HEY, U UP? (For a Serious Relationship): How to Turn Your Booty Call into Your Emergency Contact

Rate this book
Who better to write a very humorous manual about evolving modern relationships than two CollegeHumor veterans and viral-video stars who happen to be a real-life husband-and-wife team? With candor, bite, and charm, HEY, U UP? takes readers on an eight-chapter journey through the trials of hooking up to the foibles of marriage, and combines the authors’ prescriptive advice with the unfolding story of their own relationship. HEY, U UP? tackles all the milestones of relationships today—both glorious and embarrassing— with sections ranging from “How to Ask Someone Out After You’ve Slept with Them” all the way to “Establish Your Family as the Christmas Family by Turning Your Significant Other Against Their Own Parents.” In addition to the laugh-out-loud essays, lists, questionnaires, and even flowcharts further enliven the pages.

Emily and Murph are comedians that I remember seeing on CollegeHumor videos years ago, and I recently found them again listening to both their D&D podcast, Not Another D&D Podcast (NADDPOD) and watching them on CollegeHumor’s D&D show, Dimension 20. They are DELIGHTFUL on both and I highly recommend people checking them out. I wanted to see what else they were up to and binged both seasons of their comedy show, Hot Date (that has a very similar vibe to this book) and I had such a good time I wanted to read their book too. I thought that this was going to be a bit more of a funny stories/memoir/satire thing than it ended up being, but it was a charming and funny quick read and I had a good time. They’re both really talented people and I’ve yet to find anything they’ve done that I haven’t enjoyed.

Ended up here because I watch Dimension 20.
I watch Dimension 20 thanks to my boyfriend.
My boyfriend is now my fiancé because he's a big ass nerd.
He's a big ass nerd because he gave me full access to his premium Audible membership.
He gave me full access to his premium Audible membership so I can listen to his ~400 books.
I can listen to his ~400 books and one of them was HEY, U UP?

Full circle.
I won.
I have the best serious relationship and a most reliable emergency contact ✨

This is the first book labeled "humor" that I really enjoyed from start to finish! Comedic books, for me, always become tedious after 30 pages or so. But I loved this book! I love Emily and Murph, and their book had me laughing throughout. It also had heart, which clinched this book for me as a true delight.

I am relistening to NADDPOD (Not Another D&D Podcast), and their first season they advertise for this book a lot. I kept telling myself for years to buy and read it (and forgetting). I finally bought it and read it and it is so funny. They give really funny advice, and it is a lot of fun peeking into their relationship. They are elder millennials, so their references are not lost on me and are very much appreciated. If Axford and Murphy released a memoir of their love, life, and marriage I'd buy it immediately.

While this book is probably not helpful for actually obtaining a relationship. It'l is very helpful for finding humour in realising how obnoxious you used to be when you were single and dating! Shout out to the Two Crew!

I have been a fan of Emily and Murph for years - their college humor videos, Adam Ruins Everything, and their podcast episodes all make me laugh. So it was no surprise that I LOVED this book. Chapters cover things like what is a hook up versus a HOOK DOWN, how to pretend to be someone other than your garbage self, and overanalyzing how your new hook up introduces you to their friends. Also, there are recipes. There was a chapter on wedding planning and I felt SEEN. This book is perfect for someone who wants to read something hilarious right now, which was definitely me when I picked it up.

I thought this was very funny, very much Emily Axford and Brian Murphy. However, I do wish they spent a little more time with actual advice rather then scenarios. I understand it’s a comedy book, but I did expect a little more actual advice.

Hilarious. I loved the audiobook, Emily and Murph work so well off of each other and their humor comes through so well. Really made me want to watch Hot Date again.

First of all, shout out to the Two Crew.

This is a fun read, and it satirically (yet fairly accurately) describes the journey from hooking up to getting married. Readers also get a small glimpse into Emily and Murph's relationship from the chapter epigraphs and anecdotes. It's funny, sweet, and charming, though slightly formulaic.

The chapter on Engagement is absolutely golden. It's parody at its perfection: very funny, completely accurate, and just the right amount of preachy.

My favourite line: "Feminism to Baby Boomers is like the Headless Horseman to Sleepy Hollow: everyone's got a story about how it destroyed a friend of a friend, but none of them have ever actually seen it." This and many others are totally deserving of a Golden Mic.

Go read this book.

A bit of fun! The second half seemed funnier, so stick with it if you're 10min in and not laughing much yet. Love the cynicism of traditional marriage/relationship norms.

What I like most about this audiobook, and Emily & Murph's show "Hot Date", is that the writers genuinely seem to enjoy each other's company. Maybe it's wishful thinking, but to me they're one of those fun couples that can riff off each other with enough creativity to never get bored. I wonder what they'll do next!

