Marital Bliss #2

Wrangling a Groom

Rate this book
Can two men keep a childhood promise for marital bliss?

Wyatt is overwhelmed after his grandfather dies, leaving him to take over the cattle ranch. The Triple J is floundering, vandals are targeting him, and his first and only love is finally within reach--and still holding a grudge. Wyatt has wanted to marry Diego since they made a childhood pact, but Diego isn't back for their second chance.

When a funeral calls Diego back to Texas, he comes face-to-face with the cowboy who broke his heart. Resentment has burned inside him for years, but his anger wavers as he realizes just how much Wyatt is struggling to keep his head above water. The man he once loved is lonely and burdened, and Diego feels compelled to help him rediscover the strong, capable rancher he knows him to be.

Hostility gives way to passion, then friendship as they fall into a rhythm of work and sex. Wyatt has renewed hope he might wrangle the man he wants to be his groom. But Diego has a life waiting for him one thousand miles away, and love may not be enough to prevent history from repeating itself.

Wrangling a Groom is Book 2 of the Marital Bliss series, but can be read as a standalone.

The second entry in the Marital Bliss series from DJ Jamison is a completely different kettle of fish than the fake boyfriend trope of book one.

This book is a second chance romance with lots of angst, lots of angry sex and a whole heap of stored up resentment, guilt, angst and - eventually - forgiveness.

I liked it a lot, even though it took a long time for Diego to get out of his own head and realise that things weren't as black and white as he'd always thought and that a 19-year-old Wyatt was under so much pressure that perhaps walking away wasn't the best thing to have done.

There's an instant connection between the two older men when they meet after six years and there's some ridiculously hot angry sex in a barn which I think is among the best I've read from DJ - although I wanted to thump Diego for how he treated Wyatt afterwards.

We get a fair bit of back and forth as Wyatt does his best to demonstrate to Diego that a life together on the ranch can be on the cards for the both of them and that he's never stopped loving the other man.

My only criticism of this would be that it perhaps became just a slight bit wearing as Diego took a significantly longer time to wake up to the fact that he wasn't blameless in the situation which had separated the two men when they were still just teenagers.

There's a lovely guest appearance by Caleb and Justin from book one and I liked the extended set of characters we're introduced to on the ranch and I'm intrigued as to see where the series goes next.

The obvious character is Mattias but I have absolutely no clue who is going to be the one to take him in hand as neither of the other two relatively young men we met in this book seems a likely candidate!

If you like angsty, chemistry-filled sex but slow burn romance, this one's the book for you.

A Joyfully Jay review.

2.5 stars

While Wrangling a Groom by D.J. Jamison is the second installment in the Marital Bliss series, it can absolutely be read as a standalone. If you are familiar with the first novel, Surprise Groom, you will recall Caleb and Julian’s story and delight in their brief appearance in this book. However, this story really hinges on a brand new setting—the Triple J Ranch in Texas—and a new character, Wyatt Jones. I don’t recall Diego being mentioned in the first novel, but I am fairly sure he must have been given his connection to Julian and Caleb. It’s these two cowboys that this story centers on and they are in quite a mess when the novel opens.

Despite being childhood friends and later teenage lovers, the incident that blew the men apart was no small thing. Diego is hurt, angry, and obstinate about giving up that anger. Wyatt, on the other hand, comes off as almost desperate to rekindle their relationship and essentially pick up where they left off six years before. I will admit this felt like a very lopsided relationship to me and the sex these two engage in, while steamy, felt all kinds of wrong, particularly since Diego initially made it very clear he was basically using Wyatt for sex. I wish I could tell you that this was one of those second chance romances that featured a hurt/comfort trope and I am hazarding a guess that perhaps this was what the author intended for this story to be. Instead, there seemed to be a lot of misfiring while Diego grappled endlessly, right up to the final chapters, to come to terms with how he really felt about Wyatt.

This series might not be for me. While I enjoyed the first one, I thought it dragged in the middle. This one was the same. Except I kind of didn't enjoy it. I didn't feel the connection between Wyatt and Diego. They were supposed to be best friends since they were little kids, yet I didn't feel it. Diego's inner monologue and his way of behaving towards Wyatt got old really quick.

