This is book three of the World of Combat Dystopia series and continues with telling the life of a young female fighter called Kiriai. She has worked her way up the ranks from just being someone other fighters could practise against, to being an actual ‘scrapper’ as the fighters are called in this world, thru to now being a senior scrapper. In the last book, she saved the hoods boss from a poisoned knife attack and earned his favour. But none of this was enough to stop her grandfather, a well-known fixer and healer, from being taken to the main city by the big city boss. This should be seen as a great privilege, but Kiriai is still finding her feet as a fighter and her grandfather is the only family she has left.
She asks the hood boss to stop this, but he is powerless to stop the orders which come from above him. The city boss wants him as his personal healer, to ensure he doesn’t get poisoned, as others have been. Soon after this, a serious illness starts to affects most of the hoods population, even those of neighbouring hoods. It turns out this is a deadly plague, somewhat similar to ones in their distant history, which wiped out most of mankind, leaving just small pockets to survive after the plague and massive destruction of a nuclear war.
Their normal state of control over any illness, is to isolate those that seem ill for at least a week, until they either recover or die. Nothing is ignored and the populace have become fearful of any type of illness and isolates people just for a common cold! People are dying in droves and some could be saved by the simple work of a fixer like her grandfather and his apprentice, now fully fledged fixer in her own right, Isha. Kiriai and even her childhood friend Eigo have been assisting Isha in her battle against the plague and she has even managed to rope in Sento, her somewhat boyfriend to help, but only to carry supplies, as his fear of the plague is too high.
Kiriai sees a chance to get her grandfather back, to aide in helping those affected by the plague, but her hood boss cannot be seen to favour her actions. She has to do what no-one has ever done before and many think is impossible and challenge this distant city boss to a dispute resolution. She is rebelling against everything her hood colleagues and boss hold as sacred and going over his head and leaving them all vulnerable. The city boss has the power of political favour and high placed friends on his side and Kiriai and her team must overcome many hurdles in a short space f time, in their attempt to beat the city boss’ fighter. Not least is Kiriai’s ongoing training and her placing and experience as a scrapper.
I read the first book in the series, after receiving this one from BookSprout, and managed to get the prequel story as well. I sadly missed out on book two of the series, Combat Mind, as I had counted the prequel in as one of the series. This book can be read quite easily as a standalone book, as lots of information is given to you as part of the story, but I prefer to read a series in book order, to find out how characters develop over the series and what events occur as well. I’m really enjoying this series and I can’t wait to read the books which are to follow. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
