Sometimes the best holidays are the ones you least expect...
After a long and turbulent year, Sarah is dreaming of the five-star getaway her sister has booked them on. White sands, cocktails, massages, the Caribbean is calling to them.
But the sisters turn up to tatty beaches, basic wooden shacks, a compost toilet and outdoor cold water showers. It turns out that at the last minute Amy decided a conservation project would be much more fun than a luxury resort.
So now Sarah's battling mosquitos, trying to stomach fish soup and praying for a swift escape. Life on a desert island though isn't all doom and gloom. They're at one with nature, learning about each other and making new friends. And Sarah is distracted by the dishy, yet incredibly moody, island leader she’s sure is hiding a secret.
Perfect for fans of Holly Martin, Mandy Baggot and Heidi Swain.

Sarah has been dreaming of going on holiday for years but with work, looking after her younger sister Amy and no spare cash that dream has never come true, that is until Amy wins some money on the lottery and declares she is taking them both on a five-star luxury break.
Sarah didn’t want her sister to spend all her money on a holiday but was looking forward to being pampered for two weeks, especially as she has just been sacked from her hospitality job.
Amy though has a secret, she decided to swap their holiday at the last minute. They are going to spend their time abroad on an island that was hit by a Hurricane and needs a lot of work doing to it. No five-star hotel rooms, more wooden shacks without aircon. Sarah is livid but she doesn’t want to let Amy down, so she is going to have to muck in and clean toilets, rescue turtle eggs, and make pathways in her fancy clothes and manicured nails.
There is one ray of hope though, the gorgeous man who loves on the island, now he is worth staying for, isn’t he?
Can you imagine getting all excited about your first holiday in years and after pampering other guests in your joy you can’t wait for someone to be pampering you? You have your hair cut, nails manicured, pack your fancy clothes, and your heels and then turn up in a place with no running water, a compost toilet, no shops, or even proper roads. The place feels like hell on earth to you but you have to put a brave face so as not to destroy your little sister’s happiness who is all excited about a working holiday.
Sarah is a very likeable woman who has always tried to do her best for her younger sister after what happened in their past with their father. She is hardworking and although the situation isn’t ideal and at first wants to leave right away, she realises she has to knuckle down and get on with things and maybe that the place isn’t that bad, nor are the other guests or the grandson of the owner.
The book moved at a nice pace and kept me entertained throughout. As well as the human characters there were some animals too, including a blind monkey that had been rescued from being forced to perform on the streets.
The plot is so full-on that it felt like the guests never stopped trying to fix up the island. The romance aspect was nicely handled, though, I do feel that the book would have even worked as a great read without a romance within it.
Overall, The Summer Island Swap is a wonderful summery read that is pure escapism. It is enjoyable and realistic too. I’m not sure I would have stuck around, I think I might have been on the first boat out of there!
A sweet summer read. I was looking forward to Reading this book, but I just could not connect with the characters in this book. Maybe I just read it when my heart craved a different types of book. Thank you to netgalley for this e arc in exchange for an honest opinion
Sarah has looked after her sister Amy since their mother succumbed to breast cancer when Sarah was eleven and Amy seven. It was a difficult childhood for them both, their father was demanding and verbally abusive, and at eighteen Sarah left to ‘make her own way’, starting as a receptionist at a mid-level hotel. Now years later, Sarah’s been promoted to Assistant Manager, Amy is working as a veterinary rurse, and has just won a small windfall from the lottery. Amy’s plan is to take Sarah away on a dream holiday – a month of five-star relaxation in the British Virgin Islands.
But just before they left, Amy changed the holiday to a conservation-themed one, with shacks, compost toilets, work rotas and working various projects to help native flora and fauna in the recovery from a hurricane three years earlier. Surprise!
I’ll be honest, initially it was difficult to get into the story as there was a ton of self-doubt and recrimination (and more than a few control issues) from Sarah, and the surprises, along with some withholding of pertinent information from Sarah, was troubling. But soon, the space, Amy’s excitement, Sarah’s determination and innovation when it came to the ‘resort’ and their money troubles, and Rick’s appeal to Sarah, and her fighting it if not making friends with Cheeky the monkey was addictive. Soon, things are changing, Rick and Sarah are getting closer, we understand Sarah’s struggles with self-esteem and Rick’s similar battles with his older brother, and the balance between making a difference to conservation while simultaneously amassing profits and a sustainable model to keep the family’s island in business. Tonge’s ability to combine pertinent issues, flawed characters and a cute monkey to spur on healing and hope worked – and as each page passed, I needed to know more. A lovely getaway with several twists, that left me smiling and happy for them all.
