Loved this feel-good paranormal-supernatural story. Heavy on technical medical descriptions and mainly written from the father's perspective. His eldest daughter screams at a man that he couldn't see...and that's just the beginning. We're taken on a rollercoaster ride as Michael begins to believe his eldest daughter then realizes the world is populated by good and evil spirits. People, such as some doctors and federal agents turn out to be demon possessed, and even a church isn't safe!
The ending comes too soon with a dramatic confrontation with a fallen angel and a host of evil spirits. Don't worry...there's more to come as this is book one of a series.
Rob Horner has produced a well-written and engaging story. I found myself wanting to know what would happen next and could not put the book down until I had finished it. all in a day. The protagonist, Michael Richards, is married, the father to three very young and precocious daughters, and a full-time emergency room nurse practitioner. He and his wife are confronted with medical events that no parent wants to face with their children. As he searches for answers for a daughter with a medical affliction, he and his family are presented with more mysteries and resulting concerns.
As a reader, you will find yourself rooting for Michael and his family to understand what is happening and find a cure. I do not doubt that you, too, will find it is a difficult book to put down. Enjoy!
Mr. Horner has stated the sequel will be published in April. I can't wait and if its anything like the first book I know to set aside a day to finish it.
This is an oddball as it's something that is outside my normal reading but as a medium I thoroughly enjoyed it and it kept me in suspense as I read on. The characters are relatable and it did help that I'm familiar with dark forces, which made the story that much more enjoyable! Rob has written an enjoyable book. If you're into the paranormal or stories involving them, this is just for you!
I know what it's like to be around the supernatural. This story hits close to home in many ways. Knowing that there are forces out there we can not see or control can be very scary and life changing. Michael tries to do the best for his family even when he is not sure what that is. This story has heart depth and more. It is a wonderful read and I recommend it if you are into the paranormal.
‘Brightness’ explores the age old theme of good v evil in a tale made all the more chilling by having children at the heart of it. The opening takes you straight into Michael Richard’s nightmare scenario, making him question everything he believes about the world around him. He soon discovers there are unseen forces at work and his daughter, Sarah, able to see the evil that exists all too clearly. What will it take to convince him her experiences are purely hallucinations and not something more sinister? In his quest for answers, he’s faced with a series of terrifying events that escalate and become even more frightening when he realises that even the church isn’t a safe haven. Rob Horner gives a vivid account of Michael’s fight to protect his beloved family against supernatural powers he could never have imagined. In terms of medical procedures and diagnostics, the author obviously knows his stuff. I felt the jargon was a tad too prolonged and not necessary, which tended to interrupt the flow in an otherwise tense and gripping story. The writing is good and the well-crafted plot held my attention throughout. I am looking forward to reading more from this author. As an added incentive, at the end of ‘Brightness’ the reader is given a taste of the follow-up story, which promises to be equally compelling.
The story started out very slowly. Sarah is the oldest of three little girls who experiences visions of supernatural beings. Her father believes her to be suffering from a psychotic episode. The author is very detailed with his use of textbook medical deduction of patients who may suffer from hallucinations. The crescendo occurs midway through the book with her medically trained dad realizing his daughter’s visions are concrete. From that point on it was a suspenseful roller coaster ride to the finish. I appreciated the author creating awareness about children with Truncus. I love it when a character takes on a defect that doesn’t define them as less than capable. In this story, the child with Truncus is powerful and intricate in restoring order.
Inspiring words...a really nice read. What a surprise to find the book situated in an area that I am familiar with! I could follow along with his directions ! This is a book about a man & his family . Three little girls who have been raised in the church by their faithful parents. They have no concept of good versus evil. They will soon know the difference. This book was well written. The characters were very relatable, the storyline followed thru out. Nothing pushy, just your own take on religion. Will be glad to follow up with this aurhor. Hope that's soon😊
This is the third book from this author that I have read and it now has passed Night Zero as my favorite of his novels thus far. What a powerful, suspenseful and heart felt story. I teared up several times while reading this book. I think I love the most that it focuses around a family and the lengths the father goes through to find out what is going on exactly with his daughter and what to do about it. This book is about good vs evil, light vs dark. Beautifully written, poetic, and a touching story that also has you on the edge of your seat. READ IT! YOU MUST!
A family chosen by God to fight against Satan's followers: Michael, Nicole, Sarah, Karie and little Sofie. Apart from losing interest as the author got carried away with all the technology stuff - that's just my opinion - I found this a very interesting read. Readers, who like to read stories about "good versus evil", I'm sure you will love this one.
One small girl against the daemon hoard (and a hella good read).
Brightness is an entertaining story. I completed the book over a weekend, resenting all the interruptions of “have to” stuff that got in the way of a straight-through read.
As the story begins, Michael Richards’ young daughter, Sarah, describes people only she can see. Some of them are terrifying. Michael, a nurse practitioner, fears his oldest child is hallucinating.
As the magnitude and frequency of Sarah’s visions increase, Michael follows his scientific instincts and training to investigate. But when Sarah’s younger sisters are drawn into the mystery, the nurse practitioner is forced to reexamine his approach. Both his medical knowledge and spiritual beliefs will be tested to their limits as one crisis after another unfolds. The fate of Michael’s family—and possibly mankind—hangs in the balance.
If you have ever struggled to embrace the stolid Newtonian universe while holding onto the innate knowing that comes from the realm of Spirit, you will love Brightness.
