Escape to the Pacific Northwest, where magic and mountains meet murder and mayhem.
Down on her luck witch Althea "Ali" Everwood has big plans for her life in Mt. Rheanier, a sleepy mountain town in the paranormal world. It might be because her foot practically lives in her mouth, or because her habit of running headlong into every situation is better suited to a bull on steroids than a witch, but Ali just never manages to catch a break.
Her luck goes from bad to worse when she stumbles across the body of a murdered dragon shifter and then gets fired from her dead-end job in less than twenty-four hours. And things get even hairier when the family of her slain friend offers a reward. Every paranormal in town comes out of the woodwork to make some cash, including her eclectic seventy-something grandmother who isn't afraid to hex anyone who gets in her way - even her granddaughter. But all Ali wants is justice and she will stop at nothing to find the person responsible.
Thanks to some help from her whip-smart best friend Willow, Ali quickly hones in on a prime suspect, and is confident she's going to beat everyone to the punch, including the mysterious - and muscular - new enforcer in town. But the killer has other ideas, and the closer Ali gets to uncovering the truth, the closer she is to becoming the next victim.
Will Ali be able to solve the case before the killer puts a permanent end to her investigation?
Going Through the Potions is the first book in the Pacific North Witches series of humorous paranormal cozy mystery novels.
Samantha Silver lives in British Columbia, Canada, along with her husband and seventeen-year-old dog named Terra.
When she's not writing cozy mysteries, Samantha loves travelling (she's most recently been to Egypt, Jordan and Florida) skiing, eating Dairy Queen, and complaining about how hard running is.
Going Through the Potions is the first book in the Pacific North Witches series.
This was a great start to a new series.
We meet Althea (Ali) who lives in the paranormal town of Mt. Rheanier. Ali is not having the best time. She failed her Paranormal Fixer exam and can't test again for six months. She finds a dead dragon shifter and gets fired from her job all in the course of a day.
The very wealthy family of the victim is putting up a very large reward for the capture of the killer, and Ali sees this as her opportunity to make some money to get back on her feet.
I seriously love the character of Ali, she is feisty, smart, flawed and fun to read.
The story is so well written and no way in heck did I guess who the murder was.
Add to that, Ali's family, including her crazy grandmother and overbearing mom, the secondary characters were fantastic.
I cannot wait to read the next book in the series.
A cute cozy paranormal mystery, set in an alternate reality, where witches, shifters and magical beings of all sorts exist. Ali is a witch who has just failed her test to become a magic fixer, when she stumbles across the body of a dragon shifter. His parents offer a huge reward, and since she lost her job, Ali could use the money. She’s competing with a lot of people to be the first to figure it out though, including her crazy grandmother Rose. The book is intriguing in its setting, the alternate reality is the other side of the veil, where magical beings dwell. Life there is different, and the story reflects this, from the currency used to the jobs available. Still, it’s a fun story, and an enjoyable, quick read. Recommended for those who love their mysteries with a fantasy twist!
How can you lose your job, because you are banned from going in to the area you need to get to because of a murder investigation? That is what happened, the company that you worked for expected you to harvest the plants need for the potions they manufactured. Now you have to find a new job, more than that? You have to tell your Mom that you lost the easiest job you could get. But the murder victim is a friend, you feel that you have to help solve it. You didnt realize just how much trouble your going to get into. This is a fun twisty, adventure, with friends, enemies, frenemies, and allies. A must read. I received this book as an ARC, this is my honest opinion.
Ali has as much trouble passing exams to get a decent job in the paranormal world as she does with not shooting her mouth off and getting herself into hot water. When a shifter dragon is murdered and his family offers a huge reward, Ali is among the crowd trying to find the killer. Her troublesome grandmother, Rosie, and friend are also after the reward money so the race is on! I like Ali and her mismatched family as well as the setting of the story. I also like the way the author pulls you in with her writing so you're on the sidelines encouraging Ali on her hunt to find the answers.
Go ahead; suspend your logic and disbelief for a time, and let your imagination go soaring as high as you dare. The main character is likable and really funny, prone to klutziness. The mystery is quite interesting, trying to find out who murdered the heroine's dragon shape-shifting friend and why. I will confess: I was totally wrong! Althea the witch is worth reading about. And make sure you notice the name of the coffee shop, which is genuinely clever. Great start to a new series.
I like the characters in this book and the magic. Enjoyed reading every word from page one onwards. The writing style is fresh and action packed. I could not figure out the murderer ahead of time, so bravo! Very exciting read. Grandma Rosie is a hoot!!
Very good job with your new series. I like Ali’s grandmother. Very interested to learn about Phoenix Chocolates and Pacific Cove. I enjoy it whenever the different stories overlap with all of the characters. Can’t wait to read the next book.
A good diverting read. I liked the characters and plot. Not really exciting but overall ok. May pick up the next installment when I need a change again.
This was a gripping and easy to read book. This promises to be a great series. It has strong characters, whom you'll love and a story line that just flows. Great Reading Everyone!!!!
When a beloved dragon gets murdered, it’s up to a scary smart witch to solve his murder. But she also has to help other dragons with what’s wrong with them
When it comes to finding the killer, surprises are always around the corner and that's what Ali had found out when she'd solved the death of her friend.
I do enjoy the main character is is so witty. I also like her familiar that was introduced in this book. Can't wait to read the next one in the series.
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I completely change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring down a lot)
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see 3* differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-) ------------
