Reynard Drake, solitary cybersecurity expert and curator of the Drake family fortune, would rather be chucked in the midden than forced to bed an omega, but as the selected Amethyst candidate for the mating experiment, he has no other choice. Resigned to his unhappy fate, he takes solace in the fact that one thing will never change—his virtual rival, Magpie, will always be there to keep him on his toes, even if he has been strangely absent from the internet lately…

Diamond Disgrace Misha Vasiliev has a secret. By day he learns what it takes to warm a dragon’s bed, but at night he’s Magpie, renowned hacker and dark web service provider who steals from dragons in his spare time. His favorite target? Reynard Drake, whom he's only ever seen in pictures, but whom Misha wants more than anyone else.

And now, with a faceless threat closing in on his cloister, quite possibly the only one capable of saving his life.

Magpie is a 64,000 word steamy omegaverse mpreg-ish romance set during the events of the Forbidden Desires series. It contains pretty things hidden where the sun don’t shine; a scandalous screenshot or two; plenty of laughs; its fair share of tense moments; and, of course, “Beagle!” For maximum enjoyment, Magpie is best read as a companion piece to the Forbidden Desires series.

Piper Scott debuted as a trio of authors looking to write together for fun. Their collaboration led to three novella-length books (Love Me, Save Me, and Keep Me,) before life sent them in different directions, leaving just one author with an omegaverse plot bunny that wouldn’t leave her alone. Left to her own devices, Piper Scott writes scorching but heartfelt contemporary omegaverse romance about men you can’t help but fall in love with.

2.5 stars only for Everard and Harry

Finally decided to go back and give this another shot. Everard and Harry pretty much saved this for me. There were a couple of times where I teared up and felt bad for Misha and Reynard but other than that, I still didn't like Misha at all and Reynard was just meh to me. Though, I did like the parts where he went all Mine, mine, mine. I also liked the epilogue. But, this was my very least favorite and Misha pretty much ruined it for me.

First attempt at reading:

Stopping at 21%. I might come back to this later but right now, Misha is on my last fucking nerve. He's so obnoxious. He comes across spoiled and overindulged. I've had enough for now.

Dare I say it?
This is my least favorite of the series.
There.
Don’t kill me.

What I missed was a buildup.
This one just flew straight into the relationship.
With a lot of telling.
Before I knew it, the dragon and omega were in bed.
I didn’t feel the love.
I didn’t feel the heart.
I didn’t feel the relationship that these two had created before they even met.

So much of this series is character driven. And what glorious characters they have been! But here, I didn’t see them mesh because it was all done in a rush.

That being said, here’s the FUN you can expect:
A D/s power dynamic
A submissive dragon
A very bossy omega
Dragon manties
Yes, let me say that again,
DRAGON MANTIES
Dastardly eggknapping plots
Harry, Ev & Steve
Bertram makes an appearance (is the next book his)?
Egg-preg
Knotting
Love & Bonds

My rec? Absolutely! Note: read the series first to fully enjoy this draconian treat!

Sexy, Quirky, Silly, Heart-warming, OTT, Emotional, Hilarious, and my First 5 Star Read of 2020

Magpie  made me laugh and get hot all over. Then it made tear up and choke up ; followed by chuckling, giggles and lots of snickering. Replaced by some weeping and turning on waterworks ; next moment , I was squirming , feeling all twinkle toes and frisky, light-hearted and fuzzy with joy;  just to go, through it all once again. Seriously folks , it was a truly fun and entertainment rollercoaster.

It felt like I had multiple personalities by how fast my emotions changed. Yep, call me Sybil, it's seems we have few things in common. LOL 😏😊

I. Love. This. Book. It has it all:
📝An amazing storyline , plotlines, and Forbidden Desires series overall ARC continuity.
💖Humor, steam, naked dragon's shifters, snarky banter, big hordes, brotherly love, mystery, kink, sexy lingerie and a fluffy cat.
👬Two strong, interesting, likeable, and perfect for each other heroes , Misha and Reynard.
🐲Gorgeous, shinny Dragon's eggs and whelps.
💖Misha personality, drive & charisma only comes second to Harry, he being my favorite character.
😍😍And love, lots and lots of LOVE.

And talking about Harry, he is as wonderful and funny as ever. Fortunately, we get to "see" a lot of him ,Everard , Darwin and Steve. As well as, Beltran and the others Drake men.

I tried to be as vague as I could, as to avoid giving spoilers. If you've read and loved the other books in the series; you are going to enjoy Magpie too. If you're new to the series, what you're waiting for? Really, get on it. I promise you are going to have a great time reading it.

