This is the fifth book in The Vorge Crew series.

Career military man Cavas Vellar has joined his older brother, Cathian, aboard The Vorge for one purpose -- to rescue their youngest littermate.

Their father has resorted to having him kidnapped to hide one of his most vile secrets. They need to go down onto a planet full of criminals, find Crath, and rescue him.

This mission is the most important one Cavas has ever led.

Jill was betrayed when Earth sold her into alien slavery. She owes her life to Cavas and the Vorge crew for taking her out of a cell and to their ship. When she learns why they were on that planet to begin with…she feels it’s her duty to help them find their missing brother. Even if it means losing her recently gained freedom.

One determined alien on a mission . . .
One woman who notices how sexy he is . . .
This is their story.

I had a rather short area here telling a little about me but then I had more than a few people ask me to expand it so... here goes. LOL. I'm a full time home 'supervisor' which is a nice word for saying I'm a housewife. I'm married happily, I met my dream guy 20 years ago, and we have 4 children. I live in Southern California and I can't function without iced coffee. I believe in romance, I've always been a daydreamer, and I'm a HUGE fan of books, always have been.

No, I didn't know that I always wanted to write. I inhaled books as a child. I read entire series (Pippi Longstocking, Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys, Trixie Beldon, The Borrowers, etc) in a matter of days at a time. By the time I was nine years old I had an adult library card where I visited often. I moved on to John Saul, Stephen King, Richard Laymon, Agatha Christie, and then found romance. I was hooked. I wrote poetry in my teens and then moved on to short stories. My first book was started after I read a real bomb of a book that ticked me off with really horrible characters and a plot that was shabby at best and I thought... I could do better. LOL.

I wrote my first book which will probably never see the light of day in the early 90's. I wrote a series of a few books from it. I'm a series fan! I kept writing for fun, wrote MANY books and then in 2009 I decided to try to get published. I wrote my first Sci Fi romance and Ral's Woman came to be. I submitted it and with a little tweaking, Ellorascave sent me an acceptance letter. It was kind of a 'Cinderella' experience for me. It's been a terrific ride so far and I'm really happy that I finally had the time to commit to writing full time. It's a dream come true.

A little bit rushed.
After reading this I got the impression that humans are considered (also by the Vorge crew) like prizes or like pets... Don't get me wrong, those man do love thir mates, but now also Crath wants his human! I found it a little demeaning and it irked me.

Guilt surfaced over being attracted to Jill. She’d gone through several traumas. The last thing she needed was a male feeling lust.

This could have easily been my favorite of all the books. Easily. But it was so short and rushed. There could have been more scenes on that awful planet with the arena. I know I’m being a perv but that I mean come on!!!! There needed to be more of that. I also wanted more of enslaved aliens I know the green giant Hulk like alien was beyond reasoning but what happened to him? What happened to the bad guy. Was he even arrested? Who does Crath work for? I also wanted more information about Cass, all we got was that he had an army cut haircut and that he loved the military.

I loved Cass and Jill together, I needed more of those moments. From the beginning he was thinking about her needs. I wanted more of that. And Jill was a badass. She was a fighter through and through. I mean it, this could have easily been my favorite instead I felt like I was cheated out of the greatest love story in outer space in an alien spaceship with actual life locking aliens (sharing of their second heart).

I know there’s another book afterwards, but are these stories getting shorter or are my expectations getting bigger?

Felt extremely rushed. I also disliked how Cavas seemingly had no interest in Jill until was interested in her. I felt zero connection between them. Even in the end his grand life lock proposal was a “you’re hot and I like you” rather than any emotional affection. So now they’re hunting for a human for Crath because he lost out? Humans aren’t puppies and it really felt like this dude was all in for the wrong reasons. The past leading lads and ladies at least bonded and cared for each other. Cavas didn’t even show attraction to Jill until she was half naked so it’s def not her beautiful eyes that hooked him.

