Slater Knox is known around the league as the tough enforcer for the Buffalo Bedlam. His popular social media accounts and open relationship with the fans have made him one of the most beloved players in hockey. They've also earned him a spot in the All-Star game, and an invitation to be a bachelor at a charity auction. For all his living in the spotlight, he's hiding a secret... He's in love with his best friend and keeping quiet grows harder each day. Noah Alzado is the newest addition to the team, and has spent the last few months joined at the hip with his best friend Slater. Slater is everything Noah wants, but won't let himself have. They are best friends, roommates, and teammates, that's three complications too many. Plus, Noah guards his private life as fiercely as Slater shares his own. His best option is to keep his head down, help his team win, and not do anything stupid... like kissing Slater again. Everything comes to a head during All-Star weekend, where the best in the league compete for ultimate bragging rights, and at the auction, where temptation is hot enough to melt the ice. The chemistry between Slater and Noah is scorching, but can they lower their defenses enough to make a play for love?

Scoring Slater, by Susan Scott Shelley, is part of the Hockey Allies Bachelor Bid series, which are a series of five books by five different authors, all M/M Hockey Sports Romances. This is the only one of the five I have read so far. They can all be read as stand alones. I am definitely planning to read the other four books because I enjoyed this one so much!
Noah Alzado is twenty four years old and is new to the Buffalo Bedlam Hockey Team. Noah is a quiet natured, reserved man which you might find unusual for someone that has to be so aggressive on the ice. He shies away from social media and is intensely private.
Slater Knox is twenty three years old and has been with the Bedlam for longer. Slater, with his red hair, is out going, loves to interact with the fans, and loves social media. He shares just about everything he does on line and has a huge following as a result.
Slater and Noah have been best friends for some time so when Noah got traded to the Bedlam, they were thrilled. Now they are best friends, team mates and also room mates. These two men couldn’t be more different. Slater loves his coffee, Noah loves his tea. Slater is happy go lucky, silly even, while Noah is more serious. Somehow, though, it just clicked. So much so that they were both secretly in love with the other. Both afraid to say anything that might jeopardize the closeness they share.
“Slater, warm and caring, was as irresistible as every other version of Slater he’d known over the years. And that was a problem.”
A shared kiss proves that what they have can be so much more. But Noah is still not willing to risk losing Slater if things didn’t work out. But when Slater enters a charity bachelor auction, the thought of anyone else winning him makes him crazy. No matter how much they love each other, though, can they ever find middle ground on their differences? Noah isn’t willing to share every single private moment with the world and Slater thrives on it.
My favorite kind of M/M romance is when both men are strong, equal in their partnership. Noah and Slater were exactly that. One thing I loved about this group was that these men were tough as nails out on the ice, but at home, they had a book club, they were caring and loving with one another. There is nothing sexier than a tough, alpha man who can also be tender and loving.
There is no question that Noah and Slater care about one another. They were adorable together. But can they overcome their differences? Or were they just better off as friends? I hope you’ll grab this and find out the answer. Maybe check out the rest of the series as well.
My first book from this author and I really liked it.
I felt completely justified in cheering for Slater all the way through and wanting to give Noah a wee bit of a shake.
However, I also could understand and sympathise with Noah for his fears and was cheerfully willing him to get his head out of the proverbial and see that he needed to make changes for his own benefit.
A great bunch of secondary characters helped give some depth to the team both men played for and I'll probably look out for the rest of that series of books later.
Really sweet Epilogue and decently steamy narrative gave me all the feels.
#ARC kindly received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review.
This book provided me with a very interesting reading experience.
First off, the premise was uncommon and how differently both characters saw social media was portrayed very well. I'm exactly like Noah, so at times this book gave me anxiety because of how much Slater posted online.
As I saw it, there had to be a resolution that involved compromising, and it sort of was there, but I refuse to believe how easily Noah overcame his issues. It baffled me and, honestly, lacked any credibility. There was a mention of why Slater loved this whole attention, but since it wasn't explored and addresses, I can see him going back to his old ways.
Secondly, some aspects were slightly too cheesy for me, like the tattoo and the collage. Sorry, but that's just too sappy for my taste.
At last, I couldn't help but notice how much "tea" was in this book. The word was used more than 60 times, and when this, and overuse of a certain word, happens, I can't help but get distracted and start counting it. So yeah, that was a problem for me.