I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via NetGalley for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.
Samantha Tonge is one of the authors whose books I just can't wait to read and this proved another brilliant story to escape into from her! This is a fantastic story of siblings, looking after each other and discovering more about yourself, your abilities and your dreams - as well as a heartwarming romance. It is about expectations, being out of your comfort zone and finding inspiration and another superb story from this highly talented author.
How would you react if your much loved younger sibling won a prize on the lottery and booked you both a whole month away at a fabulous luxury holiday resort? Excited? Eager? Delighted? Despite problems with her boss, Sarah feels all those things. However, imagine her reaction when it turns out Amy revised their plans. Instead of a luxury holiday they're going to work on a conservation project..... forget the luxurious accommodation and activities, think emptying communal compost toilets, showers with only cold running water - and tarantulas - and no air conditioning. To say Sarah is shocked is an understatement! However, sometimes unexpected changes can have life changing impacts . . . . what you are disappointed has changed can actually lead to something even better and help not only yourself but others, too.
With great insights into sibling relationships, the need for conservation projects, more than one romance, fabulous characters, a superb setting and a delightful, mischievous monkey I absolutely loved this story and have no hesitation at all in highly recommending it.
I requested and was gifted a copy of this via NetGalley and this is my honest review after thoroughly enjoying reading it.
This is only the second book I have read by Samantha Tonge and again I was completely hooked with her witty and heart-warming story of friendship and family. I really love Samantha’s writing, you are not only swept away on a fun and enjoyable adventure but with some serious subjects that make you stop and really think about the world we live in. Sarah hasn’t been on holiday in an age, after a pretty turbulent year she is ready to relax and allow her mind and body to chill and wind down. But as things stand losing her job and not having anything else in the pipeline plus not money, the long-wished-for dream of a holiday is just that; a dream. That is until her sister; Amy wins some money and decides to take them both on a dream holiday, she is going to whisked them both away to a sunny and relaxing island. I really like Sarah, her story really spoke to me, I related to her far more then I did Amy. She is a very relatable and likable woman, she has always done her best, worked hard and always looked after her little sister. She is the sort of woman that anyone can instantly like, she is a little down on her luck and deserves a little happiness and fun. Sarah thinks that Amy has booked them a glorious Caribbean holiday, four weeks of nothing but luxury and pampering. Oh, how wrong she is! It turn’s out that the holiday is in fact, a paid voluntary conservation scheme, instead of a month of sunning herself and being waited on hand and foot, it in fact means a month of hard graft. What I really liked about this book is that even thought there is a hint of a romance, it doesn’t overshadow the main plot, this is all about building confidence, binding those family ties and finding ones feet again, it’s all about friendship and the strength of family and self discovery. The romance aspect is really sweet, and to be perfectly honest this book would be just as delightful whether there was romance or not. There is such a important message hidden within, not only to that doing things for your is important to moving forward and coping with past issues. But there is a serious aspect in the conservation side which does make you stop and think. Overall, a hugely enjoyable, inspirational and perfect escapist story, at times a little predictable but I was completely hooked!
I'm not sure about anybody else but I am reading more during lockdown - but I cannot read anything too demanding or heavy - and this book fitted the bill perfectly.
A slight misunderstanding over her holiday arrangements find Sarah not on her luxurious no expense spared holiday destination complete with unlimited cocktails and sunshine but instead on a conservation project on the stunning British Virgin Islands. To say she is not happy about this is an understatement and she is determined not to enjoy it. But as time passes and her friendship with the project leader develops her attitude changes. The setting sounds wonderful and the project itself is quite topical. Love the interaction between the sisters and how their relationship changes. But best of all is the little monkey - if he doesn't capture your heart then nothing will.
This is a perfect piece of escapism which I am sure many of us need right now.
After a big win fall on the lottery, sister's Amy and Sarah Sterling both in their twenties, Amy plans a four week dream holiday for them both its a surprise. After their mothers death they become best friend living together after their father remarried this holiday is going to be perfect. So what is ahead for them? Such a good pick me up read right through. Giving you a feel good feeling, the girls get a real eye opener to this holiday. Wildlife and authentic foods at Cecao House on Seagrass Island has opened their eyes and changed them both. I just loved everything about this heartwarming book right to the end. Loved it.
