Medical genius Amanda Polias witnesses her adopted mother, Becka, dying in spiritual torment. Compelled to help Becka, Amanda stops her own heart to provoke a near-death experience and follow her mother's spirit into the afterlife. She quickly discovers a horrible secret: a blood-infused vortex now tears through the spiritual realms, trapping the souls of the dead and preventing them from finding their final resting places. She realizes that hundreds of thousands of people die every day, and so countless innocents will only find doom awaiting them after death. Someone created the vortex. Amanda must find the culprit, but she can't do it alone. Joined by her devoted clay golem Mac, the immortal Greek warrior Dee, and the snarky Zulu fairy Sipho, Amanda is determined to set things right even if she has to kill a few mythical beings along the way.
