A false engagement. A mysterious coast. Two reluctant hearts.
Much to her father’s dismay, Miss Amelia Buxton aspires to become a spinster, just like her eccentric aunt. Growing up with parents who married for every reason but love, she has never seen a joyful marriage. When Amelia requests a summer trip to the legendary waters of Brighton, her father allows her the excursion, but with one requirement: she must return engaged, or agree to the proposal of the man of his choosing.
Crawling with tourists, Brighton is not the town Adam Claridge once loved. When his sister Eleanor disappears without warning, Adam is desperate to bring her home. In his search, he happens upon Miss Amelia Buxton, a young tourist that proves vital in his search for Eleanor. But Amelia is conducting a search of her own—a search for a husband—and Adam has little choice but to offer a fair trade: he will play the role of Amelia’s betrothed in exchange for her assistance in finding Eleanor.
Convenient at first, Amelia and Adam’s arrangement quickly plummets into disarray. Falling in love had not been part of their bargain.
A Convenient Engagement is a sweet and clean regency romance novel.
BRIDES OF BRIGHTON SERIES: A Convenient Engagement Marrying Miss Milton (November 2018) Romancing Lord Ramsbury (December 2018) An Unexpected Bride (January 2019)
. This is a historical fiction book that provides a clean and wholesome romance. This installment features Ms. Amelia Buxton, who has decided that becoming a spinster, like her eccentric aunt, is preferable to a loveless marriage. Unfortunately, her father is opposed to such a ridiculous idea. A trip to Brighton was supposed to cheer her up and give her aunt hope for healing. However, Amelia's father tricked her into returning engaged within 3 months or she would have to marry an elderly friend of his, who repulses her to no end.
Upon arriving in Brighton, Ameilia is swept up in the mysterious disappearance of a young local girl. Another bargain is struck with the girl's brother. Adam Claridge and she become immersed in a whirlwind of emotional turmoil.
This book is able to stand on its own. Step inside this book and enter this literary fiction journey with twists and turns before arriving at their perfect H.E.A.
The story is built on a good premise, the characters came to life, and the conclusion was all you could hope for in a H.E.A. So based on these observations, I enjoyed the first book of this series and look forward to continuing onward.
I rarely give out 1 star ratings but this book had so many things that were sooo wrong! And I literally hated all the characters in this book.
The so called hero of the book , Adam, persuades the heroine, Amelia,to lie and flirt with a complete stranger in order to get information from him. She lies and flirts so well that the poor man falls in love with her. She then breaks his heart when she reveals her scheme. I truly hated Amelia at this point. Adam also agrees to pretend to be Amelia's fiancé in order to fool her father.
Adam is blindly searching for his missing sister. He's a rude, horrible person. His father tells him about his sister wanting to marry a man the father did not approve of. Does he have enough sense to realize she has run off? Nope!! He continues to use the heroine for his own purposes.
Their father is on his deathbed when the sister, Eleanor runs off to be with the man she loves. She didn't think enough of her father to wait until after his death to leave. The father didn't seam overly concerned about Eleanor either. She writes them once and they never see her again.
There were also so many plot holes and elements weren't correct for this historical era. The ending was rushed and felt thrown together. Adam literally doesn't talk to Amelia for 2 months but shows up at the end of the book to kiss her. On the front porch in front of her home!
Amelia is desperate for an engagement and Adam is madly looking for his lost sister and it seems that fate has brought them together in Brighton, as they each have something to offer the other.
This charmingly delightful tale delivers witty banter and a cozy mystery. A steady pace is set from page one and the characters come to life in a fun way. I love how Amelia can be herself and her aunt is hilarious. They have a good rapport with each other and quickly draw Adam into their lines of fire. He is one determined young man, who is tired of the games of society, and is persistent, creative, and relentless in the search for his dear sister. I enjoyed wondering at the outcome throughout the pages and was definitely entertained.
A Convenient Engagement is a great start to this new series that looks to be promising.
