When superheroes abandon a city, the wolves move in.
Kit Baldwin defeated Great Power, the superhero corporation that kept Break Pointe on its knees. For her trouble, she's won a broken city suffering its worst winter in years. Kit investigates the body of a strange, giant wolf found among the ruins and realizes a pack of Empowered wolves is encroaching on Break Pointe. They want justice. She wants the truth. As she tries to find out who killed the wolf, Kit is drawn into a complex mystery that tests her power, her integrity, and the fragile peace she fights for.
BLOODBACK continues the adventures of Kit Baldwin of EVER THE HERO, a young woman with alien power and human faults.
Darby Harn is the author of the SPSFC quarterfinalist Ever The Hero, which Publisher's Weekly called "an entertaining debut uses superpowers as a metaphor to delve into class politics in an alternate America." His short fiction appears in Strange Horizons, Interzone, Shimmer, and other venues.
Kit Baldwin has raged against the (corporate) machine, gotten into fist-fights with super-powered PMC soldiers, and become a super-powered crusader in her own right. But that doesn't mean she can solve poverty, keeping the disenfranchised alive during the winter, or even stopping the black market that some people require to stay alive. So when it comes out that now super-powered wolf packs are another issue she has to deal with, in addition to her own personal problems, it all becomes hard to take.
Bloodback is about what happens after the bad guys are defeated and the heroes realize there's still a mass of consequences left to deal with in the wake of all that destruction. Kit has to wrestle with a new menace to her city, but she also has to struggle with the idea that beating the bad guys doesn't necessarily solve personal issues. Especially if those bad guy challenges were just a way to pretend those personal problems didn't exist.
This is a great look at the often ignored idea that once the fisticuffs are over, there's still a mess to clean up. It's great to see Kit realize that the mess that needs to be addressed isn't always the carnage of a beat down, but the often ignored intricacies of trauma and insecurity as well.
A fantastic follow up to Ever The Hero. This book is badass super heroes, sentient wolves, alien technology and more, but mostly it’s about the connections we make and those we avoid. It was an absolutely delightful, fast-paced, emotional read. Add this one to your list!
Giant wolves, heroic characters plus well developed plot..! What is not to like? Action in well written read combined with an engaging set of circumstances make this an very interesting read as well as a fun read...! I want mre...!
I rarely find a "between books" novella that adds layered worldbuilding and tremendous character depth, but BLOODBACK does both in spades. This is every bit the must-read EVER THE HERO was.
