Twenty-two-year-old Garnet Adams longs to marry and have a houseful of children. Forced to support her widowed mother, she embraces her role as a teacher, although the Carrie Town board of education's rules for female teachers leave no opportunity for a social life. She contents herself playing the violin at church.
Tall, bearded, and rough around the edges, Deputy Noah Scott would rather hunt than socialize. Garnet thinks he’s a rude, insensitive drifter, and Noah's sure the last person he'd want to court is a schoolmarm--especially with her unladylike sneeze. As the needs of her students bring them together, opposites seem to attract until a certain Christmas present derails their future.
Kimberly Grist is married to her high school sweetheart, Nelson, who is a pastor in Griffin, Georgia. She and her husband have three adult sons, one with Down syndrome, and she has a passion to encourage others in offering a special needs ministry in the church. Kim is also a grandmother and proud to be a child of the living God. She feels called to help and encourage others and to share experiences both good and bad in order to be the witness that God would have us to be. Kim has enjoyed writing since she was a young girl, however, began writing her first novel in 2017. Inspired by so many things life has to offer one of which includes her oldest son’s diagnosis of cancer she finds it especially gratifying to write a happy ending. “Suffering is, of course, is my least favorite thing. My objective is not to discuss my struggles specifically but to combine a love of history with biblical principles to produce a clean historical Christian romance, that shows how God uses adversity for our good in ways we may never expect.”
Combining, History, Humor, and Romance with an emphasis on Faith, Friends and Good Clean Fun, Rebecca’s Hope, a work of fiction that reminds us how God can use adversity to strengthen us and draw us closer to Him and give us the desires of our heart in ways we may never expect.
Fans of historical romance set in late 19th-century will enjoy this beautiful story of love and forgiveness. As the unfortunate circumstances of Rebecca's childhood are revealed, we discover a heroine who is both resilient and kind. Rebecca and Sam's love story will have readers rooting for their happy ending

I loved this short book. It gave us a bird's eye view of life as a teacher in the 1800's. Each chapter is headed by one of the rules for teachers. Garnet Adams was a young woman teaching school to support herself, her mother, and an invalid aunt. The time is near Christmas and the story revolves around a small town's celebration of the Savior's birth and how it's residents realize the true meaning of Christmas - a love story of it's own. Garnet and Deputy Scott struggle to obey the rules for teachers while getting to know one another and finding their own happiness. This book was given to me by the author and the opinions expressed here are my own. Excellant work, Kimberly.
Christian, historical, romance. So the story is what you’d expect of a settlement town of 1890’s between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Except for the Rules for Teachers which was more than an eye-opener. The double standard – male teachers could court and marry, but not female teachers who had to quit teaching if they married. But the school board who established these rules seemed bent on keeping the females under lock and key and the watchful eye of clergy and the sheriff’s office, as well as the high standing members of society. Garnet’s teacher’s heart rings true: sacrificing to meet the physical, emotional, societal and economic needs of her students as well as their educational needs. The text, a long short story, has little time to develop psychological needs of the main characters, though they are revealed as the back stories come out. The narrator voices the characters well, with sensitivity. However, since the romance progresses quickly at one point, I wished for more emotional nuance and slower, contemplative pacing, to let the depth of meaning of the words and the vulnerability of the characters be more real – not so matter-of-fact and inevitable. Grists’s writing could have included more character depth, especially at that point. I listened twice, and the second time, especially appreciated the Rules for Teachers organization around which each chapter was hung. I recommend for a quick listen, that incorporates the quirkiness of children and their impact on all of our lives. I received a free copy of this audiobook, and am pleased to submit this honest review.
As a teacher, Garnet has a lot of rules to follow if she wants to keep her position. Falling in love and being courted is quite difficult when one has so many restrictions… I missed reading about the development of the characters’ feelings. I had the impression that they went from fighting their attraction to confessing their love without letting us in on the progress in between. Nonetheless, the plot is well built, and this is a lovely story that flows easily. It’s short enough to be enjoyed even when one does not really have time to read but sufficiently long to be able to relax. Enjoy getting to know Garnet!