Content: mild romance

When I chose this book from KU, I wasn't sure what to expect as I thought it was going to be a short read as other marriage of conveniences go, however I was totally surprised how interested I became with the storyline and characters in the book.
To start, I've never read any books by Ashtyn Newbold, so this is an author new to me. As I mentioned earlier in the year, I was going to try out some new authors whether hit or miss. "A Convenient Engagement (Brides of Brighton #1" is a clean and wholesome historical romance that introduces Amelia Buxton who is determined to never marry and become a spinster just like her aunt. She had seen first hand what a loveless marriage could be watching her mother and father and that was her deciding factor. After her mother's death, her father became cold and only wanted his daughter to marry by arranging the proceedings for her. Not wanting to marry the men her father have chosen, she makes a deal with him that if she can become engaged in Brighton within three months time, he will drop the idea of her marrying someone twice her age and a friend of her father.
Brighton brings a change for Ameilia and at one point she gets involved with helping to find a young girl who is thought to have disappeared. After hearing this information she makes a deal with Adam Claridge, the brother of the girl that is thought to be missing. Unfortunately, what started out as a farce, she gets caught her in emotions she had never thought she had and ends of being swept away by Adam and her attraction towards him.
Although there are a host of characters that really brings this book together and makes it a worthwhile read, I really enjoyed it very much. It was short, clean, had its share of mystery and twists that all leads a very perfect happily every after. An enjoyable first book in this series and looking forward to the others.
I absolutely loved and adored this beautiful story. The ending was just perfect. I loved the playful banters, the difficult moments and the times that brought the characters together. I may fall asleep with a smile on my face tonight.
The book begins as Amelia makes a bargain with her father to become engaged while in Brighton, or to come home and marry the man he has chosen for her. Amelia has no desire to marry, but makes the bargain so her Aunt Margaret could be dipped into the waters and receive a cure for her bad leg.
From page one this book captured my interest. Amelia is smart and capable. She also loves her Aunt deeply. She shows resilience, conscience, and resourcefulness as she embarks on a quest to help Adam, a man she met on the beach, who will help her by entering into a false engagement to appease her father's demands. She in turn will help him find his missing sister.
There are many moments that are quite funny. Amelia and Adam have great conversations. I loved the banter between the two of them. When you add an eccentric Aunt, it gets better. The characters came to life for me and I loved reading what happens next to them.
I am excited that this will be a series and that I can get to know characters that appeared in this story when they have their own book. I can't wait to read them.

A CONVENIENT ENGAGEMENT is a fun story about a man who needs help in searching for his missing sister and a woman who needs someone to fill in as her fiancé so that she won't be forced to marry a man twice her age of her father's choosing. What then occurs is a crazy story of awkward moments, subterfuge, and courting. Not necessarily in that order. It's an overall sweet, humorous tale set in Brighton where the waters are said to have magical healing powers.
My favorite character was definitely Adam. He felt consistent and genuine, with a good sense of humor, and a strong intellect. He was also charming and handsome, at least according to Amelia and her aunt who couldn't help but notice. Amelia's aunt is a little outlandish, but she also adds a certain charm to the story in her eccentric way. Amelia was a little hot and cold to me. She is at once intelligent and foolish, proper and exceedingly not, believes herself honest while also manipulating and lying. She's thrown in these circumstances that make is difficult, so I got parts of that. She just is also very hot and cold towards Adam, so it took me time to warm up to her. The ending was super sweet and probably my favorite part of the story.
I did have some issues with some of the things that happened or liberties taken. I wondered where the magistrate and officials were that should have been involved in Adam's sister's disappearance. I also wondered how Adam's sister's friends could not know if Amelia was a friend or not or how Adam and another character could live in the same town their whole lives and not know each other. Some of the actions and dialogue of the characters felt out of place - some things that would have caused quite a scandal. Some of the things felt rushed. I like my stories to move logically to an extent and there were several places I had to basically suspend belief in order to believe the plot.
In the end, was it what I wished for? I enjoyed reading this. It's a light historical romance that is very entertaining in parts and an ending the ties it all up beautifully.

