A young boy discovered in the woods. A village about to face its past.
Rumours of hauntings and strange occurrences enrapture the people of Rilston - old superstitions which spiral when a young boy is discovered asleep in the woodland, waking without words or memory. Rumour soon turns to fever when it's confirmed that the boy isn't from the village, leading to tales of strange sightings resurfacing. It is only when another figure is discovered in the woodland, covered in blood, that the real nightmare begins...
Mapping shadows reminds you that responding to what you don't understand with violence, discrimination and fear brings about horrible consequences. It was an ok read, just a little over 100 pages, though I preferred 'The Refuge' which is the short thrills 2. Hope I'll get to read 'Killing symphony' soon.
The third installment in E.G. Ellory "Short Thrills" series is called Mapping Shadows. I had to just sit and take in the nature of this story after I read it, some books are just like that. It take place in a small village of a few hundred maybe 1,000 people. I spent 17 years in a small town like that in Colorado but thank God it never was anything like Riltson. Yes gossip travels and much of it lies, it is like living in a fish bowl but again a town like Riltson would make me run for the hills. Old superstitions, we had that, ghost, we had that, but real fear and anger can devastate and town, city or even nation. This story reminded me of the old west when people were more prone to superstition. But Mr. Ellory's story made me think of how easy fake news, social media, mean gossip or mob mentality can turn a small town, neighborhood or community in on itself like a cancer eating away at sanity or reason. Another great thought provoking story definitely worth the read.
This is a well written short story with an interesting story line and strong well developed characters. The author brings a true page turner, moves it quickly and smoothly and I enjoyed reading.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.
A title like Mapping Shadows warns of a cryptic story to follow. It’s another short thrills mystery by E. G. Ellory, not as sinister as the first 2, but a completely puzzling must read for suspense thriller fans! I can’t wait to see what enigma he creates next!
Small town, superstitious fake news. Gossiping can turn people on each other and lose all manner of reason. People forget what is true and lose themselves in the story going @present.