Bottom line, I had high hopes for the book, but in the end it didn't work for me. Still, others seem to like it so give it a try.
Let me start by saying, these two men were frustrating as all hell! I wanted to take Slater and Noah and knock their heads together on multiple occasions. While they were both likable and had good chemistry, with their differences in the way they wanted to live their lives in the public eye, I wasn’t sure they’d find a way to compromise, because that’s definitely what they needed most, compromise.
Although, both are out and open about their sexuality, Slater lives for interacting with his fans on social media, by posting numerous pictures and live streams and is willing to talk freely to the press. Noah, on the other hand, is very private about his life and while he loves and appreciates the fans, he wants to keep them out of his private life. I understand both sides. As a fan you want that interaction with celebrities. You want to know what their everyday lives consist of, but I know I couldn’t live my life with cameras in my face and people wanting to know my every move. People often say that’s the price of fame, but there has to be a balance.
I liked both Noah and Slater, and as I said, I understood how each of them felt. The story was good and I enjoyed it, but truthfully, I had a hard time getting into it at first. I found myself picking it up, reading a few paragraphs and then putting it back down again. I’m not sure why, maybe it was me and not the book. Once I got to the halfway mark, it moved better for me and I was able to get into the story better. Still, this was a nice read I’d have no trouble recommending.

Slater and Noah are friends, teammates and share an apartment. They both have strong feelings for each other but neither are sure they should say anything to the other. Slater is very outgoing and very present in social media. Noah is very private and cringes when asked to do anything that may publicly bring attention to himself. These characters were wonderful to meet. I rooted for them, cringed when things went wrong, cheered when they went right, fanned myself when things went REALLY right and was sad when things spiraled so horribly. But the boys figured things out. These men had to figure out what was important in their lives. A little give and take and Noah had to get out of his own way. I loved this story a great deal. Wonderful characters and support characters as well. As in all the previous books in this series, we are given a fantastic story. 5/5 Comic books
Slater Knox and Noah Alzado are best friends, roommates, teammates and...secretly in love with each other. Neither is willing to admit it to the other for fear of ruining what they already have..until one night Noah does the stupid thing of kissing Slater.
I honestly really enjoyed this book. This might be my favorite in the Hockey Allies Bachelor Bid collection. The boys have to deal with their differences and it feels real.
I really liked this one and, if the rest of the Buffalo Bedlam series wasn't mostly M/F I would read the whole series (I'm from Buffalo!).
Good characters with Depth and passion. Good editing and Beta readers. I appreciated that their were no easy answers. Kept my interest. I wanted more of these two men.
I really enjoyed this sexy, M/M hocky romance! This opposites attract story kept me turning the pages.
Slater and Noah are best friends, teammates, and roommates. Slater is outgoing, loves putting everything on social media. Noah is very private and shies away from anything public.
When feelings grow stronger and chemistry gets hotter, one thing leads to another, a sexy kiss happens...then things get complicated.
When neither of them are willing to compromise, their relationship struggles. They both frustrated me, but in a good way. I was rooting for them so hard. The love they had for each other was obvious, but they just needed to do something about it.
I adored Slater and Noah. Their friendship was the sweetest, their bond strong, their passion hot. Their teammates were equally awesome. I loved that these big, hockey-playing hunks get together once a month for book club. Doesn’t that scream sexiness??
I’m so glad I squeezed this story in. It’s part of the Hockey Allies Bachelor Bid series, which is five books by five different authors. I Would definitely love to check out the other books.
This was a new-to-me author, I look forward to reading more from her!
~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~
This is a story in the Hockey Allies Bachelor Bids collection - and I am really enjoying having a slew of new books to read with a common theme, but different authors.
Here we have two men living as flatmates, playing NHL hockey together and both openly gay, both falling for each other ... but neither admitting it, in case it spoils everything else. Once again it is the bachelor auction which serves as the pivotal point in the potential relationship. I loved how we got to know them first, and the video done as a promo was a lovely fun touch too. Once things did move forward I could have done with a more evenhanded compromise, but I did find it believable given Noah's nature.
The camaraderie between the whole team was lovely to see, and let's be frank ... a book club? Dreamy, or what!
I was given a copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.
