The sequel to the author's most successful novel, "A Sheriff in Nevada," "Downfall" continues the complicated and dramatic career of a Nevada law enforcement officer as she navigates through the numerous challenges of leading her deputies in America's most remote jurisdiction. Nothing comes easy for Maggie Doane: not her employees, not her professional relationships, and especially not her lover, Dallas Davis. The roller coaster of her life brings all sorts of unexpected surprises to the reader when Davis, Nevada comes crashing down around her.

Reviewers said this about "A Sheriff in Nevada":

"...this story has some surprising twists and characters you'll want to keep following."

"A well-paced mystery led by an immensely likable heroine."

"...packed with facts about Nevada and law enforcement. I just hope Hume didn't put everything he had into this novel, because I'm looking for sequels."

"Lots of local color, vivid characters, and friction here, against a backdrop of brothels, casinos, ranches, and a military base that's hiding something."

"JT Hume has us empathizing with his characters. A good story, well-told."

"A good portrayal of really rural Nevada and law enforcement. Hume is really getting his feet under him as an author."

"The writing is crisp and clean, great action scenes and great characters. I don't think we've heard the last of Sheriff Maggie Doane."

"JT Hume creates characters that are real, both strong and vulnerable at the same time. Sheriff Maggie is such a character."

"I loved how the author painted a picture of the stark yet beautiful Nevada desert, capturing the essence of rural Nevada. He brought me to laughter and to tears. Here's hoping for more to come from this author."

It’s a terrific story with twists, laughs, tears and a touch of mystery. Davis, Nevada, was a small village type town with a couple casinos, some shops and the entire government in one building. The Sheriff had the bottom floor and the rest of the building was taken up with County, State and whoever else thought they deserved an office. It was tough times with lack of funds but somehow Sheriff Maggie Doane made it work. I felt sad that it seemed she never had time for herself but then she had dedicated her work and life to others when she took the oath to become Sheriff. I’ll admit, I wanted more because she had three loves in her life and they all were gone. Thanks for a great book that I just didn’t want to end.

Twice is nice!

Great and different follow up to his first Sheriff book. Same descriptive characters but in an entirely different scenario from first book. Enjoyed the story very much.

Visiting family…

After reading the first book, this book is like visiting family. Read both of them your only disappointment will be when you run out of book…

Couldn't put this one down !

I was hooked on the first of this series, now, I have been reeled in ! So many unexpected twists, but so much action. Left me breathless at times, and then sometimes sad. Just can't predict anything with this book. I just love it, and highly recommend it.

Fantastic sequel

I really enjoyed the first visit to Davis and now absolutely love it. This small rural Nevada town is populated by genuine characters, whose flaws and strengths only make them seem all the more real. As the book progressed, I was once again caught up in the story and time flew by until suddenly it was over. I do hope that we’ll see more of Davis and the great people who call Jefferson County home.