Will Re-read: Abso-freakin-lutely, yes!
Recommend: Abso-freakin-lutely, yes!

Reread/Relisten: April 2024

Since the first read, I am leaning more towards a 4 star read, I loved Misha and Reynard. While there are unanswered questions, I know since the series is over that they will all be answered at the end.

Original Read/Listen: May 2021
Audio: 5 stars
Book: 3.5-4 stars

Compared to the last book I liked this one way more. But I felt like there were questions still unanswered like the “villain” of story, who are they and what do they have to do with Bertram.. (I have a feeling he’s CIA or some letter combo spy association)

Overall cute but I wish we had more answers than questions.

4.5 stars! I expect amazing things from this series, and I'm happy to say I so far have gotten everything I could want from these stories. But I maybe loved this one just a little bit less than the others.

I did love it, absolutely! There was much to love. Charming, engaging characters, all the Drakes, dragon rage, and a sweet, kinky relationship. I loved Misha & Reynard as themselves, and I loved them together. But the start of the book felt kind of rushed. There was no getting to know them, they were intro'd and boom!, Misha moved in and took charge. Which I kinda loved but the relationship was fast, even for dragons, and Harry's experiment aside.

That said, the rest was everything I love about this world. I loved how all the Drakes were there to support Reynard and Misha, even if Rey felt he was the forgotten brother who didn't fit in with the rest. I loved the battle and seeing Reynard turning his dragon loose, the whelps <3 and, in the end, I loved what Reynard and Misha became, together. And of course, besides the fire they breathe, dragons are smokin' hot!

Hopefully we get to know the mysterious Bertram next!

Spectacular!!!

Piper Scott and Virginia Kelly can keep on writing books in this universe till the end of time! I'll never get tired of these incredible characters, the amazing chemistry, and the wildly creative storylines.

Between this one and Swallow we've gotten some nice, kinky relationship dynamics. Magpie has the older, larger dragon as the submissive and the delicate omega is the dominant - and Scott and Kelly do an amazing job with it.

Please, please keep having Michael Ferraiuolo perform this series. His voices are amazing, and he can keep on speaking with a Russian accent till the end of time. I'll never get tired of listening to it. He's amazing.

Honestly, you can probably read any of these stories as standalones, but there are so many wonderful characters who contribute to the story, I think it's best to read them in order.

an audiobook copy of Swallow was provided to me for the purpose of my honest review

Ooh a seriously spicy twist in the dragon tale

I absolutely adore this series from these two authors and Magpie was no exception.

I still can't make my mind up which pair are my favourite but Reynard and Misha came close.

There was a cool subversion in the usual dynamics here too which I loved and it was as hot as all the others in the series.

I also thought the little bit of a suspense angle helped to drive the narrative and give another perk into the sense of family which is so strong in the Amethyst Clan.

Ev and Harry didn't disappoint and I was eagerly waiting for the moment when Everard started using pet names for Misha.

At that point you know he's well and truly accepted!

2.75- I wouldn't (objectively) give this story 3⭐ at all

This book started out very promising, but sadly didn't live up to the initial promise or excitement.

😈 Omegaverse - dragons
🔵 Omega/Alpha; t/b
🟢 Somewhat BDSM (not really convincing)
🟡 Hackers, but the closest thing to hacking was tying the other up with the ethernet cable (yes, you've read it correctly)
🟣 Harry and Everard saving the story again

The story follows Reynard, the reclusive amethyst dragon, who's online privacy is being constantly invaded by Magpie, a russian Disgrace omega hacker.

Misha, the omega, hacks into Reynard's breeding experiment list and puts himself in as Reynard's chosen potential mate.
Reynard obviously recognises Misha when he arrives and then lives with him for 2 weeks, so they actually end up mated, but that's where their true problems really begin.

Now, I was expecting that same fun energy they've started out with, but that quickly passed. Misha was a very dominant omega top and he was a really good character, yet the almost BDSM energy going on between them didn't quite work. I was convinced Reynard was a submissive bottom, yes, but they needed a lot more to show us than an occasional "sir" and silk panties.

The whole relationship forming didn't really convince me, I couldn't feel the connection and it got a bit more interesting with Misha being hunted down and threatened, but it turned out the ones harming his family aren't his parents, but someone completely different, so I was confused as to why his parents, who didn't want him in the first place, were even in the story.

A fairly uninteresting read and the main characters didn't hold my attention, sad to say. I maybe expected more of the cyber world to be involved if the book is starting out with that, but if not, maybe more humour and excitement. The only exciting thing was - again - our resident pineapple ring, Harry.

It almost looks like the books in this spin-off series aren't written by both authors. Could be just me, but there's something missing in these stories.

