Did you ever get caught in an unplanned situation that slowly got weird, out of control, and took you and a member of the opposite sex to a place neither of you expected? I don't mean it was beyond your wildest dreams. We're talking alternate reality, here. Well, it happened to me. And then it got even crazier.
Just finished Showering with Jennifer and as usual Lubrican entertained me. No one was humiliated as that is not his style. Just a humorous quirky tale but also plausible in the real world. Bob and Jennifer are first cousins, raised by his parents after hers were killed in an auto accident, but they fall in love. Fast forward to Bob's serving in the Air Force with Kaylee and she is also in love with her cousin and proposes a solution to both of their predicaments. I like Robert's humorous "tongue in cheek" style and approach to his stories so this is book number 76 that I have read
This is a preamble for each review of a Robert Lubrican stories that I do. I just copy and paste this for future books as I need to qualify these types of books before I get to the actual story. Come to think of it, it is sort of what the author does at the beginning of each of his books. The author actually explains that he wants to write about a person's first sexual experience. The problem is that amazon and other sites won't let people write about sexual activity for anyone under the age of 18. As if people under the age of 18 don't have sexual thoughts or feelings. That is his POV. So, he writes the book the way he envisions it and then goes back and changes the age to 18. This can make it, so the person feels a little sexually stunted. What seems perfectly reasonable for a 16-year-old to feel/think about sex it is harder to imagine an 18-year-old not having more self-awareness. Another thing that his stories seem to focus on is some sort of taboo nature. Something that society at large would frown on. I can understand and agree. When I hear stories about alternative marriages where a man might have 5 wives and a lot of kids, I feel a certain way. I feel the women are being coerced or brainwashed or something. What would I think if I heard the story from that women when she was like 60 years old and she told me she could not imagine a happier life how would I feel then? If an older man chases after a younger woman, we call that grooming which is absolutely wrong. What happens when a younger woman becomes infatuated with an older man and chases that man? Is it wrong? We think it is because it doesn't seem healthy. What would we think though if they ended up happily together for the rest of their lives? It is easy to say that a young person just doesn't know what they are doing when they are younger. This is very reductive. They might not have the experience to know about long term consequences, but their feelings are valid. So, a long blurb turned short. This author writes beautiful stories about new sexual experiences and love that will probably make most readers cringe a little at first. If the reader can get past that cringe factor and realize this is a fictional story the actual relationships and communication is something that would be beneficial to most couples, I think. Again, if you can get past the "wrongness" of the relationship to begin with.
This one is a little bit tabooer than what I am comfortable with.
This story brought up all kinds of different emotions for me, not that I am against or being judgmental or even experienced any such relationship. Honestly, I can't place why this book affected me like it did. I am not sorry I read it. It just left me emotionally discombobulated.