This is a sweet and sexy hockey romance. It’s the story of two best friends and NHL teammates who are secretly in love with each other.
The best moments in this book are at the beginning - the bromance between Slater, a goon and social media darling, and Noah, his private, intellectual roommate is funny and sweet and very sexy. As their relationship becomes more complicated, there’s a little bit too much emotional angst for my taste and the HEA compromises are disappointingly one sided. However, Slater and Noah are both very loveable characters and this is an easy, entertaining read.
Susan Scott Shelley is a new author for me and I really enjoyed their writing style. I look forward to reading more from this author.
Huston we (might) have a problem...I was loving Noah and Slater up to 75% of the book. That's when the problem started for this couple and I didn't like how Slater handled everything. I felt like he wanted and expected Noah to just change instantly. I felt bed for Noah and due to him this story is getting light 4* rating.
Overall I was enjoying this story and It was a nice wrap up to my week filled with (only) MM stories to read.

1.5 stars because I finished it. This was... bad. Cheesy, sappy, cloying bad. Badly needs an editor bad.
I enjoyed the premise but not the execution nor the characters. Slater, one of the MCs, is a manchild who stomps over his friend's boundaries and overshares online. He is not likeable at all. Noah is... not much at all. He never speaks up about his boundaries and has tantrums that leave him hot and cold with who is supposed to be his best friend / partner.
Slater Knox is an enforcer for the Buffalo Bedlam. He's the king of social media. His life is an open book to his adoring fans. He's been invited to a charity bachelor auction and he's looking at it as a way to get donations for the LGBTQ community and maybe find someone to take his mind off Noah Alzado: his BFF, roommate, teammate and the guy he's secretly in love with. Noah is the new guy on the team. He's been Slater's bestfriend for years and now they're teammates and roommates. Noah is a very private guy and he's avoids the media like the plague. He only answers questions about the game and that's it. Oh and he's also secretly in love with Slater.
So how can these two polar opposites find a middle ground? They both want such different things and yet they want each other.
At the charity auction Noah can't let anyone else have Slater, so he out bids everyone else in grand fashion. They leave the auction and go to Slater's room to talk; although, not much talking is done. The next day the grand gesture Noah displayed at the auction is all over social media. Slater takes it in stride but Noah starts to pull away. These two try to have a relationship but find that they aren't happy and not making the other happy either. Maybe it's best to stop before they can't even be friends anymore.
Neither guy is handling being alone at all. Noah gets some good advice from his teammates and book club friends that he takes to heart (literally). Noah has to decide if he wants to live a stifled life or does he want to change to keep what's most important to him. Slater has to decide if living every minute of his life online is more important than Noah. Can these two actually give enough to make a relationship work and still be true to themselves?
This is a well written book without any noticeable errors. It read smoothly and was able to keep my attention through one sitting. Noah and Slater have good chemistry and the supporting characters are all well placed in the story. I would have liked a little more heat and maybe more bedroom time, opposed to tension filled pages but I do think this is worth the read.

Review: This was a nice, feel good read. The relationship between Slater and Noah moves from friends to more when Slater participates in a bachelor auction. Now the men need to figure out how to be willing to listen and compromise. Noah does the most growth as he has a bit more to deal with, but Slater grows as well. The way the author resolves things for them was handled well. The writing style was very easy to read and you can easily connect to the characters. The pacing of the story was good.
I can't imagine two people more opposite when it comes to their stance on privacy. Slater is open with his fans on social media and Noah keeps things close at hand, not wanting to rock the boat. Perhaps it's one of the things that make them best friends, opposites attract in love and sometimes opposites attract in friendship.
Both men want the same thing: each other but they also don't want to lose the friendship, both on and off the ice. Taking that step is one of the hardest things either has possibly ever faced. Watching them figure it out is heartwarming, the whole tough on the ice and tender at home really works for me. Don't get me wrong, there were times I wanted to shake them, knock their heads together but that's what makes this story work. They each have faults, they each have pluses and together they can be magic, if they let themselves and for that final answer you'll have to read Scoring Slater for yourself.
Susan Scott Shelley is not entirely a new author for me, I read a short story in a holiday collection a couple of years ago, recalling that short and Scoring I look forward to more. If you haven't read her before than Scoring Slater is a great intro to a new author.