Each chapter has one of the rules that schoolmarms had to follow (which are hard to believe by today's standards). Garnet has little choice but to work as a school teacher in order to support her mother and her aunt.
The deputy in town, Noah, isn't interested in schoolmarms or courting. Garnet isn't what he expected, though, and he finds himself increasingly intrigued. The story is sweet and has an enjoyable, romantic happily-ever-after
It is no wonder that teachers were considered spinsters in the 1800’s, the rules they had to live by worked to keep them single. Kimberley Grist brings us a story of Garnet, the small town teacher, and Noah, the deputy sheriff. Oh the rules such as home before dark, no riding in a buggy with a man unless they were father or brother, no bright clothes, made courtship tough unless you had help from good friends or relatives. This story is heartwarming, humorous and romantic. Who knew a lost gift could be romantic? I enjoyed this story.
A great story with fun characters. This is wonderful story that is just a feel good make you smile story. The children and the Christmas pageant was so cute and funny. A wonderful town that takes care of its own and just makes this story sweet. A clean romance with God in the mix made it a beautiful kind of love. Such a fantastic read!
A lost Christmas gift, a shaven face, misunderstandings lend the storyline a good read. Enjoy previous characters from the series and new one. Would like to find out if Victoria ever get her chance.
One of my favorites in the series! I fell in love not only with the heroine and her special guy, but also her little students! Wonderful plot and characters. I found myself laughing out loud!
Excellent story with a small town teacher named Garnet and one of the town deputies. Watch an expected romance grown around the life and rules a teacher had to follow.
Rules for Teachers Sweet, romantic, and funny story of the young teacher and a handsome deputy with some facial hair lol I enjoyed it and it confirmed that I wouldn’t survive as a teacher in 1890s.
Garnet's Gift Christian Historical Romance By: Kimberly Grist Narrated by: Lorana Hoopes
A book like this makes me think about how simple life was back in the 1800's. Garnet is wishing for her house full of kids, but while she has the burden of responsibility to help her widowed mother, she will enjoy her job as a teacher. The Sheriff in town, Noah has taken a liking to her, but he is not looking for a relationship. Theses two enjoy getting to know each other without texting and cellphones, but by spending time together,.. as friends. But we can feel the chemistry as it builds. And when a misunderstanding comes to light, we will see if their budding relationship is strong enough to handle it! I really enjoyed this short story, with the townspeople, how they come together and of course the gossip. Narrated by Lorana Hoopes, we get to enjoy not only her many voices and inflections but her beautiful singing voice as well. It's a fantastic listen.
The rules for being a teacher were strict, proper behavior at all times. There social life was just more duties, let alone dating. Opposites attract, and was tested, good story. This was well narrated and portrayed by the audio ARC I got for my voluntary review and my honest opinion
This review is for the audiobook which I received free from the author. I laughed a lot throughout this story. Each chapter starts with a rule from the school board about how a lady teacher is to act. Some of those rules are hilarious. Garnet is the best teacher for this old west town. Very well written. I love Ms. Hoopes' narration also. She has the perfect voice for reading books & doing the inflections. Highly recommend.
Loved this story. Oh so many rules for teachers back in the day. This historical romance was sweet and clean and left you feeling good. Small town, neighbors helping neighbors. I listened to audio version and the narrative on this was excellent!
I received a free copy and this is my honest opinion.
I enjoyed this book because there was only one misunderstanding. They resolved it quickly and moved on. I also appreciated that there were no heroics in the book. Sometimes, I just want to read a book that takes me away with a feel good attitude. Garnet's Gift did that for me. This author has now become a favorite of mine.
