An ancient papyrus describing the death of Cleopatra reveals the secret location of the lost tomb of Alexander the Great, supposedly filled with priceless treasure. Elizabeth Harker sends the Project team to Egypt, to find out if the tomb and treasure still exist. It doesn't take long before people start dying. A secret cult has worshipped Alexander as the Sun God for thousands of years, and they're not about to let unbelievers desecrate the tomb of their god. They'll stop at nothing to prevent it. Nick and Selena are getting older, their bodies starting to show the effects of too many battles and too many wounds. With two children to worry about, maybe it's time to quit. But neither one of them is quite ready to give up the adrenaline fueled lifestyle they've been addicted to for years. It's a decision they need to make soon. But first they have to get through this mission, with no guarantee they'll survive.
I like Barbados rum, old, fast motorcycles, playing guitar and books by authors like Michael Connelly, Robert Crais, Alex Berenson, Craig Johnson and Lee Child. I write action/adventure thrillers. WHITE JADE is the first in a series featuring the PROJECT, a small, elite counter-terrorism unit. There are currently 23 books in the series. href="http://www.goodreads.com">ale...
I haven't read the other books in this series, but I found this book to be quite enjoyable. There is lots of action and danger in this short little novel. Very easy to read and you'll want to keep reading to see what happens next. I would recommend it.
I have read all of the other books in this series, and enjoyed them. This one, however, just seemed silly in places. Why would anyone set off C4 knowing there is an encampment of terrorists nearby. Stupid rookie mistake. Not the authors best work.
The Lair of Anubis (The Project #20) by Alex Lukeman
This is a stand-alone book. You don't need to read any of the prior books to enjoy it.
It's 12 August of the year 30 BCE. Cleopatra stands next to Marc Anthony's body as she gets ready to kill herself and make plans for her burial.
Back in the present, Professor Lewis Freeman is at the NY Natural History Museum and makes a rare discovery: an ancient scroll in coded hieroglyphics. He takes the scroll to Elizabeth Harker, head of the Harker Group, a private consulting project. Nick Carter and his wife, Selena Connor - who both work for Harker - are able to translate the papyrus. It tells of the story of Cleopatra's death and that her body was buried in Alexander the Great's tomb somewhere in coastal Egypt.
Selena's half-sister, Valentina Antipova, comes out of protective custody and visits Selena. She was Vladimir Orlov (current Russian Federation President)'s lover and a member of the assassin leg of the SVR, Russia's new KGB. She defected to the West and is now a target of the SVR and Orlov's rage.
After an attempt on Valentina's life by a Russian agent, the group embarks on a secret mission to Egypt to find Alexander's tomb and possibly Cleopatra's final resting place.
It doesn't take long before people start dying. A secret cult has worshipped Alexander as the Sun God for thousands of years, and they're not about to let unbelievers desecrate the tomb of their god. They'll stop at nothing to prevent it.
There is also a group of jihadis near the tomb site that need to be dealt with.
Nick and Selena are getting older, their bodies starting to show the effects of too many battles and too many wounds. With two children to worry about, maybe it's time to quit. But neither one of them is quite ready to give up the adrenaline-fueled lifestyle they've been addicted to for years. They are worried about their children and are thinking of making this their last mission. But first, they have to get through this ordeal, with no guarantee they'll survive.
Narrated from the third-person point of view, this is a fast-paced, wonderful read. The characters are very well developed and the plot is full of twists and turns that will grab you until the end of the story. My only complaint is that the author kept changing the point of view without any warning and that made me slow down.
Nevertheless, I enjoyed it very much and recommend it highly.
The author is one of my favorite because he writes well, and he does a lot of research for his novels. While sometimes changing history slightly in order to fit the plot well, it is usually done in a well thought out manner. I have enjoyed the characters from the Project, and he continues to write interesting stories. The latest novel, however, I felt was a little weak. While the historical story was done well, it almost felt like the characters were "going through the motions".
While not the strongest novel in the series, it was still readable and kept my interest. I was just disappointed because I felt it should be more, and that a lot of story was left on the field.
Review by Gloria Lakritz Sr Reviewer and Review Chair 5 Stars Book: The Lair of Anubis Series: The Project Series Book #20 Author: Alex Lukeman Publisher: Alex Lukeman Genre: Military Intrigue Rated: Mature Pages: 248 Release Date: March 6. 2020
Ahh Alex Lukeman, the 20th book and I am still cheering the Project Series!! How many years have we been together, and you still find ways to whet my appetite, spinning foreign intrigue, danger and the American way?
A simple visit from a museum curator asking for advice for a translation brings our gang together on another critical mission. We now are familiar with our team and it is a good reunion catching up on what they guys are doing now.