Probably just going to give this series a farewell kiss.

Me duro tan poco!

tenor

This was okay but not as good as some of her other books. The relationship lacked some development and thats what really made this book more average than amazing.

Oh, Laurann Dohner, you are driving me nuts with these cheesy resolves that leave me dissatisfied, and with sugar headaches.

The Vorge Crew series had a great start. Cathian and Nara kicked it off with a fantastically smutty relationship founded by Cathian's need to have a female prepare him for his heat. And then Dovis and Mari came along and, I loved the dynamic and romance of these two. Dovis is such a grump, and Mari is such a sweetheart.

But the author has a formula, and some of her habits make me crazy. The FC is always betrayed by a prominent male in their lives, cheating husbands, conniving fathers, controlling employers. They are always threatened with sexual assault or experienced a sexually inappropriate advance from some creeper. And LD favors names that end in vowels. The Vorge females are Nara, Mari, Sara, Lilly, and Jill--Oh, and if they don't end in vowels, they tend to be somewhat derivative of one another. So Lilly and Jillian.

But it's much more than that.

The VLG series: Dusti, Betina, Kira, Glenda, Jadee, Gerri, Jillian (again), Angel, Mandy, Emma, and Shay.
New Species series: Ellie, Trisha, Tammy, Jessie, Becca, Lauren, Zandy, Allie, Beauty, Joyce, Jeanie, Kat, Vanni, Dana, Candi, Melinda, and Mary.
Cyborg Seduction series: Mira, Rena, Dawn, Megan, Jill (again), Charlie, Cyan, Eve, Venice, Nala, and Mickala.
Zorn Warriors series: Ariel, Casey, Brenda, Shanna, and Lynn.

And with those names, she has created some fantastically LOL moments like when Hero says that 'They can't take my Candi!'.

I used to call these Dohner's Sins. Adding to the above repetitions was the fact that everyone wears sweats, eats an alarming amount of steak, drinks a more disturbing amount of soda, and all the bad guys named after local-yokel names like Roy, Jim-Bob, Carl, Billy, or Decker. I grew up with rural-type names, and it's insulting that these people are backward rapists and prejudice zealots.

Now to Cavas--Jillian lost her job on earth because her male boss propositioned her creating untenable work conditions. After becoming unemployed, the patriarchal Earth government sold her into slavery to aliens. Purchasing Jillian was a bug-type alien who used slaves for sexual pleasure--fighting against a sexual assault she fleed, and when caught, she was imprisoned in a pleasure house, a future full of more abuse.

Her life saved when Cavas comes looking for his brother Crath. Indebted to Cavas and the Vorge Crew, she offers herself as a sacrificial accomplice to a jailbreak. She returns to a planet that she escaped from where she again encounters sexual humiliation and threat.

But just when it can't be triter, there is an abrupt 'Final Act' in the last twenty or so percent Cavas deems Jillian 'sexually compatible,' and he is going to mate and 'keep her.' It reads like LD is running up to word count limit and just had to stuff in a romance for the ending. As she writes more novels, distilling her books down to the same events, but names change--and probably the females' names will end in A, E, I, O, U, and sometimes Y this happens more frequently. (see Lavos)

Why do I continue to read her books?

Laurann Dohner was one of the first authors I read when I moved to the city I reside in now; in a certain way, reading her books is a bit of a tribute and tradition--one that becomes less enjoyable with time. I pay full price for her books that most of the time, don't appeal to me these days.

I am hoping that maybe I can help you not waste your time and money on this one. LD's older books are better. Instead of this, try something like Obsidian, His Purrfect Mate, Lorn, or Burning Up Flint. Go back to her Riding the Raines books. They are gold.

