This is an interesting book, arguing that some sinus problems may actually be caused by inflammation related to acid reflux. The writer is part of a group of doctors I go to, and he’s highly respected in this area.

He rates the acidity of many popular goods, so that you can stay with lower acid foods. Also, he provides recipes for foods, like salad dressings and tomato sauce, that would be problematic if bought from the store.

The recipes are pretty simple, and if you have the symptoms described, it’s probably worth checking out this way of eating. You might lose a little weight, but you’ll feel a lot better.

The beet ketchup recipe has me wild! I can’t believe it tastes even better than regular ketchup and is 100% healthier.

I recommend this book if you’re suffering from stomach issues particularly those related to reflux or gastritis. It’s straight to the point, the photographs and the recipe layouts are clear and aesthetic, perfect for someone desperate to take control over their health.

Of course, if your condition lasts longer than 3 months you should IMMEDIATELY consult a health care practitioner. You might have an ulcer (caused from a viral infection or even from allergy/food intolerance) or worse (cancer). Go get an endoscopy right away, don’t believe that “anti-acids” will cure you they’re only a crutch until you can get to the root of the problem.

Anyways, this beet ketchup and many other recipes are tasty on their own and don’t require you to be sick to enjoy them. I’m sharing my favourite recipe below.

Ingredients:

4 raw beets
2 tbsp olive oil
1 cup chopped yellow onion
1 tsp salt (Celtic)
2 tbsp vinegar (I use white wine, yum!)


Steps:

1) Preheat oven 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Wrap beets in aluminium foil. Bake for 1-1.5 hrs (yes! If they’re not thoroughly cooked the ketchup will not be as pleasant and smooth).
2) Remove beets from the oven, let them cool and unwrap. Remove skins wth your hands once cooled. Chop beets.
3) In a small skillet heat olive oil and add onions over medium heat. Cook for 2 min then add water (1/2 cup). Let it cook for 5 min or until water has evaporated and onion is soft, don’t forget to stir occasionally!
4) Put all ingredients in food processor and pulse until completely smooth. Can be stored in fridge for max 2 weeks.

The Acid Watcher Cookbook... a variety of pleasing recipes ranging from snacks and appetizers to main courses, smoothies, and desserts. Reasoning behind why certain foods are preferred in an acid decreased diet is thoughtfully explained. Fresh, full of vegetables and flavors, these recipes are inspired to allow acid reflux sufferers to rejoice and eat delicious food again, but the dishes fulfill anyone. Impressive takes on old favorites and new presentations.

Good information overall with easy recipes that work for someone with GERD. I love that recipes are categorized into "Healing" and "Maintenance." I also like that some of the recipes feature vegan food items such as tofu and incorporate vegan cooking techniques like using cashews for a creamy dressing. My biggest issue with the book is arbitrary food rules like only eating non-GMO soy, 100% whole wheat bread, and Keltic salt.

The introduction is great, with clear guidelines on what to eliminate and what to include. However, the rest of the book feels needlessly complex and honestly inaccessible for most people due to the overly-specific and expensive items required. Like not just chicken but "organic air-chilled chicken." Is the reason I have reflux, because my chicken isn't air-chilled? Why is all the salt Celtic? I'm clearly not the target audience for this book.

I've had terrible heartburn for most of my adult life and have learned how to manage it, but was curious to see if this had anything new to offer. It didn't, really. If you're already managing a condition like reflux then you probably already know most of this. I found the recipes disappointingly simple for what I'd have preferred. Very meh reading experience.

Following this diet for my 18 year old son with LPR. Only a few recipes jumped out at us to try and were pretty good especially the tahini cookies since sugar is not allowed and treats are a rarity! He is improving every day. We are following the original book more than this cookbook but both are helpful

I may revise my rating up or down after I determine whether this diet alleviates my symptoms. I did find the reference to Celtic sea salt annoying. It’s expensive and not measurably better or more healthy than Trader Joe’s sea salt. The writing is also a real clunker, but I’ll let that go if the diet helps.

I wish there were more recipes, and as someone with dairy and fish intolerances, it would’ve been cool to see more substitutions.

That said, I’ve been really surprised at the quality of the recipes. It’s nothing that blows a 5 star restaurant out of the water, but there are some decent dishes in there.

Simple and clear intro, describing the rationale behind the recipes - for example, I found it interesting to learn about neutralizing the acidity of certain potentially triggering foods through the combination of ingredients together. There are clear tables showing the pH levels of different ingredients, and I like that recipes are identified as suitable for the “Healing” or “Maintenance” phase. Pictures are nice and recipes give some good ideas, though vary in time and complexity.

Kind of like wearing more than one timepiece -- I have three acid reducing cookbooks and they give different warnings..... haven't gotten relief yet. :^(

There was some useful information in the front of the book, but almost all of the recipes contain things I cannot eat. I am glad I got it from the library rather than paying for it.