The prologue was super sweet though. That alone is worth more than two stars.

Downbeat and boring. MCs spend their time ruminating over the same old emotional ground for far too long. Wicked homophobia & financial mismanagement by dead character excused by all concerned because (a) he's dead and (b) everyone called him Grandad.

Reread edit: I like the plot still, previous opinion still stands, but the audiobook didn't hit the spot as well as the ebook did. It could be that I didn't vibe with the narrator. Always a risk when it comes to audiobooks.

...

Bliss indeed! This is such a beautiful story. Diego was definitely one of those characters that feels like he had more of a story to tell, and even though I didn't expect it to be a broken heart with his first love and childhood friend, it fits both his character and what we learned about him in surprise groom. And Wyatt is such a sweetheart! I loved it!

This had the potential to be great. Wyatt was a needy mess, jumping Diego with a proposal at the funeral. Sure there was angry sex that was smokin' 🔥🔥🔥..but hot sexy times doth not a story make.

I haven't read the first book. I may later..

Wrangling the Groom is book 2 in the series and I guess it could be read as a standalone, although Caleb and Julian from the first book feature in this book quite a bit, so for maximum enjoyment you might want to read Surprise Groom first.

Diego is back in Texas for Wyatt's grandfather's funeral for the first time in 6 years after he issued an ultimatum to Wyatt, and asked him to choose between him or the ranch that's been in Wyatt's family for generations. Cornered between a rock and a hard place, Wyatt chooses the ranch and Diego is still holding a grudge over this, even if he never gave Wyatt the chance to explain the reason for his decision. *kicks Diego* Now, that Diego is back, Wyatt wants them to get back together, but of course, it won't be that easy.

I really liked Wyatt, he was sweet, hardworking, he wore his heart on his sleeve and was an all-around good guy. My one problem with him was that he was a pushover for Diego and that made me want to shake some sense into him more than a few times. Diego was another matter altogether. Even after acknowledging to himself that Wyatt wasn't the only one who messed up 6 years before, he kept Wyatt at arm's length and treated him like dirt. IMHO, he really didn't deserve Wyatt's love and frankly, Diego's hot and cold routine got old very fast. Grrr, I can't tell you how many times I needed to stop the audiobook because he made me angry at something he did. Were they hot together? Yes, they were. Unfortunately, my enjoyment of the story and my overall investment in wanting Wyatt and Diego together got marred by the way Diego behaved and how much he didn't deserve Wyatt until almost the end of the book and by then it was too little too late for me. Even the grand gesture fell flat for me.

It was great catching up with Caleb and Julian and I really liked seeing how Wyatt's ranch worked and how his plans to start a destiny wedding business went along. Roberto and Wyatt's family were lovely and a great addition to the story, too.

All in all, this was a good audiobook. Wyatt Baker did a fantastic job bringing the story and the characters to life and the story was pretty good, even if Diego made me angry at almost every scene he was in. LOL Anyway, even if I wasn't truly invested in Wyatt and Diego's HEA, I still have no trouble recommending it. DJ Jamison's writing is great as always and hey, who knows? Perhaps you'll like Diego better than I did. ;)

I loved this book. The prologue was so so cute!!!This is a second chance romance with best friends turned loved. It can be read as a standalone even though it's the second in the series.

Most of the book I felt really bad for Wyatt. Agreeing to be friends with benefits with your ex? Congratulations, you've reached a new height of stupidity! Like, Wyatt, you're already hurting!!

He’d loved Diego so much, for so long, that it seemed impossible.

I loved Diego and Wyatt. Yes, there's was a lot of anger and resentment between them but I'm really glad they work it out. I just wish Diego came to his senses a bit earlier. I was really glad to meet Julien and Caleb from the first book. The epilogue was beautiful and I'm looking forward to new books in the series.