I know this is marked as a spin-off, but it is quite connected to the original series, it really didn't feel any different. It all connects back to Harry's testing (which means cameos from Harry, Everard and Steve, yay for us!)

There were a couple of twists I wasn't expecting in Misha and Reynard's story. I would have enjoyed a bit more in-person build-up to things, but then again, I did like Misha's take-charge attitude. Although I enjoyed the first book just a bit more, there were plenty of wonderful moments here and it even brought a few tears to my eyes.

“All his will was thrown into making Reynard Drake his digital bitch.”

How have I not reviewed this yet?! Shame on me!

Every book in the Forbidden Desires series has been wonderful. This one was no exception. The cover kind of throws me off a bit, I'm not going to lie, because that's not how I imagine Reynard. I almost skipped this one entirely because of it, but I love Piper Scott's writing and the world she has built for these characters, so I knew it was one I had to read, regardless of my thoughts on the cover.

This book follows Reynard Drake and Misha, who also goes by Magpie. Misha started out by hacking into Reynard's servers and screwing with him for years. But then he realized there was an experiment and Reynard was to get an omega to pair with. Easy for Misha, he switched the names on the document and paired himself with the Drake brother. He showed up in his life and instantly began to take over, acting more alpha than his alpha dragon.

But that's exactly what Reynard wanted and needed.

The story had some interesting turns and now I have a crap ton of questions. Like who were those guys? What did they want? What do Reynard's brothers know that he doesn't?

Of course, Harry and Everard made an appearance and god, I just love them to bits. Everard is probably my favorite Drake dragon now, and I couldn't say that a few books ago. But the more he shows up, the more I love him.

I hate waiting for sequels of any kind but I know that one is coming. So I'll sit on my hands and go through my TBR and wait patiently. Maybe. Patience has never been my strong suit.

Reynard is the reclusive Drake brother. We got a hint of him in Mate, with quite an unusual phone call (and I LOVE that we got the phone call from his side in this story! Beagle, indeed!) He is also the next Drake brother due for a mate in Harry's continued experiment to match up pairs of dragons and omegas. Misha, AKA Magpie, is a disgrace - or a dragon omega who can't shift. He's also a crazy good hacker, and that is how he and Reynard first began interacting.

So...this is the first book in the overall series that I have actually struggled getting into. I would rate the first 1/3 of this book maybe 3-ish stars, but then finally around the 35% mark or so, it REALLY picked up for me and I enjoyed the last 2/3rds. I think what threw me was that it was so...it's jumped right into things when the two first meet in person. Even though they had spent years tiptoeing around each other online, with Misha hacking into Reynard's banks and systems, and the two had learned so much about each other through that interaction, it seemed very abrupt. And although we had a brief history of Misha growing up, I don't think it felt like enough for me to bypass all the buildup to a crazyhot relationship.

However, once they start truly falling for each other, I love the direction their relationship took. I loved how they each bettered the other, and how the "norms" were switched for them - an omega who was the alpha, and the alpha who wanted to submit.

As always - Harry and Everard completely steal the scenes they are in. I ADORE Harry - he is seriously one of my most favorite characters I have EVER read, and he and Ev together are just complete GOALS. I also really enjoyed how much the other family members interacted together in this one. And I can't wait for the next stories - I hope we'll get one with Bertram and then the promised story of Perry and Sebastian. And I'd totally take another story with Harry and Ev - they need to try and have a baby brother for Darwin!

These two authors together and just perfection and I highly, HIGHLY recommend this series! Although this one didn't blow me away like Bond or Magpie, it's still a fantastic story and I can't wait for more!

I received an arc in exchange for an honest review.

A Joyfully Jay review.

Magpie is a spin-off novel set in the world of Piper Scott and Virginia Kelly’s Forbidden Desires series. While you don’t need to have read the first novella spin-off, Swallow, it is definitely helpful here to be familiar with the main series, as there are a variety of characters that show up here, as well as world building and other plot elements that are important to really understand what is happening in this story.

Reynard has been a background character throughout the series so it was fun to get his journey here. The timelines of the books often overlap, so we have had some hints of Reynard’s story that were definitely intriguing. This book takes things in an interesting direction in that Reynard is not the arrogant, dominant, alpha type that his brothers and father are. Instead, Reynard has much more submissive tendencies and he has never even considered he might find a compatible omega.

Read Jay’s review in its entirety here.

The fact that although the covers for both main and spin-off series were consistently of the Drakes, the titles of the spin-off series were all titled after their omega mates. *chef's kiss*🥰

Misha: “Get on your back, drakon.”
Reynard: “Again?”

