In this seventy-five-page novella from the world of Erin Hunter's #1 nationally bestselling Warriors series, discover the story behind Tigerclaw's rise to power as leader of ShadowClan.
Cast out of ThunderClan as a traitor, Tigerclaw will not rest until he has his revenge on Bluestar, Fireheart, and the rest of his former Clanmates. But first he must become Tigerstar of ShadowClan....
Readers will be thrilled at this look into the ruthless heart of one of the most infamous cats in the Warriors series.
Erin Hunter is inspired by a love of cats and a fascination with the ferocity of the natural world. As well as having a great respect for nature in all its forms, Erin enjoys creating rich mythical explanations for animal behavior, shaped by her interest in astronomy and standing stones.
Good but too short for me. I would've liked more about Tigerclaw before he became Tigerstar. We have bits and pieces of his life from several different books but this is the first one that is from him point of view. I enjoyed it, short as it was, but I really really wanted more.
I loved the book. It showed Tigerclaw's reason for being so savage and cruel. It honestly made me a bit more sympathetic towards him.(not much though) He still is the bad guy in the story. I love the book and the entire book series. Go Warriors!
Read on 4/21/23: new review: This is the Dutch translation of Tigerclaw's Fury. It's a mini adventure you can read between the series or independent from them. It's interesting to read a bit about the side characters, even though it's short. You must admit, Tigerclaw was one bad ass mad cat driven by anger and revenge. He was very cunning and only focussed on his goal: killing Firestar. But, as a reader you already knew about that. It could've been interesting to read about Tigerclaw's past, how he grew up, his life in the Thunderclan and that sort of things.
Read on 9/9/21 This is the Dutch translation of Tigerclaw's Fury. This book is a mini novella and an enjoyable read between the other books. It was interesting to read about the point of view of Tigerclaw, because all the other books are about the Thunderclan. Allthough you allready know what will happen to Tigerclaw because of the other books, still it was interesting. It was a whole new insight and allthough Tigerclaw is still a bad kitty, as a reader you discover the reason why he became cruel.
I'm not sure what this novella adds to the series. Sure, it explains some things about how Tigerstar rose to power in ShadowClan, but even though I forget how that was justified in the main series, I wasn't haunted by the exact question of "how" or "why." I was actually disappointed to learn that Mapleshade is somehow behind this villain, too. It felt too convenient of an excuse, and while I'm sure cats such as Thistleclaw had an effect in making Tigerstar the villain readers remember him as, I dislike the mechanic of Mapleshade literally speaking into his mind. Honestly, the biggest lasting impressions I got from this novella are the mistakes, such as referring to Frostfur as "he," which jarred me out of the happy nostalgia of seeing characters from the first series back on the page.
An entertaining tale on Tigerclaw. My only complaints are that it was a bit shorter than I expected, and a lot of characters who have been previously killed make appearances in the book, and cats who haven't gotten their warrior name appear with their warrior name.
Summary: In this seventy-five-page novella from the world of Erin Hunter's #1 nationally bestselling Warriors series, discover the story behind Tigerclaw's rise to power as leader of ShadowClan. Cast out of ThunderClan as a traitor, Tigerclaw will not rest until he has his revenge on Bluestar, Fireheart, and the rest of his former Clanmates. But first he must become Tigerstar of ShadowClan. . . . Plot: The plot was brilliant, and it gave you an entirely new perspective on what was happening during that time. Of course, I new exactly what was going to happen because it was in the original books. This just gave you a whole new insight on what was happening. Writing: Erin Hunter is my second favorite author of all time, and I love her/their writing to pieces. It's so simplistically complex (if that makes any sense). Characters: Obviously, Tigerstar is terrible and nobody in the right mind likes him. I did see a whole new side of what was going on, but that didn't change my image of how horrible he is. Overall & Recommendations: This was a great novella, and had nothing wrong with it. If you love the Warriors series, then definitely give this novella a shot.
Not one of my favorite Warriors books, however it did explain some unexplained items that had left me wondering.
First the book seemed to be trying to "spread it's own wings" but it was hampered by preconceived ideas of Tigerclaw. Multiple times Tigerclaw did a good deed, but right after it was like he had an after thought that the good deed would help him gain power. I felt that the book would have been better with a few instances of Tigerclaw being good, simply to be good.
I loved learning about the cats who abandoned ShadowClan with their former leader, even though it was inconsistent with the Original Arc. I loved learning that Clawface and Rowanberry still had feelings for each other, that Dawncloud and Stumpytail were good friends and overall more about Jaggedtooth, Tangleburr, Blackfoot, and Nightwhisper. Tangleburr is now one of my favorite characters.
One good thing this book did was further prove that Tigerclaw really did love Goldenflower deep down and he deeply cared for his kits. He was worried about them when the fire struck the ThunderClan camp and almost risked his life for Bramblekit.