I'm a big fan of the author's books, and this new release works well as a standalone, though if you haven't read Surprise Groom you really should! This one hit me in the feels so hard like only second-chance romance angst can. What also hit me pretty hard were the lovely outdoors love scenes which were pretty smokin' hot. Damn, cowboy. Highly recommended <3

Well, I did like the first book of this “Marital Bliss” series and held high hopes for the second book. I was slightly disappointed, alas. The author sets the plot on a fictitious Texan farm, the Tripe J, the owner of which has just passed away, leaving his grand-son Wyatt Jones as sole heir. It has taken the young man several years to make his granddad accept his being gay. That struggle has cost him, at 19, his all-time childhood buddy, best friend, first lover and hoped-for husband, Diego, son of the ranch foreman, who left the farm for Miami. Now the old man’s dead, Diego comes back for the funeral, and sparks he believed had died come alive again. There are some minor twists and turns before both realize they a) still love each other, b) have never ceased loving each other, and c) might love each other till the end of days if they give their couple a chance.

Yes, it’s another rendition of the scarcely original trope “ex-lovers-become-lovers-again” within a not-very-original cowboy setting. I have to admit that the only story set in the Wild West I ever liked was “Little House on the Prairie”—the books, mind you, not the exceedingly dull TV show. Apart from that, most Wild West- and cowboy-stories (namely Hollywood movies) always bored me to death. Too much dichotomy, too butch, too fake. Too little depth. Now, that’s what I’d reproach this book as well. It remains rather on the surface of things. What Wyatt himself recognizes quickly about himself (and repeats several times in the book), the author tried to do as well: “too much, too fast”. I couldn’t get a feeling for the two guys, I didn’t manage to get involved with them, with their past hurt, their current struggles, their love story. Even if I knew they had promised each other, as kids, they’d marry by 25, even if I knew they had been an inseparable item since then (friends, then lovers), even if I got the background information about how they broke up, their meeting again and going “Boom!” smelled strangely of unexplained insta-love (as a reminder, I’m not fond of all that insta-love going on in gay romance).

It’s hard to put into words what exactly didn’t work for me. The whole atmosphere felt off to me, strained. The setting, the difficulties of the farm, the idea of creating an event venue, all those details did nothing to me. I just couldn’t sense they were genuine. Sometimes, I thought the author didn’t really know how to continue, didn’t know where she wanted to take her MCs (and us, the readers). The storyline tottered on, but didn’t catch my attention, didn’t grip me. Even the steamy scenes had a pasted-on feel after a while. They didn’t make the wheel of the plot turn forwards, if you want; they were just an interruption of it, an interlude (somewhat longish in places). I do love some hot action, don’t get me wrong, but I didn’t care for them in this book, probably because I didn’t care for those involved, i.e. the MCs. Even the writing style was less solid, more strained, more wooden in this book than in #1, “Surprise Groom”. While I didn’t hate this book, I’m sorry to say I didn’t particularly like it either.

But hey, luckily we all have different tastes. This book was not to mine. But for those who like cowboys, boots, Stetsons, checkered button-down shirts, and good feelings, by all means, check it out.

I really enjoyed this book. It has best friends that once was more only to have their relationship torn apart. Not only that but it ruined the friendship and now six years later, they come face to face once more and all that old hurt and anger, well it is still present and may not go away anytime soon, if ever. I love a book that has some drama to it especially were it involves two people that used to be close only to be up not liking the other.

Wyatt is now the owner of Triple J ranch. He grew up on the ranch with his mom and grandfather and now that his grandfather has passed away, the ranch is his. This ranch has brought Wyatt a lot of heartache through the years because of it was not for the ranch then he may still have his best friend and ex boyfriend in his life. But when Wyatt’s grandfather was alive, he caught Wyatt with his once best friend Diego kissing and he gave Wyatt an ultimatum. Either end things or he would not inherit the ranch one day. At the time, Wyatt had thought what would be a temporary separation from Diego until he could make his grandfather understand what they meant to each other, well it turned into so much more. He lost Diego that day not to be heard from again.

Diego left the farm the day he and Wyatt was caught not to come back again. He cut all ties to Wyatt and moved to Miami to start a new life. Though Diego would like to believe that six years later he is over Wyatt, that does not seem to be the case when Diego returns to the ranch when he hears of Wyatt’s grandfather passing.

When Diego returns, he can tell the ranch is not doing as well as it once was. He also realized that he is still very angry with Wyatt for choosing the ranch over him. So when Wyatt starts to immediately stick his foot in his mouth where Diego is concerned, it really brings that anger on the forefront for Diego and he ends up letting that anger out on Wyatt. Diego did not realize that as much as he wants to not like Wyatt, he feels bad for letting his anger rule his emotions where Wyatt was concerned. He also realizes he is not over Wyatt as much as he hoped he was either.

