Murderers and monsters alike stalk the snow-drowned streets of Ekamet.
When nightmares creep out of the dark, distant past, who can face them?
It will take the eldritch powers of the spirit-witch. The ruthless cruelty of the undead. And the monstrous implacability of the Malykant at his best — and his worst.
But when it costs everything they can give, can a trio of killers win against nightmare?
If you can’t beat the dark, the only way through is to join it...
Konrad Savast returns in four final, brutal cases in the collected Malykant Mysteries.
English both by name and nationality, Charlotte hasn’t permitted emigration to the Netherlands to change her essential Britishness. She writes colourful fantasy novels over copious quantities of tea, and rarely misses an opportunity to apologise for something. I loved this so much I bought the paperback. Gothic/Russian/fairytale/horror/fable/fantasy. Brilliant writing. I was desperate to read to the end and find out what happened.
Death’s Executioner: The Malykant Mysteries Volume 3 contains Books 9 - 12 in the Malykant Mysteries series by Charlotte E. English. This is another fantastic, atmospheric paranormal mystery series with lots of dark and dramatic tones which I loved. The series has an historical setting with a Gothic Russian or Eastern European vibe. The world-building is highly original with dark and moody tones that really help to set the ‘atmosphere’ and make the story/series come to life. Konrad Savast is The Malykant, the servant of the God of Death. His ‘job’ comes with some supernatural abilities, exceptional detective skills, wealth and standing in the community, as well as two bloodthirsty and macabre ‘familiars’, in the form of spirit serpents who are both prone to some petulant antics at times. It is Konrad’s job to seek ‘justice’ for the souls who have met their death prematurely, by being murdered. He investigates their death/s, using good old detective work coupled with some supernatural skills, and hunts down the killer/killers and ‘sends’ them to his master, The Malykt, the God of Death. As the stories/series unfolds, Konrad goes from working alone, with his familiars in tow, to making friends, who then become part of his ’team’- while adding an extra element of intrigue and enjoyment to the series. The characters are wonderfully crafted individuals with their own unique personalities, quirks, and flaws. I was a fan right from the get-go. Throw in murder, crime and investigation, monsters, ghosts, tension, secrets, action, adventure, friendship, intensity, suspense, and so much more- and this became quite a riveting read. There are 12 books in this series, or three volumes each with four stories- and I read them all, back-to-back. The individual stories are quite short, being mostly under 100 pages each- which allowed me to devour the series quite quickly.
This volume is made up of 4 books (Books #9 - 12): -The Zolin Conspiracy (Book #9) -The Tarasov Despite (Book #10) -The Malific Curse (Book #11) -Shandral (Book #12)
I am sad to finish this series as I would be very happy to continue following Konrad, Nanda, Inspector Nuritov, Tasha, Ootapi, and Eetapi on many more ‘adventures’. Very much looking forward to reading more from Ms. English. Happy Reading…
This is the third volume of collected stories about the Malakynt, a human invested with extraordinary powers who is sent by the Lord of Death to avenge those murdered. In the first story, The Zolin Conspiracy, Konrad, Nanda, Alexander and Tasha investigate the murder of a man found missing his head in an alley behind Konrad's house. The second story, The Tarasov Despite, is about a seemingly unimportant woman poisoned over months. In the next story, The Malefic Curse, there’s a malevolent essence out of the spirit realm which mauls and murders a vagrant and the final story, Shandral, deals with the consequences of the Malefic.
I really enjoyed this final volume of he Malakynt stories. I liked all the characters and felt very invested in getting them some kind of happy(ish) ending. It was fun to watch Nanda and Konrads's relationship develop over the course of the series as they grow to trust one another. Tasha and Alexander are also great characters, although I would have liked more of their stories. These books are dark - murder, revenge, macabre doings, but there’s also quite a bit of humor and friendship. They’re a little bit Sherlock Homes, a little bit horror with a dash of Scooby-doo. Great covers, too!
Konrad, Nanda, Tasha, Alexander... And others who can't quite be ignored but do move the story along.
I have enjoyed this entire series and have marked the books as those that should be read again by firelight and a glass of wine.
The Malykant, Servant of Death, and cold monster in the pursuit of justice for the victims of malice, slowly changes. Konrad finds his humanity through the help of friends and a love of quiet desire and strength.
I love the slow and genteel quality of the life of Ekamet and Assevan that shows through as the characters walk, run, laugh, cry, are lost or bewildered, or triumphant in the solving of a case.
Any lover of mystery and/or fantasy will find this series as fulfilling as did I.
"The Malefic Curse"
"The Tarasov Despite"
"The Zolin Conspiracy"
Really got hooked on the characters, atmosphere, plots for each for the individual stories as well as the underlying foundation plot line. This made me able to follow the character’s progress through the building blocks of the tale itself. Wonderful finish for the characters. I say finish ;:please understand , author, I will be happy to read more about the Malykant (s)any time!
This third volume of Malykant stories is less grim in some ways than volume 2, but still horrifying because of how much is now at stake. While it didn't provide *quite* the desired happily ever after, it's as good as it can get for poor Konrad. I just wish that there were more stories. This series would actually make an awesome TV series.
I’m incredibly sad for this series to end, but the resolution is heartwarming. Of course, the ending could be not the ending, if the author chose to continue. See? The perfect ending which could be not the ending. What could be better than that for an amazing series. Now, I wait in hopes of more……
I have grown go love Konrad and his family. I didn't know what to expect when i started, only that it was Halloween month and i wanted something a bit spooky. I got do much more than i wished for. The world building is fantastic and i want visit. The cast are vivid and real. This series was a joy.
Every story unique, combining together for a surprising and satisfying whole. I enjoyed getting to know the well drawn characters and the tightly plotted mysteries all mixed with imaginative take on eastern and Russian folklore.
A totally fresh read to me.some of y the concepts were so new. I felt I walked in the protagonists shoes. Excellent plotting w it’s the sub plot of saving a soul. Thoroughly engrossing read.
I am so glad I was encouraged to be brave enough to finish this series. I just love these characters so much. Might need to go back and re-read them all very soon...
Amazing as always. I loved to see Konrad develop his feelings and bond so profoundly with Alex, Tasha and of course Nanda. Great ending to a very warm series (even when it is about murders)
Everything I loved about the first set of novellas in the series, but better! The 8 (or so) years between the beginning and end of the series have only improved the author's writing. Konrad, our poor battered and broken hero has returned, this time with several supporting characters that by now have become his friends (and the poor guy's life would be so much easier if he only realized this). The writing is still brief, but has far more of the supporting details that were missing in the earlier stories. And the stakes are higher, the plots are more complex. What's not to love? Worthy of a full 5 stars!