This book was a nice addition to the Warriors series, but it still gets three stars for simply keeping Tigerclaw a 2-D character instead of a 3-D character.
I was really disappointed with this short story. I thought it would give us some insight on either Tigerclaw's time in ThunderClan and why he did what he did (obviously to rule the forest but there's always more to it than the protagonist understands) or even his time as Clan leader of ShadowClan, but it just shows what happens after he's exiled from ThunderClan and how he gets into ShadowClan. There was hardly any inner monologue of Tigerclaw like you'd read in the other Warriors books. It was all "Tigerclaw did this" and "Tigerclaw did that" and I felt like we didn't get any insight on his motives beyond wanting Fireheart dead. That's good and all but the story itself was pretty boring, and didn't really show me Tigerclaw's "side" at all, like the book description claims. I'm glad I only borrowed it instead of buying it.
Tigerclaw was always a great villain and, although at first his whole association with the ShadowClan seemed a bit forced, now I realize that everything was well planned. I love how Tigerclaw can play the role of a good hearted cat when he's anything but. As always, this was my favorite serie and it's an amazing book!
This book was fine, it didn’t really explain very much and I think it should have focused on HOW he first became angry but it was okay. It was very bleak and showed some important parts but overall wasn’t that great.
I loved this book. I always wanted to know what happened to Tigerclaw, and how he became leader of ShadowClan. But I don’t think Tangleburr was one of his rogues... Overall, it was a great book.

“If mercy is power, then I have never been more powerful.”
Erin Hunter's Tigerclaw's Fury is a short novella that follows an angry cat now ousted from his clan. When Tigerclaw's treachery is revealed, thanks to a foiled murder attempt on his own leader and the meddling of a young warrior, Fireheart, he sets out on his own intent on revenge. Furious and hellbent on retribution, he must first lick his wounds and then find whatever power he can to destroy the clan he once hoped to lead.
A Murderous Mind
There's something about power-hungry sorts that make it difficult to handle being within the dark depths of their mind. Tigerclaw is a devious and manipulative sort of evil. Everything he does is calculated, carefully planned in order to get him the power he has always coveted. Nothing he does is without that motive. Thus, following Tigerclaw and his fury after he is ousted from his clan upon failing to kill his leader, is a ride.
A Slow Takeover
Unintentionally, perhaps, Tigerclaw sets his sights upon the dying Shadowclan. While at first he simply returns to the rogues he'd once used to attempt a coup on his clan, this dangerous cat quickly sees an opportunity with the sick cats of Shadowclan. Understanding that they won't always be sick, Tigerclaw sets about building a reputation, striking at the clan while they are at their weakest. And he does this, mind, by showing compassion.
It's truly fascinating to see how kindness and charisma can deeply manipulate, especially during hard times. Despite having seriously dark motives, it is difficult for the Shadowclan cats to see this. Instead, they see a benevolent cat who helps them in every area without asking a thing in return. They are easily tricked into seeing him as a sign from StarClan above, come to save them.
And perhaps he did, for a time. But only insofar as it served his own ends.
In Preparation
This novella simply fills in the blank time within the larger story. It answers the question of where Tigerclaw went after being banished and the even larger one of how he managed to convince Shadowclan to make him their leader. This is the origin story, in a way, of Tigerstar himself. And it's a pretty good one, even if it doesn't really tell you much more than that.
A fun read! This was the first time I have read one of these short-story ‘novellas’ (they were made about 6 years after I stopped reading the series as a kid). When I found out they made various short stories like this, I was very excited.
I ALWAYS wondered WHAT happened to TigerClaw after he was exiled from ThunderClan and somehow became leader of ShadowClan- it’s something that I’ve always been interested in. I was very excited to read this book and read about what happened. He was very ambitious and this short story shows. It was also a cool feature to have his ‘inner-voice/conscious’ written in dialogue form for the reader to read and understand what’s going on in his head. It moved along very quickly due to its intriguing plot and smooth dialogue.
It really fit in perfectly, taking place immediately following #3 ‘Forest of Secrets’ and through the end #4 ‘Rising Storm’. However, I must recommend reading both of those BERORE reading this novella... trust me on this: it will make more sense seeing everything blend in and fall out of place. I had a blast reading this book and comparing it to my hypotheticals that I had as a kid.
In this re-read, I am reading the Warriors books in chronological order as opposed to release date order. I’m looking forward to reading more of these short-story ‘novellas’ and seeing how they all fit in to the main series!
Note: also the first e-Book I ever read. Need to read more to have a valid opinion. My early thoughts: I still prefer print, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought I would be.
I much prefer the super editions or arcs of Warrior Cats to the novellas (with the exception of Ravenpaw's Farewell which is absolutely beautiful). This novella provides good background on Tigerclaw perhaps not really causing you to like him but certainly have more understanding and perhaps sympathy for those events which shaped his behaviour.