This trip back to the ranch was supposed to be a quick one for the funeral but it turns into so much more. It turns out this trip is an opportunity for Diego to finally put his past to rest so maybe he can finally move on with his life. But Wyatt is determined that Diego is his future. How will things finally end between these two former boyfriends and best friends? Can they find a new common ground? Will they be able to finally lay the hurt and anger from the past to rest?

This was such a great read!! I really enjoyed this book so much!! DJ Jamison definitely wrote a great book where this one is concerned. This book is sot of a spin off of one of the previous books” Bliss Island”. And I love that he brought those characters back in this book!! Great read!!

2.5 stars - I liked this less than the first book in the series. It seemed to me that it tried to tackle some complicated topics without really taking the time to do so. Overall I wasn't that into all the angst, resentment and guilt combined with a lot of tell don't show romance.

Another day, another series by D.J. Jamison. This time around, Martial Bliss, which this series is anything but (at least at first--who needs "traditional" love/marriage when you can fake-dating trope your way into true love and martial bliss). The second book is titled: "Wrangling A Groom".

["Can two men keep a childhood promise for marital bliss?

Idiots, that's all I have to say. Yes, the situation was shit. And the regional/occupational hate is shit. And the how-could-this-possibly-ever-work was confusing as shit. But the connection and the attraction and the utter feeling of home/rightness was so fucking off the charts, who cares about any other shit but the love.

Yeah, if I was in there place, I'd have a lot of reservations and anxieties about everything. But fuuuuuck, that kind of full-fledged...everything. I don't think I'd be able to pass that up for the entire world.

Trigger Warnings (should have probably added some to the first novel's review, by bad): homophobia, regional and occupational hate, internalized-homophobia, targeted-vandalism, bullying, blackmail, ultimatums, etc

Performance 4.5 rounded up
Story 5

A good friends-to-enemies-to-lovers story.

I read Wrangling a Groom when it was first released in October 2019. I liked the story a lot when I read it and I enjoyed listening to the audio performed by Wyatt Baker. He did a good job with another of DJ's audiobooks, All I Want is You, and I also enjoyed his performance of Wrangling a Groom.

Below is a copy of my review from when I read the book:

Second chance stories, along with friends-to-lovers, are among my favorite romance tropes. In Wrangling a Groom, we not only get a second chance story but we also get a good enemies-to-lovers one.

Wyatt and Diego grew up together on Wyatt's family's ranch. His grandfather was the family patriarch and ruled the roost. Diego's father has worked on the ranch for many years and is now foreman.

As teenagers Wyatt and Diego realized that their relationship was more than just friends. Unfortunately, Wyatt's grandfather threatened to disinherit Wyatt, and not leave him the ranch that he was raised to run, if he continued a romantic relationship with Diego. When Wyatt refused to come out, and have an open relationship with Diego, Diego left in anger and broke off all contact with Wyatt.

Six years later Diego returns for the funeral of Wyatt's grandfather. This sets the stage for Wyatt to try and win Diego back. There are some really hot scenes for these two; they just about melted my ereader.

I enjoyed this story a lot. The rebuilding of Wyatt's and Diego's relationship was well crafted and kept me entertained. The ranch is having some financial difficulties and Wyatt has good ideas for other sources of income. We get to revisit Bliss Island from book one in the series, Surprise Groom, but you don't have to have read it to enjoy Wrangling a Groom.

There were some interesting secondary characters that I hope we might read more about in the future. While this book didn't quite make it to 5 (4.5 rounded up) stars for me, DJ Jamison remains firmly seated on my list of favorite MM authors and I look forward to reading her next book.

A complimentary copy of this audiobook was provided to me but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author and/or narrator.

