One of my sons (9 years old at the time of reading) is very interested in Vikings, so I got him yet another book on the topic. I previously had a very good experience with Dinobibi Publishing, having read Civil Rights Movement: History for kids: America's Civil Rights Years, 1954-1965 with my other son. So, since they seem to offer great history books for kids, I thought the same positive experience would repeat itself. Well...

I quite don't know what to make of this. On the one hand, it's really in depth when it comes to Viking mythology (gosh! There are whole chapters on their Creation myths and the Ragnarok!). This was a blast, and my boy absolutely loved that part! Their religious tales read like stories, and, although really in depth, it's very engaging to curious young minds. I have came across many history books for children on the Viking topic; none so far can even compare to this one when it comes to detailing their beliefs! On the other hand...

When it comes to history, I personally thought it was irrelevant, and, rather poor. Irrelevant because, what is being well detailed here are in fact the dynastic battles in Scandinavia. It's not a bad thing, but since I am French and my boy was born and is growing up in England, I would have expected a focus on Normandy, the Danelaw, and, overall, the raids in Western Europe. Historically, then, this book didn't address my background nor my son's. It's also poor, since even major figures like Erik the Red are relegated to a few lines in the end!

There is another issue, this one more serious. Towards the end, the editing is suffering. I don't know why (for overall the quality is impeccable) but punctuation and grammar are off in a few ending pages; being even responsible for an historical inaccuracy. Indeed, at one point it states:

'The king of West Francia, a man called Charlemagne, who was the son of Charles II the Bald...'

This is wrong -the names are mistakenly inverted. It's Charles II the Bald who was the son of Charlemagne, and, so, it was Charles II the Bald who had to deal against Ragnar Lothbrok raiding Paris in 845 -not Charlemagne (who died in 814).

All in all, I would stay clear of it when it comes to its historical value; unless, of course, your focus is on Scandinavian history only. But, if you are looking for a well detailed, in depth read about Viking mythology, then go for it. A I said, I have never came across such a thorough yet accessible expose of their religion in a book targeted to kids before. Up to you!
