The things you have to work for are the most precious.

King is not your typical sweet omega merman. He’s infamous for his explosive temper and his ability to let it ruin his life – which is why he’s in Vale Valley, jobless, homeless, and staying with his cousin and her husband, the sheriff of Vale Valley. He isn’t planning on tanking a job helping the new single dad in town remodel a house, and he really isn’t counting on the alpha being the one person he’s been waiting his whole life for.

When baby Anya came into his life, Jonah sold everything he owned in order to move to Vale Valley and open a daycare so he can build a life for the two of them. Anya and a run-down house on the lake are all he has, and wants, in this world. That is, until he meets a prickly omega with more than his fair share of baggage and kisses that melt Jonah’s brain every damn time.

But both men are hiding secrets that could destroy the fragile trust they’ve been building, and King’s determined not to let fate tell him who his mate should be. Even if Jonah is everything King’s ever wanted.

Fixer-Upper is the 15th book in season three of the popular Vale Valley series, where summer romance is in the air all year round, families are well-meaning even when you want them to go away, and surprise babies can be just what’s needed to help a couple of lonely souls build a home together.

First, the multiple disclaimers:
1)I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review. This does not affect my rating.
2)I am internet-friends with the author. This also does not affect my rating, except in the causal sense that I would probably not have heard of the book otherwise.
3)This is book 15 in a series I haven’t read the rest of. It seemed to work fine as a stand-alone.
4)If you know me, you know I have an aversion to pregnancy and babies (as a fictional trope; actual babies are okay as long as I’m only asked to view them). I’m also not a fan of small towns, destined One True Loves, interfering families, or basically any other of the tropes in this novel. I am reviewing this from the point of view of someone who would chose a story with those elements. And I’ll finish disclaiming by adding up front I did actually enjoy the book despite that content. This is probably a good lesson for me in trying to read more open-mindedly.

Jonah has just moved to Vale Valley with his baby daughter. He’s close to broke after buying a house to convert into a daycare. (He has experience in this field and the town appears to be a crazy baby-making hot zone, so this decision isn’t as random as it sounds.)

King is also new to town, staying with his cousin (a seer whom I suspect is the main character of one of the earlier stories). He is an omega merman, which apparently (I am unfamiliar with this subgenre) means that he can get pregnant and is expected to be submissive and sweet. He isn’t. He is strong-willed and short-tempered and somewhat gun-shy after a couple of bad experiences with asshole alpha boyfriends.

Neither man is looking for romance right now. Jonah wants to focus on his daughter and building a new life with her; King is leery of relationships and annoyed with how his family keeps trying to match-make. Also, they are both keeping secrets that they weren’t planning to reveal any time soon. However, they are attracted to one another immediately and soon realize that they are meant to be together.

This is a “fated mates” romance, which means that some sort of magic or Destiny chooses two people to be together, and they feel some sort of compulsion toward each other. Usually I dislike this trop because the lovers seem to be forced together by uncontrollable passion rather actually liking each other. Like King, I find this violation of free will unappealing and not romantic. But in this case, although it is strong force, it is not all-consuming and the two are able to set their own pace and get to know each other. Also, they seem to have complementary personalities and I could buy them together without the fate aspect.

In a lot of shapeshifter stories being alpha seems to be simply the strongest, shoutiest asshole in the group. Jonah instead manifests a far more positive model of masculinity which is characterized by patience and the desire to support those he cares about (emotionally support, not just beating up threats). The ways in which Silver rewrites varies romantic tropes was one of my favorite things about this book.

I won’t get into the supernatural aspects too much here, but there are various mythical beings and deities involved as well. This definitely more a romance focused on the protagonists’ relationship, though, rather than a fantasy. The character development is solid and Silver’s writing is lively and humorous. It was a lot of fun and I’m glad I read it. (For those who share my squeamishness: there are no descriptions of childbirth or any of the other gross stuff that happens in real-life pregnancy.)

