Gabriel Wolfe #10

Ivory Nation

Rate this book
A troop of paras stumble on an elephant's butchered corpse. A sniper observes a glamorous Royal couple on their wedding day. A charismatic ultra-left politician sees his chance to strut on the world stage. What happens next sends ex-SAS member Gabriel Wolfe deep into the heart of a global web of intrigue, ivory poaching and political corruption.

'We spilled blood into this soil'

Julius Witaarde is the passionate young leader of a white separatist party in South Africa. He dreams of establishing a whites-only homeland in the north of the country. But dreams like his don't come cheap. And conventional sources of finance are closed to him.

Together with two unlikely business partners, one at the highest level of government in South Africa, he moves into ivory smuggling.

In the forests of Botswana a small group of British paras are working with local game wardens to defeat poachers. Halfway round the world, the Royal Family's youngest princess is getting married in Windsor. As church bells ring out, so do shots.

The domestic security agencies scramble to find the killer. Gabriel and Eli deploy to Botswana to investigate the disappearance of the paras, who never returned to base.

A trail of blood, and tears

Gabriel and Eli find themselves caught in a complex and bloody maze of lies, evasions, criminal deals and power-hungry politicians who believe destiny counts for more than the truth.

Recently reunited with long-lost sister, Wei Mei, Gabriel travels to Laos, the Gulf States and on to Laos and Hong Kong before he discovers the terrifying truth about the people he's investigating.

'You're playing a dangerous game, Mr Wolfe'

Face to face with the man he knows he has to take down, Gabriel finds his options narrowing. But what is the right decision? For him, as well as his country?

Fantastic adventure!! Gabriel works with his fascinating girlfriend, Eli Sochat and even hooks up with an Andy Maslen favorite, Stella Cole, in an exciting,action-packed adventure that takes him from South Africa to Hong Kong investigating those behind Ivory poaching and a death during the Royal Wedding of a young princess!! The scenes are clear, you find yourself crying with dust swirling around you viewing the heartless death of an elephant, tusks removed, bones left with several other elephants grieving in the distance...Then you are back home, where a newly elected PM is making havoc of all well-established rules and laws!
Gabriel is placed in many difficult positions, where he must decide for himself which way to turn..
If you enjoy great characters who become real as you go along, amazing scenes that pull You right into them, and a hard-working man who just wants to do what is Right, then grab Your copy of this intriguing story today!!
I received an ARC from the author, also got a new copy for my kindle, and I offer You only my honest thoughts and feelings in this review!!

What does an assassination on a member of the royal family in England, poachers in Africa and Gabriel Wolfe has incommon? Well they are all part of Ivory Nation by Andy Maslen. This is a very interesting story that takes part in many parts of the world and Wolfe is up against some really bad characters. He has help though from his girlfriend and from a intrepid detective from the metropolitan police. I found the book well written as usual and the topic interesting. I can really recommend it.

5 Out Of 5 Stars– A FANTASTIC READ…Meets All The Criteria of its Genre, and Then Surpasses it. Everything Comes Together…Characters Are Well Developed & Believable. The Plot Grabs Me. Holds Me. Then Draws Me Deep Into My Imagination Where I Remain Until “The End”. And Don’t Forget “Fantastic Editing”. This is a “HIGHLY RECOMMENDED” Book.

“Ivory Nation”, Just When You Thought “Gabriel Wolfe” Couldn’t Get Better, He Does!

“Ivory Nation”, is the latest book in author Andy Maslen’s “Gabriel Wolfe Series”, which began with “Trigger Point” in the year 2015, is, in my opinion, the very best in this series to date as the 10th book in the series.

I make this statement with confidence, as I’ve read every book in this series, long before I received the honor of becoming an ARC Reader for this extremely talented author.

A word of caution, this book is not for the squeamish, as there is a great deal of violent content between its pages, though it isn’t “gratuitous violence” writen simply as filler, its violence is necessary to carry the plot to its ultimate conclusion. If you’re uncomfortable with that, then I suggest you find something else to read…”Mary Poppins” perhaps.

Mr. Maslen makes no apologies for what he writes, and neither do I, for what I read, and what I enjoy.

I would like to point out that there seems to be a discrepancy between Amazon and Goodreads, as Amazon, and the author list this as Book #11 in the Gabriel Wolfe Series, while Goodreads lists it as #10. Since Goodreads and Amazon are owned by the same Corporate Entity you would think they would be the same...After all that's only logical.

If you enjoy, as I do, books in this genre that are extremely well writen, with great story lines, believable characters, (who have a sense of duty and honor), then to you I highly recommend this book. I do however, if you are a first time reader of this series, recommend you begin at the beginning of “Gabriel Wolfe’s” story, “Trigger Point”, and work your way forward to this novel, as you will enjoy it more.

Ivory Nation finds Wolfe travelling to Botswana, Laos, and South Africa to get to the bottom of an elephant poaching ring... but the real danger lies back home, where the newly-elected PM has a dangerous hidden agenda.

The story is as tightly plotted, fast-paced, and action packed as you’d expect, and longtime Wolfe fans won’t be disappointed. With the UK fresh from a divisive election, the political angle also infuses the book with an added depth of realism, though I thought Tammerlane’s “Corbyn on steroids” was relatively milquetoast compared to the villains Wolfe has dealt with in the past.

That said. it’s a quick, thoroughly enjoyable read, and a worthy addition to the Gabriel Wolfe canon.

Just looked back to see what I said after his book 1 Wolfe adventure. "So awful I need to collect my thoughts before giving a score."