I've always been particularly attached to rancher romances, and I loved the dynamic between Wyatt and Diego in this one. The Diego I met as a bartender gave me no hints about his cowboy past, but it only took minutes for me to make the connection once he traveled back home. As twisted up as Diego and Wyatt's past was, this story felt like a homecoming in the best way. Diego thrived on the ranch, and Wyatt's barely suppressed happiness at having him back was enthralling. It was fascinating for me to watch the two of them reconnect and learn all the ways they still fit together, even if Diego resisted their connection fiercely at first. Every time another snippet of Wyatt and Diego's past heartbreak was revealed, my own heart broke at how it pushed them apart from each other. Their reunion was understandably cautious, but the more time they spent together, the more I felt the stirrings of dormant love flaring back to life. Because I'm so far removed from the life of a cowboy, even the simplest day on the ranch was captivating for me. I had so much fun watching Diego and Wyatt ride horses, complete chores, and reconnect with their younger selves that it made the slow-paced romance more enjoyable as well. The feelings Diego and Wyatt had for each other were much deeper than I originally realized, and it translated to some intensely passionate lovemaking. I was rooting hard for the two of them to end up together, and though they certainly didn't take the easiest path, it was worth it to see that grand proposal at the end and know the most difficult part of their journey was over.

**I voluntarily read an ARC of this book. This review expresses my honest thoughts and opinions.

Some of my absolute favorite tropes, when done correctly, are second chance and childhood friends to lovers. If you throw in some hard core pining and a good grovel, I am one happy reader. This book looks to check those boxes and I have enjoyed several of this author's books in the past. No brainer, right? Well, color me surprised because I was dead wrong.

The writing is fine. Several of the side characters are great. Yhe epilogue kicks off the story in such an adorable way that I couldn't wait to continue to read on. Then, Diego happens.

Whelp, Diego is too much of a big giant NOPE of a jerky man baby and he killed my joy for this romance. He consistently brags about how much sex he has after he bailed on Wyatt when they were 19. 71% into a supposed romance and he is still bragging to Wyatt about all the men he "rode." He acts possessive of Wyatt and then reminds him what they have is temporary and he is only using Wyatt for sex. Diego puts all the blame on Wyatt for their break-up 6 years prior when he is the one who acted irrationally by running away without giving Wyatt a chance. Wyatt seems to be the only one who had any emotional growth and maturity during their 6-year separation while Diego behaves as if he only grew from a 19-year-old selfish coward into a 25-year-old selfish f@#$boy. Wyatt becomes such a doormat by repeatedly apologizing and pining when he absolutely deserves someone who will love him without being a wishy washy spoiled brat. Diego needs to stay in Miami so Wyatt can find someone who actually deserves his sweet heart.

While I didn't like the story, the writing is still well done. Therefore, I am not rating this story as its my issue with the MC and not the book itself.

This is the second book in the Marital Bliss series – a series with overlapping characters and theme of weddings and wedding venues. I read the first book in the series on Kindle and loved it, and was eager to for the next book, especially when I realized it was going to feature Diego.

Diego was first introduced as the caustic bartender that Julian was friends within book one. In “Wrangling a Groom,” we finally get the background on what caused Diego to be so biting and suspicious: six years ago his heart was broken by his best friend and first love, Wyatt. It’s a hurt Diego’s carried with him despite Wyatt’s attempts to reach out and make amends. It’s not until a funeral brings Diego back to Wyatt’s family ranch that any type of reconciliation can happen.

The emotions between Diego and Wyatt are intense and come crashing down like waves against rocks – strong, overwhelming, and undeniable. Six years may have passed, but Diego and Wyatt still love and lust after each other. This passion and the complications that result of Diego and Wyatt trying to come to terms with what it means and how to move forward, makes the book enthralling. I really enjoyed watching how these two men figure out their issues which made the journey to their happy ever after very satisfying. Plus, the sex scenes were hot and delicious.
Wyatt Baker narrates the audiobook and does a fantastic job. The characters were well voiced and were distinct and consistent which made it very easy for me to follow along in the story without having to refer back to the book. Overall, a very well done production.

I wasn't sure how I'd feel about gay ranchers, but this story surprised me, and in a good way. I was fascinated with Wyatt, especially. He was confident, self-assured and comfortable with himself and his sexual orientation even though his upbringing didn't lend itself to that. And yet he was in touch with his feelings and willing to lay them on the line (unlike most rancher characters I've encountered in romance fiction), and let the chips fall where they may. Also interesting was his penchant for rough sex as well as his willingness to be dominated sexually, and yet he could turn right around and give as good as he got (the sex scenes were hot because they were so emotionally charged, especially the first one and the “making love” one).