This was book 15 in the "Vale Valley Season 3" . This was my first time reading this author. This was a good read King is not your typical sweet omega merman. He’s infamous for his explosive temper and his ability to let it ruin his life – which is why he’s in Vale Valley, jobless, homeless, and staying with his cousin and her husband, the sheriff of Vale Valley. He isn’t planning on taking a job helping the new single dad in town remodel a house that he plans to use as a daycare and he really isn’t counting on the alpha being the one person he’s been waiting his whole life for. Johan who is an alpha came to Vale with his daughter after he sold everything he had. Each one of them have secrets each one has been hurt by past lover's. King who is a merman and a demigod his family is also crazy with a mix of all kinds of paranormals one of his cousins is Scott who we met in book 11 is a vampire and Katarina who is a seer is married to the sheriff of Vale and Rosemary's son. Johan who lied about is relationship with his daughter Anya. King wants someone to love for him not because of fate. This book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

EE Silver's Fixer-Upper is everything I usually avoid in a book; shifters and multiple types of shifters to be exact. But damn, it's really good. And I certainly am in love with the cover!

King and Jonah are an interesting pair who meet in Vale Valley. Both men have their share of secrets, but they can't resist one another. King's an omega merman with a large family history, and Jonah's an alpha who's raising baby Anya by himself.

As Jonah is working to open a daycare, King is around to help him. The men face their share of family issues, in addition to recovering from bad relationships in the past. The two are definitely great together, as well as hot, with some steamy scenes. Their tale is full of secrets and lies, which cause some decent angst throughout.

One of the great surprised is that King and Jonah don't stick to their usual stereotypes. I really enjoyed this surprise. As well, these two truly want to be together based on their time together, not just because of their fate.

My first EE Silver read, I was impressed with the writing. The pace is good, with a great flow. The characters are well developed, and the storyline is definitely entertaining.

Overall, Fixer-Upper is a super cute book. I don't seek out books like this, but I really enjoyed it. It really focuses on the couple and their growing relationship, rather than the fantasy side of their worlds, which is a plus to me. Now I'm excited for the winter novella staring King and Jonah.

A good start

King has loads of baggage. Jonah has his own secrets. It's a good start. Jonah really seems perfect for King at first. He's kind of an omega-ish alpha. But then it turns out King is super rich, ultra powerful and about 50 years older. What does Jonah bring to that relationship?

I got a little over halfway through the book, and quit in disgust when Jonah still hadn't told King about his daughter. Lying was fine before they started dating. He could easily have brought it up when King made his revelations. He should've at least brought it up before they mated. There is really no excuse for him not to, and it seems out of character. It's a lazy way to create conflict late in the story, and unnecessary when Kong's relatives of Jonah's dad's could provide plenty.

King and Jonah are both new in town, both disappointed by previous relationships and not looking for new love. And they're both keeping secrets. Will they have the courage and patience to let love overcome these obstacles?

Well, obviously the answer is yes -- it wouldn't be a romance if they didn't! But unlike many "fated mates" stories this is strongly character driven, and it feels like the two are genuinely choosing one another rather than being forced together by magic.

Sweet and sexy.

[Note: I have not read the rest of the series, but this stands along just fine.]

Fixer-Upper by E E Silver is part of the third season releases of the multi-author series, Vale Valley. This is an adorable, sweet, fun, sexy and magical story. King and Jonah are amazing characters and I fell in love with them and Anya. I found the whole "secret" of King very interesting and want more of this world. Loved this a lot!

I received an advanced reader's copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review and recommendation.

Ugh. I hate giving low stars to decent books, but I'm just too unhappy this one to be more generous. The writing was fine, storytelling fine, the author is above decent on both those factors IMHO, but I Just. Hated. King.

Not at first.
I get it. I'm down with his personality and past and I actually enjoyed all of it until - here comes the spoiler - he got pissed and didn't forgive Jonah, and THEN *did* forgive him but begrudgingly and never admitting he had been an asshole, too. (And I say "too" very loosely. Jonah wasn't an asshole, and I don't count withholding Anya's true parentage from King, or anyone else, as literally ANYTHING BUT HIS OWN PERSONAL CHOICE WITH HIS OWN PERSONAL INFORMATION.)