Sarah has spent her whole adult life working hard to build a safe home for her younger sister away from their troubled childhood, but now Amy wants to give her something back. With money from a recent lottery win burning a hole in her pocket Amy decides to treat the siblings to a once in a lifetime trip to the Virgin Islands.
Sarah dreams of luxury, sipping cocktails next to the pool, big comfy beds and it's much needed especially as her tyrant boss decided to sack her from her just before their holiday. Amy is an eco warrior who loves everything nature and animals and a month long luxury holiday wouldn't be her first choice, but she's willing to do anything for her sister to repay her for everything she has done for her....... or is she?
On a whim Amy changes their holiday plans hoping to surprise Sarah and boy does she get a surprise! Instead of a month of relaxation she finds they are signed up as conservation volunteers; living in huts, taking cold showers and eating fish soup for breakfast. It's literally Sarah's worst nightmare and her instincts tell her to jump straight on the next plane home, but she decides to suck it up and knuckle down for her sister's sake. It has nothing of course to do with the tall, dark, mysterious Rick who runs the family conservation project!
Without a doubt this is my favourite of Samantha's books to date! The characters are wonderfully written, flaws and all, making them not only realistic but so easy for me as a reader to become invested in their stories. There is a variety of characters hailing from different countries and walks of life and it was really interesting to see the interactions and bonds the sisters made with their campmates as the book progressed. I especially enjoyed the friendship and camaraderie between Sarah and Jonas, another unwilling volunteer. It was also wonderful to see the inclusion of queer characters, something I absolutely love to discover in books.
At first glance you would be mistaken for thinking this book is a romance, but I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the budding relationship between Sarah and Rick is actually more of a side plot with the real focus being on the family relationships. As I have already mentioned Sarah and Amy didn't have a pleasant childhood and there are triggers in this book for death, bullying and abuse; all of which were an integral part of the story in order for the reader to understand the siblings motivations. It was fantastic to witness the character growth both girls underwent throughout the story, letting go of the past and focusing on what is important for the future - it gave me all those warm fuzzy feels you want from a book!
The island backdrop really made this book though, with it's wonderful scenery and eclectic wildlife I could easily close my eyes and imagine myself there beside the volunteers thanks to Tonge's descriptive writing. I especially loved Chatty the monkey who was without a doubt the star of the book, bringing some humour and joy into the the lives of the characters and readers alike.
The Summer Island Swap is the perfect heartwarming read that left me questioning what's important in my own life and in a really reflective mood when I finished reading. I absolutely loved every second of this book and read it in only a day, I just couldn't put it down! If you aren't already a fan of Samantha Tonge's books I recommend you give this one a go and if you already love her writing this one is a sure fire winner! I can't wait to see what she has in store for us next!
A delightful story about family, friendship, and new beginnings, THE SUMMER ISLAND SWAP by Samantha Tonge is a great way to pass an afternoon, relaxing in the garden.
Sarah is used to looking after her younger sister, Amy, as it is the role she has always played, ever since their mother died. And now Amy wants to thank Sarah and show her that she is no longer a little girl by organising a once-in-a-lifetime luxury trip for them both to somewhere far-flung and exotic. Sarah cannot wait!!! Except, Amy decides to throw a curveball and has booked them on a working holiday on an island where it is more wooden shacks than luxurious bedsheets and where emptying the compost toilet is supposed to help you become one with your surroundings. Sarah is horrified but as she begins to meet new people, learn new skills, and start to let go of the past, it could just be the best holiday she never wished for ...
With witty and fresh characters and a unique setting that grabbed my attention, THE SUMMER ISLAND SWAP by Samantha Tonge is enjoyable from beginning to end. Each character is distinctly different which worked well for me and while parts are predictable, I found that comforting and endearing. A good story, THE SUMMER ISLAND SWAP is sure to please fictions fans everywhere.
Wow! This is the perfect summer escape that we all so desperately need at the moment! I totally lost myself in the gorgeous setting of Seagrass Island!
I'd never read a book set in the Virgin Islands before, never read a book with conservation as a focus before, and never read a book with a monkey in it before! And I'm so glad I did! Chatty the monkey may well be my favourite book animal ever!
I loved Sarah, and her protective, sisterly attitude, the relationship between the two sisters, especially how it evolves as the book goes on, and the hints at their unhappy past which isn't fully revealed until the end, and of course, I loved gorgeous Rick, his passion and dedication, and the building relationship between him and Sarah! I also love the smaller characters, like Jonas, Benedikt, and Margot - all characters who will stay with me for a long time!
