Read this within a few hours. A fun dark tale, but the pace and reveals came too fast, reminded me too much of ACOTAR, and the characters lacked the depth needed to hold the story together

Fae of Nightmares

This was sooo good!!! Theres a lot of deceit and trickery and underhandedness that make up this story. The world is fantastic and terrible. The creatures and fae that inhabit this world are scary, cruel. She has built in mythology that is very unique, I've never heard of or read of before. There is a dangerous quest that is just done so good, you swear it's you doing these things. I know this review is nowhere near what I wish to convey but I would implore you to read this. It is outstanding and chock full of the creepy fae you've only glimpsed at in old folklore tales. This also has the feel of a old world gothic within. There's a fair bit of violence but done well. This has to be one of the best books I've read all year. You've got to check this out. I absolutely cannot wait for the next book as we get to travel to the other courts. I loved both Drayce and Neara, they are both fearsome characters. Go get this!!!!

Neara has has had close encounters with the Fae before and it forever changed her life. But when her dying father is about to be snatched from their home by them one night, she knows she would do anything to keep him from getting taken to the Fae Queen Melusina.

When King Drayce Salamander tells Neara the only way she’ll keep her father safe is to go with him, she agrees. But Drayce is no beautiful yet evil Faery. He is a hideous creature. What is he? But with Neara desperate, she offers him the only thing she has - her virginity. Drayce accepts, but one thing Neara should remember: Never bargain with a Fae.

So I’m really in a Fae slump since finishing Amelia Hutchins’s Fae Chronicles series. Those were so good - better even than Sarah Maas - that I can’t even stomach other Fae stories.

This was so so. The writing was clean, but I had a hard time focusing on it because it didn’t grab me at all. When I keep looking at the status bar to see how much more I’ve got left to go, then I know it’s weaker than strong for me.

There were a few redeeming factors. These Fae were tricksters and generally naughty, which I prefer. They were smoldering, but the descriptions did not do them justice. And there was not nearly enough romantic tension, sexual tension, or anything else. And some parts were just downright confusing.

So, if you’re serious about your Fae, don’t look here for satisfaction. But if you’re casual about your Fae tales, this might be the one for you.

Not my cup of tea, it was a bit predictable and the mc only ever thought one thing over and over ‘I have to save my dad’ so I didn’t really get to know the character. Ans world building wasn’t that great :/

Like any other reader, I have my favorite tropes and cliches. I picked up Curse of the Fae King expecting another enjoyable and predictable Beauty and the Beast retelling, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much more this story offered. The heroine is relatable, the love interest is the perfect mix of vulnerable and arrogant, and the villain is truly fearsome yet still retains some depth. The world building is superb, weaving ancient faery lore into an imaginative new world. Most impressive are the plot's twist and turns. As soon as you think you know what's coming next, the story shifts seamlessly onto a different path in a way that will keep you in thrall.

My nitpicks about this book are relatively few. There are some punctuation errors in the early chapters that threw me out of the story's trance, but I'm admittedly sensitive to such things. I also found the author's repeated use of the word "males" rather than "men" a bit puzzling, but it wasn't enough to ruin the overall writing for me. Finally, there were a few things that I felt could have been better expounded upon. In a world with such rich mythology that was otherwise so intricately explained, there were two small moments in the story that I felt more explanation was needed.

Ultimately, I recommend this book for anyone with a love of faeries or fairy tales, slow burning romance, steamy love scenes, and well-crafted characters. I look forward to the next book with great anticipation.

Heat Level: Medium

This book is the case of being plopped right in the middle of the road. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't amazing either. I didn't DNF it so it earned at least 2 stars there. I finished it in one sitting, but I have a feeling if I had set it down, I wouldn't have picked it up again.

There were some interesting things about this book, such as the fae being dark and tricky. It set a dark tone to the book. I also found the "Beauty and the Beast" aspect slightly interesting even though it was almost painfully predictable. I don't know if it's being marketed as a retelling, but I didn't pick it up for that.

So the things that were not too great: The pacing was too fast. There was no time to connect with or get to know the characters. That also means the character development was practically non-existent in my opinion. There was no romantic or sexual tension built, so when the inevitable happened, it didn't feel like a satisfying moment because everything was rushed. The plot itself was fine. There wasn't anything original about it, however, I was mildly surprised by .

I do think this author has potential. I noticed she has several other books out, however, they were all published in 2020. It seems like she's pushing out books pretty fast and maybe they could use a little more time...? Regardless, I won't be continuing with this series.