Rescued by two brothers

Another member of The Vorge crew falls hard for the new human in his life. I love how the author brought these two together and made them slightly resistant to the pull. She filled the pages of this book full of action and danger right to a HEA that was meant to be. I do wish we could have been a little more involved in the capture of dear ole dad, but it was not meant to be. I can’t wait to read all about the last two crew members finding their life-locks, although I feel like no matter what Marrow wants, she needs an even more over the top alpha male then the brothers are.

I adored this book, another installment of The Vorge. The story is so creative and flows effortlessly. I have been enjoying the variety of aliens described and how their abilities are blended into the plot and elements. It may be better to read the first in the series before this one but I do not believe so. I did read the others but Cavas and Jill seem to have a story all of their own. I felt this was one of the author's best. At one point I was laughing out loud. Watch out for those 'Pods'!

Cavas is on a mission to find and rescue his brother Crath. What he finds instead is a human slave named Jill. He's determined to help Jill especially when he finds out that she's seen Crath.
Good story but the chemistry was a little lacking. When Cavas hears that Crath . A little too much insta-love for me.

2020 QUARANTINE READ: 4.76 STARS!!

I like both ML and FL. Well, knowing this type of romance is insta love/insta lust but I like it - short, fluffy and fulfilling (I don't mind the weird or somewhat impossible interactions but this is their world/solar system/etc so why not coconut) 😅 FL is likable and it's understandable that she doesn't trust immediately. ML is ripped and hawwt 😍 😁

Overall, I like this one. Next is Crath's story. I also wonder if Marrow has a story of her own. She deserves to have one.

Firstly I have to start off by saying I'm a HUGE Laurann Dohner fan. I've read her New Species series more than twice it's one of my all time favourites. But.... lately everytime I've picked up one of her new releases I've been left feeling disappointed and this one was no exception. It starts off ok with plenty going on to keep you entertained what with the missions to find Cavas brother. We also get to recap with all the previous characters which was great and we even get a nice surprise from one of the couples. Now if this story had just been about the action I wouldn't have an issue with it but its supposed to be a romance and that's where I felt it fell short. There was no love connection what so ever when they first met, no love/lust at first sight or even desire. He just rescues her then hands her over to medical and that's it, he doesn't even appear to trust her at first as he didn't know her. The only reaction we see from him is when she shows up in her slave costume and he basically ogles her body. Its obvious he finds her physically attractive but he keeps sending her mixed signals which was annoying. He seemed to not want a relationship with her until his brother proclaimed his interest in her which was kind of shitty of him if you ask me. Then suddenly he wants her desperately going a full 360° on her for no apparent reason. At least the author had her questioning him outright about what was going on with him, whether he was being nice to her as a friend or as a woman because he was confusing as hell. Then we have the jumping straight into bed part which wouldn't be so bad if it was a hot, fiery cant keep your hands off each other passionate moment. But alas it's anything but, we get a conversation of him explaining what a life-lock is, his heats, fertility and everything over the rainbow for her to give him a chance and basically have sex with him to see if they are compatible. Btw she even tells him that there is more than just being compatible in bed to make a relationship work (she hit the nail on the head with that one). Unfortunately the story plays out with not much substance as they shag like rabbits for a whole day then life-lock the very next day just like that. So for these reasons I found their love story not very believable and rushed taking second place to the action instead.

Bring back the writer that wrote Fury.
THAT was wild and untamed.

I used to love Laurann. Now, there’s so much freaking dialogue in her books.

Everything is discussed- almost like a disclaimer. No more element of surprise. Going out on a mission? More discussion about the mission than actual adventure. Sex? More disclaimers before engagement. Tragic background? Discussion about it goes on and on.

MY POINT IS: A GOOD WRITER DOES. Rather than talking about things to explain them, SHOW IT. Emotions are wild, and untamed: not logical. I get enough logic in my Math classes.

Laurann, this is not to insult you. The worlds you create are exciting, but lately it seems you’re trying to copy paste the same elements in every story...
You stopped building. Characters, the story’s World and the love.
It’s all the same now.