I laughed, I cringed at some of the things Sarah had to do, and I sobbed at the end! I couldn't stop thinking about this book when I'd put my Kindle down and looked forward to getting back to it every night! I love Samantha Tonge as an author - this is far from my first book of hers and it certainly won't be my last! Although I sincerely hope I won't be showering with a tarantula anytime soon, I would love a little Chatty of my own! He was the absolute highlight of this wonderful book for me!
The Blurb : After a long and turbulent year, Sarah is dreaming of the five-star getaway her sister has booked them on. And Sarah is distracted by the dishy, yet incredibly moody, island leader she's sure is hiding a secret.
My Thoughts : This is such a beautiful cover, it screams read me and as I am a fan of Samantha Tonge, I couldnt wait to get stuck in. Sarah and Amy are sisters. When Amy wins some money on the lottery she insists on taking her sister on holiday. Sarah starts getting all excited and dreaming of a luxury stay in a top hotel with room service, white sandy beaches and cocktails by the pool, little does she know that Amy swapped them onto a conservation project staying on Seagrass Island thinking it would be so much more fun than a luxury resort. Sarah knows nothing about this until they arrive on the island. Faced with tatty buildings, a compost toilet, cold showers, mozzies everywhere and not a cocktail in sight, Sarah refuses to stay and wants the first boat out of there. Will Sarah really leave Seagrass Island and upset her sister or will she decide to stay and suck it up!?. Although a bit of a slow start for me, I did really warm upto the charactors and loved exploring the Island and how the conservation project developed!. Samantha Tonge really did her homework. I loved the Sea Turtles and then there is Chatty the blind monkey, such a cute addition. This was perfect escapism with some romance thrown in.
The Summer Island Swap is a gorgeous, fun loving read that will have you crossing out your holiday wishlist and adding a small island off the Caribbean coast. You’ll not only fall in love with the beautiful sunsets and the lush flora and myriad of fauna but your heart will be stolen by a little chap who loves freeze dried strawberries!
When you’ve worked in the hotel industry for a long time and your sister surprises you with a treat of a month long holiday you can’t help but fantasise about role reversal and being the recipient of pampering at a luxury hotel. However, Sarah was in for a surprise from sister Amy as when they got to their destination the staff at the resort were none existent, unless you counted the guests including yourself who have paid to volunteer at a conservation resort. Sarah was not impressed at all and was all set to return on the next flight home. She’d packed new holiday clothes including dresses, strappy sandals and bikinis which were totally unsuitable and not on the required inventory list on the resort website. Amy was going to be in trouble with her sister!
Sarah soon found a fellow confederate with another guest who was as equally unimpressed with the destination. However, Sarah is a very determined young lady, from a young age she’s had to prove she can cope under adversity and she’s not going to let a few creepy crawlies, basic accommodation and a bit of hard graft beat her. She decides to give the conservation project a go but it’s not all plain sailing for Sarah. She’s like a fish out of water and stumbles through many obstacles physically and mentally and a handsome owner of the project is one of the obstacles she has to contend with.
I really enjoyed this story by Samantha Tonge; it was filled with plenty of light hearted fun and frolics but it also held a serious side to the storyline with the sisters coping with a troubled and painful childhood. The conservation side of the story was very interesting and inspired me. It’s left me food for thought on what is most important in time away from home; is it luxury or is it a sense of achievement in helping good causes such as a conservation project like the one in Samantha Tonge’s book? A story with plenty of heart and warmth with an underlining feeling of inspiration.
I really really want to cuddle Chatty, he is just the best monkey ever, so adorable, blind and seems to like bad whistling.
I'm not quite as keen on all the creepy crawlies, and the compost toilet etc.. that are also part of this unexpected island holiday for Sarah. For she has been promised ultimate luxury, and then her sister Amy swapped the holiday as a surprise at the last min, and instead they are in an animal lovers dream holiday, at a conservation project, in the British Virgin Islands rainforest.
To say this isn't Sarah's dream holiday would be understatement, but her love for her sister and determination makes her decide to stay for the full month and to take part. She also hadn't counted on the sexy Rick, whose island and project this is.
He is passionate about everything to do with the island, the wildlife, the way of life etc.. and yet struggles to realise not everyone feels quite the same as him.