A recluse cybersecurity dragon and a thieving blackmailing magpie. Well, that's it...

Kidding. I remember now why I said Magpie and Finch rivals Bond on my top books in this series. Misha was such a spitfire and partnered with meek Reynard, it was a match made in heaven. Ev and Harry still has my heart especially since these doctors and their presence was prevalent on the entire series. However, this installment was very different from the rest since it has D/s dynamics in and out of bed and yes, good guess, Misha was the dominant of the two. 🤭

Pedigree omegas weren’t supposed to be forceful and demanding of their dragons, but it seemed no one had given Misha the memo. That, paired with what Misha dangled over his head as blackmail… It was intoxicating.

True to Harry's theory of Disgraces being dragons, Misha was so possessive of his mate and possessions like he's the dragon alpha and Reynard was his omega. I love how Misha took the time to learn all of Reynard's inclinations until there's an opportunity for them to meet. An opportunity that he took advantage of not so legally, of course. And as soon as he arrived, he quickly made all the positive changes in Reynard's life that the dragon had long neglected.

The omega that had been delivered to his doorstep was Magpie. His nemesis had come home to roost.

The beginning of this book was very entertaining. It relayed Reynard and Misha's digital meet-cute. I love their digital cough flirting cough hacking. It was also teemed with sex and hot scenes... until you realized why Misha was so desperate to try again and again. The rest of the book were challenges after challenges from the validity of their mating and Misha's ability to bear a clutch to the complications of bearing eggs and dangerous people after the omega. It was heartbreaking and heartwarming in some parts and I loved how it was a different experience from the last 4 books. 😭❤️

“I want you to look and I want you to remember. Every inch of skin. Every angle. Every curve. This is the body that owns you. Its shoulders may be narrow, but they will bear your burdens as their own. Its chest may not be broad, but it’s strong enough to endure whatever life may bring. Its feet may be dainty, but they will crush you should you disobey.”

Despite Misha's bossy and stubborn attitude, he clearly adored Reynard. It was unrequited love on his part since he's been attracted to the dragon for years. He considered the dragon the greatest treasure he's ever stolen that he will never be deserving of. ❤️

He didn’t deserve Reynard. Not really. Misha had lied and cheated and manipulated in order to be in his current position and he didn’t regret any of it. Not for one second. Reynard was his dragon, sought, chosen, and captured—Misha’s spoils in an electronic war, and the foundation of his heart. Reynard had given Misha, the thief that stole and connived into his life, absolutely everything: a home, a family, and more love than Misha knew existed in the entire world.

Overall, a great turn of events. This book also showed more of Bertram and the mystery of his constant absences which was a good progression on the underlying mysteries within the Amethyst clan. Now, I look forward to rereading Finch and our himbo Hugh. Weeeeee! 😂

Reynard and Misha

Both men work on the internet, they met each other more than once, virtual, as rivals and both feel the attraction.
Misha, aka Magpie, clever as he is, manipulates his future so he can be with Reynard.

Misha wasn’t a quiet breeze but more a tornado, entering Reynard’s life, unexpected.

Misha wants to be kept by Dragon Reynard, to win this privilege he has to convince Reynard to keep him and not being send back to his cloister. Misha will be everything Reynard needs, and oh boy in need he is! He’s happy to have his Magpie with him.
Misha needs a mark, Reynard’s mark, without it they will be separated forever. It’s a bit more difficult than it sounds.

I’m not sure telling more about this story, what I said above is just a tiny amount of the whole picture. There is so much story in this book. Not one page was boring, not one.
Misha and Reynard go through a tough time, with help from family and magic they can survive all the events.
We meet the beautiful dragon family of Reynard. They were all lovable and helpful.
Everald and Harrison are hilarious, they were a fresh wind.

I loooved the dragons, the eggs, the strong bond, the smoke and small licks of fire, the deep-rooted love. Delicious!

There are some devastating moments and events. It was all thrillingly written.
The bond and magic were healing. The love between Misha and Reynard overwhelming, their sexual encounters hot af and all well described, emotionally and physically.

This was an tremendous story, when you love a good written Dragon, shifter and mpreg story READ this one.

Not my favorite from this series

I have loved the previous books so much, I’ve even bought the audiobook versions which are not cheap. I think they are so well written, but man, I was a little disappointed with this one.

First of all - BDSM is not my thing. I don’t mind an assertive omega, I mean, how great was Matthieu right ? But to me, Misha came off as materialistic, spoiled, a little too arrogant. As I said, the whole BDSM is not for me, so having that be the relationship between him and Reynard tampered down my like for this book. I felt like the conflict was not well thought out or executed in a way that would just flow into the story. It was almost like an afterthought.