This is a new author for me and I really LOVED it and am going to stalk her on amazon now lol. Just because it's an ARC doesn't mean I rate high, trust me. This is my first 5 star review since I joined booksprout, because it is that good. Action, yes! Romance, yes! Wonderful world-building? Yes!! Now, I am about to email the author if book #2 will be out shortly! Oh, this is a cliffhanger, but a nice one.

This book one of an enemies-to-lovers romance series is well written and gripping and is filled with intrigues and betrayals, plot twists and turns and Celtic mythology. The story will just grab you from the get go and hold on tight cause it’s a fantasy world of faeries, dark magic, adventure, suspense and other mythical beings Complete with a strong kick ass female mc. Can’t wait to read book 2!

Surprise, surprise, it's another retelling of Beauty and the Beast with Fae! Hey, it's popular for a reason, and I won't deny that I love it, but after a while, all the stories start running together. This one was surprisingly original, however! Definitely a different take, and an enjoyable one. It's not a terribly demanding story--is there such a thing as beach read dark fantasy-romance? But I enjoyed it enough to want to read the next book in the trilogy, and bonus, it has this deliciously creepy, old-school fairy vibe that made my wee gothic-loving heart nearly explode with joy.

Great, fully fleshed-out characters and excellent world-building. My only real complaint is that, while I liked the two MCs just fine and was definitely invested in them, I was never quite in love with their story. It just didn't resonate with me as much as I had hoped.

Still, it left me game for Book 2, so we shall see. 😃

꧁꧁Book Review꧂꧂

Enemies to lovers. Predictable. Curse breaker.

This story follows Neara who can see the fae creatures that prey on humans. When she is tricked into be taken to the land of the fae by the mysterious King Drayce, they’re sent on a daring quest as part of a bargain for her father’s freedom.

There was nothing particularly original about this fae romance but I really enjoyed the predictability of it. The usual fae “rules and lores” all applied including the rule of 3 which appeals to my fairytale heart. I enjoyed the world building and the fact the quest took them to different places with a variety of monsters.

I won’t lie, I was a little disappointed that the smut wasn’t more smutty (with the shirtless man on the cover I was expecting full on fae junk flapping everywhere but it was YA washed of a decent spice level).

Overall, this was a poor man’s The Cruel Prince but I still enjoyed this world and am impatiently waiting for the second book to be released in paperback in UK.

Likable

This story was different and kept me interested. There was a few misspellings and I felt a little more world building with a little more background story in a few places could have made the story more.
Either way it had good characters, plenty of action,, all types of fae, evil, good and romance. A good read.

A girl with the sight who knows not to tempt fae, a fae king cursed not to look like himself, an unachievable quest, and a fated love; Delia Castel has all the ingredients and whips up an excellent fantasy novel based on the Beauty and the Beast Fairy Tale.

Something you can be sure of is if there is trouble, there are fae. Neara keeps her head down because she can see the fiends, unlike the others of her village. Her father has instilled the importance of not bringing herself to their attention. She's young and pretty, two things the fae like to collect and corrupt. So, over the years, he's trained her into a warrior and taught her all the ways to fight the monsters.

Yet, the worst betrayal is one of your heart, and soon Neara is in the land of the Faerie fighting for her father's life with an unlikely ally in King Drayce Salamander -- the name made me laugh too, it's just too silly. I think the author needed to try harder, regardless of the tool she was utilizing for the narrative -- Drayce and Neara must complete a quest set out by Queen Melusina to free her father and return them both to the mortal world. But faeries aren't to be trusted, and her allies are faeries, her hope is dwindling, and she might be losing more of herself than just her heart.

Curse of the Fae King is a wonderful book with a strong plot-driven narrative with a slow-burn romance. The characterizations are on point, and I enjoyed the machinations of the various fae. Delia Castel gives the reader these little bits of perspective that make you wonder from scene to scene, which is the right side of the cause. You wonder who is a good guy and who Neara should be working with, who is manipulating her, and who is supporting her. The betrayals are heavy to the heart. You want the characters to be good.

I loved this book. I can't wait for the next.

It’s fine. I had a hard time keeping myself interested.
It’s edited fairly well with only a few issues in terms of spelling/grammar/extra or switched words, however, there are several cases of continuity issues that get confusing where it seems like the author forgot what they previously wrote. Only a handful and most of them aren’t even noticeable for most readers but two of them are pretty egregious and incredibly important to the plot.
My biggest problem was with the writing itself. There were a lot of things in the lore that the author just assumes the reader already knows and doesn’t explain, which makes even less sense when there are also a lot of pauses for info dumps.
The female lead definitely has some weird insta love going on. She nurses him to health, where he’s not conscious so they don’t communicate, and that’s the majority of their interactions before she is now in love with him. It’s only a few days and they don’t interact much let alone get to know each other and she has a lot of reasons to hate and distrust him but sure love makes sense. He’s also sort of her brother and she’s also expected to mate with her four uncles so >.> I’m out.