Amy is a vetinary nurse and has a massive amount of knowledge about the various species on the island, and as the book progresses, her confidence really does grow and develop.
I really enjoyed getting to know some of the other volunteers on this holiday. We are treated to detailed descriptions of all sorts of the activities on offer, and I really felt as though I was in this hot humid rainforest, being eaten alive by bug bites, while learning a whole lot about nature.
Other than Samantha Tonge's fabulous storytelling skills, I wasn't sure what to expect going into this book, especially given my ideal holiday would be what Sarah had been anticipating, and not something so physical, yet I was completely engrossed and couldn't get enough of all the details. It is just a fabulous way to escape the realities of life at the moment, and be immersed into an experience so different from my own that it was utterly gripping.
I loved every moment of this exhilarating story and wish it hadn't ended.
Thank you to Aria and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
I'm regularly bemoaning the fact that since I started properly blogging, a lot of my fave authors have gone by the wayside, I just never get a chance to get to their books any more! Samantha Tonge was definitely one of those authors, with books that were right up my street, sparkly, bright and vivid, with wistful romance and amazing settings. Luckily enough I had a chance to get back to her books and so, here I am, with a book that is all that and so much more! But I digress.
I loved meeting Sarah, who unfortunately had to deal with a 'beep' for a boss (she's in the hospitality sector). I felt for Sarah especially as she feels so much responsibility for her sister Amy, who has recently won the lottery and is treating them to an extravagant holiday away. Or so Sarah thinks.
The early of this moment gave me many 'snort out loud' moments (the best type of moment(;)) as the realisation dawned that actually they were actually heading off to a conservation initiative and I totally felt for her. With the sanctuary type setting comes many characters and I was enthralled with them all as we also followed her sister Amy, the ever enthusiastic Helga and also Jonas.
The setting was amazing, and everything I remembered about Ms. Tonge put me right there. The romance was beautiful and not forced at all, I loved that we weren't belted over the head with any of the romance on the island (there's more than you expect and it's all done brilliantly!) I also sucked in the 'dear reader' letter at the end which backs up a beautiful, spell binding novel that provided me with much needed escapism. Thanks so much to Aria for the book in return for an honest review and for allowing me to be part of this beautiful blog tour.
This was such a lovely feel good summer read. Sarah is looking forward to a 5* luxury holiday on a Caribbean island. She'd looked after her sister my since they lost their mum , and Amy wanted to spoil her big sister when she had a small win. They arrive to a holiday completely out of Sarah's comfort zone and the opposite of the 5* luxury she had been dreaming about. Amy had swapped it for a conservation project. She'd done it with the best of intentions and Sarah didn't want to hurt her feelings, but she's not feeling the love! It sounded an absolutely fascinating holiday- hard work , but so rewarding. But no cocktails by the pool and luxury spa treatments. Things aren't running quite as smoothly under the surface as they could be. I absolutely loved this book, getting drawn into the activities, Amy's love of helping with the animals, Sarah putting her skills to use in unexpected ways. The sense of camaraderie with the others working on the project , the draw of romance in the air and the skype calls with the nan were amusing. There are parts of that holiday that I would have loved- if they had been excursions from the luxury island!
Thanks to netgalley for the chance to read this book.
Sarah thinks her sister Amy has booked a five star luxury holiday after winning some money in the lottery. However, when they arrive she realises it’s actually a holiday roughing it in a conservation project on an island with wooden shacks, compost toilet just like I’m a celebrity get me out of here. Sarah finds it hard to adjust to the basic living arrangements praying for a quick escape. As Sarah continues to battle with the simple lifestyle she comes up with some ideas to develop some of the island into a luxury relaxing hotel. Will Rick the island leader go for the ideas or will Sarah decide to leave the island early.
An absolute brilliant read from Samantha can’t wait for her next book.
Some women will do anything to get close to a brooding look and broad shoulders. Sarah isn't one of them. It's bad enough that her sister booked the two of them on a eco volunteer break instead of a 5 star luxury hotel but with the project leader taking everything she says the wrong way it's going to be a very long 4 weeks. This is the perfect book to read on the beach while thanking God that you don't have to empty a compost toilet. There are some great characters here including a tiny blind monkey aptly named Chatty..Lighthearted and funny with a touch of romance thrown in this book is well worth a read.
