The Last Days of the Fighting Machine: The Martian Apocalypse of Victorian Britain

Rate this book
The Martians were on the rampage all across Queen Victoria's Britain. Nothing man possessed could stop them. But then the huge fighting machines began to slow down and lumber to a halt. One by one, the Martians inside the giant machines began to die. Soon there were just scattered and failing remnants of the once-mighty tripods wandering here and there among the derelict monuments. Even the red weed was dying as Mother Earth began to reclaim her own. The human survivors became emboldened and they emerged from the hiding places intent on fighting back.

C.A. Powell (Colin Alan Powell)
Born 1961 in Bow district of London. Now lives in Fenland of Cambridgeshire. Loves reading and writing.

When I read and do reviews, I always categorise the type of book in my own mind and think of the particular audience that might enjoy. It does not matter if it is classic, pulp, indie, sci-fi etc. It is all a personal reflection from my own bubble of thought. I always seem to take something from every book I read.

The Martian carnage in Britain continues in this latest tale of Victorian SciFi suspense by Author Colin Powell. Ships from around the world are trying to stop the menacing tripods with their blazing canons. The crew of the French vessel, the F.S. Ney, are doing their fighting best against the alien beasts, but take a fatal hit. A few men escape to the British shores, but is anyplace safe?

Constable Adrian Llewellyn faithfully keeps up his daily routine of surveying his ravaged countryside, looking for survivors and surveilling the brutal Martian beasts that still roam his turf. Few people remain, the last of the brave souls of the mass population who did not flee and perish by horrible means. P.C. Llewellyn sees a change in the atmosphere--the Martians influx is now few and far between, and those left standing on their three-legged pods are flailing. A chance encounter brings him, the French sailors, his former poacher nemesis, and a family with a mentally challenged son together. Will this homespun group be able to survive against the remaining alien beasts determined to extinguish them with their deadly technology?

This is a page-turner read, filled with human drama and suspense as these fledgling few make a grand last stand. The unexpected hero in this fight against the beasts will make your heart swell with pride. I thoroughly enjoyed this latest Martian invasion tale from Author Powell and can't wait to see what happens next!

Wonderful down to earth characters brings this story alive. Right from page one, it draws you in. You are hoping that the Martians will finally be defeated, they are slowly dying, but are still extremely dangerous. Just when you think it is over another surprising twist makes you think again. It all builds to a wonderful climax. A must-read from a very talented writer.

Mayhem on The last days of the dying Martians

The story starts with the French crew losing their ship and rowing to the coast of England. Laying low is Lewis the poacher and a stray dog Gippy. In the quaint but half destroyed village Mrs Steed and her son Reggie and grandson Jimmy and trying to survive the attack from the dying Martian machine. A policeman is heading to the village to check on Mrs Steed and her family but on the way meets the sailors and the poacher. They plan to take down the Martian which is now terrorising the village, with heat rays and tentacles.
This is a wonderful short read, great story and well written. Ideal for any War of the Worlds fan. Second in the series by this author. Highly recommend.

Another good read

Read the first of these Was of the Worlds tie ins and thoroughly enjoyed it so I looked forward to this one. The plot of this takes place over a much shorter time period and I was gripped from the start. Once I was hooked I couldn't put it down and read it in one sitting, now hoping the third part of the trilogy isn't too far behind....
