Continue Paige's thrilling adventure in book 2 of the Variant Series!
After helping the VLA capture Mantis, Paige once more finds herself on the outside. It’s frustrating. It’s unfair. But there’s nothing she can do, not if she wants to earn their trust.
Soon, however, her patience is rewarded, when a young VLA operative called Blair arrives at her door out of the blue. They need her help, and she’s the only one who can give it. For Paige, it’s a way in. And before long, she finds herself right at the heart of the cause, side by side with Ford.
With dangerous missions into the Bends, and even Northbank, and a host of new charismatic characters to meet, Paige’s life takes several more unexpected twists and turns. But just when she thinks things are going well, tragedy strikes.
Now, it’ll be up to her to try to pick up the pieces. Or watch as the VLA falls apart around her...
Initiate is the second book in the Variant series. It's set in a future where the earth as we knew it has collapsed, of the cities left all were trying to contain knowledge about the other cities in the hope to get compliance and loyalty among their citizens. This story is set in what used to be great Britain, in a city ruled by "the controller". In this city lives Paige, a variant, one of the "world killers", a race of genetically modified humans that were responsible for the weapon that destroyed earth, Paige is trying to hide in and avoid being hunted and killed, just trying to make a change and stay alive.
I have the box set of this series but wanted to review part two while it's fresh in my mind.
The story continues through the eyes of seventeen-year-old Paige, who is now in deeper with the VLA. Her genius is recognised but the fight for the survival of her kind is becoming desperate.
Fast-paced with a great writing style (just a few grammatical errors), this story has action, tension, thoughts, feelings and an intriguing plot alongside good characters.
There are disturbing issues and it will be interesting to see where they lead.
I have never read a published book that had so many spelling mistakes. I read the first book in the series and thought it was OK, the spelling mistakes bothered me but I decided to give the second book in the series a try. I was even more annoyed! I will not be reading the rest of the series.
I enjoyed the second book more than the first. I guess now joining the VLA there were a lot more characters, so Paige became a bit more toned down. I like Ford and Becca and love the newer characters. This book has more of an urgency now that Mantis had indicated there is a weapon that will kill variants. I look forward to reading the next book.
I’ve got to say I’m loving Paige. She knows her strengths and weaknesses but won’t back down for something she wants.
This book explores the VLA further than what we were shown in the first book, so many interesting characters introduced such as Blair and Scissors. I hope to see more on them both in the next few books.
The raid at the end of the book was a magnificent bit of writing, but a bit disheartening for some of the characters who are either dead or captured. I can’t wait to read the next one, so I’m off to do that now.
Edge as always an amazing book and series, you definitely help me escape into the Enhanced world. You never disappoint.
Book one introduced us to Paige a Variant hiding in plain slight and wishing she could join the resistance to fight for her freedom and her people. Ford is part of the resistance and who she wants to emulate and a random event brings them both together at last. Their relationship is slow and steady and the author has a way of capturing your interest and never letting go. Having read other series from this author the Variant universe is diverse and engaging whose main characters have special abilities. This book is action packed and offers a different world full of amazing creatures good and evil. Step into the Variant universe and you will never want to leave.
This book is part two of the Variant series which is a small part of The Enhanced Universe that the author has created. I wasn’t overly drawn into book one of this series which was hard for me because I’m a HUGE fan of this author, especially The Enhanced Universe, but this book has finally pulled me in! It had much better character development and the storyline moved along really well. I’m excited for the next book and can’t wait to see what happens with Ford’s father!
Although not necessary for following this series, I highly recommend reading the other series of The Enhanced Universe. It’s a great backstory for the protagonist of this series.
Another great book! Lots more action now that Paige is taken in by the VLA. She meets a lot more Variants and here are lots of cool powers in the mix. I look forward to the series getting more action to move along faster, and for there to be more emotions involved and character development. Excited to read the next book!
As exciting as the previous book was, things really ramped up for Paige in this one! Her life changes completely, she is dedicated to the cause, and is willing to make the sacrifices necessary to see it through. Hopefully she won’t be giving up too much.
