The First Spell

Rate this book
I'm the last Callahan left, and now I'm the only keeper of all the secrets.
Even Nathan, who is the last Cain, after all, has no access to this information.
The question is, what now? These new people came into my life and they expect me to tell them what to do next, to help them carry on the mission. How do I do this when I can't even control my magic as it keeps bursting out of me?
It's clear now that Nathan and I are tied to each other. I need him to teach me how to control my powers, and he needs me to unlock the mausoleum. Only together can we fulfill this mission.
But I wonder if that's the only reason that keeps him here, with me.

My third book by author Lana Melyan, I enjoyed seeing Nicky getting her confidence back. Having understood what her father wanted, she started her training with Nathan. Leadership qualities too started budding in her.

The writing was smooth, I liked how the author told me Nicky's story as she went into each step of her training. I got to see her in different angles in these books. In this, the author has added another armor to her. I saw her strength and determination. I liked how much her character has grown down the series.

Love too blossomed along the way and kept the pace of the story going. Friendships and jealousy, fun and work, birthdays and mission, all of that made this the starting point of the training for war which Nicky would have to lead against Kenneth and his followers who had to be stopped at all costs.

Overall, the book evoked my curiosity, and I hoped that the next would bring about a few twists and shockers.

I can't wait for the next one!

I'm still into the story, and enjoying every minute of it! I really like how the author decided to handle the romantic scenes between characters. I have a feeling things are about to pick up, and get a bit hectic. At this point, I'm so happy I decided to give reading "episodes" a try. I can't wait for the next one to release in this series!

So that scene where our girl performs her first spell was hot! This episode has a lot more feelings and truths. I'm digging the characters more and more. I love the romantic side, and am glad to be getting into more of the nitty gritty magic and secrets.

Another well written episode. Continues to captivate me for sure!

I was so hopeful that this series would get better but if it does, it hasn’t happened yet.

I’m annoyed as I saw such potential in the first episode. I finished episode 3 thinking; ‘wtf, where did that come from?’ There’s very little build up and yet suddenly everyone is in love? Why? What do they like or even know about each other. I’m not opposed to insta-love stories and yet this one is completely unbelievable. Add in a rather cryptic conversation where our hero basically says ‘I loved you so much I went and slept with someone else to get you out of my head, but it didn’t work’ and I’m ready to quit this series.

I’m three episodes in and I still think it needs editing, the dialogue needs some serious help and I really wish the author would flesh out books so that they could do the plot, which still intrigues me, justice. I’m not sure if I’ll bother with episode 4 now or if I’ll just skip to episode 9 and see how it all plays out.

I loved it!

It was so enticing that I couldn’t put it down, this book grabbed my interest from the very first page. I couldn’t put it down, I had to know what happened next. The story is well written with a very good storyline. This is Book (Episode) Three of The Weight of Magic series. This is a fast-paced, easy and short read, perfect for a quick jump into an exciting world of witches, high school, vampires, and danger. This novella series is an exciting ride with unexpected turns and twists; it's like a TV show in a book form. You're one click from starting your binge-read.

She’s the last Callahan left, and now she’s the only keeper of all the secrets. Even Nathan, who is the last Cain, after all, has no access to this information. The question is, what now? These new people came into her life and they expect her to tell them what to do next, to help them carry on the mission. How does she do this when she can't even control her magic as it keeps bursting out of her? It's clear now that Nathan and her are tied to each other, she needs him to teach her how to control her powers, and he needs her to unlock the mausoleum. Only together can they fulfill this mission, but she wonders if that's the only reason that keeps him here, with her. So with all that and more this story pulls you in and holds you tight. It’s a must read. I highly recommend to everyone.

Nicky is the last Callahan and Nathan, who she appears to be falling for, is the last Cain. They must work together but Nicky wonders if that’s the only thing he is interested in. all the new people around her look to her for the answers but she can’t share all of the information and doesn’t know what it all means yet. All she knows is that she needs Nathans help and he needs her to be able to unlock the mausoleum; they can only fulfil their mission together.

Nicky has started her training with Nathan and seems to be growing in confidence quickly which is lovely to see. Nicky has been shown to be blossoming, her character is growing with each book alongside the others around her which is making good reading. She eventually begins to get together with Nate and we also catch up with the relationships of the other characters.

This third book brings together some of the characters and focuses on their lives and Nicky’s training. These books have great endings which ensure that you want to continue on and read the next book in the series which is great, its much like binge watching a series on Netflix but reading instead and one where you can slot in a cheeky little book in between other things because they’re so short and entertaining!

After reading this book, I wanted to write and post this review to share my honest experiences toward the story.
Continuing the story on the episodic style, this amazing series continues. This time, the plot thickens, more secrets are uncovered and we begin to crack the mystery of Nathan Cain and his role in Nicky’s journey. As with the previous parts of the series, it is incredibly well written and engaging for such a short read, and that skill is to be commended. I have to say that after reading these three episodes, I am hooked on the story and am eager to know more.