Like, I'm sorry. Yes, you can have a history of trust issues and thus have an extreme reaction to, let's face it, a lie that DOES NOT ACTUALLY HURT OR EVEN AFFECT YOU IN ANY MATERIAL WAY, but King's 90 fucking years old and can't give some grace to the man he's supposedly in forever-love with? Grow the fuck up. That ending literally spoiled any and all good romance-feelz in this one for me.

Also, minor quibble that probably would have kept it at a 3-3.5 star anyway: the way they both talked about Anya on multiple occasions as, and I'm paraphrasing because I don't have any desire to flip back through and find the exact instances, but every reference to her as Jonah's adopted daughter, by any character, including her own father, came with references to her therefore not being his "real" daughter. Fuck that. That's not how either parenthood or adoption works.

Annnnyway. Yeah. This is a new-to-me author and most likely now a no-go author. I'll be honest that it wasn't a bad book, but it's just not at all what I personally want from romance, so I wish the author well, but I'll probably steer clear of their books now that this one has gone down so sourly for me.

Jonah & King

I did not know where this book was taking me but I thoroughly enjoyed the heck out of it! It was something new to me with the whole gods of the ocean thing but very welcoming.

Character breakdown;

Jonah: I liked Jonah very much but I will say that lying about his daughter being his was a hell of a weak reason to do so. It was messed up to do, especially since it seemed he was planning on lying to Anya too? Idk but other than that I thought he a solid Mc.

King: now King was a character on his own, big persona sassy feels like crazy. But his family stole the show! Can we go back to the vampire god cousin?!!? Also loved that he was able to adapt to the new life he as creating with Jonah and Anya.

Better than expected, loved the author’s writing style and the side characters stole a lot of the show lol. Anyways 8.5/10 ⭐️ I absolutely do recommend!

Fun MM paranormal alpha/omega mpreg Vale valley romance. Both have secrets which threaten the possible relationship. The character types are new to this series.
It follows the standard romance arc: .
Typos: Character name misspelled or confused (Kind for King, "Jonah asked" when it was King who asked), wrong verb tense, missing periods, a garbled phrase, missing letters (e.g., "is room" for his), missing word, uncapitalized sentence start.

I liked the plot of this book. It could use just a bit more polish as that the whole book did not flow well at times. There were times when I could not tell which character was speaking and there were several typos. But after all that it was a good story. King is an omega merman that came to his cousin’s city to get get away. Jonah, an alpha, moved there with his adopted daughter to set up a daycare. King does not care for alphas at all, and Jonah puts his daughter first. The resolution is interesting.

King and Jonah

King and Jonah make a great team, proving fate was correct in their choice of mate, but secrets, a troubled past, and meddling family make for some twists they must navigate before reaching their HEA.
This story was well told but it needs some proofreading and the epilogue was good but could have been better.

Do only read if you have already read the book. It's more a question I asked myself than a review...

One thing that was a little frustrating... I don't understand why he called himself demigod. He is the son of two gods. That's a god. If he would have been the son of a god and a mortal being it would be demigod...

Fixer-Upper  introduces you to Jonah and King.

Jonah,a human alpha, single father to baby Anya. Firm believer in long-lasting love, the kind of love you work for every day and that could move mountains.

And King, who, since birth, has been promised a sole mate,an eternal love. But he's grown out of the illusion of 'the great love',and he is now a cynical, opinionated, snappy omega.

Oh! Did I mention that King is a merman? How cool is that? And he's got an even cooler secret he hasn't revealed in decades!

I've got to say, when these two meet,it's magical. Both with defenses high up,both with secrets they're afraid to tell. But the zing under their skin every time they touch, the growing need for each other, the trust they start to built...it's a pull neither can fight for too long. And when they give in,talk about fireworks!

Fixer-Upper by EE Silver is an amazing fated mates romance. The writing style is so entertaining and light, that the  story gripped me from the first pages and I fell in love with Jonah and King.  I had a lot of fun watching their relationship develop, each tentative step towards the other at a time.

This is my first book by this author and I've just become her newest fan. You will, too,if you choose to read it,because it's sweet, funny and hot...and with some intriguing surprises along the way...

So,just pick it up!

A single dad & a demigod? Fated? Oh yeah!

