Christians often have the head knowledge that we are beloved, but deep in our hearts do we truly believe it? When we encounter Jesus in scripture, we tend to hear Jesus’ words with judgment, thinking we cannot be beloved because we will never measure up to God’s standards. Author Kristen Vincent takes us on a journey alongside Jesus that helps break this false understanding and allows us to discover how deeply beloved we are.
This 6-week Lenten journey follows stories of Jesus’ experience of God’s love. The incarnate Son of God was made fully human, which means that Jesus had to fully mature in strength and wisdom to learn that he was beloved. Just as Jesus learned of his belovedness, we, too, can cultivate the wisdom and knowledge that we are deeply loved.
Each week begins with a scripture passage, a weekly devotion, reflection questions, an optional prayer bead experience, and a listening meditation. A Leader’s Guide for small-group study is also included.
I was initially disappointed this included prayers for only Sundays. I pray with beads almost daily and was looking for a book to use through Lent. It worked out though because it turned out another book I ordered (I could decide initially) only had prayers for Monday to Saturday each week. The prayers, and commentary in this book were longer than the other, more in depth. I came to appreciate that, especially with social distancing going on. The books made a nice compliment to each other.
This book introduced me to a new way of praying I hadn’t experienced before. Working through each week of lent and praying daily allowed me to listen to God’s voice as I prayed. The questions for each week were thought-provoking and at times I wrestled with my actual feelings about my faith v the view of God that upbringing and life experience have molded.
Wonderful Lenten experience culminating in this joyous Easter morning!
Really enjoyed this devotional during Lent! I made my own prayer beads, and the exercise of daily stillness in prayer was meaningful especially during the Covid 19 quarantine. I’m going to continue to the daily prayer ritual.