A Convenient Engagement is a lovely story with wonderful characters. Brighton itself was a character. The author painted a lovely picture of the setting. I enjoyed the banter between Amelia and Adam. They meet, while Adam was searching for his sister, and later strike up an agreement to help each other. Adam needs to find his sister, Amelia needs an engagement to please her father. What they find is a wonderful journey in finding themselves. Amelia, especially. This book is full of fun and sweet moments. There are hints of mystery and of course, the romance. I loved the tension between Amelia and Adam. There were many enjoyable characters in this book. Aunt Margaret was a joy. She had many wonderful one liners and I loved every page she was on.
Entertaining and humorous! I loved the aunt and thought she added so much to the story. I also enjoyed the historical details about dipping in the waters of Brighton.
This is a pretty short book, and it reads more like a novella. It has a promising premise, but fell a little short in the telling of it.
I wished that the fake engagement part of the story, especially since it's in the title, was more prominent. It really took a third-row seat to everything else, and I was expecting more from that.
I didn't care for how Aunt Margaret was written. She's a jolly woman of plump proportions who is also intellectually challenged. At first I thought maybe she was mentally disabled. Then I got disgusted because it was so poorly portrayed if that was the case. I came to the conclusion that she is not disabled.
*Borrowed from Kindle Unlimited* This was a fun trip to Brighton. I laughed with Aunt Margaret as she tricked Amelia into being dipped. I also laughed out loud when Amelia sought revenge on her Aunt's behalf. I thought the "convenient engagement" between Adam and Amelia turned out for the best. There is a bit of sadness that mars the three month stay but it does end well.
In her novel A Convenient Engagement, author Ashtyn Newbold has written a charming, light, sweet, and fun historical romance, with a bit of mystery. This story comes to life from page one and readers will immediately fall in love with the characters. Newbold has created a light and easy story that readers will easily be able to sit down and read. It has the perfect combination of romance and mystery to keep readers hooked. Readers of Newbold’s previous novels, as well as those that enjoy historical romance will not want to miss out on this delightful read!

A review copy of this book was provided by the author. A review was not required and all views and opinions expressed are my own.
It had a lot of potential to be cute and even had its moments. But there were a lot of details missing from this book that ultimately left it wanting. We never see or even learn about the missing sister so it’s hard to really care about their search for her. The relationship between Amelia and Adam is rushed and feels forced. It was hard to believe that Amelia didn’t believe in love when we never really saw the things that led her to that belief other than the occasional mention of her parents’ relationship. I really liked the details about the bathing machines but the lack of other details specific to the time period left me wondering why this was even set in the Regency era.
Amelia is from Nottingham. Her father is overbearing while her aunt is free. In order to go to Brighton, Amelia makes a deal with her father. She will return engaged or she will marry the man her father picked.
Amelia goes to Brighton with her Aunt Margeret and a maid named Fanny. They have a run-in with Adam on the beach. A man whose sister is missing and his father is ill. Quickly Amelia agrees to help Adam in finding his sister, while Adam agrees to be Amelia’s fake fiance.
What is one thing I love about historical romances? The flirting. I enjoyed Amelia’s sarcastic insults as well. We have lost such good language when it comes to insults and flirting nowadays. Plus what happened to the courtship? Dating is overrated. If I wasn’t married, I’d make a man court me. Also, I wouldn’t mind dressing in regency clothes.
I did find in the author’s note that she was inspired by the real-life dipper Martha Gunn. I did not know that Brighton at one point in history was known for a cure in its waters. I loved finding out about that. I do plan on moving forward with this series. I have a few more books to read but I will love to return for a visit to the Brighton waters in the near future.
Major spoliers below and thoughts from a very unhappy reader! This will be all over the place, like a sputtering volcano. Consider yourself warned!
Seriously, did those who read this story have hearts of stones. Well actually harder than stones as even stones can break for water to gush through.
I read a few reviews before picking this up and it was related as being sweet and cute by many. So I went ahead with it.