Hum… looks interesting, I always love when a book starts with a map … damn I hope this one is good because I need to recover from the book hangover the last book I read left me … well I hate when I start a series and the thing isn’t complete yeah yeah my fault but I HATE it , so I have high expectations for this one , the cover is awesome too hahaha.

Woah this book is so rich in Irish mythology, and it’s perfect !!! Because my new hobby is learn more and more about it , just perfect !!! Hmm the plot is interesting, her father apparently has a debt with the folk … and damn the girl with a wish to have normal hair , called the Wild Hunt in the night of Samhain … and they killed everyone in her village… well , this look like a foolish thing , but I don’t judge I could do it too hahaha and worse wish for something even more foolish , like having a Kelpie because damn they are so cool , but that could probably kill me hahah.

Wait a minute… he is King and … he has a Queen ? WTF ? Ok so … she’s just apparently her stepmom … good hahaha . I like our girl each time more , she’s cunning, sharp minded and thank Goddess she knows how to fight . Damn that pool really reveals horrible secrets .

“Enough.” Captain Stipe held his blade at Drayce’s throat. I drew my iron sword. “If that blade so much as touches him, I’ll ram this through your belly.” Stipe lowered his sword and curled his lip. “You brought her into the palace with iron?” Drayce’s lips curved into a lazy smile. “A gentleman would never divest a lady of her means of protection.”

Poor Drayce now I understand him , and I already like him VERY much hahahaha he’s so sad and lonely, and what is most impressive is that he isn’t old like the leads of the books about faeries I normally read , its really refreshing, I love the way he and Neara act together, their protectiveness about each other is so good!!! The best is I think they don’t even see how attached they’re, we can’t forget that Neera is the one protecting him too …damn me to the pits If I don’t love a powerful female lead , sooo cute and sexy obviously.

Damn Enbarr is sooo cool , he makes me think of my own stallion full of personality and always ready to scare the hell out of everyone, but is every time a sweetheart with me , even when he is having one of his pissing context with whatever that walks . Ok I not know if Neera is right in not trusting anyone, yeah including our boy , or if she really get this from her mother genetics the overwhelming suspicion of everyone and all … but I understand her , damn I probably could do the same things she’s going to do even if in the end everything is just a misunderstanding.

Can have so REALLY minor spoilers ahead…
.
.
.
.
.

Ok Neera is so motherfucking strong , and I. Not talking about just in power , she’s really strong minded, to have the bravery to do what she did ? Oh girl you’re a full badass I’m serious, not every has the gut to kill your mate.

Damn this book was surprisingly good , a little rushed in the romance part but understandable this happens with mates hahaha , I really like Neera she’s damn strong and I can’t wait to know what happens in her future .

A young girl can see fae and know how to defend herself against their magic. But she is an outsider in a town, a weirdo, a healer living on the outskirts. Because to know things she lived through is to be endangered.
But only till a gancanagh appear and seduces mayor daughter to dance dirty cancan (figuratively speaking) in front of the bewildered crowd
description
she could not resist and helps a girl.

And this is how she blows her cover. Three more fae come to her home. One of them takes her father hostage and she bargains with a faerie who happens to be cursed with the appearance of a beast. She promise to give herself to him in exchange for her father freedom. But he, of course, agrees and abducts her father anyway. So she have to join fae on a dangerous quest to find three powerful magical artifacts.

But of course she falls for that super scaly dark fae prince 💋💋💋

It's a good story. Adventures, chemistry, betrayal.

Almost there...

Beautiful prose-it made the heroine sound like she had this immovable strength as well as being sensible and a force to be reckoned with.
I also absolutely loved the mythology in this book, the author did her research, the world was crafted well enough to support it's characters and the gist of the plot.

My only concern was there were wee bits and bobs of the plot that seemed a bit inconsistent with the mythology that had been described to the reader. It's as if you wanted to stop and ask the author more questions. But it's only the first book, so there'll be more to this world and more that might be explained.

The romance was interesting, whenever fae are mentioned it's always about their unearthly beauty etc etc, so it was a nice touch to have a love interest character who wasn't just a beauty. Things seemed slow, & then they weren't, with a touch of steam that tends to focus more on the emotional aspects.