And the love story begins

Nikki is in love! Or is she? I'm so worried she is getting played. Nikki has so much on her plate but she keeps getting distracted. The storyline seems to be a love story in this one. The main magic story seems to take a back seat in this installment. Not sure how much I like that.

It just feels forced and a bit flat. I don’t believe their attraction and the love word tossed around so fast. I can believe list for sure but live in a blink of an eye feels forced.
The story line is interesting and I want to see where it goes but the main characters don’t feel believable. I’m honestly more interested in Logan and Connie ( oops if I got the names wrong)

Love it

I started this series on June 14th and only just finished the series on June 16th. It a definite page turner since you really want to know what happens next. Which is why I didn't do a review when I finished the first book but after I finished the series.

A good book but a little short for a book

I enjoy the content I just think it was only 89 pages long I think all nine books would have made a fantastic book. It felt like I had finished chapter 3.

The First Spell is the third novella in this series by Lana Weylan. The Weight of Magic is about Nicky finding her powers as a witch, her parents are dead and she's making plans to get rid of The Order and its evil leader Kenneth Nash.
Nicky's best friend Connie has a small amount of magic but Nicky has no idea what her powers are or how to control them. In this instalment she's under the tutelage of Nathan who taps into her emotions to help with Nicky performing her first spell, but Nicky has emotions for Nathan she really shouldn't, after all, she's 18 and he's an immortal several hundred years old and the last in the family of Cain.
These are great wee books if you've only got a short amount of time. Lana is building a story of witches, vampires and other supernaturals which has a love story or two running through it.
Looking forward to the next installment.

With each bit of info revealed leaves the reader with even more questions. I am sure they will all be answered in the end. I prefer longer reads to this episodic type of style but overall this is a fun and interesting read that keeps my attantion and leaves me wanting more

This is the third short story in this series and the plot is heating up as loved that Nicky is getting a much stronger character and has now taken on board everything that her father told her, with her magic getting stronger all the time.
Now that Nathan has shown his feelings for Nicky (at long last) and they have got together as a couple, even after Nicky had all the warnings not to trust him,but she has made her mind up and this is what she wants to be with Nate.
They wasn't much action in this third instalment, just about how the couples were getting on and there relationships, so i am hoping that in next few books this gets delivered as this series hots up with some action.3.75 stars.

Third part to this quick read series and the story is moving on. Nicky seems to be growing up fast and taking on the responsibility for her family’s mission is moulding her into a brave and decisive witch.

Nicky has finally made the step towards the truth and has gone through her father’s books. Her relationship with Nathan is growing too and it all seems to be making her stronger.

However, there is more in store for Nicky and her friends and I have a feeling she will be tested more than she realises and more than she things she is ready for.

Thank you to the author and TBConFB for this book.

The First Spell is the third instalment in The Weight of Magic books. In this visit to Nicky you get to see her understand of her powers grow as she spends time training and discovering more of her families past.

These books are great with a balance between the family feud and the relationships of the growing group, which enables you to get to know the characters as well as their powers.

I have loved the ending of each book as it leaves you wanting to keep reading and I am now keen to read what is coming next in the fourth instalment

I received a copy of this book from TBC Reviewers request- Thank you
This is the third book in the series and honestly I’d recommend reading the books in order to make the most of the content. This was a calmer novel than the previous 2 (in the previous novels there was a lot more drama in the couples relationships) this seems to be more of a character update novel- Lana has set the scene in the previous 2 books so this books is about filling in the gaps in the characters stories.
A lovely read

The next instalment of Lana Melyan’s engaging and enjoyable story about a young witch called Nicky moves more towards romance. Ideal for Young Adults and older children but enjoyable for older readers who like fantasy as well, there are further developments in the history of the coven to which Nicky belongs. She will face tough decisions and life and death challenges as she seeks to complete her mission in future episodes. I am looking forward to reading them in due course.

Recap: Nicky lets Nate in and casts her first spell.

Review: Episode 3 and we've moved firmly into the love story which is fine, I'm a sucker for sweet romance. I liked the imagery when Nicky uses her magic for the first time and the character interplay is natural. However, you wouldn't be able to dip into these books, they must be read in order.

Things are really starting to heat up in the third instalment of this series, as they say they plot thickens’...
The story just keeps getting better in book 3 as relationships between the characters are beginning to develop in extraordinary ways.
Reading this story in the episodic style keeps the reading wanting more and keeping a keen eye out for when the next episode releases.

The story continues. I was a little disappointed in this 3rd installment. It read more like a typical YA novel, with discovered sexuality overshadowing the bigger picture plot line. It's a good read, just not as good as the first 2.
