma força tão ampla quanto um coquetel molotov - em sua mistura de perspectivas, raças e situações - se esparramando e minando qualquer tipo de Justiça proclamada e estendendo-se até uma genial inversão dos papéis trágicos da história, com o clímax se passando na ocupação israelense da Palestina e dos crimes então praticados pelos judeus contra os árabes. "Palestina - Uma Nação Ocupada" e outros quadrinhos-reportagens de Joe Sacco sobre a Faixa de Gaza são boas leituras posteriores a esta, para quem quiser começar a se aprofundar tanto nessas questões quanto no que há de melhor nessas terras sem fronteiras que são os quadrinhos!

Todo es complejo y las distintas situaciones que plantea la historia parecieran no tener una solución.
Los documentos que podrían acabar con Adolf Hitler y por los que tanto ha luchado Sohei Toge, por los que han muerto otros tantos y que estuvieron bajo custodia de la señorita Ogi, de Adolf Kamil y de Yoshio Honda, quien encontró un terrible destino mientras intentaba hacerlos llegar al contacto final: Ramsey, un espía ruso que los haría público; están desaparecidos.
Esta red de espías intencionales es descubierta y desmantelada por la policía japonesa

22 de julio de 1941, Alemania por fin da el paso y lanza un ataque contra la Unión Soviética. Japón entra oficialmente en guerra con los Estados Unidos con el ataque a Pearl Harbor el 7 de diciembre de 1941.
Adolf Kaufman asciende rápidamente en su carrera militar nazi gracias a su crueldad, y, tiempo después regrese a Japón en un estado mental lamentable, lleno de culpas y remordimientos.

Osamu Tezukan laadukkaan sarjakuvan neljännessä osassa keskeisenä teemana ovat nationalistisen ajattelutavan ja militarismin nurjat puoli. Fiktio sekoittuu entistä voimakkaammin faktaan: aikaisemmista osista tuttujen henkilöiden tiet risteävät muun muassa neuvostoliittolaisten laskuun vakoilleen Richard Sorgen kanssa, joka lähettämillään tiedoilla oli omalta osaltaan aiheuttamassa natsi-Saksan tappioita. Adolf Kauffman joutuu puolestaan tekemisiin Hitleriä vastaan suunnattun salaliiton kanssa kanssa ja päätyy lopulta Japaniin, jossa viha, rakkaus ja muut ihmissuhteisiin liittyvät tunteet mutkistavat tilannetta entisestään.

Cerita di jilid kali ini sebenarnya kelanjutan dari pencarian Sachi Honda di jilid 3 yang sayangnya berujung tragis dan agak menggantung. Kemudian cerita berlanjut ke kembali bertemunya Nyonya Kauffman & Touge dan bagaimana kelanjutan kisah Adolff Kauffman di Jerman. Somehow dua cerita tadi, yang mungkin kita ngga akan duga, jadi nyambung di akhir cerita.

Al momento el tomo que mas me ha gustado, creo que el autor, con ciertas licencias artísticas para remarcar personajes, narra de manera muy interesante el desarrollo de la segunda guerra mundial. La trama se complica y hay escenarios muy buenos, por ejemplo la guerra psicológica dentro de un submarino, que es clave para el desarrollo de la historia.

Tot nu se ridica la nivelul unei lecturi de calitate in primul rand datorita lipsei de veridicitate a evenimentelor si personajelor reale si, in al doilea rand, datorita multiplelor hiatusuri in evolutia povetii.

Osamu Tezuka’s “Adolf”-saga reaches is dramatic pinnacle with this penultimate volume. “The Half-Aryan” was already strong, multilayered stuff, but “Days of Infamy” delves into the horrific reality of the Third Reich even more effectively. This is dark, claustrophobic stuff, always connected to actual, terrible history of the holocaust.

I started with the fourth book in the series and even though it could be read alone I went back to the beginning. I was impressed like everyone else. I've never read a manga book and reading this series was not a disappointed.