Another thing that this book tried to achieve but failed, was the use of a different language. Again, let’s look back at Matthieu, Ian and Geoff. Matt spoke French through the book but we were given the translation right away. I seriously got tired of stopping the book, highlighting , C&P, then then googling a translation for all the Russian words used. That certainly messed with the flow of the book for me.

So yeah, as much as I have loved this series, I didn’t exactly love this one. Hell, I even like Swallow more than this book.

ETA: I was soooooo wrong, so wrong. So I will be changing my rating, because after listening to this book a few times, I fell in love with Misha. I loved their dynamic. It's a great book !

Audiobook Review

When I first read this with my eyes, it was not a favorite like the others. I just didn't connect to Reynard and Misha. I am not sure why, but that's what happened.

Then I listened to Michael Ferraiuolo's narration and he made me really get these two and now I can say I really enjoyed this.

Here we have Reynard and Misha who were not paired up for the testing that Everard and Harry are doing but since Misha is a hacker who has known Reynard virtually since he was a teen, Misha put his name in for the pairing. Come to find out, they really are mates.

This was the start of the intrigue of Bernard and his Omega, but I wish that would have been left out.

I have to point out that Michael had me crying at the rescue scene in the water tower. I know making audiobooks is expensive, but hiring this narrator was so worth it.

This took me a while to finish which is never a good sign. That being said it was loads better than Swallow, which was basically an infomercial.

Misha and Reynard did not do it for me. I found their character development lacking. When Misha refers to Reynard as his 'stupid' dragon, woa! Assjack alert. Reynard faired a little better though if he would have owned the fact that he is a dragon and a submissive, it would have been more meaningful. All the wishy-washy was tedious.

Everard and Harry steal the show, time and again. How could they not?

We are discussing dragons and omegas which are over-the-top to begin with. It's why the eggs and whelps and knots and Steve are so worth it. 🐉🐉🐉

Another wonderful addition to the amazing world Piper Scott and Virginia Kelly have created. This book has everything I’ve come to expect from this series, there’s plenty of humor, tons of love, and of course, absolutely magnificent dragons. On top of all that, this one had a lot of edge of your seat excitement and tension, and what felt like a lot more heart stopping moments. This is one of my favorite series, and this installment was no exception.

I was itching for an mpreg story and was reminded I haven’t read this one in the series. I’d say it scratched my itch somewhat but the plot is a tad confusing. I do suppose some of the other books in the series happen concurrently but I don’t remember enough to piece them all together 🙈

I almost DNFed this a couple of times. Misha is super obnoxious, which it might seem a trait from the Diamond dragons but sometimes it was too much. Somehow their falling in love happened in the prologue which was really a bummer. I still cannot decide if the BIG THING that put everyone in danger is the opening for Bertram story or just plain laziness on the author's part. Like this happens because *plot* and we just have to accept it at face value. Not too hyped to be honest.

I absolutely love this series! I am always surprised at how much I enjoy these books. Their stories are extremely interesting, goofy and has great world building imo. Although it has sometimes taken me a bit to warm up to some of the characters, in the end, I have ended up loving all of them.

I'm sure I'd enjoy this story, and others in the series, even if I read them, but listening to Michael Ferraiuolo's voice makes them that much better. In this story, Diamond disgrace, Misha, who happens to be the notorious Magpie, a cybersecurity hacker, is given to Reynard Drake, the Amethyst family cypbersecurity expert, in a mating experiment conducted by Everard Drake and his mate, Harrison Lessardi (Bond). What he doesn't know is that Misha was able to break the code for matching mates and inserted himself with the brilliant techie instead of the "disgrace" who was originally assigned to him.

The two make a formidable team, once the Magpie issue and his deception is resolved, and despite having to prove they are true mates, Misha is impregnated with 11 eggs. The egg scenes and nesting in this story is just as sweet and heartwarming as in the other books. I have no idea why this attracts me and gives me the warm and fuzzy feelings that soothe my inner brat but these books do it. And it doesn't hurt that the narrator is spot-on with the Russian accent for Misha or the deep voice he gives Reynard. And Harrison is still the best voice in the series--so lighthearted and excited about every little scientific discovery and so clueless that others don't care as much about his experiments and theories as he does. I love that man!

So, all in all, this is a great series and spin-off series and I hope it continues. Seems to me that Sebastian is due for one of his own. Just sayin'.

It was enjoyable but I found I didn't like Misha very much, or the way he acted with Reynard. I loved Reynard and his sweetness in general. There were some things left unexplained regarding Bertram, the eggnapping and the attack. My favorites were Harry and Everard, they stole the show and made me laugh.