I enjoyed that even though it seems to be older YA, there was a bit more maturity and depth than you'd usually see. The plot not as predictable.

This storyline has a lot of potential, needs a bit more depth and rounding off the nuance and complexities a bit better, but I'll definitely be reading the second book to see where the story goes.

Honestly a bit hard to put into words why I didn't enjoy this book.
The story feels forced. The MC is forced to undergo three "trials" and you would expect those to take a while. But it seems as if they took a short two day trip around the land and finished everything. Major plot twists are revealed early on and thanks to that everything happens as you'd expect it to go.
It just felt so flat overall. Plot flat, character flat, everything flat.

BUT 2* because I loved the ruthlessness of the heroine. Let's just kill and burn a bunch of soldiers. And not think about it for chapters and question if it was the best decision. Nope she is just cool with it.

And ACOTAR. I hate comparing Fae books with ACOTAR, because SJM doesn't hold the rights on every Fae story. But the whole setup with the curse, the gease, the trials.. even that the male love interest controls shadows... Her becoming some special kind of strong Fae.. getting a ring from some monster as a test..

And my last issue.. the names. I read Darcy instead of Drayce (made it slightly awkward) and Neera instead of Neara... A "me issue" but Neara just doesn't flow. And didn't help that I read the book in one go till 5am.

I really wanted to like this book and it was a fast easy read. But just so flat.

Neara has spent the last ten years of her life going to dramatic lengths to avoid the fae. When her and her father are kidnapped and she is bound to impossible tasks to win his freedom, she doesn't see much hope. Drayce seems to be helping her but she also doesn't know who she can trust.

I didn't like it all that much. There were a lot of things missing for it to be a good read for me. The period of time that this book covered was just way too short for everything that happened, the relationship between Neara and Drayce just felt so forced and fabricated. The plot line in general was just kind of weak and I found myself not caring how it ended either way. It also felt like another imitation of ACOTAR, which I know we've all had enough of.

Maybe I've just overloaded on this type of book recently, but this one just didn't stick out to me. I don't know if I'll read the next one because there doesn't feel like a lot that I need to know. It wasn't the worst book I've ever read but it also isn't one that will be really remembered.

Didn't not finish

I really enjoyed the first chapter of this book, but unfortunately it went downhill from there. When I found myself at 50% barely skimming entire pages I had to call it a day.

The book lacks depth. The characters are flat and 2-dimensional, making their motives and behaviours unconvincing and somewhat cringy. Am I really expected to believe that the MC would be snuggling up to the chest of the King of the Underworld where she promptly falls asleep just a few days into her endeavour? Whilst simultaneously riding a flying horse/skeleton thing? Am I meant to believe she trusts him after watching a (frankly confusing) vision in a puddle? Am I meant to believe that a commander is so enamoured with her or entirely threatened of her he spends an entire night standing outside her open bedroom door, hurling abuse or trying to coax her out so he can do nefarious things to her? Hmmm, not so much.

With a lot of fleshing out and the cutting away of the unbelievable aspects of these characters, this book could be good, but unfortunately for now it has to go in the DNF pile.

I had such big expectations for this book and... it didn't deliver.
Ok, to be fair, the plot, the world and the language are great. The intricacies of various curses, different types of faes, magic world - very nicely done.
The tension between the heroine and the main interest - wonderful. But... I kind of didn't notice the transition between this tension and literal hate to "I love you". To me, it happened absolutely out of the blue, without character development and discovery of each other. Not a fan.
And then there's the sex scene that is there but at the same it isn't. These scenes are one of the reasons for me to read such books in the first place, to feed my imagination and to leave me hot and bothered. Here the author gave me no details. The scene starts, MC undresses her love interest, her clothes comes off and... here she is, silently screaming from pleasure. Where the hell is in-between? What exactly made her scream? And then we're done, the guy falls asleep and she proceeds with her adventures. Very disappointing. O_o

DNF 60%

There is something with me and fae books with the title "Curse of the _ king" (..."Curse of the Wolf King"), ...I hate them.

This book was insultingly boring and confusing, and not in the complex fantasy world kind of way but in the what is even going on right now and why type of way.

How many mild plot twist can you add to a book until it makes it interesting? please someone tell this author because she also doesn't know.
Also, the protagonist is annoying af and the romance (?), what even was that?

(The fact that I'm ending the year DNFing a mediocre fae romance book kinda sums up how my year went lmao).