The history between Wyatt and Diego set the stage for a charged reunion and gave weight and meaning to their angst, but it didn't take long for their sexual chemistry to give a new direction to their relationship. Diego suggests they have a no-strings 'fling' and Wyatt is willing to take what he can get i.e., whatever will keep Diego around so he can hopefully change his mind. The development of their relationship and the change/transformation in Diego, in particular, was extremely well done. Emotions exploded but then there was time and space for reflection, and the characters were mature enough to talk to each other. I wasn't as enamored with the marriage pact as others seem to be; six years old is just too young to give it so much meaning and they wouldn't have known at 6 that they'd become lovers at 16. Still, it gave the HEA that extra emotional punch.

Diego was an idiot

Diego and Wyatt had made a pact, at the age of six, to get married when they were twenty-five. They sealed the pact in blood from a nail. By nineteen they were over and Diego abruptly left for Miami, leaving a heartbroken Wyatt.

Six years later, Diego was back for a funeral. Diego was full of resentment but Wyatt was still in love. Wyatt was going to have to work hard to wrangle his groom.

Wyatt, as Diego noted, wears his heart on his sleeve when it comes to love. Otherwise, he's the stoic rancher who bottles it up inside. Problem is there's only one person he's ever loved. Diego is more reactive. He makes immediate decisions and expects people to accede to his wishes immediately. Wyatt couldn’t offer that when they were nineteen but maybe they'd both changed.

Diego is an idiot because he was unwilling to examine anything from Wyatt's side. Even when he started to see the past differently, he still didn't acknowledge it to Wyatt. Diego's father even called him out on it. Eventually they were doing the friends with benefits things with Diego making it clear he'd soon be going back to Miami. Might have been okay if Wyatt hadn't said he loved Diego. The words weren't reciprocated. At this point, Diego continues with the sex and seems okay with tearing out Wyatt's heart again. Wyatt was willing to take the risk but Diego was pretty callous about Wyatt's feelings.

Of course it worked out. Diego wasn't in Miami very long at all before he realized what an idiot he'd been. In the end, he did everything right and it made both of them happy.

Wonderful second chance at love story! Wyatt and Diego have some crazy chemistry together, and so much pent-up need and hidden longing. Their connection is incredibly strong and I loved how almost epic and meant-to-be their love felt from the first. I also really liked that both men, eventually, took responsibility for their part in their break-up and that hindsight brought them true understanding and, thanks to that, a new chance at love as well. Their strong friendship flourishes again once Diego returns to the ranch, serving as a sound foundation for their new relationship. I also loved their interactions with the secondary characters who make for an amazing supporting cast, especially Diego’s father, Roberto, who has a couple of surprises up his sleeve. Loved what he brought to the story! It’s very much a family-driven story too, and with family comes drama, but also truly sweet moments. Really loved this story, it was hotter and more intense than I’d expected, but in the best way! Recommend!!

Narration: this is the first time I’ve heard Wyatt Baker do such a sweet, romantic story and I really liked what he did with it. I think he does a great job with the voices, timbres and accents he uses for all the characters, though especially those of Wyatt and Diego. His pacing while he reads, or performs rather, is great and he brings just the right amount of emotion and intonation to his narration.

To be honest, cowboy romance it’s not my jam and I picked up this book because I needed to complete a reading challenge and I saw this book in my homepage and I thought, hey, DJ Jamieson hasn’t missed yet, so it’s gonna be a safe choice, right? And what did I know? I was right. At first I wasn’t convinced because see above, but the more I read the more I enjoyed it. Oh this was everything a second chance should be. The angst bled through the pages and it was amazing, they really transmitted their resentment and they will to get back together. Every chapter I was like, mh Wyatt is right! And then two pages later I was like, oh but Diego has a point too, and it was so entertaining to keep up with it! Tho I kept repeating to Diego that he can’t have the barrel full and the drunk wife (husband) too. (And oh. my. god. It was oh so hot. Their chemistry was unmatched).