My first by this author and I'll be seeking out more. I didn't read the blurb, I just saw the cover and loved it. I was expecting a fancy beach holiday story and it was, but with a difference. I loved that I didn't know what was coming. The camaraderie between the characters made it for me. What a beautiful island too. Thanks to Aria Fiction and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review.
Not a bad read. This book does explore a bit on recovering from childhood trauma. Sometimes, that can feel rushed or too fake. With the amount of time the characters had, I don’t believe that the trauma had the chance to be explored. However, knowing the characters only had four weeks, I think that the author did well to show some change and growth.
A great summer read and escape (the only way I’m getting them is books) so this is perfect, full of fun, sunshine, perfect escapism. The characters are nice, the book is well written and it’s a lovely easy read.
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a free copy for an honest opinion
This was one of the best books I've read for a long time. The characters were engaging and lovely to see some inclusivity featured as well. The monkey Chatty was adorable and Sarah's plight with being out of her comfort zone really resonated with me. I'm not sure I would have had the same strength of character as she did, especially with the tarantulas in the shower.
The storyline was well-paced and entertaining and I enjoyed finding out the secrets and mysteries in the character's pasts as well as how they coped in the present.
I have read a few of Samantha Tonge's books (Doubting Abbey, Breakfast Under a Cornish Sun) but it sure won't be my last.
I'm ashamed to admit that I was guilty of breaking a bookworms rule; never judge a book by it's cover. I didn't even read the blurb for this, I requested purely because the cover appealed to me and I thought the book would provide that much needed escapism that I was looking for.
Whilst I really did enjoy this book, I do have mixed feelings about it. At times it was a little slow for me, and after the half way mark I did start to struggle, although this was only for a few chapters. There were also a few formatting and grammar issues which sometimes distracted me from the story as I had to backtrack slightly to work things out. Although I don't think you should be put off by that, because I'm sure all of these issues will be corrected before the book is published, and it was still a lovely story that drew me in from the start.
One of the things I loved most about this book is the way that Sarah changes so much from being sensible and uptight, to being more relaxed and allowing herself to feel free. Sarah and her sister Amy had a difficult childhood, and Sarah has always felt the need to protect Amy, to the point of smothering her at times.
Although there's only a four year age gap between them, Sarah feels very maternal towards her little sister which could often come across as patronising, with Amy feeling like Sarah doesn't trust her. As the two sisters start to find their own paths on the island, Sarah begins to realise that Amy isn't a child anymore, and is capable of making her own decisions in life.
I also loved seeing the change in Amy as she starts to gain more confidence in herself. During her childhood, she was made to believe that she wasn't good enough to follow her dreams of becoming a vet, but as she spends more time caring for the wildlife on the island, she's made to feel needed and capable.
Although this trip isn't what Sarah was expecting, and it certainly wasn't the break she was hoping for, it turns out to be the best thing she's ever done. At home, Sarah always made sure she was dressed smartly, had perfect make up and hair, and didn't let her guard down. After spending a few days on the island, she loosens up and stops worrying about trivial things like appearances, as she learns that life is too short. I loved watching her just let go and enjoy her time on the island, pushing herself to limits she didn't believe possible.
Another aspect I enjoyed with this book was the wildlife on the island, especially the turtles. I can only imagine how wonderful it must be to see these animals in their natural habitat and to care for and rehabilitate them. The setting for this book was just amazing, and it really made me crave a holiday to somewhere warm with golden sands. It certainly gave me the escapism I was looking for.
Of course no Romance novel is complete without the love interest. Rick is the leader of the island, and whilst he's moody, and patronising at times, Sarah's thoughts often drift to him. He's exactly the sort of man she usually avoids, believing that falling in love with such a handsome man can only lead to heartbreak.
She's also fiercely independent and fears relying on other people, especially a man. Through spending more time with him she understands just how much he loves the island and the wildlife that call it their home; perceiving the caring nature underneath the grumpy exterior.
Overall, although I struggled in the middle of the book I really did enjoy the story. I'm glad I persevered because the story did pick up again for me and I grew quite attached to a certain cheeky little character! I wouldn't hesitate to read more by Samantha Tonge, as I felt like I was being whisked away to sunnier climes. The story was interesting, funny, romantic, and uplifting. Exactly what I was looking for.
I write this review whilst hoping it will bring back the beautiful lockdown weather...fingers crossed!
Sarah is a young woman with a career plan. Working in hospitality, she is keen to make her mark on the hotel business, wanting to work her way up to a luxury resort where she can really have an impact on customers hotel experiences. She is hard working and driven, and she pushes to provide her sister Amy with a roof over her head and the support she needs to succeed in the veterinary world.