To Emily & Murph, sorry I couldn't rate this 5 stars like you asked in the audiobook, ahahaha. But I love you both anyway! ❤️

A silly fun book. I adore Emily and Murphy but I think their humor works a bit better in improv and comedy writing. Still enjoyed the read though.

This book provides a lot of laugh out loud moments (to the point I just started reading entire chapters out loud to my husband. I'm sure the other people at the resort we were honeymooning at didn't mind too much.). I am biased because of being a huge fan of Emily (and Murph), but I do believe it's genuinely entertaining. And it has great visuals as well, in the form of maps/charts/lists/body parts/etc. Plus a chapter on diamonds that will make you feel like a horrible, awful person if you have them!

I love everything that Murph and Emily do so it was a given that I would like this book. However, I was still pleasantly surprised by how good it actually was.

First and foremost, this book is satire so don’t look to it to map out how to pursue a relationship. That said, amidst the well executed humor there is also good tidbits of information about the complicated idea that is human partnership. That blend of humor and wholesomeness really makes for a great read.

I’ll definitely be giving this a re-read again soon.

Recently, I've gone on a huge Dimension 20 kick, which lead to a CollegeHumor obsession. It didn't take long after that for me to discover this book, as Emily and Murph have consistently been my favorite in nearly everything they do. I knew I had to read this book, and I sure as hell wasn't disappointed! And neither will you be should you give it a chance!

Funny, heartfelt, and informative, HEY, U UP? is the perfect book for us single people looking to make that cute stranger our BETROTHED. (A reference to one of the funniest bits in the book. Read it to understand the reference!)

For the first time in a long while, finally a book that actually made me laugh out loud. I knew I can count on Axford and Murph's sense of humor. Love them from dimension20 and naddpod. The premise was simple but the way they put it in the words made it hilarious. I am in no way can relate to any of the couple situations since I'm proudly single, but the humor just got me real good. I enjoyed reading this although non-fiction isn't really up to my alley. Great work also for the editors and all the team that made this book. As expected from the people of dropout (used to be collegehumor).

I love everything Murph and Emily do so this book was a treat and a dream.

The book is hilarious, wild, sweet, and ridiculous. I could hear their voices in it and I loved it, and the art/flowcharts/quizzes were fantastic. I flew through this book, and was grumpy when forced to put it down to do human adult things like "eat" and "say hi to our guests they've been waiting to see you".

A book I loved by two comedians + creators that I admire above most! This book is honest in a way that I find so refreshing, and has more laughs than anything I’ve read lately. I would honestly read a stream of consciousness retelling of the Bible if Murph and Emily attached their names to it, so it’s even better that they happened to write such a fantastic book.

Em and Murph bringing that good old fashioned early 2010s collegehumor spirit to a book that was genuinely touching at times. Plus they snuck in two Vonnegut references which felt specifically for me. Super fun, super light read. I’d love a full Naddpod mini campaign through the mystical relationship world they created.

Although they closed by reminding me that I kind of owed them a five-star rating, I owe everyone else a rating of four stars for this book that is excellent if you ignore that it's unrelentingly hetero. Honestly, relationship books have been including other kinds of relationships for a little while now. Then again, this isn't honest advice, it's satire.

Didn't really know what I was getting into when I picked up this book but the sarcastic humour was everything in this novel. I am happily married so a lot of the "advice" doesn't really apply to me but I found myself chuckling a few times.
Good Read!

This book is absolutely hilarious. I was chuckling out loud constantly. While I certainly have a bias since I already adore Murph and Emily, I really think anyone in any phase of a relationship or singleness would enjoy this.

Also the epilogue made me cry, so yeah.

Without a doubt the funniest book I’ve ever read. There are very few books that will make me actually laugh out loud (yes yes I’m aware it’s comedy) and this takes the cake. It’s raunchy and funny and I can’t recommend enough.

Really a 3.5, since it was pretty over the top, but I love Emily and Murph on Dimension 20, so bumped it up to a 4. Essentially, my SO and I did exactly this path (not as co-workers thank goodness), but over a matter of years, rather than the months it took the results-oriented authors. ;)

I finished this book eons ago and never got around to writing a review, but this is a wonderfully witty installment from one of my favorite couples in pop culture and comedy. I’m also happily married now, so at least their advice is sound!

This was one of the funniest books I've read. I found myself laughing out loud (which was very weird when I was reading it on the bus). Love the two writers from the D&D shows, and the jokes in this are just wonderful. I recommend it to anyone, single or in a relationship, just to have a good time!