Welcome to the magic that is Vale Valley. EE Silver had created a wonderful addition to this series. Old friends are back. There are quirky families, stubborn men with secrets, an adorable baby, and steamy sex. You are gonna love this book!
This is Jonah and King's story. Jonah gave up everything to move to Vale Valley with his daughter. His dream to open a much needed daycare is strange for an alpha. When a hot omega named Kingston helps him remodel the old house, things get sticky, literally. There is instant at attraction between them. But King has been burned by alphaholes who just want him for his family connections. His parents are gods after all.
You will laugh with them, cry with them, cheer for them, as they fumble their way to HEA. King's trust is fragile. Jonah's secret may tear them apart. But love and Fate have a way of overcoming any obstacle. And somerhing worth having is worth fighting for.
Get this book. Read it. Love it. You won't be able to put it down.
This book contains adult themes and language, mm sex and is intended for mature readers only.

3.75 stars

Ultimately, this is another good story in the Vale Valley world. I liked that King was able to defend himself, he didn't need anyone to save him, but still knew he could count on his family. I liked that Jonah was willing to be patient with King, give him the time to decide what he wants (though it was still a rather fast, typical of the fate-mates trope). Although I could see Jonah's argument for why he kept his secret in the beginning, I think it was drawn out a bit too long in the story. There were a few other hints that I'm not sure if they're supposed to be references to other stories (there is some overlap with another story from this season), but it felt a little like loose ends with some.

I'm looking forward to seeing more of Jonah and King in the winter stories!

I had an ARC edition, so my review is for the story itself and not based on grammar/editing.

King is am omega who's been burned in the past by alphas who only want him as a trophy because of his status and lineage.
As a result, he's begun to believe true love doesn't exist and if it does, he'll never be lucky enough to experience it.
He's also very strong-willed and opinated, which just seems to go against the grain for traditional omega roles.
Jonah is a sweet, loving alpha with a baby daughter.
He also bucks tradition because he simply loves children and has no problem being the caretaker for little ones.
Both men are hiding secrets from their past.
King finally comes clean about his background, but Jonah feels his lie has gone too far and is also holding on to his stubborn pride.
When his truth is revealed, it's almost the end.
Luckily, King is able to put it aside and Jonah wins his heart completely.

Nice! Very Nice! I love Jonah and King. Jonah, Alpha shows up in Vale Valley with baby Anya who he explains is the boilogical daughter of close relatives who were recently in an accident. He is a non shifting selkie. Kingston, cousin to Katarina, dauther in law of Rosemary Vale is directed to Jonah to help with renovating the building for his future child care. Jonah learned to give King a wide birth and let him live on his own terms. Jonah had a secret while not big, would be big to King given his history. Will Jonah come clean? How will King take it? Does the daycare repair finish on time for the launch? Will they take the step to become a couple? I absolutely fell in love wiht Jonah and King. My biggest complaint is, I wish I could read more about them and their family and the daycare. Well done! I received an ARC from Booksprout for a review.

This is a sweet and sexy romance with strong well developed characters and an entertaining story line. The author brings both King and Jonah to Vale Valley and weaves a cute story with neither of them looking for love yet somehow finding their mate. But both men have secrets that will need to be dealt with before they can find their HEA. The author brings their story to life with detailed scenes and had me hooked from start to finish reading. I'm looking forward to more from this author.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.

One of the things I like most about the Vale Valley series(other than all the mpreg) is getting to read great books by new to me authors as well as long time favorite authors. This one is a new to me author and I enjoyed the story very much. Well written characters and plot. And it will be interesting to see how many of the side characters and family members get their own stories in the future.

What do you do when you're caught between the pull of being fated mates, and the secrets you carry that make you want to push said fated mate away? Watching as Jonah and King fight this battle made this an adorable, amazing, poignant, engaging, endearing, and sexy story that I recommend getting ASAP.

Great quick read

I loved Jonah and King as a couple. Jonah was the only one that could handle King, but he shouldn't have lied in the beginning to anyone about Anya. He knew Kong's previous issues with Alphas, but went ahead anyway. I just wish it would be had a different ending. I would love to know what they were having and see King during birth and as a parent.