When Amy has a small windfall, she is keen to repay Sarah with an all expenses paid trip to the British Virgin Islands. A four week trip, spending her time experiencing luxury whilst researching a top-end hotel is just what Sarah needs. What Sarah actually gets though is really rather different...
Concerned that Sarah will spend their trip with her work head on, Amy instead books a four week trip to a conservation project in the British Virgin Islands. Hard work, compost toilets and wooden shacks for accommodation were not exactly what Sarah had in mind, although hunky Island leader Rick could certainly change her view of the place!
This is a modern twist on the classic 'fish out of water' story. Upon arriving at their beautiful destination, Sarah is immediately out of her comfort zone. She is forced into a situation that she ultimately hates, all whilst trying to maintain a facade of happiness to her sister who she refuses to disappoint. As we all know though, it is only when we are uncomfortable or put into new situations that we get to learn about ourselves, and what we really want from life.
I really liked Sarah as a character. I could relate to how protective of her sister she was, even if it did stifle Amy at times. Her drive to succeed comes from a lifetime of put downs, and again, it's completely relatable. Her entire persona makes sense, and so watching her struggle with her new surroundings sometimes makes difficult reading. Don't get me wrong, this is a light-hearted novel with some romance thrown in for good measure, but that doesn't make the characters any less relatable or interesting to follow.
This is really nice, easy to read novel, set in a luscious location (if we can't go on holiday in real life then we may as well visit far flung places within the pages of novels!). This is a great novel for readers interested in conservation, desert islands and characters who need to work out what they really want from life - if only I could do that from a desert island! Grab yourself a cocktail and settle down with this novel!
Thanks to Aria for providing me with a copy of this novel via Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
Samantha Tonge is back with a fun, feel-good, poignant and irresistible page-turner that will bring a smile to readers’ faces and lift their spirits: The Summer Island Swap. As brilliantly written as ever, The Summer Island Swap is a gripping page-turner I simply could not stop reading.
Sarah has had a long and difficult year that has been fraught with all manner of problems and challenges. The only thing keeping her going is the thought of a luxury Caribbean getaway which her sister has booked for the two of them. Sarah cannot wait for sandy beaches, delicious cocktails and balmy summer sunshine. She longs for some much-needed relaxation and does not plan on doing much at all during her holiday except topping up her tan and lounging on her sunbed. Unfortunately for her, her sister Amy had a brainwave and at the last minute had thought that a sojourn in a conservation project would be more fun. Forget about five star luxury and fine dining, this holiday is all about going back to basics, so so long power showers and room service because it’s time to get used to dilapidated beaches, compost toilets and wooden shacks being held up by glue and hope.
Sarah does not know what possessed Amy to book them on the holiday from hell. She wants the first flight out of this nightmare she has found herself trapped in and a decent shower, but when she begins to let go of the negatives and starts looking at the positives, she realises that maybe this holiday was what she needed. As the relationship between the two sisters strengthens, Sarah begins to commune with nature and even starts to make new friends and begins to trust her heart thanks to the handsome island leader whom she is increasingly finding herself distracted by…
This holiday might not be what Sarah initially wanted, but it might just provide with just what she has been looking for all along…
Samantha Tonge is on sparkling form with The Summer Island Swap, a witty, warm-hearted and emotional tale about taking chances, the ties that bind and letting go the past that is as delicious as a chilled glass of your favourite cocktail.
A zesty-paced page-turner that makes for perfect summer reading, The Summer Island Swap is another winner by Samantha Tonge.
Sarah has been working and taking care of her sister for years. When her sister wins some money in the lottery, she plans and books a holiday for the two of them. One month on an island with five star service. Working in the hospitality industry, Sarah is excited to stay in a five star resort, and plans to gather as much information as she can to further her career. At the last minute, Amy switched islands. She didn't want Sarah to feel like she was at work, but wanted to treat her to something different, well, different it was. They end up on a working vacation for a conservation effort, with no indoor toilets, huts they share and physical labour that Sarah has not done in years, if ever.