I was excited to start reading Cavas's story but now I'm disappointed. What would I say?
First, there wasn't any real connection between Cavas and Jill. He saw her and nothing happened at all even a tiny flame of feelings. I thought maybe their relationship will develop through the story but NOOOO. After over 50% of the events he suddenly wanted Jill because he noticed his brother's interest in her. Second, Cavas and Jill weren't having any time together for real speech or connection most of the time they were with other people except in bed. Even their bond was weak and with no foundation like the other couples in the crews.
I love L.D so much so I tried to get into this story, but I couldn't.

Note: I am not putting this in my “romance” shelf, I do not consider it as having the elements of a romance novel.

I like the first 75% of the book, it was different, had some more adventure, it was full of sex and no plot. I actually thought it might need to spill over into the next book to wrap of the story. But alas, no, the last 25% is one dub/non-con sex scene and Cavas badgering Jill to life-lock because he wants his own human pet. It was actually pretty gross compared to the rest of the series. Cavas and Crath talk about Jill like she’s a stray dog they both want, one because he saw her first (yes, childish) and the other because he rescued her (so he feels like she belongs to him).
Neither care about what she wants. Even when the two brothers have decided Cavas “gets her” he just up and tells her they’re going to life-lock even as she protests.
The last 25% just had a really icky feel, from treating an ex-slave like a stray dog, to rough sex and not going slow after they’d agreed on slow, no talk on consent, he doesn’t even care to know that she’s a virgin, or anything else about her for that matter. A lot of talk about finding other humans to keep too, which just felt wrong in terms of the series.

They don’t fall in love, even at 97% there is a comment that they fell in lust. I would call this a happy for now (HFN) and not HEA. There is zero connection felt between them.

Very disappointing.

I really love this series! I wish the next one was already out, I don’t want to stop reading them.

Cavas is brother or littermate, to Cathian. Their brother Crath was kidnapped, orchestrated by their horrible father. They had an idea of where he was being held they just needed to plan a rescue mission. During one of their recon missions to the planet where Crath was being held, Cavas found another human female beaten and behind bars.

She eventually helps him find his brother and sparks his interest at the same time. Again, it was quick but satisfying read. I love this world. I can’t wait for Crath’s story.

I love this series. All the guys and women (aliens) are all so different either by species or where their from but they are also much the same. They have all gone through something that has made them outcasts among their own people but on the vorge they are all family. Family sticks together and fights together. I was so happy when this book came out and I’m anxiously waiting for Crath’s book already!! Needless to say I’m addicted.

It seems like this story is stuck in a loop of alien, rescue, mate. I was hoping for more but I suppose that the template is now set. Another rescue mission, another mating. Ah well it was good for a quick read in between real books.

This was just awful.

