How to Use Decodable Books to Teach Reading: Systematic Decodable Books Help Developing Readers, including Those with Dyslexia, Learn to Read with Phonics ... ON A LOG Parent and Teacher Guides Book 2)

Rate this book
Sixty-six percent of U.S. eighth graders are not proficient readers because their teachers have not been taught how to teach reading using evidence-based methods. Up to 20% of children have dyslexia. Few receive the individualized teaching they need from their schools.Scientific research has shown that the most effective method for teaching reading is explicit, systematic phonics beginning with the foundational Pre-Reading skills called Phonological Awareness. Sadly, most U.S. teachers have not been taught this method of teaching reading even though it is the most effective method for teaching all students, including students with dyslexia, to read.To help parents, teachers, and homeschooling parents who want to teach their children using an evidence-based, effective method, Pamela Brookes, the mother of a child with dyslexia, discusses their family's daily routine as she teaches her daughter to read using the decodable DOG ON A LOG Books series. As the author of DOG ON A LOG Books, Pamela also shares how to choose where in the series to start. She shares how she teaches each of the phonics rules used in the book series along with the reasons for teaching the syllable types and handwriting. Although this booklet is meant to guide parents and teachers using DOG ON A LOG Books, the information can be adapted and applied to any systematic series of decodable books.

How to Use DOG ON A LOG Books to Teach Reading is edited by Dr. Nancy Mather, a professor in learning disabilities, reading, and writing to make sure it follows the scientific research on teaching reading.

This edition includes information on Steps 1 to 10 of the DOG ON A LOG phonics rules. Additional steps will be added as the future decodable chapter books are created.

All DOG ON A LOG Books follow an Orton-Gillingham/systematic phonics-based sequence. You can download printable gameboards, flashcards, and other literacy materials from the DOG ON A LOG Books website.

This is the 2nd book by Brookes that provides information for teaching dyslexic children. It provides helpful information on how to use decodable books to use for anyone who works with struggling readers and dyslexic readers. The books use, “The Dog on A Log” book series which is based on a systematic explicit approach to teach reading. This approach, phonological awareness, is the only way they will become skilled readers.

Since 66% of U.S. 8th graders are not proficient readers because their teachers have not been taught to teach evidence-based reading and 20% have dyslexia to differing degrees, few children receive individual teaching needed for them to excel. The author shares her experience with parents on how they can use this method to teach children to read. The books in her series were used for her daughter and they follow an Orton-Gillingham phonics-based sequence. This is a very informative book.

Free on Kindle which is awesome. I just preferred her first guide book "Teaching a Struggling Reader--One Mom's Experience With Dyslexia", which is also free on Kindle.
