Not As Promised

The book's title and subtitle promise the reader a lot, and unfortunately, this book fails to deliver on those promises. The author really doesn't give that many tips or techniques about speed reading; he refers to techniques but doesn’t really give you much information. For one thing, it is only 48 pages long in the PDF version that I received for review. Therefore, the author can't go into any sort of depth. I found the book overly repetitious, especially for such a short book. As an example, the author defines what speed reading is in several chapters. I say, do it once the right way at the very beginning! The writing language itself felt awkward and overwritten, which is kind of ironic given that he speaks of reading books without fluff to help your speed reading. He also contradicts himself in places. At the very beginning, he states that pleasure reading could be a reason why you want to learn how to speed read and specifically mentions reading romance. But then two times later in the book he doesn't recommend using speed reading techniques for fiction. The chapter that looks like it might have exercises has none whatsoever. He also implied that he would give the solution to subvocalization, the bane of many would-be speed readers, but he only gave a one- or two-sentence off-the-cuff answer that could not be implemented as is without further instruction. So, all in all, I found this to be a disappointing read.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Complete waste of time.

There is no actual speed reading technique given in this book and the author seems to get great joy out of repeating the same material throughout each chapter. In the end, you are directed somewhere else for the actual material that you downloaded the book for, for a small free of course.

A simple Self Help book that enables the reader to efficiently use their time.

I enjoyed reading Speed Reading the Right Way because I have noticed that people appear to read at very different speeds. Am I doing something wrong and taking longer to read a book? Dane looks at reading in the modern world where text rushes at you 24 hours a day. He explains the 2 essential types of reading, information gathering and novels/poetry.

By taking his advice, you can greatly increase the speed of your information gathering. Look at the format of the document, scan the lines to find the bit you are most interested in, read and comprehend that minor part, ignore the rest and move onto your next document. This approach can save you a lot of time as you only read the best bits. You don’t actually read faster but finish with the document quicker, therefore can process more documents in the same time frame. I use the term “document” to cover all text that is not a novel/poetry. Think how quickly you pick up important information as you drive past road signs. You don’t think let’s read fast, you instinctively “catch the text” that you want.

Reading novels/poetry is very different and you should take your time and dwell on every word, fully comprehending the novel/poem. So your reading speed will be the same as before you read this book. Continue to enjoy the pleasure from reading novels/poetry as you already do - at your usual leisurely pace. However, there are 2 tweaks you could try which would increase your total reading speed throughout a novel/poem if you are a victim of 2 bad and inefficient habits. Regressing - where you go back and read the text again. You take in the text of a road sign as you drive past, you don’t need to turn around and drive back to read it again. Your subconscious mind has comprehended the text, so regressing and reading it again is simply a waste of time and slows down your overall reading speed. Subvocalization - where your inner voice speaks the words as you read them. Well, nobody can hear you talking to yourself, be quiet and you will read more words per minute with the same comprehension as your subconscious puts all the words into context.

I think Speed Reading the Right Way is a GOOD 4 star read that explains the reasons why some people appear to read faster than others. Consider how much time some people waste on emails and social media if they don’t cherry pick the high value sentences. These seconds add up into minutes and hours. By only reading the high value sentences the user appears to read faster and plough through more emails and social media posts per hour.

Good tips

I used to read fast when I was younger, now I have PTSD and my reading is ruff. I will be applying some of these tips to see if I can read more as well as better.

Basic description

This book isn't one you would want to start with. It describes why you would want to speed reading but isn't much help in teaching you how to.