**Audiobook Review** I was given a copy of this audio book for an honest review. I truly enjoyed listening to this book. This was my first book by Kimberly Grist. I love historical romances and am a new fan of Kimberly’s. Lorana Hoopes narrated this book and as usual, did a wonderful job. Her singing voice is beautiful. I enjoyed listening to her sing snippets of hymns. 💕 I recommend listening to this book.
Thank you, Kimberly Grist, I really enjoyed this set of Books. Everyone was great to read and different, The children made the books fun and exciting. Garnet and Noah had rough start, but a good ending.
Another Novella in the Carrie Town Series. They all can be read as standalone books. This is a story about Garner Adams who comes to town to be a teacher. She finds that there are many rules to follow that are given at the beginning of each chapter. It reminded me of my aunt's who taught also at this time in history. What a charming story of this teacher , her children, church and the friends she meets. It has a deputy who helps her out quite a bit even with her teaching on stormy day. It has some bible verses, songs and even a wives tale that added some humor to this delightful story. I hope you enjoy this novella as much as I did. I purchased this book when it was on sale. All the words are strictly my own.
I listened to the audiobook of this story. Great narration. This was a fun book. Garnet Adams is only 22, but wants to get married and have a family. She is working as a school teacher to help support her widowed mother and aunt. It's 1890 and a lot of rules to abide by being a female teacher. Like she must be in her room by dark, no dancing and she can't be married. So that leaves her little time for a social life, outside of work and church. Garnet is attracted to Deputy Noah Scott, but finds him rude and insensitive. She doesn't think he would be attracted to a schoolmarm. She makes him a Christmas present anyways, but he looses it. Garnet sees that he threw it away and retrieves it. She is so upset, what will she do now. Cute story, how a misunderstanding could change their future.
Kimberly Grist has done it again. She has given us wonderful characters that we find ourselves loving and cheering for. This is Garnet and Deputy Sheriff Noah's story. Garnet has a lot of responsibility in providing for her mother so she takes a job as a school teacher, and as was the custom in the time of the story, had little social life. Then, things change when Garnet and Noah are drawn together by the needs of some of her students and as they work together to provide for the needs romance develops between the couple. This is a sweet, feel good story with a HEA that I know you will love. I really enjoyed the book and highly recommend it.
Another delightful must-read story from Kimberly Grist. She heads her book chapters with sayings or scriptures. In this book, it was rules for teachers. Based on real rules from the past, I wondered as I read them if I ever could have survived as a teacher. The characters were great. The author included several kids say the darnedest things type quips. My favorite came from the nativity play rehearsal. Must read the book for that one alone. Sweet romance with such a believable heroine and hero, their romance woven in with a great tale of the true message of Christmas.
Garnet is a school teacher who must work to help support her mother and her aunt. Every chapter begins with one of the rules for schoolmarms, which I found fascinating.
Noah is the deputy in town. He isn’t interested in settling down, and especially not with a straight-laced school teacher. But Garnet surprises him because she is very different from what he had expected.
This is a tender romance that gently moves along. There isn’t a lot of tension until about the fourteenth chapter. It’s a sweet story that has a romantic ending readers will enjoy.
I loved reading the rules for teachers. It was great that Noah was patient and that he was active in helping those in need. I liked that Garnet was obedient, but caring. I liked that she helped others. And that she also facilitated charity by other people. I chuckled at the gift misunderstanding. And I love a happily ever after!
Garner wants to get married but she needs to support her mother too. She becomes a schoolteacher. When she meets Noah, the deputy, she isn’t impressed but when they are able to help some of her students they start to appreciate each other. But she still needs to support her mother....... Entertaining story, loved the school rules at the start of the story.
I would recommend this to anyone who likes historical Christian romance. I found that, while there was not an absence of conflict, it was just enough to keep the story from being boring. All in all, it was a sweet, believable story that I thoroughly enjoyed!
This story is a part of Kimberly Grist series of a small place called Carrie Town. I've read two of the books and enjoy this series. Garnett is a teach in town with lots of rules to fo.low. Read for yourself and see if Garnet succeeds .