Then later:"Dull unimaginative dialogue, long winded, too much description, poor characterisation." And hey this is book 10 in the series and I have to say little has changed although I've given it a 3 for trying. I was only lured into giving this series another go by a 99p Kindle offer. On a positive note I have certainly developing the ability to skip read. Zoom over 20 pages and nothings really happened. And just when I thought I'd soldiered through to the end (cos I hate to be a DNF) there were some chapters from the next epistle - I skip read those as well. Probably accept these are not for me even at 99p.

A new international Gabriel Wolfe thriller from Andy Maslen.

International indeed. The book starts with a group of British paras (i.e., members of a parachute regiment) supporting a Botswana military elephant anti-poaching unit, a sniper observing the wedding day for a Royal couple in Britain, and the wedding being observed by Gabriel and Eli.

Add to this are trips by Gabriel to South Africa, Laos, Hong Kong, and the Gulf States. And along the way he either meets or observes some very dangerous people.

Follow Gabriel and Eli as they investigate the international ivory smuggling business and deal with the people involved with it. It's going to be a great read for sure!

Ivory Nation Andy Malsen

A corrupt newly elected British Prime Minister. His devious plan to replace Britains existing government and all it's officials, including the King who will be under house arrest, a ruse for his security. All levels of Britains security M15, M16 are shut down. The Police duties greatly modified, restructured. A silent coup. Many are outraged but defenseless to act. Not Gabriel Wolfe. Ex SAS, a highly skilled tier one operator who works as a clandestine British operator. Sometimes the best laid plans can go up in smoke when your not the one holding the match. This is an excellent read!!!! My highest recommendation

Enjoyable if a bit samey

Having kept going to read the 11 books in this series I find the storyline a bit formulaic and in my opinion Andy Macken has resorted to increasingly greater graphic content to keep the narrative “fresh” and keep the reader’s attention.
The series is just as much about Wolfe’s PTSD and how he tries to deal with the demons within and the need for revenge as the character’s adventures.
Nevertheless, Andy Maslin is great storyteller and appears to have researched each and every location in immense detail giving the reader the opportunity to breathe the same dust and smell the same smells as Wolfe himself.

Gabriel Wolfe and Eli are back, along with Stella Cole...
While ex-para Gabriel Wolfe's adventures have always triggered my page-turning, I'm very impressed with author Andy Maslen's deep research into the wilds of Africa, the under-reported poaching of endangered animals, and international corruption. Maslen adds an intriguing character from his other series, rogue-DI Stella Cole, to follow the trail of assassination and race supremacy. Take an afternoon nap as you'll be up late with this thriller.

What could possibly be the connection between the new British Prime Minister, the assassination of a princess and elephant tusk poaching in Africa? Or is there any at all? That is what Gabriel and Eli, along with Stella need to find out. Sounds easy for Gabe. Unfortunately, the new PM is blaming the assassination on Israel and order all Jews out of the country. He also has shut down the Department. This means whatever they do will be without sanctions from the government and illegal. Eli and Stella have the most fun in this one.

This is Book 10 in the Gabriel Wolfe series by Andy Maslen and Ivory Nation is possibly one of his best books to date in this series. The storyline was excellent and well written and the idea of having Gabriel Wolfe, Eli Schochat and Stella Cole all together in the same book was just genius.
The Ivory poaching was very interesting and informative and the three main antagonists were very nasty villains clothed as Oxford graduates.
Highly recommended.

The Savior Of The Nation

A many facetted plot where the nation is in danger under its newly elected Prime Minister who has his own sinister agenda. A royal princess is assassinated and the nation is in turmoil.

Gabrial Wolfe is on the case, and travels the world to uncover the massive plot that has led to the betrayal oh his country. It's action all the way in this riveting story.

Disappointed

Having raved about previous books by Andy Maslen I was very disappointed by this offering. The outline of a brilliant plot was there but for me far too often the book drifted off into the far distant fields of utter fantasy. Not wishing to ruin the book for other readers by adding ‘spoilers’ I’ll leave it there! I’m dyslexic and I spotted a typo by the way as well King with the K missing at about the 70% in mark.

Wow what a fast paced all action read this one is.
Plenty going on as Gabriel and Eli hunt down Ivory poachers and murderers. Plus the wonderful DI Stella Cole joining in as well, trouble maybe happening around the world, but also at home in the shape of a new prime minister. Can the trio sort out the problems, well read this great story and find out.

Could have been better!

The author has an interesting plot, but for it twisted up with his own brand of conservative politics. If you enjoy a fantasy where all the "bad guys" are "Marxist liberals" and the "good guys" are rabid conservatives then this story, and perhaps this author, is for you!

As I know very little of the stolen ivory trade, this was both fascinating and heartbreaking ~ not only for Gabriel, but for the elephants and their protectors, as well! It's right that Mr Maslen has Gabriel dealing with current international topics that are old ~ yet new ~ thank you for this eye-opening account.

A riveting read

Ivory Nation brings together three of Andy Maslen's most fascinating and exciting creations, Gabriel Wolfe, Stella Cole and Tara Wolfe. They combine to battle against a corrupt and megalomaniac prime minister who is heavily involved in the elicit Ivory trade to fulfil his fanatical plans for a new republic. A blockbuster of a read.

Gabriel and Eli team up with one of Andy’s other characters, DI Stella Cole, to take down a white supremacy group. Along the way the newly elected British PM and the illegal ivory trade in Africa become a part of this. It all begins with a royal assassination, from there it’s a whirlwind adventure around the world. You simply won’t be able to put this book down until you’ve finished it !