This was a fun story dealing with dreams, new beginnings, family (specifically siblings), environmental issues, endangered species, friendship, acceptance, honesty and romance. That seems like a lot of issues but Samantha Tonge writes a story that naturally includes them all and weaves them together into an interesting and enjoyable story. Her characters were wonderful with enough development to get this reader caring about them and what would happen next. I loved learning about the island and the issues it deals with. The concerns about development are real and the importance of that is included in a way that got the message across, but as part of the overall wonderful story. I do recommend this story to readers of romance and families, but with some other meatier issues such as siblings who look after each other and discovering more about yourself, your abilities and your dreams. The characters move out of their comfort zone, but find out what they are made of and what they really want out of life. It has been awhile since I read a book by Samantha Tonge, but I will go back and read some of the ones I have missed. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book upon request. The rating, ideas and opinions shared are my own.
I received this as an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review of the book.
This was my first time reading a book by this author and I enjoyed it.
The book features two sisters, Sarah and Amy, who go on a tropical vacation after Amy wins some money in the lottery. Sarah is your typical type-a person who as an older sister much makes sure that her baby sister fine and doing what she is supposed to do in life.
With Amy's lottery wins she wants to take her sister on a well-deserved vacation and tells Sarah that they are going to a five-star hotel in the Virgin Islands. But what Sarah doesn't know is that Amy made a last-minute switch that will change the course of her life. See Amy decided to take them to a conservation project instead of a 5-star hotel because she felt that it was too close to what Sarah did for a living and wanted her to be detached from work completely.
During her first week on the conservation project, Sarah struggles with compost toilets and all the mosquito bites she gets. BUT who can blame her, this isn't what she expected to be doing for the next month of her life?
While on the conservation project, she ends up falling for Rick, the owner of the island. But Rick comes with his secrets and struggles. See his family's business is losing money and he needs to help them.
With the help of Sarah, Rick and she can turn the island in a resort destination to help the family business generate some income, while also keeping the conservation project going.
The Summer Island Swap is a sweet book to read and was enjoyable. This book had me dreaming of the days when I could take a vacation aboard again.
I would recommend reading it to anyone who is interested in love, some humor, and interested in falling in love with a little monkey named Chatty.
Absolutely enjoyed this one. I fell in love with Sarah and Rick. It was a slow start for me and I thought this book was trying to push an ecological agenda at first. It almost read that way. But I was mistaken and it turned out to be a great book.
Sarah thinks her sister Amy has booked a five star luxury holiday after winning money from the lottery. However, when they arrive she realizes it’s actually a holiday roughing it in a conservation project on an island with wooden shacks, compost toilet, and lots of chores to be done. This is not the relaxing holiday she had in mind and honestly needed. Sarah is ready to head out when the charismatic island leader Rick starts to doubt Sarah. Well then it becomes a battle of wills that she must prove him wrong. She has all the wrong clothes, all the wrong ideas, and of course Rick doesn't know this. He just thinks Sarah is an idiot who thought she was going to just come and help out a little. As Sarah continues to battle with the simple lifestyle she comes up with some ideas to develop some of the island into a luxury relaxing hotel to help the island actually make some money, so he can continue his conservation work. Will Rick the island leader go for the ideas or will Sarah decide to leave the island early.
I was just overall super happy with this book. It was such a wonderful little read. Perfect for those on vacation. I found the love story a perfect combination of sweet with a few problems and misunderstandings thrown in for good measure. It was a perfect little 4.5 star read for me. I really did enjoy it.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publishers, and the author for allowing me to read and review.
Sarah and Amy Sterling are sisters finally living together in London after a traumatic childhood tore them apart. When Amy's syndicate wins the lottery she decides they deserve a holiday somewhere usually out of their reach. Sarah is imagining luxury hotels, white sand, hot sun and evenings beneath the stars and she might have got it if Amy hadn't changed their plans at the last minute. Now the only thing the same are the stars because they are part of a group volunteering on a Caribbean conservation project and there are absolutely no mod cons!
This is such a lovely book, there is a level of self worth and positivity that increases exponentially as the book progresses with, of course, the occasional hiccup all good fiction deserves. Mainly a reader of psychological thrillers I need to experience a far less heartstopping type of novel every now and again and Samantha Tonge is brilliant at providing that. As with her 2019 festive offering The Christmas Calendar Girls, I lost myself in very pleasant circumstances, this time in the the British Virgin islands. As before, a topical life problem was explored with sensitivity and realism which added extra depth to a wonderfully engaging feel good story experience.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers in exchange for an unbiased review and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys Samantha Tonge's novels or wants some pure holiday escapism, this is definitely worth reading wherever they spend the summer.