We are whisked off to Egypt to check out the papyrus, that Selena has worked on. The group are all complaining of getting old, but jump at the chance to follow Elizabeth Harker and the team to check out the possibility of finding a hidden tomb.
Again Mr, Lukeman sends the reader with the team into dangers not only in the desert but at home. Our author also tempts the reader with a few chapters from the Twenty First book….the next in the series!!!....Cannot wait!!
Imagine the burial place of Alexander the Great and Cleopatra being at the same burial site is amazing! Harker's Group, formerly the Project Team, is going to Egypt to find the burial site if it exists and to see if there is a treasure which they do not want to call into the wrong hands like the jihadists. Also Valentina has returned to Washington D.C., and the Russians are sending someone to assassinate her. Alex Lukeman brilliantly takes the reader on a journey to Egypt where there is a cult or religious group that worship the Sun God, Alexander the Great, and they do not want the burial site found. If you like suspenseful, intriguing thrillers, you will like this book. It is unputdownable! Happy reading! 😊
Alex Lukeman's book does not disappoint as the adventure, danger, and action continue in this latest installment of the Project Series. The project team is sent on a mission to determine the location of one of history's most sought-after ancient sites, the Tomb of Alexander the Great. Alexander's Tomb has been reportedly been filled with immense treasure, making the location extraordinarily important. To add to the drama and excitement, an ancient cult is determined to keep the secrets of the tomb and will do anything to stop the project from succeeding. The action is non-stop and thrilling and the book is a page-turner from the start.
This book was outstanding! Enjoyed the plot with multiple veins running through it. Found the story fascinating with Egyptian history during the reign of Ptolemy1, Alexander the Great, and Cleopatra. He also draws on current events. It is good to see the Project - now Harker - group back together again. Please keep them coming! Since reading the preview chapters of the next book, I am anxiously waiting for it!
Anubis, one of the oldest gods in Egypt. The helper of those who died. Alexander the Great was buried with treasures of immense value. His burial site unknown. It's discovery has opened up a proverbial can of worms. An extremely secret society will stop at nothing to protect it's secret. People will die. Nonstop action, an excellent read!! Enjoyed immensely!!
Full of action and adventure, this book is an exciting read. The characters are interesting, amusing and believable, as is the story. The flow is good, so you won't want to put this book down once you get started. While this book stands alone, the series promises to offer lots of great reading as you follow the characters through their action filled lives. Made for filming!
Another excellent read in the series, this one running in stereo, with 2 stories (one a family issue) running side by side. Both are excellent, but the presence of both waters the other one down a little,
As good a read as ever, and still hungry for the next in the series, but this one suffered from having 2 issues resolved, neither culminating in the usual big bang, and thus not quite complete.
I have read this whole series by Alex Lukeman and really enjoy his continuity of characters. I appreciate the brief introductions of the members involved in the stories, and I will keep coming back til the end of the series, which I hope isn't planned for the near future!
In this story, we find Nick, Selena and the rest of "The Project" group entangled in a riddle about Alexander "The Great" (where is he buried), mixed in with Cleopatra, a High Priestess (part of a cult) and some russian agents out to kill Valentina Antipova (half sister to Selena). What better excuse to read this exciting story.
Museum curator asking for translation, we have an old Egyptian papyrus. Another intriguing plot and with good narration. A winning combination of intrigue. Given audio for my voluntary review and my honest opinion
The story was interesting ,entertaining and well written. The main characters seemed real and their situations a believable. The over all effect was well done.
I loved this adventure searching for a God King. Also loved that this was a twofer - two stories in the same book. The Project Team is on the move again, this time to Egypt. Enter jihadists, cults and what have you and you have all thrills and cills for a while.
I really enjoyed this series! I love a bit of history mixed in with fiction. Plus there's some science fiction and mysticism in there too. Really good books. I can't wait for book 21!
This book had no depth to the characters, it aroused no emotion in me except to hurry and finish it. It would have been a good read for fifth or sixth grade.
Nick and the crew are back for more adventures, but will this be the end of the Project? This is twice now that Nick and Selena's kids have been put in danger, and the crew is getting older and feeling the effects of all the times they have been shot and such. But when Selena is asked again to translate a papyrus for a museum it throws them back into there adrenaline filled life that fuels them while looking for the tomb of Alexander the Great and Cleopatra.
This is another wonderful book by Alex Lukeman, full of action, suspense and danger galore. I love these books and this series, the characters have become my book family, it is escapism at its best for me. The wonderful narrator Jack de Golia has transported me to there missions and this audio is no exception. I love that I can lose myself in his voices for the characters and it's like I am right there with them on the mission fighting, hurting, and laughing with them. This is a great book and a awesome audio, I hope he keeps on writing them because the day it comes to a end will be a sad day indeed.
