Stopping an assassination isn’t enough.

Kiriai threw herself in front of a poisoned blade to protect her boss and earned the official title of scrapper, a lifelong dream. But, it’s all worthless when she’s forced to stand on her doorstep, powerless to stop burb ‘forcers as they whisk her grandfather, a renowned healer, away. She’ll do anything to get him back.

Her most powerful allies can’t help her, especially when a deadly plague descends on their world and sends everyone into a panic. With official channels blocked, Kiriai knows there is only one way to reunite her family and stop the plague: start a one-woman rebellion.

What can one junior scrapper do against a powerful chief in a distant burb? This time, Kiriai fights against a foe who uses political power to tip the scales. Fiercely loyal, Kiriai’s crew follow her lead, determined to do whatever it takes to win her grandfather's freedom. His healing skills are the only way to stop the plague and save the lives of everyone they love.

Combat Outbreak is the third book in the World of Combat young adult dystopia series. If you like outspoken heroines, a chance at redemption, gamelit and nail-biting combat scenes, grab a copy today.

After reading this book, I wanted to write and post this review to share my honest experiences toward the story.

So much action, so much suspense and drama…I LOVED it!

We start off where the second book ended off. Kiriai saved the boss’ life and has been given a token to represent a personal favour. Kiriai is officially a senior scrapper, she is closer to her goal. There’s just one problem…Ojisan has been taken by the Boss of the Southern Burb to work for him instead of the Jitaku Hood. Our strong-willed heroine, Kiriai, is determined to get him back, but not all actions are without consequence, and Kiriai may have to choose between her grandfather or her career. With a deadly plague sweeping through Jitaku Hood and decimating the victims, Ojisan’s help is needed more than ever.

The characters develop so much throughout the story, especially Kiriai. It seems that with each book in the series, Kiriai learns an important life lesson and has to make a difficult choice. I’m not saying that it’s a bad thing; far from it – these are things that will make her a better heroine at the conclusion. With the help of Isha, Eigo, Sento, and Yabban, Kiriai manages to make it from one day to the next when the world seems to be crumbling around her.

Yabban, as always, is awesome and has a great personality. I love the jokes and how Yabban tries to be more human and help Kiriai develop.

The budding romance from the previous book begins to bloom in this one; don’t worry, no adult content or anything like that, but two characters do share a kiss.

Speaking of mature content, like I said, it’s a clean read, but there are some scenes involving plague victims that show the morbid reality of the illness. However, it is not overly graphic. Even the violence and the fights are not graphic, but detailed in the sense that makes you clearly envision exactly what is going on.
Overall, still going strong, can’t wait to see what is in store for Kiriai in the next book!

I have to admit I kind of binged all the World of Combat books and really enjoyed this one, much like the second one we continue to see the world view grow as more and more revelations are made. More then just the growth of her martial skill, the world becomes more fascinating seen through the eyes of a budding adult and we learn more and more the intricacies of how the political factions shape the world (and of course lots of fighting and training, cause it's an action dystopia series). I'm also adoring the AI Trainer more and more.

I received an ARC for an objective review. But honestly I plan to buy the books once I figure out how to on my kindle, I adore them and the author is worth the support.

This is book three of the World of Combat Dystopia series and continues with telling the life of a young female fighter called Kiriai. She has worked her way up the ranks from just being someone other fighters could practise against, to being an actual ‘scrapper’ as the fighters are called in this world, thru to now being a senior scrapper. In the last book, she saved the hoods boss from a poisoned knife attack and earned his favour. But none of this was enough to stop her grandfather, a well-known fixer and healer, from being taken to the main city by the big city boss. This should be seen as a great privilege, but Kiriai is still finding her feet as a fighter and her grandfather is the only family she has left.

She asks the hood boss to stop this, but he is powerless to stop the orders which come from above him. The city boss wants him as his personal healer, to ensure he doesn’t get poisoned, as others have been. Soon after this, a serious illness starts to affects most of the hoods population, even those of neighbouring hoods. It turns out this is a deadly plague, somewhat similar to ones in their distant history, which wiped out most of mankind, leaving just small pockets to survive after the plague and massive destruction of a nuclear war.

Their normal state of control over any illness, is to isolate those that seem ill for at least a week, until they either recover or die. Nothing is ignored and the populace have become fearful of any type of illness and isolates people just for a common cold! People are dying in droves and some could be saved by the simple work of a fixer like her grandfather and his apprentice, now fully fledged fixer in her own right, Isha. Kiriai and even her childhood friend Eigo have been assisting Isha in her battle against the plague and she has even managed to rope in Sento, her somewhat boyfriend to help, but only to carry supplies, as his fear of the plague is too high.

Kiriai sees a chance to get her grandfather back, to aide in helping those affected by the plague, but her hood boss cannot be seen to favour her actions. She has to do what no-one has ever done before and many think is impossible and challenge this distant city boss to a dispute resolution. She is rebelling against everything her hood colleagues and boss hold as sacred and going over his head and leaving them all vulnerable. The city boss has the power of political favour and high placed friends on his side and Kiriai and her team must overcome many hurdles in a short space f time, in their attempt to beat the city boss’ fighter. Not least is Kiriai’s ongoing training and her placing and experience as a scrapper.

I read the first book in the series, after receiving this one from BookSprout, and managed to get the prequel story as well. I sadly missed out on book two of the series, Combat Mind, as I had counted the prequel in as one of the series. This book can be read quite easily as a standalone book, as lots of information is given to you as part of the story, but I prefer to read a series in book order, to find out how characters develop over the series and what events occur as well. I’m really enjoying this series and I can’t wait to read the books which are to follow. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Kiriai is a strong, young fighter (scrapper), and watching her character develop in this third book is fascinating. In "Outbreak" there's a good balance of fighting and introspection, and I felt like I got to know Kiriai better as she opened up more. The plot is fast-paced, with surprising twists, and well written. I'm really looking forward to book 4!

Kiriai's grandfather has been forcibly and permanently moved to a different neighborhood due to Jaaku's treachery (will someone please take him out?!). She embarks on a fierce campaign to bring him back, not just because he's her only family, but also because his intervention may be the only way to stop their neighborhood from depopulation by the plague (which sounds like a simple but brutal norovirus).
The plague and its treatment with isolation of the ill is sobering. The recent scattered cases of measles and public/media reaction has echoes of this iso protocol.
I'm still not convinced that Sento is the right boyfriend for her, but I'm sure having fun seeing how their relationship is going!
Yabban (the Artificial Intelligence linked to Kiriai) gains autonomy and "her" terrible puns are a hilarious counterpoint. What will happen if Yabban can connect to the mainframe?

**** SPOILER ALERT ****
Zaugg gives the readers another fine story set in the "Combat" Universe. I started reading this of a morning, and regretted it, cos it was a a work day and I had to stop reading to work. I kept wondering what was going to happen next all day. It was torture!
he author continues to world build and develop the characters that are the readers have come to love... and hate.
Second Jaaku attempts to take revenge on Kiriai by "promoting" Ojisan to the Southern burbs. Robbing Jitaku 'hood of his vital services just as plague outbreak starts.
Can Kiriai find a way to bring her Grandfather home, not just for her benefit, but to save the Jitaku 'zens from the plague ravaging the 'hood?
Grab this book and find out.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I can hardly wait to read Zaugg's next installment.
In the interest of transparency: I was given a free review copy of this book and I am voluntarily sharing this review. This is my own honest opinion.

Loved it

Took the bits I loved from the first 2 books and gave me more of it. In depth fight descriptions, levelling and RPG aspects took a bit more centre stage.