I really liked this, short as it was, and a new to me author. Buuut I have a huge problem with the premise of this book. I'm very pissed about it, also. So, rant and spoilers ahead!
Why is it always the introvert that has to make all the sacrifices?! Why didn't Slater get a lecture from his friends that he is maybe oversharing "a little"?! Why didn't he ask or just tell the person he is in love with for years and knows has a problem with social media about the stupid reality show?! Why didn't he back up all the "protector" talk with action?! Noah just wanted privacy and had to splatter his whole life on social media numerous times in order to prove to Slater that he loves him? Why? Why was he in the wrong and everybody treated him as paranoid? He has every right to be cautious. Slater did not sacrifice anything for the relationship and did not think of a compromise. He didn't even really refuse the reality show. "Total creative control", yeah, right. I don't get it. Anyways...not a bad book.
Slater is a social media junkie. Noah is not. Both are falling in love. One wants to post on social media. The other one wants to tell no one. For every step forward by Slater, Noah takes two steps back to the point that Slater moves out of their shared home. Of course there is a hea but it took work to get there! I love the book club Slater, Noah and their hockey friends do once a month
This story will make you laugh with Noah and Slater, cheer at their friendship, soar with their love and cry at their struggle to become what each other wants at the cost of themselves and yet still be who they are, Emotional and heartfelt moments that steal your heart! Exceptional storytelling!
Slater and Noah are teammates, roommates and best friends but it takes Slater being up for the Bachelor auction to get Noah to admit his feelings but the path the happiness is rocky for these two
so the moral is "if you don't want your every move on socmed you need to relax, you stick in the mud"?? yikes. and no celebrity would be posting their whereabouts WHILE STILL THERE. NOBODY SHOULD. its dangerous and stupid
This is the first book I've read by this author, but based in this one I think I'll be checking out their other m/m stories, especially as they seem to be connected to the same guys on the team. This was a really enjoyable, fun read to fill a couple of hours. Overall the guys were really cute together, especially when they acted naturally around each other. Once the pressure of a possible relationship reared its head they seemed to forget their comfortable behaviour around each other and became extremes of their incompatible selves. And this is where Slater in particular annoyed me on occasions. Being Noah's best friend meant he should have known how Noah would react to certain situations and yet he seemed surprised when he sprung a particular opportunity on him days after they finally got together and Noah reacted badly. I did think Noah was a little naive for a hockey star and his expectations around social media. Loved the collection of friends they have around them (obviously people from previous books) and how supportive they were over the various stages of the relationship. This tale is one of taking a step away from a comfortable relationship and risking it all on the romance, and these two certainly do that. But this is Romance with a captial R and that HEA is there in full force. The epilogue, in particular is lovely. There's enough hockey action to please fans but not so much to be off putting to people who don't follow the game. I'll definitely be checking out more by this author.
Slater and Noah are best friends, teammates, and also roommates. Their day to day life is pretty much done together; they have a routine, they know each others likes and dislikes. What they have is a relationship without the romantic aspect. So much so, that when a moment changes things, with Slater wanting more and Noah denying that request, Noah can't lose what he and Slater had. Now, Slater is going to be in that bachelor auction and it kills Noah that there may be someone else to take his place. Is his playing it safe going to cost him Slater in the long run? Should he man up and take the risk?
Slater and Noah's story was a good one; giving us some nice naughty bits, really good drama, a cast of supporting characters that make you wonder if they have books. This reels you in and keeps you hooked as you watch friends turn into lovers and has you hoping that they can stand the tests that get thrown at them. I give this 4 stars.
Scoring Slater is Susan Scott Shelley's contribution to the multi author Hockey Allies Bachelor Bid series. And it's awesome!
Slater and Noah are just perfect for each other. Friends, roommates, and lovers. Swoon. Just swoon! I love everything about it. The closeness of these men. The apartment interview. The auction. And of course, the wonderfulness that follows.
My first time reading this author, I am intrigued, extremely interested in reading more of her works. The writing style is soothing, characters are fascinating, and the humor is great.
Scoring Slater is a quick, sweet read. I am just giddy about this story. A complete sucker for friends to lovers, this book is simply delicious. Basically, read this book if you love hockey romances like I do!
As for the series, each book can be read as a standalone, but reading them in order adds to the fun.
The was a great combination of hockey and romance!
