Pursuit of Happiness: From Heels to Wheels

Rate this book
The intimate memoir of a young woman handed a future she refused to accept, and how she discovered the secret to rewriting her own destiny. Newly divorced and happily single, Mayuri Saxena had just relaunched her life in the Big Apple. She faced many of the challenges common to women in their early the shock of suddenly being independent again, the frustration of a stalled career, and of course, an unhealthy addiction to cute dogs and expensive bookshops. But a devastating, unforeseen diagnosis would wrench the rug from under Mayuri’s feet, leaving her old anxieties to scatter like snowflakes on the wind. Tiny, insignificant, and temporary. Her new reality, however, was none of those things. Permanently confined to a wheelchair at the ripe old age of thirty-two, activities as simple as using a public bathroom became feats of courage and endurance that left her gasping for breath—and her dignity. But amidst the wreckage of her old identity, hidden truths and promises waited to be discovered, if Mayuri could only bring herself to find them. With humor, candor, and a healthy dose of irony, Mayuri invites us to follow her as she navigates her new existence—and runs over a few toes in the process. With grit and grace, she discovers five pillars of truth that arise throughout her adventures, including dramatic rescues by uniformed hunks, and a survival guide to New York’s notoriously inaccessible subway system. “The Pursuit of From Heels to Wheels” is a bittersweet ride through losing everything, to finding more than you ever bargained for.

Heartwarming. Inspiring. Beautiful.

Mayuri put an incredible amount of love in this book. You can tell because not only did she share her story, but she shared it in a way that took the reader on a journey of self reflection through her own experiences and lessons learned. Highly recommend.

I love the journey!

As a disabled power wheelchair user myself, I tend to look for books about other disabled people. In this book I found a kindred spirit with many of the same thoughts and feelings as I have. I laughed out loud at one subway event with the firefighters she recalls in the book. This was a truly quick and fascinating read. I think everyone should read it!
