Hermes Trismegistus (Ancient Greek: Ἑρμῆς ὁ Τρισμέγιστος, "thrice-greatest Hermes"; Latin: Mercurius ter Maximus) is the purported author of the Hermetic Corpus, a series of sacred texts that are the basis of Hermeticism.
Great introductory book. Short read.. I really like the princIpals and laws and explanation of cosmology etc. I’d absolutely no idea that it was so close to Hinduism philosophy. In fact if you omit the reference to Hermeticism and give it to a person familiar with Hindu philosophy and beliefs then it will be very hard for him to believe that it is not a sect of Hinduism.
It is good book for anyone interested in religion or history of religions.
I'm not in a position to really say much on Hermetic literature, so I won't - but I'm at the very least entitled to an opinion.
Now, I don't know if I'll upset a lot of people - but while the Kybalion is a "fake" (i.e. a modern creation), it's the only takeaway I had from this little collection of writings. It goes very well with my kind of "Tantric"/metaphysic/non-dual stance, and does so beautifully. I might not know too much about Atkinson's history and philosophy, but I have enjoyed everything I've read by him. In particular his other more practical works, is something I would call compulsory reading for anyone "chasing Siddhi", without strictly following any special lineage/tradition. He knew what he was talking about.
The rest is - sadly - in my humble opinion, inferior/infantile abrahamic rubbish. Full of dualistic and unhealthy ideas about a cleaner and better "otherworld"/afterlife, the body and our "Samsaric reality" (etc.) as evil and unclean etc. It belongs to a school of thought that has nothing good to bring anyone, at least not of Western descent - and should at best be forgotten or ignored.
I will come back to this at a later date and read it again. Whilst the concepts of Gnosticism were easy for me to grasp, some of the Hermetic principles were tougher. Perhaps my mind isn't open enough yet.