This was just awful.
Where o where is the Laurann Dohner I first met when I discovered New Species with “Valiant” all those years ago ?
I know times change and ppl change but we hope the things and ppl and places we love will only get better with time .
Sadly that’s not always the case. I know Ms.Dohner like has all has had her struggles and I’m not going there but what helped me hold out hope when year after year passed w/no New Species came was that writing was like breathing for Ms.Dohner and as much as the continued broken promises about NS hurt I hoped one day my patience would be rewarded .
Now I know this isn’t NS but when you fall in love w/a writers work , you fall for their unique voice. All writers have a way of telling a story ,that only they can. You start to miss them . You want to hear them and even if it’s not the song you want to hear it’s still their voice and it can be hard to stay away. No matter much you might be disappointed by them and their actions l
Deep sigh.
But less is more has become the name of the game it feels to me. More books but a lot less quality than we got when I first discovered her all those years ago.
Sadly this story feels like the new standard from what I’ve seen.
No real depth or layers, and more of a cookie cutter formula than the elves at Keebler can produce.
I just ,I just don’t get this story at all. The MC’s should have been treated for severe whiplash in their 0-60 turn around in ideals and plans. Cavas starts off as a pretentious arrogant snob, who’s quick to make snap judgements on the crew and assumes anyone not male and over loaded with muscles is useless. I.e. human females. And the skittish mousy looking Midge MUST be a spy because she soo obviously a loner and keeps to herself .
What ? Huh?
Right, isn’t that what they teach you in “spy school” but be an obvious anti social loner and stick out like a sore thumb ,that’s how you get all the good intel ?
Cue eye roll 🙄
We see how he got his job as a military thru smarts and cunning obviously.
Then he goes off planet w/the human he thought was weak and ugly just hours ago and now suddenly he’s drooling for her. Ok.
Jill is the same one minute she’s telling us how everyone on earth seems evil. Men let woman die and gee own government sold into sexual slavery . But since “aliens” bought her she can’t trust “aliens” but she’ll trust these women because their human . Wait. What? Didn’t the human government sell your dumb A into all this to begin with ? Didn’t some decent”aliens” just rescue your dumb A? Contradictory ? Jill ? Nooooooo!
Then s after supposedly being soo traumatized by everything she’s been thru, we find her down on the slave planet squirming on Cavas’s lap all in the name to save his brother and somehow all their lives.
Suddenly Cavas when the return no only does he have to have the once useless human . He’s willing to fight his brother for her. Who is just desperately have a human. Seemingly any human will do and both are very eager to “mate”.
Dear lord.
Shakes head.
Barely 24 hours since meeting Jill, Cavas now HAS. TO. HAVE. HER. And is pressuring her to mate him,and is desperate to get her addicted to him sexually soo she’ll have him.
And she’s all for it !
Seriously !?!?!?
No, just no. I’ve had enough.
I give up.
Can’t do it any more.

OK.

Did I enjoy reading this? Yes...but it was the same kind of enjoyment one gets when eating a nostalgic treat and realizing it just doesn't taste the same anymore and coats your tongue all funny and leaves a chemical taste in your mouth.

The Vorge crew is losing their shine. Things started to go downhill with York, but I've been clinging on hoping it was just a slump. These are pretty simple and trite tales, nothing too complicated to digest, just straight forward and high on the cheese factor. They're perfect for an enjoyable evening, kind of like a made-for-TV movie you've seen a dozen times before and like the company of. They're comfortable. Safe. Familiar. Pretty ridiculous in a fun way.

Cavas tried to be heavier on action, focusing on finding the youngest of the Vellar litter in a race against their comically caricaturish villain father who is apparently out to dig the deepest hole for himself...but instead of Crath, Cavas finds Jill. He shows subtle but mild interest in her, nothing that reads as love. So hey, it's not insta-love, but it's also fairly easy to dismiss when that's kind of what is expected. These books are not long enough to really develop a relationship slowly, however. And so...It happens.

What is It?

Oh, It is something.

Since York, these books have borderline treated the FMC as a commodity that was picked up and feels like she's interchangeable with any other woman, but this book took it places when

Will I keep reading The Vorge after this? I'm not sure and leaning towards no. I do not see it getting better and think this might be a good place to part ways with them. I would rather leave on a mostly-enjoyed it than a hate read. I can always revisit Dovis when I feel The Vorge itch.

A Jill é forte, decidida, leal e honesta!

We’re back in the nebulous future, where a corrupt Earth, with an excess of women is in control of the human population.
The crew of the Vorge, now has Cathian’s littermate Cavas on board, and when he rescues a human female whilst looking for his other littermate, Crath, well the rest is inevitable!
The stories in this series, are almost serial like in their flow. They’re set in the future, but it’s a little dystopian in flavour, and the people in charge (alien or human) are not always nice. The books are short, and so make for a nice quick read- perfect for those who don’t always have time for a longer book.
If you enjoyed the rest of the series, you’ll like this addition, and be happily waiting for Crath’s book (next) and then Marrow’s story (we’ve all been waiting for hers!)