I don't have much nice to say about this novel and I do not feel like sugar-coating my thoughts at this moment in time. Not after this one ripped my heart in two.
One star is all it gets. That's it.
Warning, this novel has sadness, angst and betrayal. Also an extremely, stubborn, foolish, stupid, daft, irritating, heroine (Amelia) especially towards the end.
Amelia's aunt, Margaret was lovely and funny. Adam and his father were sensitive, caring characters and I Ioved them. Especially the father, he was so cute. The bond between the two was so sweet.
There were a few laughs but the whole novel permeated with sadness.
At the very end of the novel, I hated it and wished that it had come with a sadness/heartbreaking warning and that I never picked it up.
The author has a very lovely writing style, that I at least appreciated. I have two more novels in this series on my kindle but will not read them.
I'm not reading anything from this Author ever again.
A Convenient Engagement by Ashtyn Newbold England, 1813 Characters Amelia Buxton: Young, single, avoiding an arranged marriage Margaret Buxton : Amelia’s spinster aunt, leg condition Adam Claridge: Single man –sister missing Lord Ramsbury: Wanting to court Amelia
Ms. Newbold is a new to me author I was interested in reading. I found much of this book refreshing. Good storyline, and the history of the “healing waters” of Brighton was a fun read. The author’s notes at the end lets us know one character called “a dipper”, a very large woman who dunked women into the water a prescribed amount of times for healing purposes, was an actual person who lifted people in and out of the water until she was in her eighties.
Somewhat Christian fiction, however there were actions the characters took that weren’t in my estimation very Christian-like. A humiliating incident was met with a humiliating revenge, and two individuals deceived others to gain information or get around an agreement made to another.
The story was very good otherwise and a quick read. 3.5 stars
This was a very fun book to read. Not only did it have humor, great banter between many of the characters, romance, but also a mystery of a missing young lady. The story hops along at a great pace and keeps you wondering about the outcome of whether the main character Amelia will find a prospective husband in time and whether Adam can find his missing sister. The interaction between Amelia and Adam is fiery from the start. I really liked how as the story went along, the two main characters are drawn together in an unseen partnership that soon develops into something more. This romance is clean, witty, and just enough angst to keep you reading until late into the night. This is a great start to a new series and I'm excited to read more.
I got this book recommendation from PeaceLoveBooksxo on Youtube. I enjoyed very much this regency romance about the romantic trope, a marriage of convenience. In this case, it is an engagement of convenience because neither party wants to marry the other. Adam's sister has disappeared without a trace. He thinks people know where she is but they are not saying. He enlist Amelia Buxon to infiltrate society gossip circles and find out what happen to his sister. In return she needs an engagement before the end of the season or her father will marry her off to some old dude with a cane. They just need each other but neither one knows that love is in their future. I am glad to have read this clean romantic novel set in Brighton, England and I am looking forward to reading the other ones in the series.
A sweet and lovely historical romance. While the plot points at the beginning felt somewhat contrived, the charming love story that followed more than made up for it. I especially enjoyed the kind hero and fairly relatable heroine. Her fear of married due to witnessing the effect of her parents' unhappy one was very believable. I recommend this book when you're looking for something cute and simple to read.
There were some endearing moments in this books, as well as some funny moments that left me smiling ear to ear. Overall it was a great story. I think this was a good way to get into Ashtyn's reading. I did feel like the story with Adam's sister could have been fleshed out a bit more with how it started out, but I appreciated the theme of fighting for love I got out of it.
I did like this story, but I didn't connect with it as I had hoped. I believe part of that is the narrator of the audiobook, in my humble opinion. I will definitely read more of Ashtyn's books.
3.5 stars - This was a charming story filled with witty banter and a hint of mystery. It took a while to get into but I did enjoy the the overall plot and characters. Amelia was an honest and outspoken heroine. Her aunt was hilarious and I loved their bond. Adam was also a sweet character and I liked seeing his interactions with Amelia.
I really liked this one! I feel as though I was drawn into the plot instantly. The characters were quite likeable, and the mystery aspect was a nice touch. Definitely worth my time to read!
