World's Most Popular Short Stories

Rate this book
World’s Most Popular Short Stories is a collection of tales that are soothing, yet scintillating, motivational and magical, and a gentle mix of the common and the special.
Handpicked stories by four master craftsmen – Guy de Maupassant, Anton Chekhov, O Henry and Saki – will not only give you a taste of their contemporary societies and cultures, but also take you on an adventure of a lifetime. Their extraordinary stories are a mixture of tragedy and humorous satire, irony and the macabre, in which the stupidities and hypocrisy of conventional society are viciously pilloried.
You will meet the common folks who love to spend evenings in the company of girls, and you will also meet couples from humble origins working hard to repay a debt which was wrongly assumed in the first place. You can run into love seeking you in some stories, and destiny waiting to change the course of lives in others. The heady mix of humour, satire and drama makes these stories an essential cocktail of emotions.

Henri René Albert Guy de Maupassant was a popular 19th-century French writer. He is one of the fathers of the modern short story. A protege of Flaubert, Maupassant's short stories are characterized by their economy of style and their efficient effortless dénouement. He also wrote six short novels. A number of his stories often denote the futility of war and the innocent civilians who get crushed in it - many are set during the Franco-Prussian War of the 1870s.

Just before the lockdown, I have been gifted this wonderful book by one of my friends in the publishing industry. I am considering this as a gift because I have not been subscribed to it. And it turned out to be a wonderful present in these trying times of quarantine. "World's Most Popular Short Stories" by Srishti publishers is a collection of classic short stories that have accompanied me for two days in the quarantine period

The book covers short stories by four classical authors, each of these stories captures different human emotions. From each of these classic authors, 5-7 different stories have been selected and a total of 25 stories have been delivered to readers. The stories are as short as 5 to 20 pages long. Authors have been assigned a proper segment in the book, which starts with their short introduction followed by stories written by them.

My favorite stories are
- From Maupassant The diamond necklace
- From Anton Chekhov the beggar
- From O Henry the last leaf
- From Saki the saint and the goblin a bread and butter miss

Good points about the book
- It captures human nature and its complexity with the simplest of word usage. I think that is why they are considered classics
- The best part about the short stories are you me always keeps you if you don't like it
- The best companion for your travel for vacation for me it was for a quarantine

My only complaint is a simple cover. It could have been better.

I will give 3.5 out of 5 to this book.

World's Most Popular Short Stories brings together some of the stories written by master writers from four countries - Guy de Maupassant (France), Anton Chekhov (Russia), O Henry (America), and Saki (Britain). The stories in this collection are:

MAUPASSANT:
1. The Diamond Necklace
2. Mme. Teller's Establishment
3. Love
4. A Piece of String
5. The Debt
6. Happiness
7. Crash

ANTON CHEKHOV:
8. In the Ravine
9. On the Way
10. The Beggar
11. Champagne: A Wayfarer's Story
12. At Home

O. HENRY:
13. The Fifth Wheel
14. "Girl"
15. At Arms with Morpheus
16. The Lost Blend
17. The Last Leaf
18. The Pendulum

SAKI (H. H. MUNRO):
19. The Open Window
20. The Quest
21. Adrian: A Chapter in Acclimatization
22. The Sex that Doesn't Shop
23. The Saint and the Goblin
24. A Bread and Butter Miss
25. The Guests

I have selected The Diamond Necklace, A Piece of String, Crash, The Beggar, "Girl", and The Last Leaf as my favorites from this collection. Considering the rest of the stories in this collection, these authors have written much better stories; I wonder why the publishers chose these uninteresting ones. I found them unengaging, and they did not satisfy my desire for good short stories.

A nice compilation of short stories that are all classics on their own.. All these stories capture vividly a mix of emotions - bordering on humour, satire, drama and twists that in some cases are inconceivable..
A good collection apt for taking with you while travelling..
